Predicting Habitat Suitability of Carnivorous Alert Alien Freshwater Fish (포식성 유입주의 어류에 대한 서식처 적합도 평가)

  • Alien species are known to threaten regional biodiversity globally, which has increased global interest regarding introduction of alien species. The Ministry of Environment of Korea designated species that have not yet been introduced into the country with potential threat as alert alien species to prevent damage to the ecosystem. In this study, potential habitats of Esox lucius and Maccullochella peelii, which are predatory and designated as alert alien fish, were predicted on a national basis. Habitat suitability was evaluated using EHSM (Ecological Habitat Suitability Model), and water temperature data were input to calculate Physiological Habitat Suitability (PHS). The prediction results have shown that PHS of the two fishes were mainly controlled by heat or cold stress, which resulted in biased habitat distribution. E. lucius was predicted to prefer the basins at high latitudes (Han and Geum River), while M. peelii preferred metropolitan areas. Through these differences, it was expected that the invasion pattern of each alien fish can be different due to thermal preference. Further studies are required to enhance the model's predictive power, and future predictions under climate change scenarios are required to aid establishing sustainable management plans.

Evaluation and comparison of water balance and budget forecasts considering the domestic and industrial water usage pattern (생활 및 공업용수 물이용 패턴을 고려한 물수급 전망 비교 및 고찰)

  • In this study, monthly water use data were collected for 5 years from the 65 local governments included in the Han-river basin and a typical water usage ratios and patterns were calculated. The difference in water shortage was compared by considering the water usage patterns using the water balance and budget analysis model (MODSIM) and data base. As a result, it was confirmed that the change occurred in the range of -3.120% to +4.322% compared to the monthly constant ratio by period. In addition, when applying the patterns in the water balance model, 17 of the 28 middle watershed showed changes in the quantity of water shortage and the domestic and industrial water shortage would decrease about 8.0% during the maximum drought period. If it is applied in conjunction with predictive research on water usage patterns reflecting climate change, social and regional characteristics in the future, it will be possible to establish a more realistic water supply forecasts and a reliable national water resources plan.

Flow rate prediction at Paldang Bridge using deep learning models (딥러닝 모형을 이용한 팔당대교 지점에서의 유량 예측)

  • Recently, in the field of water resource engineering, interest in predicting time series water levels and flow rates using deep learning technology that has rapidly developed along with the Fourth Industrial Revolution is increasing. In addition, although water-level and flow-rate prediction have been performed using the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) model that can predict time-series data, the accuracy of flow-rate prediction in rivers with rapid temporal fluctuations was predicted to be very low compared to that of water-level prediction. In this study, the Paldang Bridge Station of the Han River, which has a large flow-rate fluctuation and little influence from tidal waves in the estuary, was selected. In addition, time-series data with large flow fluctuations were selected to collect water-level and flow-rate data for 2 years and 7 months, which are relatively short in data length, to be used as training and prediction data for the LSTM and GRU models. When learning time-series water levels with very high time fluctuation in two models, the predicted water-level results in both models secured appropriate accuracy compared to observation water levels, but when training rapidly temporal fluctuation flow rates directly in two models, the predicted flow rates deteriorated significantly. Therefore, in this study, in order to accurately predict the rapidly changing flow rate, the water-level data predicted by the two models could be used as input data for the rating curve to significantly improve the prediction accuracy of the flow rates. Finally, the results of this study are expected to be sufficiently used as the data of flood warning system in urban rivers where the observation length of hydrological data is not relatively long and the flow-rate changes rapidly.

  • The Riparian Buffer Zone(RBZ) is a sustainable social-ecological system created in the middle zone between water and land. For the RBZ, close communication with the local community is important, and it is necessary to promote it as a communicative environmental planning process. In this study, for the RBZ project, three strategies are presented as a communicative act to understand and implement planning. First, government-led projects were avoided and improved to a process in which citizens and stakeholders participated together, centered on local partnership. Second, it was intended to introduce design criterias in terms of enhancing the function of ecosystem services that citizens can sympathize with, and to increase acceptance and awareness through the planning of preferred spaces and facilities. Third, after a balanced plan for habitats, water cycle-based ecological environment, ecological experience and open space, citizens felt the restoration effect and value as an ecological resources, and a system was prepared to participate in the operation and management. This study will work as a process model based on citizens's participation. In addition, it will be possible to provide lessons for the change of the policy paradigm for the RBZ and the implementation of similar projects in the future.

