  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of hair style and hair color on women's impression formation. The experimental design was $2{\times}3{\times}3$ (hair wave$\times$hair length$\times$hair color) factorial design by 3 independent variables. Subjects were 343 women in Seoul. Four factors were derived to account for the dimensions of impression formation. These were neatness, sociability, attractiveness, and femininity. The straight hairs were evaluated neater than the permed hairs, and the permed hairs were evaluated higher in sociability and attractiveness. The short hairs were perceived highest in sociability, and the long hairs were perceived high in attractiveness and femininity. The black hairs were perceived highest in neatness, the bright brown were perceived high in sociability and attractiveness, and dark brown were perceived high in femininity. Attractiveness had significant interaction effects depending on three independent variables: hair wave, lengths, and colors. Long black straight hair was perceived most attractive, and midium length black straight hair was least attractive. The light brown permed hairs were perceived high in attractiveness regardless of hair length. In the case of straight hair, the longer the hair length was, the younger the object women were perceived. The women with the long permed hair were perceived older than the women with short and midium length permed hair.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the images in men's hairstyle by hair color, tone, texture, and perceiver's gender, and to examine the characteristics of hairstyle appropriate to seasons. A quasi-experimental method by questionnaire was used, and the experimental design was $4{\times}3{\times}2{\times}2$(hair color$\times$tone$\times$texture$\times$perceiver's$\times$gender) factorial design. The subjects were 372 men and women in their 20s through 50s. five factors of men's hairstyle image were derived by factor analysis: individuality, dignity, romanticism, refinement, and activity. Black hair was perceived to be high in dignity and activity. Bright tone was perceived to be high in individuality, but low in dignity. Men's wave hair was perceived to be higher in individuality than straight hair, but lower in dignity. Perceiver's gender did not give significant influence on evaluation of all image factors. In brown, neutral tone was perceived to be higher in dignity. romanticism, and activity than dark or bright tone. In black, wave hair was perceived to be more refined than straight hair. Black hair matches with winter the most, and yellow matches with spring the most. In terms of tone, dark tone matches with winter; neutral tone matches with autumn; bright tone matches with summer. The results of this study verified that hair color and texture affect men's image perception, and matching hair colors are associated with seasons.

  • This research investigated the protective effect on hair for 3 commercial hair oil products containing UV filters upon UVA and UVB irradiation. Hair tresses each weighing 2 g were prepared from black virgin hair. Hair tresses treated with 0.5 g of hair oil were irradiated by UVA (365 nm) and UVB (302 nm) lamp for up to 600 hours. Color of hair was measured using a spectrocolorimeter, tensile strength and elongation of hair were measured using a biological tensile tester, surface morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscope. Experimental results were analyzed using SPSS statistical software. Hair color and tensile strength were both affected by UVA and UVB irradiation. Significant differences in the color and tensile strength were observed between untreated hair and hair treated with hair oils. Good UV protective effect observed in Oil 2 and Oil 3 was attributable to the type and the combination of UV filters contained in the products.

  • The aim of this study was to measure the hair melanins of various colors and to find the relationship between the quantity of melanins and hair color phenotypes in alpacas. According to the Munsell color system, 3 healthy alpacas were selected for each of the 22 different hair color phenotypes (66 alpacas altogether). Alpaca hair was taken from the lateral thoracic region and then dissolved with different solutions to obtain melanins. The values of alkali-soluble melanins (ASM), eumelanin (EM) and pheomelanin (PM) were measured by spectrophotometric assay, and labeled as Sp.ASM, Sp.EM and Sp.PM, respectively. Data were analyzed using SPSS11.5 software. Results showed that average Sp.ASM and Sp.PM were increased as the color deepened from white to black, ranging from 0.500 to 4.543 for Sp.ASM and from 0.268 to 1.457 for Sp.EM. However, average Sp.PM had no such apparent relationship with color. Based on the value of Sp.ASM and EM, 7 hues were produced and gray was a single hue. Most of the data were in a normal distribution (p>0.10). ANOVA analysis showed that mean values of Sp.ASM, Sp.EM and Sp.PM were significantly different (p<0.05). The results also showed that Sp.ASM was positively correlated with Sp.EM but the correlation between Sp.ASM and Sp.PM was not significantly different from 0. It is concluded that EM is the major constituent of alpaca hair melanin; there is a significant correlation among ASM, EM and alpaca hair colors, and EM is the most reliable parameter for distinguishing these groups.

For social value variable, materialism and traditionalism were investigated. Subjects were 343 women in Seoul. Perceiver's materialism gave a significant influence on perception of elegance. The less materialistic group evaluated the hair style of object person more elegant than the more materialistic group. The more traditional group evaluated bright brown hairs less pretty than the less traditional group. This means that traditional people have less preferable image on bright brown hairs compared to the black and dark brown hair as it is different from Korean traditional hair color. Medium straight hair styles were evaluated lowest in preference and individuality. Short straight hairs were evaluated as the most elegant style and medium permanent hairs as the least elegant one. Long wavy hairs were evaluated highest in femininity, and straight hairs were evaluated lower in prettiness and activity than wavy hairs. The bright brown hairs were evaluated as the most individual color, and black was the least one. The bright brown was perceived lowest in elegance. Black and dark brown of the short straight hair style were perceived much more elegant than the bright brown of the same style, and black long wavy hairs were evaluated highest in femininity. The present findings provide that social value, hair style, and hair color are significant characteristics when perceiving women's image.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy of juglone, which shows hish affinity to wool, for hair dyeing as a natural dye. Before dyeing hair with juglone, virgin hair was bleached by a conventional method using hair shops in the city. In order to study the dyeing properties of juglone on hair, the effects of dyeing conditions on dye uptake, color, tensile strength, and morphology were investigated. And the effect of Fe-mordanting on color change was also investigated. Dye uptake changed marginally as dye concentration increased in the range of 0.02-0.04g. Dye uptake increased progressively is dyeing time increased in the range of 10-20 min. Juglone produced YR colors on hair and the color of dyed hair got duller as juglone concentration increased. The hair was little damaged by bleaching, but cuticles were melted and stripped away by dyeing for longer time. Tensile strength retention decreased up to 65% at 20 min dyeing. Simultaneous mordanting with Fe did not improved dye uptake, but led to darker brown color compared with unmordanted hair.

  • Background: Over two decades of observations in the field in South East Asia and Hawai'i suggest that majority of the commercial dairy herds are of black hair coat. Hence a simple study to determine the accuracy of the observation was conducted with two large dairy herds in Hawaii in the mid-1990s. Methods: A retrospective study on longevity of Holstein cattle in the tropics was conducted using DairyComp-305 lactation information coupled with phenotypic evaluation of hair coat color in two large dairy farms. Cows were classified into 3 groups: a) black (B, >90%); b) black/white (BW, 50:50) and c) white (W, >90%). Cows with other hair coat distribution were excluded from the study. In farm A, 211 out of 970 cows were identified having 4 or more lactations. In farm B, 690 out of 1,350 cows were identified with 2 or more lactations for the study. Results: The regression analyses and the Wilcoxon-Log-rank test for survival probability showed that Holstein cattle with 90% black hair coat had greater longevity compared to Holstein cattle with 90% white hair coat. Conclusions: This study suggests that longevity of Holstein cattle in tropical regions was influenced by hair coat color and characteristics.
