To determine the cause of the population decline in Gobiobotia naktongensis, substrate preference and burying behaviour were investigated in this study. In general, the species was shown to prefer a substrate size of 1 mm or less, depending on the flow. In addition, the burying depth varied according to the size of the fish and increased with a decrease in water temperature. Our findings showed that the main cause of the population reduction was the physical changes in the substrate structure due to the dams or barrages construction. Notably, the accumulation of silt and mud in the substrate upon the formation of an upstream lentic water region for structural construction and bed armouring caused by scouring and reduced downstream inflow of fine sediment were deterministic in the fish habitat changes, causing problems in burying. As sand substrate structure is critical for the survival and inhabitation of psammophilous species, efficient strategies should be developed with proper habitat management to reduce the anthropogenic damage
In this study, Echo-sounder($E_s$) monitoring methodology was applied to test environmental impacts of artificial weirs(SCW and JSW) in the Yeongsan River on fish community and habitat structures at first time, and was compared with conventional fish sampling methodologies($C_s$). For the Es monitoring in the fields, parallel transect methods was employed in determining the survey distance interval with every 125 m within the upper-lower 2 km of the weirs. Four different fish sampling gears such as casting nets, kick nets, fyke nets, and gill nets were used for applications of $C_s$ monitoring methodology. According to the Echo-sounder monitoring, fish density, expressed as a number of individuals per square meter, along the longitudinal axis of the weir was significantly greater(JSW, t = 3.506, n = 30, p < 0.001) in the down-river reach of the weir than in the up-river reach. Also, fish density along the vertical water column was highest at mid-depths of Seungchon weir, which has simple habitat substrates, while fish density was highest at hypolimnetic depth of Juksan weir. According to fish sampling by the $C_s$ methodology, the fish compositions decreased as the river goes upward, and significant differences(JSW, t = 0.248, n = 30, p < 0.05) in the compositions of fish species occurred between up-reach and down-reach of the weirs. The dominant species near the two weirs were Opsarichthys uncirostris amurensis, Hemiculter eigenmanni and Coilia nasus. Overall, our fish and habitat data, based on $E_s$ and $C_s$ monitoring methodologies, suggest that the weirs disturbed the rivers due to initial habitat disturbances by the weir constructions as well as the barrier roles of weirs on fish passage and migrations. More long-term scientific and systematic fish impact monitoring and assessments($E_s$ and $C_s$) are required in the future to predict changes of ecological structures and functions on the constructions of the weirs.
The spatial distribution characteristic of fish community were investigated at the 10 habitat types in the Nonsan stream from August, 2008 to June, 2009. The collected species during the surveyed period were 26 species belong to 6 families. Korean endemic species were Sarcocheilichthys nigripinnis morii, Squalidus japonicus coreanus, Hemiculter eigenmanni, Pseudobagrus koreanus, and Odontobutis interrupta which showed 19.2% ratio of total species. Dominant species was Zacco platypus, and subdominant species was Tridentiger brevispinis. Dominant species according to habitat types were Micropterus salmoides(substrate type pool and rock type pool), Lepomis macrochirus(channel connected pool and channel unconnected pool/abandoned type pool), T. brevispinis(channel unconnected pool/overflow type and run) and Z. platypus(riffle, meander type pool, side channel, and dam type pool). As a results of community analysis in side channel, diversity index showed relatively high values, indicating that habitat types in the Nonsan stream have relatively stable community structure. Bray-curtis cluster analysis indicated that the meander type pool and riffle showed the most similar values(80.8%). Moreover, cluster and principal component analysis were classified as 2 groups(lotic and lentic habitats).
The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term habitat morphological alteration resulting from a large dam and weirs in the Tamjin River. To achieve this, we carried out a hydrograph analysis and a substrate size distribution analysis. We also estimated the channel width, bar area and vegetation encroachment using aerial photographs taken before and after the construction of the dam and weirs. The result of the hydrological analysis showed that flooding downstream was greatly reduced with small peaks occurrence after the dam construction. Interestingly, normal hydrographs in the main channel appeared just after tributary conjunction. There was a similar pattern in the substrate size analysis. Despite coarsened substrate just downstream of the dam site, more sand appeared again after introduction of the tributary. However, there was an increase in the bar area downstream of the dam's channels with most bars covered with vegetation. The channel width increased at the upper area of weirs through impoundment, but decreased downstream because of vegetation encroachment. This study indicate that unregulated tributary plays an important role in restoring hydro-physical habitat conditions in mainstream channels below a large dam. However, numerous weirs could be a causal factor to accelerate habitat deterioration in the dam downstream channels.