A study on the Changes in the water level-flow relationship curve by the operation of Nakyang Weir in the Dongjin River (동진강 낙양 보 운영에 의한 수위-유량 관계곡선식의 변화)

  • 동진강 유역은 김제평야를 품고 있어 다른 지역에 비해 농지면적이 차지하는 비중이 크며, 이에 따라 전체 용수 사용량에서 농업용수의 비중이 절대적으로 높은 유역이다. 낙양 보는 동진강 중·상류에 위치한 이수시설로 상류에 위치한 섬진강댐과 같이 동진강 유역의 농업용수 공급에 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 낙양 보는 현재 동진강 방수문 4문, 김제간선 취입수문 2문, 정읍간선 취입수문 1문이 설치되어 있다. 관개기에는 동진강 도수로의 수문을 폐쇄하여 동진강 본류로의 하천유지용수를 차단하고 김제 배수로의 수문을 운용하여 농업용수를 공급하고 있으며 수혜구역의 용수수요 변화 및 기상상황, 하천상황에 따라 탄력적으로 운영하고 있다. 이러한 가동 보 운영으로 인하여 다양한 수위-유량관계의 변동성이 발생한다. 본 연구에서는 가동 보 운영에 따른 수위-유량관계 곡선식의 변동성을 확인하기 위해 동진강 유역 낙양보 상류에 위치한 정읍시(거산교)관측소를 대상관측소로 선정하였다. 정읍시(거산교)관측소는 2012년에 개발된 수위-유량관계곡선을 2021년까지 사용하였고, 2022년 수위-유량관계곡선식 검증과 재개발을 위하여 유량측정을 실시하였다. 2012년에 개발된 수위-유량관계곡선은 검토 결과 강우에 의한 수위 상승시 보 완전 개방 상태의 측정성과를 확보하여 수위-유량관계 곡선식을 개발하였다. 그 결과 가동 보를 운영하는 3월~9월은 상류에 위치한 정읍시(행정교)관측소와 상하류 역전 현상이 발생하였고, 매년 비정상적인 유량이 산정되는 결과를 초래하였다. 2022년 신뢰도 높은 유량자료와 수위-유량관계곡선식 개발을 위해 낙양 보 완전개방 및 부분개방에 따른 다양한 유량측정성과와 낙양 보 수문 모니터링 결과를 확보하였다. 낙양 보는 2022년 1월~3월, 10월~12월은 수문 6문을 완전 개방하여 동진강에 하천유지용수를 공급하고, 4월부터 동진강 방수문을 폐쇄하여 농번기 농업용수를 확보한 후, 5월~9월에 확보된 농용수를 김제 배수문 2문을 부분개방하면서 공급하는 방식이다. 이 기간동안 낙양 보 수문에 대한 모니터링을 위해 정읍시(거산교)관측소 수위자료에 대한 검토를 실시하였으며, 유량측정시에는 정확한 유량측정성과와 곡선식 확인을 위하여 동일한 위치에서 측정을 수행하였다. 또한, 수위 또는 유량이 변하는 구간은 연속측정을 실시하였으며, 모니터링 결과와 유량측정성과를 바탕으로 수위-유량관계 변화를 분석하였다. 그 결과 저수위1식은 수문 완전개방, 저수위2식은 수문 완전폐쇄, 저수위3~6식은 수문 부분개방 곡선식을 개발하였으며, 저수위 구간은 낙양보 운영에 따라 총 27차례 기간분리가 발생하였다. 결과적으로 본 연구에서는 낙양 보 운영에 따른 다수의 유량측정성과와 모니터링 자료를 확보하였으며, 확보한 유량측정성과의 분석을 통한 신뢰도 높은 수위-유량관계곡선식을 개발하였고 이를 통해 생산된 유량자료는 정확도가 매우 높은 것으로 분석되었다.

Analysis of Tree Roughness Evaluation Methods Considering Depth-Dependent Roughness Coefficient Variation (수심별 조도계수 변화를 고려한 수목 조도공식 특성 분석)

  • Riverine tree management is crucial in realizing a balance between flood control and ecological preservation, which requires an accurate assessment of the impact of trees on river water elevations. In this study, eight different formulas for evaluating vegetation roughness considering the drag force acting on trees, were reviewed, and the characteristics and applicability of these methods were evaluated from a practical engineering perspective. The study compared the characteristics of vegetation roughness measurement methods for calculated roughness coefficients at different water depths and analyzed factors such as effects of tree canopy width, tree density and diameter, and tree stiffness coefficient, and water level estimation results. A comparison of roughness coefficients at the same water depths revealed that the Kouwen and Fathi-Moghadam formulas and the Fischenich formula yield excessive drag coefficients compared to other formulas. Factors such as channel geometry, tree diameter, and tree density showed varying trends depending on the formula but did not exhibit excessive outliers. Formulas considering the tree stiffness coefficient, such as the Freeman et al.'s formula and the Whittaker et al.'s formula, showed significant variations in drag coefficients depending on the stiffness coefficient. When applied to small- and medium-sized virtual rivers in South Korea using the drag coefficient results from the eight formulas, the results indicated a maximum increase in water level of approximately 0.2 to 0.4 meters. Based on this review, it was concluded that the Baptist et al., Huthoff et al., Cheng, Luhar, and Nepf's formulas, which exhibit similar characteristics and low input data uncertainties, are suitable for practical engineering applications.

