  • Influence of the grating half-period fluctuation on the normalized coupling coefficient has been studied by an effective index transfer matrix method in quarter wavelength shifted(QWS) DFB lasers. The laser facets are assumed to be perfectly antireflection coated, and the period fluctuation is modeled by two correlated Gaussian random variables. In the presence of the random fluctuation in the grating period, effective normalized coupling coefficient is reduced because the in-phase feedback strength Is weakened. We have shown that the normalized coupling coefficient determined from the side mode spacing is less than the effective coupling coefficient, and the normalized coupling coefficient determined from the mode spacing or spontaneous emission spectrum does not properly represent the feedback strength of the grating.

  • We have fabricated and characterized MMI (Multimode Interference) coupled ring resonator with the total internal reflection mirrors and the semiconductor optical amplifier for the integration of the WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) system. The TIR (Total Internal Reflection) mirrors were fabricated by self-aligned process and had losses of about 0.71 dB per mirror. Coupling in and out of a resonator was achieved using the extremely small MMI couplers. The MMI length and width used in the experiment were $119{\mu}m$ and $9{\mu}m$, respectively. The resulting FSR (Free Spectral Range) and on-off ratio were approximately 1.333 nm (162 GHz) and 13 dB, respectively.

  • In this paper, we demonstrate a facile fabrication technique for a periodically aligned metal nanoparticle array, for a narrow-band plasmonic absorber. The metal nanoparticles are fabricated by e-beam evaporation and heat treatment processes on top of a periodic aluminum groove template. The plasmonic absorber is constructed with the transferred metal nanoparticle array, sputtered 33-nm-thick $Al_2O_3$, and 200-nm-thick metal reflector layers on silicon substrate. 46-nm-diameter and 76-nm-lattice metal-nanoparticle-array-based plasmonic absorber has performed as a narrow-band absorber with a central wavelength of 572 nm and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 109.9 nm.

  • NDIR $CO_2$ gas sensor was built with ASIC implemented thermopile sensor which included temperature sensor and unique elliptical waveguide structures in this paper. The temperature dependency of dual infrared sensor module ($CO_2$ and reference IR sensors) has been characterized and its output voltage characteristics according to the temperature and gas concentration were proposed for the first time. NDIR $CO_2$ gas and reference IR sensors showed linear output voltages according to the variation of ambient temperatures from 243 K to 333 K and their slopes were 14.2 mV/K and 8.8 mV/K, respectively. The output voltages of temperature sensor also presented a linear dependency according to the ambient temperature and could be described with V(T)=-3.191+0.0148T(V). The output voltage ratio between $CO_2$ and reference IR sensors revealed irrelevant to the changes of ambient temperatures and gave a constant value around 1.6255 with standard deviation 0.008 at 0 ppm. The output voltage of $CO_2$ gas sensor at zero ppm $CO_2$ gas consisted of two components; one is caused by the HPB (half pass-band) of IR filter and the other is attributed to the part of $CO_2$ absorption wavelength. The characteristics of output voltages of $CO_2$ gas sensor could be accurately modeled with three parameters which are dependent upon the ambient temperatures and represented small average error less than 1.5% with 5% standard deviation.

  • Vortex lock-on or resonance in the flow behind a circular cylinder is investigated from a time-resolved PIV when a single frequency oscillation is superimposed on the mean incident velocity. Measurements are made of the $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ and streamwise vortices in the wake-transition regime at the Reynolds number 360. Streamwise vortices at the lock-on and natural shedding states are observed, as well as the changes in the wake region with the change of the shedding frequency of lock-on state. When lock-on occurs, the vortex shedding frequency is found to be half the oscillation frequency as expected from previous experiments. At the lock-on state, the $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ vortices are observed to be more disordered by the increased strength and spanwise wavelength of the streamwise vortices, which leads to a strong three-dimensional motion. Recirculation and vortex formation region at the lock-on state is reduced as the oscillating frequency is increased. By comparing the Reynolds stresses at the lock-on and natural shedding states, $\bar{u'u'}\;and \;\bar{u'u'}$ at the lock-on state are concentrated on the shear layer around the cylinder. The $\bar{u'u'}\;at\;f_o/f_n=2.0$ has a large value near the centerline, compared with that of other cases. Considering the traces of maximum of u', in the wake region near the cylinder, wake width at the lock-on state is wider than that at the natural shedding state.

