This study has evaluated the raingauge network of Nam-Han River Basin by assuming that the rainfall field is homogeneous in space and its spatial correlation structure is exponential. The results of the study was compared with the standard of WMO. Summarizing the results are as follows: (1) The Nam-Han River Basin is not the mountain area, nor the plain area of the WMO standard. However, the correlation length of the downstream part is longer than that of the upstream part, enough to differentiate the rainfall fields in both areas. (2) It seems that the standard for the evaluation of the raingauge network of Nam-Han River Basin should be decided to represent upper 50% of correlations derived, when the maximum intervals between neighboring gauges are estimated to be 18.2km for the upstream area and 21.1km for the downstream area. Simply evaluating the raingauge density, the Nam-Han River Basin has enough raingauges exceeding the WMO standard for the mountain area in the temperate region. (3) Evaluation of the spatial distribution of raingauges in the Nam-Han River Basin shows that its spatial distribution Is not in a proper level, especially when applying the WMO standard for the mountain area in the temperate region. However, when applying the new standard proposed in this study, only five to six more raingauges are required to be added.

This study aimed to identify the characteristics of the plant growth forms within the Amsa-dong Ecological and Landscape Conservation Area, a floodplain along the Han River, based on 20 years of flora monitoring data. The analysis revealed that there were 106 taxa identified in 2003, 158 taxa in 2006, 107 taxa in 2013, and 202 taxa in 2020. Compared to 2003 and 2013, the number of taxa increased significantly by approximately 50 taxa in 2006 and around 100 taxa in 2020. It is presumed that this is due to the influx of seeds caused by the flooding of the Han River due to record-breaking heavy rains during the rainy seasons of 2006 and 2020, leading to a rapid increase in the number of taxa. This was also confirmed in aquatic plants(HH) as a result of comparison of life style analysis by year. The analysis revealed that there were 19 aquatic plant(HH) in 2003, 32 aquatic plant(HH) in 2006, 9 aquatic plant(HH) in 2013, and 30 aquatic plant(HH) in 2020. The number of aquatic plants(HH) increased slightly in 2006 and 2020 compared to 2003 and 2013, and the influx of rare aquatic plants in urban rivers was confirmed. Consistent with the results of the vascular flora analysis above, these plants are believed to have been introduced from the upper reaches of the Han River when the Han River flooded due to heavy rains during the record-breaking rainy season in 2006 and 2020.

To study run-off characteristics in the small watersheds in Korea, investigations had been carried out for a period of 4 years from 1972 to 1975 in the sample watersheds. The samples were selected in four major river basins such as the Han River, the Keum River, the Nakdong River and the Yongsan River. Water levels and rainfall data had been. collected from each sample area where the measuring instruments were installed. The findings of this investigation can be summarized as follows; 1. With an average runoff rate of 60% in the sample watersheds, the average runoff rate. in each sample proved to be as below; the Han River Basin : 41.4% the Keum River Basin : 61.7% the Nakdong River Basin : 69.4% the Yong San River Basin : 69.2% 2. The base flow rate in the sample watersheds proved to be 8.1 mm/month. 3. A comparison of the runoff obtained from actual measurements made and that calculated by the Kaijyama formula showed that the latter is 9.1% lower than the former.

Comprehensive development projects were carried out on the Han River from 1982 to 1986 for the purpose of creating a more serviceable places such as a riverside parks and autoroads and so on. However because of the river development, river ecosystem and function were destroyed. And many local autonomous entity follows comprehensive development projects as if it is a model case. To investigate the impact that the river development effects the river ecosystem, two sites which are Anyangcheon and Sooipcheon were surveyed in the right of around plants ecosystem and structure. Two sites are creek of the Hna River. Sooipcheon maintains the sound ecosystem. It has sufficient carrying capacity for the river recreation activity. The reason is that a hydrophyte absorbs nutrients from the stream and the river ecosystem meets the around terrestrial one neturally. Number of hydrophyte increase from upstream going forward to downstream. Number of hydrophyte increase from upstream going forward to downstream. Anyangchoen is seriously polluted stream out of many branch stream of the Han river. In the upstream various woody plants and hydrophyte appeared. But from the river developed area at midstream, naturalized plants dominated such as Bidens tripartita, panicum dichotomiflorum etc. To manage the creek ecologically, hydrophyts were introduced in partly for natural purification after rehavilitate the riverside, and steadily monitoring is demanded.
In river with bar, the characteristics of its physical conditions have a close relationship with bar morphology. In this paper, a monitoring approach of bar transformation in the Han River Estuary is presented using RADARSAT/SAR Images. The estuary is divided into North and South Korea and its area is blocked by CCL(Civil Control Line). Satellite remote sensing, therefore, is uniquely suited to monitoring bar transformation. Based on SAR signatures for bars, bar transformation is investigated from 2000 to 2005, and monitoring of suspended-silt transportations from terrestrial runoff is tried to understand the morphology during the events of severe rain storm. SAR data did not reveal clearly the bar locations because of most of data acquisitions during high tides from 6.8 m to 9.0 m. Even though the problem, it could be said that in the estuary vegetated area and natural levees are developed well, but bars and shifted after an event like a flood. It is also showed that suspended solids such as silt transported through the estuary could contribute highly to a sedimentation environment around Incheon.

