This paper presents the empirical formulas for determining the design-width for medium rivers in the Han river basin. The design flood, the watershed ares, and the channel slope of 216 medium rivers in the Han river basin are collected. the design width formulas are then determined by 1) the least squares (LS) method, 2)the least median squares (LMS) method, and 3) the reweighted least squares method based on the LMS (RLS). The six types of formulas are considered to determine the acceptable type for medium streams in the Han river basin. The root mean squared errors (RMSE), the absolute mean (AME) errors, and the mean errors (ME) are computed to test the formulas derived by three regression methods. It si found that the equation related stream width to the watershed area and the channel slope is acceptable for determining the design width for medium streams in the Han river basin. It is expected that the equations proposed by this study be used an index for determining the design-width for medium streams in the Han river basin.

A 3-D hydrodynamic model is applied in the Han River Estuary system, Gyeonggi Bay, to understand the mechanisms of salt transport. The model run is conducted for 245 days (January 20 to September 20, 2020), including dry and wet seasons. The reproducibility of the model about variation of current velocity and salinity is validated by comparing model results with observation data. The salt transport (FS) is calculated for the northern and southern part of Yeomha channel where salt exchange is active. To analyze the mechanisms of salt transport, FS is decomposed into three components, i.e. advective salt transport derived from river flow (QfS0), diffusive salt transport due to lateral and vertical shear velocity (FE), and tidal oscillatory salt transport due to phase lag between current velocity and salinity (FT). According to the monthly average salt transport, the salt in both dry and wet seasons enters through the southern channel of Ganghwa-do by FT. On the other hand, the salt exits through the eastern channel of Yeongjong-do by QfS0. The salt at Han River Estuary enters towards the upper Han River by FT in dry season, whereas that exits to the open sea by QfS0 in wet season. As a result, mechanisms of salt transport in the Han River Estuary depend on the interaction between QfS0 causing transport to open sea and FT causing transport to the upper Han River.

A heteronemertean, Yininemertes pratensis, was collected in Han River Estuary, South Korea. This estuarine nemertean has been known by the local fishermen for harmful effects to the glass eels, juveniles of Japanese eel Anguilla japonica, migrating to fresh water. The present study confirmed the neurotoxic effects of this heteronemertean ribbon worm at the cellular level. Derivative types of neurotoxic tetrodotoxin (TTX), 5,11-dideoxy TTX (m/z 288) and 11-norTTX-6(S)-01 (m/z 305.97), were identified through HPLC and MALDI-TOF MS. However, significant neurotoxicity was confirmed in the fraction containing an undefined molecule corresponding to the 291.1 (m/z) peak, when tested in rat primary astrocytes and dorsal ganglion cells. This study is the first to report neurotoxins of the estuarine nemertean, fairly abundant in the Han River estuary, and suggests the long-term monitoring of population dynamics and surveillance of the toxicity in this river estuary.

Time-lag and amplitudes of the fluctuation of groundwater level are used to determine hydraulic parameters around Han River. The groundwater level at observation wells fluctuates between highest and lowest responding to the Han River level. The factors affecting the groundwater fluctuation are examined. The transmisivity of the Han River alluvium calculated from the measured water table fluctuations measured ranges from 9.39${\times}$10$^1$to 4.02${\times}$10$^3$㎡/day. Based on the hydrogeological data along the river sides, the flow characteristics of groundwater for water level fluctuations were simulated using a ground water flow model MODFLOW.
To understand the effects of fluctuations in dam discharge due to river environments and phytoplankton communities, we monitored such environments and phytoplankton communities biweekly, from February 2001 to February 2002 and from February 2004 to February 2005, in the lower Han River (LHR), South Korea. The phytoplankton abundance during the dry season was approximately two times higher than that during the rainy season. In particular, fluctuations in diatom assemblages, which constituted over 70% of the total phytoplankton abundance, were affected severely by the changes in the discharge. When a large quantity of water in a dam was discharged into the LHR, the conductivity and the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) decreased rapidly, whereas the concentrations of suspended solids (SS), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved silica (DSi) increased immediately. Time-delayed relationship also revealed that the dam discharge had an immediately significant negative relationship with phytoplankton abundance. On the whole, fluctuations in phytoplankton communities in the LHR were influenced much more by hydrodynamics such as dam discharge than by the availability of nutrients. Thus, the variability in these concentrations usually parallels the strength of river flow that is associated with summer rainfall, with higher values during periods of high river discharge.
In this study, we aimed to analyze the characteristics of water quality variation at Kyeongan Stream for a decade and to investigate by the flow-loading equation. The correlation analysis of water quality parameters and the influence factors were examined by statistical analysis. The characteristics of water quality variation showed that the fluctuations in $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$ and TOC were repeated from year to year. TN and TP were decreased by year. By the flow-loading equation, the concentrations of $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$, TOC and TN were decreased when the flow rate was on the rise. However, the flow did not affect the concentration of TP. According to correlation analysis, $BOD_5$ was highly correlated with $COD_{Mn}$ and TOC with the correlation coefficients of 0.890 (p<0.01) and 0.721 (p<0.01). The result of factor analysis, we identified that the water quality in Kyeongan Stream has been highly influenced by the organic matter index, followed by nitrogenous substance depending on the seasonal variations and the influx of suspended solid in accordance with the increase of flow.