This study was conducted from 2017 to 2018 to determine habitat aspects of Acheilognathus signifier, an endangered species reintroduced (2010~2012) to Heukcheon Stream, a tributary of the Hangang River, Korea. A total of 329 individuals were collected in 2017 (two surveys) and 723 individuals were collected in 2018 (four surveys) at about 5 km habitat area, including the discharge station. A. signifier's habitat was about 0.4 to 1.2 meters deep in slow water flow upstream of the discharge area. It was a place with many boulders and cobbles. The spawning period was estimated from April to June in terms of spawning behavior and collected juvenile size. Sex ratio of females (438) and males (412) was 1 : 0.94. Estimated age of A. signifier based on their total length distribution during the spawning period (April) indicated that 1-, 2-, 3-year old groups and more than 4-year-old group were 32~43 mm, 50~61 mm, 62~75 mm, and 76~89 mm, respectively. Age-specific composition costs differed depending on the timing of the collection. They were relatively high in the order of first-year (juvenile)>third-year> and fourth-year or higher, showing a stable age structure. Thus, A. signifier reintroduced to Heukcheon Stream has successfully settled down and formed a stable population, showing a tendency to proliferate.
In the present study, the preliminary results of a large-scale seismic response analysis of a super-high-rise steel frame considering soil-structure interaction are presented. A seismic response analysis under the excitation of the JR Takatori record of the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake is conducted. Precise meshes of a 31-story super-high-rise steel frame and a soil region, which are constructed completely of hexahedral elements, are generated and combined. The parallel large-scale simulation is performed using K computer, which is one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. The results are visualized using an offline rendering code implemented on K computer, and the feasibility of using a very fine mesh of solid elements is investigated. The computation performance of the analysis code on K computer is also presented.
The "China Zun" tower in Beijing will rise to 528 meters in height and will be the tallest building in Beijing once built. Inspired by an ancient Chinese vessel, the "Zun", the plan dimensions reduce gradually from the bottom of the tower to the waist and then expand again as it rises to form an aesthetically beautiful and unique geometry. To satisfy the structural requirement for seismic and wind resistance, the structure is a dual system composed of a perimeter mega structure made of composite mega columns, mega braces, and belt trusses, and a reinforced-concrete core with steel plate-embedded walls. Advanced parametric design technology is applied to find the most efficient outer-perimeter structure system. The seismic design basically follows a mixed empirical and performance-based methodology that was verified by a shaking table test and other specimen lab tests. The tower is now half-way through its construction.
The purposes of this study were to clarify of floristic composition and the landscape structure on the habitats of each Ranunculus plant, which were distributed in Daejeon, Korea. Three taxa were distributed and investigated in this study. Floristic composition of habitats were organized by living in flatten open space needed a lot of sunlight and humidity species. Landscape ecological structure of habitats were defined by soils of coarse loamy and loamy skeletal, slope of under 15$^{\circ}$, under the (five percent of woody coverage at 100-300m above the sea levels. Distribution patterns of Ranunculus plants in Daejeon were presented on the 1km X 1km grid map.
The story shear force distributions of most seismic design codes generally reflect the influences of higher vibration modes based on the elastic deformations of structures. However, as the seismic design allows for the plastic behavior of a structure, the story shear force distribution shall be effective after it is yielded due to earthquake excitation. Hence this study conducted numerical analyses on the story shear force distributions of most seismic design codes to find out the characteristics of how a structure is damaged between stories. Analysis results show that the more forces are distributed onto high stories, the lower its concentration is and the more energy is absorbed. From the results, this study proposes the optimum story shear force distribution and its calculation formula that make the damages uniformly distributed onto whole stories. Consequently, the story damage distribution from the optimum calculation formula was considerably more stable than existing seismic design codes.
Four new species, Semitaspongia jejuensis, Scalarispongia regularis, S. nigra and Dysidea violata are described from Jejudo, Korea. They were collected from 15 m depth by SCUBA diving and from intertidal area by hand. Semitaspongia jejuensis n. sp. is easily distinguished from other Semitaspongia species in growth form, conules, colour, skeletal structure, diameter of fibre and habitat. Scalarispongia regularis n. sp. is very close to S. scalaris (Schmidt, 1862) in skeletal structure, but S. scalaris has longer conules, larger meshes, longer distance between primary fibres, and highly developed subdermal canal system. Scalarispongia nigra n. sp. is very close to S. regularis in skeletal structure but can be easily distinguished by its black colour of external surface and growth form. Dysidea violata n. sp. is similar with D. ethria (Laubenfels, 1936) in sponge appearance, but D. etheria is clearly defined by its blue colour and thickness of fibre.
