Based on SAR signatures for bars, bar transformation is investigated from 2000 to 2005, and monitoring of suspended-silt transportations from terrestrial runoff is tried to understand the morphology during the events of severe rain storm. SAR data did not reveal clearly the bar locations because of most of data acquisitions during high tides form 6.8 m to 9.0 m. Even though the problem, it could be said that in the estuary vegetated area and natural levees are developed well, but bars are shifted after an event like a flood. It is also showed that suspended solids such as silt transported through the estuary could contributed highly to a sedimentation environment around Incheon. A navigational route could be designed with a minimum width of about 200m.
We estimated aboveground primary productivity of Salix nipponica based on biomass using allometry and basal area at Janghang wetland in Han River estuary. In addition, we estimated secondary production of sesarmine crab (Sesarma dehaani) living under the Salix community to interpret relationships between Salix nipponica and Sesarma dehaani. Salix nipponica showed primary productivity of 4,777 g DW $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, which appear to be the highest primary productivity in South Korea. The estimated amount of autochthonous organic matter from S. nipponica and allochthonous organic matter from the Han River into sediment was 359 g C $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$ and 347 g C $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, respectively. The secondary productivity of Sesarma dehaani was 100.2 g FW $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, which was 2.1% of the primary productivity of S. nipponica. The biomass of Sesarma dehanni was average 140 g FW $m^{-2}$, which consumed their prey of approximately 2,140 g FW $yr^{-1}$, which is equivalent to approximately 208 g C $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$.
The aims of this study were wintering individuals, usage of foraging sites, potential food availability, daily activity and disturbance factors of White-naped Cranes Grus vipio on the wintering site, Han-river estuary, Goyang and Gimpo city, Korea. We want to provide basic data to conserve the cranes. Maxium population was identified 162 individuals at the middle of February in the river side and mud flat of this study area. Spring migration for breeding was started at the first week of March and finished for two weeks later. White-naped Cranes were used four feeding sites in winter; agricultural area in Hongdopyong, Yihwa-dong, Pyong-dong and Songpo-dong. Expected carrying capacity (ECC) was 334 days (121~909 days). White-naped Cranes departed from roosting site to feeding site at every morning for foraging. If they were disturbed by some factors at feeding sites, they moved to mud flat in the Han river to forage and take a rest. Daily activity was consisted of six category; feeding, alert, locomotion, preening, comfort, social and other behaviors. Feeding was the highest portion among behaviors in the wintering area. Feeding, alert, locomotion and preening in daily activities significantly differed among feeding sites. We watched total 348 times of disturbances in the wintering sites. Artificial disturbances were vehicles, humans, bicycles and motorcycles. Natural disturbances were noises, animals and others. Disturbances in all wintering sites were highest in Yihwa-dong (134 times) and followed by Hongdopyong (109 times), Songpo-dong (64 times) and then Pyong-dong (44 times). And artificial disturbances (228 times) were more than natural disturbances (120 times). Especially, vehicle was one of the most checked factor in the wintering area.
Fine-grained sediments of the Han River and adjacent Kyonggi Bay have been studied using the powder x-ray diffractometer in order to study the distributional characteristics of clay minerals in the bottom and suspended sediments. The result of the XRD analyse shows that the major clay minerals in the lower Han River are composed of illite (57.1%), kaolinite (22.9%), and chlorite (19.6%) and that those of the Han River Estuary are composed of illite (67.2%), chlorite (16.5%), kaolinite 915.5%), and smectite (1.3%). The variation of mineral content shows distinct distributional characteristics depending on sedimentary environments. The illite content increases gradually approaching the Kyonggi Bay and kaolinite content decreases toward the sea within the range between 11% and 23%. The trend of chlorite is similar to that of kaolinite, the amount of which ranges between 14% and 19%. Smectite content is lower than 3%. Analysis of illite using peak-intensity ratio (001/002) indicates that two types of illites occur in the study area. Dioctahedral-type illite occurs as an indicator of the marine sediments. The illites distributed between the Kyonggi Bay and the Han River are mixtures of dioctahedral- and trioctahedral-types. This study indicates that the distribution of illite, kaolimite, and chlorite has been influenced mainly by the supply from the Han River and redistributed by estuarine circulation, such as tidal circulation and seasonal variation of river discharge. However, smectite is apparently supplied from other sources such as Yellow Sea or China. This study suggests that estuarine mixing system and seasonal variations of river discharge are the major factors controlling the distribution pattern of clay minerals in the study area.

We examined the feeding habits of larval Konosirus punctatus using 165 specimens collected from May to August 2011 in the Nakdong River estuary, Korea. We found that larval K. punctatus [3.9-8.4 mm notochord length (NL)] are carnivorous, consuming mainly rotifers. Their diet also included small numbers of rhizopods, tintinnids, euglenoids, copepods, larval bivalves, dinoflagellates, diatoms, and unidentified materials. To evaluate ontogenetic changes in dietary composition, we split the larvae into three size groups: < 5 mm, 5-6 mm, and > 6 mm NL. The smallest size group frequently preyed on rhizopods. As NL increased, the number of rotifers increased relative to those of rhizopods. Larvae also showed bimodal feeding for feeding incidence, with peaks in the midafternoon and at midnight, while the mean number of prey per individual peaked at 18:00-19:00 h.

