  • The purposes of the study were to analyze the seasonal effects on the fish fauna and compositions including trophic guilds and tolerance guilds. For the study, we collected fish samples twice in June as premonsoon period and early September 2007 as monsoon periods in five sampling sites of the Gap Stream, and then biological oxygen demand (BOD), nutrients (TN, TP) and suspended solids (SS) were compared with the guild data along the gradient of upstream-to-downstream. Chemical water quality, based on BOD, TP, and TN degraded gradually from the upstream to downstream reach and there were about 3 fold difference between S1 and S5. Water quality was worse in the premonsoon than the monsoon, and the heavy monsoon resulted in a dilution of the polluted river by rain water, especially, in the downstream reach. Total number of fish species, based on the catch per unit effort (CPUE), showed a distinct difference between the two seasons; 30 species were sampled in premonsoon, but 23 species were sampled in the monsoon, indicating a seasonal difference in the fish fauna. Tolerant species dominated the fish community (48.3%) in the stream, and the proportions prior to physical disturbance by the monsoon rain were evidently greater in the downstream reach than the upstream. This reflected the characteristics of urban stream polluted by nutrient enrichment as shown in the BOD and TP values. Sensitive species in the premonsoon decreased from the gradient of upstream-to-downstream reach. Such seasonal modifications in the trophic and tolerance guilds were evident. In the analysis of trophic guild and habitat guild, during the premonsoon the proportion of insectivore and riffle-benthic species were largely greater in the upstream reach than the downstream, whereas the proportions were opposite along the gradient of the stream in monsoon. Thus, the patterns of chemical water quality along the longitudinal gradients reflected the premonsoon conditions of insectivores and tolerant species, indicating that summer monsoon data of fish may not match with water quality due to large physical disturbance by flow regime. Seasonal monsoon in this region as well as the chemical pollution may act as a key role influencing the fish compositions of trophic and tolerance guilds and fauna. The data collected during the premonsoon rather than the monsoon, thus, may be better predictor for a diagnosis of stream health conditions.

  • The species composition of the fish community was studied in four streams where fish kills have previously occurred in recent years; Worun Stream, Seo Stream, Jangnam Stream, and the Anyang Stream. The number of fish species varied from 22 to 86% compared to the number of fish species pre-fish kill. The recovery of fish populations in the streams seems to be determined by water quality and the presence of artificial structures in the streams. The Jangnam Stream, where alkaline pH caused a fish kill, showed a high recovery of fish species due to improvements in water quality. Anyang Stream had a low number of species, possibly because dissolved oxygen concentrations were intermittently low. Artificial structures in streams had a negative impact the recovery of fish species, particularly for benthic fish species. It appears that fish populations can recover rapidly when water quality improves or the movement of fish community is unimpeded. However, water quality and artificial structures in many streams in Korea still present adverse conditions for fish survival, deterring the recovery of fish populations. To conserve fish populations in streams, habitat all owing unimpeded movement for fish and controls on pollutant inputs are needed.

  • Flesh gingers harvested domestically in Seosan and Wanju area and imported from China were used to investigate their regional quality characteristics related to morphological properties-weight, maximum length, thickness, no. of branches, whole volume, hardness and surface color. Weights of ginger were mostly distributed in the range of $50{\sim}100\;g$; 47.6% of Seosan, 67.4% of Wanju and 45.7% of China gingers were in this range. Length and thickness of each gingers were increased with weight increment. The length of Seosan gingers was uniformly distributed overall, and the thickness of domestic products tends to be thinner than China ones. Branch number of domestic gingers was more widely distributed than China ones which had higher values than domestic's in volume. Domestic gingers were relatively harder than china ones, especially Seosan products was hardest among them. The surface color of China gingers was little more brighter than domestic's while domestic gingers were more yellowish. Statistical analyses showed a high correlation among physical properties except surface color and a functional relation between variables.

