  • In these days, mostof marine structures are constructed by reinforcement concrete due to economic reason. Theoretically, it is widely recognized that rebar in sound concrete is safe against corrosion because of the high alkalinity of concrete. However, corrosion for reinforcement concrete made by marine aggregate and exposed to ocean enviroments has become serious social problem. Especially in Korea, with the rapid economic growth construction activities have been accelerated and needed more natural aggregate. Therefore, inevitably marine aggregate had to be used due to limitation of good quality aggregate. In this study, as a part of efforts to establish the fundamental counterplan on corrosion problems related to marine aggregate, concrete specimens with chloride containing material and inhibitor have been studied. And, in order to analyze corrosion characteristics several electrochemical techniques including half-cell potential survery, linear and cyclic polarization tests were carried out.

  • This paper reviews available techniques for monitoring corrosion of steel in concrete. The need for early detection and diagnosis of corrosion related deterioration in reinforced structures is widely acknowledged. This is particularly important in reinforced concrete structures on account of the economic and social significance of the problem. The current generally used on-site procedure for corrosion monitoring of reinforced structures employs a method of half-cell surface potential measurements. While the technique has provided a useful means of delineating areas of high or low corrosion risk, there are difficulties in its use and interpretation when assessing rates of deterioration. Electrochemical techniques are by far the most suitable for corrosion monitoring purpose and meet most of the requirements. The aim of this paper is to describe the electric resistance sensor(ER sensor) and electrochemical techniques employed to monitor and estimate corrosion rates of reinforcement. Early detection and diagnosis of corrosion hazards allows preventive measures to be taken, hence the typically expensive repair of severely deteriorated structures can be avoided.

  • Properties of a good drug include safety, efficacy, half-life and bioavailability. With the current approach to drug discovery based on receptor-based and cell-based screening methods, compounds are frequently moved into development with poor bioavailability. With low bioavailability, drug administration is typically limited to parenteral routes, thus limiting the potential wide-spread utility of these therapeutic agents. The first and most important factor limiting a drug's bioavailability is the intestinal membrane permeability which in turn determines the maximum fi:action of the dose administered that can be absorbed. We have recently utilized new intubation methods for performing permeability measurements in humans and establishing a fundamental human data base for correlating intestinal jejunal membrane permeabilities with permeabilities determined in other systems, e.g., animals, tissue culture, as well as physical chemical properties.

  • This paper summarizes the study on effect of ceramic waste powder as partial substitute to cement in binary blend and along with silica fume in ternary blend high strength concrete in normal and aggressive environments. Strength parameters such as compression & tension and durability indices such as corrosion measurement, deterioration, water absorption and porosity were studied. Ceramic waste powder was used in three different percentages namely 5, 10 and 15 with constant percentage of silica fume (1%) as substitutes to cement in ternary blend high strength concrete was investigated. After a detailed investigation, it was understood that concrete with 15% ceramic waste powder registered maximum performance. Increase of ceramic waste powder offered better resistance to deterioration of concrete.

  • Reinforced concrete structures covered creek for road vehicle located in urban areas have been experiencing corrosion of concrete and reinforcing steel caused by $H_2S$ gases generated by anaerobic bacterial. H2S gases react with oxygen and water to form sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$). This acid chemically attacks concrete, and sulfate ions penetrate into the concrete, causing rebar corrosion. In this work, to determine the conditions of RC culvert boxes which were constructed in the 1970s, various tests were conducted, including carbonation depth, compressive strength, half-cell potential measurements, and XRD analyses. Results indicated that the concrete deterioration was caused by sulfate attack and rebar corrosion. This paper discusses the evaluation on the durability of reinforced concrete structures covered creek for road vehicle.

  • Recently, antiwashout underwater concrete has used for underwater structure such as high strength massive concrete structures. When, concrete is placed in seawater the quality and durability of concrete could be doubt to especcially because the amount of cement placed in the concrete can be diminished by flowing seawater. In this study, antiwashout underwater concrete mixed with mineral admixtures for improvement of properties was placed in air, water, and salt water. Half-cell potential and current density was of specimens which made under different conditions measured for estimating corrosion degree. The experimental results demostrate that corrosion resistantce in saltwater was little and mineral admixtures improved properties of concrete.

  • As a fundamental study on the corrosion resistance of reinforced concrete structures using Natural Inorganic Minerals exposed to carbonation environment, The test specimens were concrete(W/C=60%) with Natural Inorganic Minerals content of 0%, 10%. Accelerated carbonation and autoclave corrosion accelerated curing were then conducted with them. The corrosion resistance of steel in concrete with Natural Inorganic Minerals content of 0%, 10% was examined by corrosion form, half-cell potential, polarization resistance, corrosion area and weight loss after 24 hours of autoclave corrosion accelerated curing. The results of the study showed that as for steel in concrete with Natural Inorganic Minerals content of 10%, the corrosion resistance was more excellent than steel in concrete with Natural Inorganic Minerals content of 0%.

  • Recently, increasement of usage contents of sea sand in constructing concrete structures due to insufficiency of high quality river sand, led to many studies for steel corrosion and control methods on it in concrete. But, domestic studies for threshold chloride contents of steel corrosion are not so many as those of foreign states. In this study, the electrochemical test as half cell potential measurement and linear polarization method to estimate the corrosion of steel in contents mixed with several levels chloride contents was performed, thereby, pre-mixed chloride were compared with results measured quantitatively for steel corrosion. And, based on these data, a trial to determine threshold chloride contents of steel corrosion was made.

  • The computerized cardiac analysis system, which acquires and analyzes the electrical activation signal propagating along the surface of the heart, is indispensible equipment for the open heart surgery and electrical cardiac study. In this paper, the design requirement and the electrical circuit analysis are performed to construct the multi-channel cardiac activation pre-amplifier necessary for a signal conditioning circuit. The general 64 channel configuration is expanded into 128 channels to enhance the spatial resolution on the mapped surface of the heart. The 128 channels pre-amplifier consists of input circuit, differential amplifier, right leg driven circuit and isolation part. It has distinct features; high voltage protection, leakage current limitation, isolation and the maximization of common mode rejection ratio with respect to the half-cell potential difference due to different electrode materials. The final pre-amplifier circuit is assembled with 8 boards, each of which composing of 16 channels.

  • The electrochemical methods of early detection and analysis of corrosion related deterioration in concrete reinforcement structures are very useful techniques. The generally using procedure for corrosion monitoring of reinforced structures employs a method of half-cell potential measurement. Whilst the technique has provided a useful means of delineating areas of high or low corrosion risk, there are difficulties in its use and interpretation, particularly when assessing corrosion rates of reinforcement. The aim of this study is to describe the AC-impedance method being employed to monitor and assess corrosion rates, to estimate corrosion mechanism of reinfrocement in laboratory conditions. The AC-impedance monitoring technique applies a small amplitude(20mV) AC signal to embedded steel in concrete and reference electrode (Cu/$CuSo_4$). We obtained over a wide frequency range(10MHz~1mHz) to produce a complex plane plot or Nyquist plot.