  • We present a spectroscopic study of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) Cygnus Loop using the fifth Data Release (DR5) of LAMOST. The LAMOST (Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope) features both a large field-of-view (about 20 deg2) and a large aperture (~4 m in diameter), which allow us to obtain 4000 spectra simultaneously. Its wavelength coverage ranges from ${\sim}3700{\AA}$ to $9000{\AA}$ with a spectral resolution of $R{\approx}1800$. The Cygnus Loop is a prototype of middle-aged SNRs, which has advantages of being bright, large in angular size (${\sim}3.8^{\circ}{\times}3^{\circ}$), and relatively unobscured by dust. Along the line of sight of the Cygnus Loop, 2747 LAMOST DR5 spectra are found in total, which are spatially distributed over the entire remnant. Among them, 778 spectra are selected based on the presence of emission lines (i.e., [O III]${\lambda}5007$, Ha, and [S II]${\lambda}{\lambda}$ 6717, 6731) for further visual inspection. About half of them (336 spectra) show clear spectral features to confirm their association with the remnant, 370 spectra show stellar features only, and 72 spectra are ambiguous and need further investigation. For those associated with the remnant, we identify emission lines and measure their intensities. Spectral properties considerably vary within the remnant, and we compare them with theoretical models to derive physical properties of the SNR such as electron density and temperature, and shock velocity. While some line ratios are in good agreement with model prediction, others cannot be explained by simple shock models with a range of shock velocities. We discuss these discrepancies between model predictions and the observations and finally highlight the powerfulness of the LAMOST data to investigate spatial variations of physical properties of the Cygnus Loop.

  • In this paper, a wideband two-layer H-shaped microstrip antenna for WLAN is designed. To increase the bandwidth of microstrip patch antenna a configuration of stacked type using parastic element is used. Furthermore, to reduce the size of microstrip patch antenna, two techniques are employed . the first one is H-shaped patch type and the second one is that the main radiator and parastic patch are shorted to the ground plane using ten shorting posts. The antenna bandwidth and radiation characteristics are calculated by ENSEMBLE ver. 5.0 simulation software, and compared with the experimental results. Experiment results show that the bandwidth of antenna in 740MHz centered at 5.46㎓(13.5%), which is close agreement with the calculations, 770MHz(13%). Also, the antenna size can be reduced by 71.5% compared with the half wavelength rectangular microstrip antenna using the same substrate at the same frequency.

  • In this paper, general methods for enhancing the transmission efficiency through the small subwavelength aperture in an infinite conducting plane are considered first by use of the transmission-resonant aperture like the ridged circular aperture structure, second by employing the transmission-resonant cavity structure. In particular, the maximum transmission cross section is found to be $\frac{2G{\lambda}^2}{4{\pi}}[m^2]$ for the two structures, where G is the gain of the aperture in the output half space. As experimental works, the impedance matching characteristics are investigated for the cases that above two structures are incorporated as a potential near field microscopic probe in the waveguide end. As a complementary problem to the above transmission-resonant aperture problem, some discussions are also given on the scattering resonance by the scattering object much smaller than the wavelength. This discussion may provide a good understanding of the physics for the phenomena that the maximum scattering cross section is much larger than the physical size of the atom in atomic physics area.

  • This paper presents two ground plane effects due to the size of two rectangular apertures for two-wire transmission line with equal line length crossing the changeable rectangular apertures in infinite ground planes. The CST MWS is used to determine the characteristics of the insertion loss of the transmission line from the load section in accordance with the ground plane aperture size. The results show that the insertion gain and the insertion loss are periodically observed for the multiple frequency of the half wavelength resonance by the wire length when the transmission line is nearby to horizontal side or vertical side of the aperture. The measurements of the insertion loss are performed to verify the theoretical analysis.

  • In order to analyze the quantitative characteristics of acoustic streaming, experimental setup of 3-D stereoscopic PIV(particle imaging velocimetry) was designed and quantitative ultrasonic flow fields in the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and heat source were measured. Utilizing acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration, surface temperature drop of cooling object was also measured. The study on smart cooling method by acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration was performed due to the empirical relations of flow pattern, average flow velocity, different gaps, and enhancement on cooling rates in the gap. Average velocity fields and maximum acoustic streaming velocity in the open gap between the stationary cylindrical heat source and ultrasonic vibrator were experimentally measured at no vibration, resonance, and non-resonance. It was clearly observed that the enhancement of cooling rates existed owing to the acoustic air flow in the gap at resonance and non-resonance induced by ultrasonic vibration. The ultrasonic wave propagating into air in the gap creates steady-state secondary eddy called acoustic streaming which enhances heat transfer from the heat source to encompassing air. The intensity of the acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration experimentally depended upon the gap between the heat source and ultrasonic vibrator. The ultrasonic vibration at resonance caused the increase of the acoustic streaming velocity and convective heat transfer augmentation when the flow fields by 3D stereoscopic PIV and temperature drop of the heat source were measured experimentally. The acoustic streaming velocity of air enhancement on cooling rates in the gap is maximal when the gap agrees with the multiples of half wavelength of the ultrasonic wave, which is specifically 12 mm.