This study conducted numerical simulations to analyze the wave characteristics(distribution) depending on the directional changes of waves in the Nakdong river estuary by using SWAN(Simulating WAves Nearshore) model. The results from the tests are summarized as below. The wave height rates are generally highly distributed with the incident waves from the S, SSE, SSW, SE, SW in sequence. When the waves from the S, SSW, SSE directions are predominant, the bigger waves were observed in front of sandbars. According to the results of the wave steepness against the wave direction, at the east coast of Gadeok island(northwest of Nakdong estuary), where has mild seabed slopes, the wave height rates distribute in the range of 0.4~0.6; the wave height rates over the west coastal region of Dadeapo(southeast of Nakdong estuary) are 0.5~0.6. The wave height rate tends to be rapidly decreased over the east region of Nakdong river estuary rather than its west region.

In order to understand the importance of tidal action and $NH_4{^+}$ -nitrification in the removal of dissolved oxygen (DO) and $NH_4{^+}$, concentrations of DO, $NH_4{^+}$, $NO_2{^-}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ were measured with time for water samples collected at different tidal state in the eutrophic macrotidal Han River estuary. Field measurements indicated that most environmental parameters, except for the water temperature and DO concentration, were tightly controlled by the eutrophic freshwater runoff and large-scale tidal action. Dark incubation of the water sample at $25^{\circ}C$ showed that the removal rates of DO and $NH_4{^+}$ in high tide sample were 2.76 ${\mu}M\;O_2\;d^{-1}$ and 1.76 ${\mu}M\;N\;d^{-1}$ respectively, and increased to 5.66 ${\mu}M\;O_2\;d^{-1}$ and 3.36 ${\mu}M\;N\;d^{-1}$ respectively, in low tide sample. These changes indicated that microbial degradation and uptake of organic matter and inorganic nutrients were more active during low tide. $NH_4{^+}$-nitrification responsible for total DO removal in low tide (23.81%) and $NH_4{^+}$ turnover rates due to $NH_4{^+}$-nitrification in low tide (0.18 $d^{-1}$) were approximately 3.7 times and 3 times, respectively, higher than those in high tide. These results indicated that $NH_4{^+}$ -nitrifying bacteria introduced into the Han River estuary during low tide played a significant role in the removal of DO and $NH_4{^+}$. The decreasing removal rates in DO and $NH_4{^+}$ with the increasing tidal level seemed to be associated with the salinity impact on the halophobic freshwater $NH_4{^+}$-nitrifying bacteria. The results implied that anthropogenic $NH_4{^+}$ sources should be treated prior to the freshwater runoff into the estuary for the effective control of $NH_4{^+}$ in the Han River estuary. These results also suggest that parallel ecological studies on the chemoautotrophic nitrifying bacteria are essential for the elucidation of nitrogen cycles in the eutrophic Han River estuary.
Behavior of nutrients along the salinity gradients in the Seomjin River estuary was investigated in March July, September and November, 1999. Sampling sites were set based on the surface salinity during each cruise rather than geographic locations. The results suggest that source of nitrate and silicate was the Seomjin River discharge, while that of nitrite and phosphate was waste disposal from the Gwangynng Bay near the mouth of Seomjin River estuary. Ammonia was supplied inside the estuary at the region about $6\~8$ km far from Nancho Island. Strong removal behavior of some nutrient such as ammonia, phosphate and silicate was observed at $5\~15$ psu salinity area in November, where high concentrations of $chlorophyll\;a\;(>8{\mu}g/L$) occurred. High N : P ratios and entirely removal of phosphate at chlorophyll a peak region suggest that phosphate is the limiting factor for phytoplankton growth. Relatively high ratios of Rb to Ra (Rb: Fluorescence before acidification, Ra: Fluorescence after acidification) at $5\~15$ psu salinity region in November indicate that phytoplankton were in good physiological condition.

This study analyzed the characteristics of sea water transport between Busan New-port and the Nakdong River estuary. A current meter was placed on a pier bridge and the current velocity was analyzed to determine the flow direction. Water temperature, salinity, turbidity, and tide were also measured to determine the characteristics of sea water and to describe the tidal current between the two regions. The results indicated that the dominant outflow direction of the ebb tidal current was from the Nakdong River estuary to Busan New-port. Conversely, during a flood tide, the dominant direction was from Busan New-port to the Nakdong River estuary. The maximum current speed during the first and second field measurements was about 13.18 and 30.80 cm/ sec, respectively. During the first field measurement, the total volume of sea water transport was $184.71\;m^3/sec$ and the residual volume transport was $+59.74\;m^3/sec$. By contrast, during the second field measurement, the respective values were $331.15\;m^3/sec$ and $28.88\;m^3/sec$.
The Han River is the only waterway in Korea where estuary is not blocked by dykes so that tidal water is flowing in and out through the tidal reach. The extreme tidal range in the Yellow Sea causes an intense flood current, stretching over horizontal extents of tens of kilometers into the rivers. To elucidate the flow reversal by discharge conditions and transient tidal level in the Han river, numerical simulations were conducted under 7 boundary conditions for two days with 10 minute time step. As the flow conditions changed from low discharge and high tidal difference to high discharge and low tidal difference, the flow reversals became weaker and the velocity of forward flow direction became higher due to the increased flow momentums and decreased tidal differences. In the case of normal flow, the maximum reverse velocity was 0.4 m/s, which was equivalent to the maximum forward velocity. In addition, the pattern of the development and decay of forward and reverse flow was presented.