Operational Strategies of a Bus-Exclusive Lane Using Barrier Transfer Systems to Control Tidal Traffic Flows (비대칭적 중방향 교통류 대응을 위한 이동식 중앙분리대 활용 버스전용차로 도입 전략 분석)

  • Lane management with a central variable lane(s) (or reversible lane) where the traffic flow is temporarily reversed in one or more lanes during peak periods has been evaluated as an effective strategy to alleviate congestion caused by tidal traffic flows. However, due to traffic safety issues, such a movable barrier system can be considered as an alternative to supplement the existing its operation facilities such as static and/or dynamic signs and special pavement markings. In addition, when combined with a bus exclusive lane strategy, its effectiveness could be greatly increased. The objective of this study is to propose a feasibility analysis procedure for operational strategies of a bus-exclusive lanes using a barrier transfer system (BTS) for urban expressways. To this end, a case study was conducted on two urban expressways on the west side of the Han River in Seoul. As a result, temporary operation during rush hour in the morning was found to be most effective. The results presented in this study are expected to serve as a basis for establishing bus-exclusive lane operation strategies using similar systems in the future.

A Study on the Water-Faring Community and Architectural Forms of the 'Tanka People' in Macau from the Ming and Qing Dynasties to the Modern Period (명청-근대시기 마카오 "수상인(水上人)"의 취락 및 건축유형 연구)

  • The compositions of ethnic groups in Macau vary with time. Prior to the opening of the port, the majority of the residents in Macau were Chinese people, including those living on land and at sea. After the port was opened, with the increase of Portugal businessmen and missionaries, the population was divided into Chinese people and foreigners (so-called 'Yiren' or 夷人 in Chinese). Chinese people living on land were mainly of Hakka, Fujian, and Cantonese descent. Those living at sea were referred to as 'Tanka People' (named 'Danmin' or 蜑民in Chinese). They lived on floating boats for their entire lives and were similar to the 'drifters' in Japan. Since modern times, many refugees from mainland China and Southeast Asia flooded into Macau due to warfare. The development of industrialization required a larger number of laborers, and some 'coolies' entered Macau in legal or illegal ways, making it a multi-ethnic city. However, the Tanka people were not considered a minority ethnic group under the national ethnic policy of 56 ethnic groups since they did not have an exclusive language and shared dialects in different regions. As the ports inhabited by Tanka people gradually restored foreign trade, the boats and stilt houses used by Tanka people were dismantled to expand the infrastructure area of the ports. Many Tanka people began to live on land and marry people on land, leading to the disappearance of the Tanka group in Macau. The fishing boats and stilt houses used by Tanka people have also disappeared, with only a few remaining in areas such as Pearl River Delta and Hong Kong. This paper examines the natural and social environment of Tanka people in Macau from the Ming and Qing dynasties to the Republic of China, as well as the adaptive changes they adopted for the aforementioned environment in terms of living space and architectural type, on the basis of summarizing the historical activities of Tanka people. Finally, this study provides a layout plan and interior structure of the most commonly used boat for Tanka people from the Ming and Qing dynasties to the Republic of China, with the use of CAD and other technical software, along with reference to written historical documentation, and provides a case study for further research on the architectural history of Macau's inner harbor cities, from anthropological and folklore perspectives.

Hydrochemical and Microbial Community Characteristics of Spring, Surface Water and Groundwater at Samtong in Cheorwon, South Korea (강원도 철원 샘통과 주변 지표수 및 지하수의 수리화학 및 미생물 군집 특성 연구)

  • Hydrochemical characteristics and microbial communities of spring (Samtong), surface water, and groundwater in Cheorwon, Korea, were analyzed. Field surveys and water quality analyses were undertaken at 10 sampling points for five spring, two surface, and three groundwater samples on 15 December 2022. Hydrochemical analysis revealed that most water samples were Ca-HCO3 type and that water-rock interactions were the predominant mineral source. Radon concentrations were <1 kBq m-3 for surface water, 1~10 kBq m-3 for spring water, and 1~1,000 kq m-3 for groundwater. Microbial cluster analysis showed that the main phyla were Proteobacteria, Planctomyceta, Verrucomicrobia, Acidobacteria, and Actinomycetota.Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis indicated that water temperature, pH, and Si content were closely related to microorganism content. NMDS and canonical correspondence analysis results revealed that environmental factors affecting spring water were temperature, and Mg and Si concentrations, particularly for Acidobacteria and Proteobacteria, and Pseudomonas brenneri. Both hydrochemical and microbial community analyses yielded similar results at some spring and groundwater sampling points, likely due to the effects of a basalt aquifer.

An Analysis on Indicators of Water Taxi User Service in Seoul Using Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) (중요도-만족도 분석을 활용한 서울시 수상택시 이용자 서비스지표 분석)

  • Since October 11th, 2007, water taxi service in Han River has been operated for commuting and sightseeing. However, it is less popularized than expected because of economical problem and accessibility. Therefore, this paper develops service estimation items for water taxi based upon literature review on public transportation. It also conducts survey questionnaire and IPA (Importance Performance Analysis) Analysis to analyze service characteristics of water taxi users and provide several implications. The results are follows: First, economical problem should be solved out as showed in the 'main improvement' item. Second, accessibility, informativeness and convenience in the 'required improvement' item, and security and punctuality in the 'keep up the good work' item are presented. Third, kindness and soundness are showed in the 'the maintenance of current situation' item. All in all, if municipal considers economical problem, accessibility, informativeness, and convenience as it improves water tax service, it will make it possible to attract more water taxi users.