In this study, Uiam-sediment(US) and Gongji-sediment(GS) were incubated to analyze the formation of phytoplankton community and occurrences of odorous compounds from benthic cyanobacteria. For the phytoplankton, 45 and 40 taxa were found in GS and US, respectively. The phytoplankton species detected in the harmful algae included Microcystis, Anabaena and Oscillatoria. As a result, a standing crop of phytoplankton appeared to be in the range of $0.9{\sim}71.8{\times}10^3$ cells/mL in GS, $0.8{\sim}51.2{\times}10^3$ cells/mL in US, and as the incubation progressed, benthic cyanobacteria was increased. The highest number of akinetes was shown in the initial incubation, and akinetes was reduced by 10% on day 4 of incubation start. After reduction of akinetes incubated for 4 days in US and 15 days in GS, Anabaena appeared from the surface water. Benthic cyanobacteria such as Oscillatoria tenuis, O. limosa and Lyngbya hieronymusii was dominant in GS (max. $3.96{\times}10^6cells/cm^2$) and US (max. $5.77{\times}10^6cells/cm^2$), forming cyanobacterial mats in sediment surface. Cyanobacterial mats were suspended after 10~12 days incubation in GS and US. Before and after the suspension of cyanobacterial mats, the concentration of geosmin was the highest in GS(115 ng/L) and US(175 ng/L). In the second suspension of cyanobacterial mats in GS, the concentration of 2-MIB was increased to the range of 22~92 ng/L.
To evaluate the relationship between dynamics of cyanobacteria and odorous compounds, a monthly monitoring of water quality and phytoplankton were conducted at the three serial lakes (Lake Ui-am, Lake Cheong-pyeong and Lake Pal-dang) in the North Han River for 11 times from May 2014 to March 2015. In the three serial lakes, phytoplankton communities showed that seasonal changes in Bacillariophyceae-Cyanophyceae-Bacillariophyceae. Anabaena and Pseudanabaena were dominant species in August and September 2014. At the same time the odors (Geosmin, 2-MIB) were also detected with high concentration. Relationship between environmental factors and cyanobacterial abundance showed a significant correlation with Anabaena circinalis and geosmin (r=0.983, p<0.01). In the case of Pseudanabaena limnetica showed a significant correlation of total nitrogen (r=0.685, p<0.01) and NO3-N (r=0.723, p<0.01). In addition, similarly Pseudanabaena limnetica and 2-MIB (r=0.717, p<0.01) was high. The odorous compounds appeared in the North Han River water were considered to be a direct relationship with cyanobacteria.
Geochemical data of the Han river water, including four tributary water samples in the main Han river are presented in this paper. The concentration of dissolved ions in the North Han river water decreases in order of Ca>Na>K>Mg and HCO$_3$>NO$_3$>SO$_4$>Cl, which it mainly affected by the chemical weathering of granite and gneiss in the drainage basin. Meanwhile, the South Han river water shows a decreasing order of Ca>Mg>Na>K and HCO$_3$>SO$_4$>NO$_3$>Cl, which is controlled by the bed rock geology of carbornate rooks and the inflow of acid mine drainage from the metal and coal mines in the Taebaegsan and Hwanggangri areas. The main Han river waters are characterized by unusually high concentration of Na, Cl and SO$_4$ (Ca>Na>K>Mg and HCO$_3$>SO$_4$>CI>NO), indicating a significant anthropogenic pollution by human activities in the metropolitan Seoul city. The geochemical data of the Han river waters from 1981 through 1996 to 1999 records a significant increase in SO$_4$ and NO$_3$, which responsible for the increasing arid mane drainage and municipal anthropogenic pollution.
Odor compounds (geosmin, 2-MIB) have been causing problems in the Bukhan River system, but the causative organisms have not been clearly identified. To evaluate the relationship between dynamics of microbial community and odor compounds, two times monthly monitoring of water quality and microbial community from the three serial lakes (Lake Uiam, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Paldang) in the Bukhan River system were conducted from April to October 2017. The odor compounds were analyzed by HS-SPME analysis method using GC/MS. Bacteria communities were identified at the class level by NGS analysis. Actinobacteria and Betaproteobacteria were dominant taxon in bacteria community of three serial lakes. In the case of phytoplankton communities showed that seasonal changes by Bacillariophyceae and Cryptophyceae in spring, Cyanobacteria in summer, and Bacillariophyceae and Cryptophyceae in autumn. Dominant species was Dolichospermum (=Anabaena), Microcystis and Pseudanabaena in Bukhan River system in all study period. At the same time the odors geosmin and 2-MIB were also detected at high concentration. There is a significant positive correlation between proportion of Actinobaceria and 2-MIB concentration (r=0.491, p<0.01). In addition, proportion of cyanobacteria showed a significant correlation of geosmin (r=0.381, p<0.05) and 2-MIB (r=0.386, p<0.05) concentration. In this study, odor compounds in the Bukhan River system are considered to be a direct relationship between with Actinobacteria and cyanobacteria.