In this study, changes in the fluvial landforms of the Yeoju section of the Han River, which was made up of the Han River Restoration Project, were examined through existing previous research data, government's environmental impact assessment data, satellite images, and field observations. For example, In the vicinity of Dori Island, the most upstream part of the study section, the location of the confluence of the Han River and Cheongmi Stream was changed, and it was found that a significant portion of the sand sedimentary layer disappeared. In the Bawuinupgubi area, the wetland, which is the first class in the ecological nature, was greatly modified, and the elevation of the ground rose as Gangcheon island and it was completely separated from the river by dredging The confluence of Geumdangcheon and the point bar of Yeonyang-ri in the south were also dredged, turned into an artificial waterfront park, and a chute channel remained in the form of a wetland was also developed as a recreational park. The deposional forms around Baekseok-ri islands also disappeared as dredging was carried out. Among the areas adjacent to the confluence of Bokcheon and Yangchon-ri Island, some sedimentay forms remains, but the abandonned channel between Yangchon-ri and the northern river bank has been changed into a riverside reservoir through dredging and embankment construction, and the waterway of the tributary river(Yazoo) has been greatly changed.

This study is the primary study for analyzing the classifying characteristics of river wetlands in Korea and China. It is the first step for constructing the wetlands inventories and establishing the wetland conservation strategies in North-Eastern Asia. The case study sites are Han-river which is the representative river of Korea and Tu-men river which is flowing on the borderline of 3 nations, China, North Korea and Russia. The results are as follows : 1. The types of wetlands of Han-river in Korea and Tumen-river in China were classified by the methods of Koo(2002) which is focused on the topography and hydrology and Zhu(2002) which is emphasized the vegetation and habitats. 2. There are three features which are hydrology, topography and soil cover, and vegetation to classify the wetlands into each types. 3. According to the two wetland types by Koo and Zhu, classification system, wetlands in the case study area(Han river and Duman river) were classified by types. 4. In Koo's classifying system(2002), lots of Riverine, Lacustrins and Flat wetlands are found because the topographical and hydrological features are emphasized. On the contrary in Zhu's system(2002), there are lots of Palustrine wetlands because of emphasizing the vegetation. 5. By the topographic and geological characteristics of each sites, there are more wetland types in the lower Tumen river.
The Han River is divided into North and South Korea by NLL(Northern Limit Line) and its area has been blocked by CCL(Civil Control Line) since the Korean War in 1950. Satellite remote sensing, therefore, is uniquely suited to monitoring bar transformation in the region. In river with bar, the characteristics of its physical conditions have a close relationship with bar morphology. In this paper, a monitoring approach of bar transformation in the Han River Estuary is presented using RADARSAT/SAR images from 2000 to 2005 and spatial patterns of bar morphology are presented. It could be said that in the estuary vegetated area and natural levees are developed well, but bars are shifted after an event like a flood. It is also showed that suspended solids such as silt transported through the estuary could contribute highly to a sedimentation environment around Incheon.
Recently two thousand year old several villages ruins discovered at Amsadong, Daeshimli and Hunbaukol near the Han River side in Korea. An investigation of the present flora of these three localities was done. There are 84 families including 419 species of vascular plants. The vegetations of flora in the localities of the Han River side are very similar. the forests are poorly developed and appear as the secondary vegetations. The reforest plants can be recognized as Pinus rigida, quercus acutissima, Q. serrata, Robinia pseudoacacia and Alnus hirta. Herbaceous plants of Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Phragmitis japonicus bind up the soiles of the Han River side. Populus nigra grows abundantly in the moist places of sand bars which are located on the river side south of Daeshimli and on the northern side of the Han River across from Hunbaukol. These three area are fully cultivated but still many primitive farm techniques are employed. Farm produce crops include rice, corn, barley wheat, other vegetables, and a few ornamental plants. In this study the author found flower color variations ranging from a dark blue to a pale blue, and chromosome number differences existing between the populations of Commelina communis. The dark blue flowered taxa chromosome number is 44 and in the pale blue taxa it is 72. The wild white flowered Chrysanthemum is Chrysanthemum zawadskii Herb. ssp. acutilobum and which has finely lobed leaves, and has 54 chromosome in the root tip cells.
For the Han-river estuary and DMZ where white-naped crane (Grus vipio; endangered migratory bird) stopover or spend winter, the habitat composition and the habitat use pattern of white-naped crane were analyzed with the position data obtained by the satellite tracking method. By the use of geographic information system (GIS), the percent composition of seven habitat categories of white naped-crane data points (n=228) was analyzed. The chi-square test showed that the white-naped crane habitat use pattern was significantly different (p<0.05) from that of random points (n=228). It means that white-naped crane select and use particular habitat area in the Han-river estuary and DMZ.