  • This study was to compare soil characteristics among Quercus mongolica communities that characterize the boreal-temperate deciduous forest in Korea. The classification of Quercus mongolica community and soil sampling were carried in Mt. Odae and Mt. Jungwang in Kangwondo from April of 1991 to October of 1994. The study area was classified as 5 Quercus mongolica communities with Braun-Blanquet method as follows; Quercus mongolica - Abies nephrolepis, Quercus mongolica - Acer pseudosieboldianum, Quercus mongolica - Lindera obtusiloba, Quercus mongolica - Acer mandshuricum, and Quercus mongolica - Carpinus cordata communities. Quercus mongolica - Abies nephorolepis community had the most shallow depth of A horizon(5cm) among communities, and root penetration was mainly from 0 to 10cm soil depth, and they had a dry soil moisture condition. Depth of A horizon of Quercus mongolica - Lindera obtusiloba and Quercus mongolica - Acer mandshuricum communities was about 20cm, and root penetration was mainly from 0 to 20cm soil depth, and they had a slightly dry soil moisture condition. Quercus mongolica - Acer mandshuricum, and Quercus mongolica -Carpinus cordata communities had the deepest depth of A horizon(35cm) and root was well developed over 45cm, and they had a moderately-slight dry soil condition. The soil organic matter, total N, exchangeable Ca, Mg and K concentration and CEC was the greatest in Quercus mongolica-Acer mandshuricum community and Quercus mongolica-Carpinus cordata community among communities. Quercus mongolica - Abies nephyolepis community had the smallest soil organic matter, total N, and CEC among communities. There were large differences among Quercus mongolica communities by soil properties and the result may be due to different habitat positions in the landscape among communities.

  • We studied the spatio-temporal microalgal (phytoplankton and benthic diatoms) and environmental changes of the Hajeonri intertidal zone from February to November 2014. Seawater and phytoplankton analysis were conducted all through the months. The species, composition and abundance of phytoplankton and environmental factors were measured. As a result, diatom was dominant among a total of 113 species identified. On a seasonal basis (Feb. May, Aug., Nov.), we carried out studies on benthic diatoms on the surface of the sediments and their habitats at nine stations on the transect line at Hajeonri at low tide. The grain of the surface sediments was mainly composed of sandy silt and sandy mud. Organic pollution level was low. Benthic microalgal biomass (chlorophyll ${\alpha}$) was high in the spring and summer. A total of 163 benthic diatom species were identified. Navicula sp.1 and Paralia sulcata were dominant over the study period. Five diatom species were observed both in water column and on surface sediment at the same time.

  • In this study, fish fauna and stream characteristics were surveyed from June to October of 2014 in 31 sites of 23 small streams of Namhae Island. During the study period, 38 species belonging to 30 genera under 13 families were collected. Cyprinidae and Gobiidae fish occupied 28.9% (11 species) and Cobitidae fish accounted for 10.5% (4 species). The dominant family was Cyprinidae, and the most dominant species was Zacco koreanus with 30.3% (1,089 individuals) of the total. Eight species (33.8%) such as Zacco koreanus, Squalidus gracilis majimae, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Pseudobagrus koreanus, Iksookimia hugowolfeld, Iksookimia longicorpa, Silurus microdorsalis and Liobagrus mediadiposalis were Korean endemic and one species of Micropterus salmoides was exotic. According to the analysis of the community based on the diversity, evenness and richness indices, fish community seems to be more stable in the S7. The small streams were classified into three types of steep mountainous, mountainous-flatland, and flat land streams, and their types were categorized by their features of stream width, water depth, bottom substrate, riparian vegetation, and land use patterns. Principal component analysis based on species abundance classified fish communities into three main groups according to human impact and land-use pattern change. These results suggest that fish community structures were primary affected by the longitudinal environmental changes and these were modified by the habitat condition in accordance with the land use pattern change in the small streams.

  • The Chinese Sparrowhawk($Accipiter$ $soloensis$) is the most common breeding raptor in Korea, but its spatial use in the breeding season has been poorly documented. Therefore, to estimate the territory and home range sizes of breeding sparrowhawks, six territorial males(four in 2005 and two in 2006) were observed from June to July in Gyeonggi Province, the Republic of Korea. Main perches, which were used repeatedly(more than three times) or where apparent territorial behaviors were observed, were identified and the locations were analyzed by GIS software. According to the 100% Minimum Convex Polygons which were identified from $25.2{\pm}5.3$ perches, Chinese Sparrowhawks occupied $4.62{\pm}0.90$ ha for breeding territories and used $22.57{\pm}5.12$ ha for their home ranges. These estimates showed larger spatially occupied areas than those in one previous report, but this study suggests that Chinese Sparrowhawks intensively use small areas throughout the breeding season. This result also implies that the sparrowhawks have the potential to be significantly affected by any habitat changes and resource exploitation in the small areas(particularly in small rice paddies of 0.6-2.0 ha) which they largely rely on for food. Although this study was based on observations solely for territory size estimations, this study may be worthwhile as preliminary pilot research for Chinese Sparrowhawk conservation, management, and further studies.

  • Behavior of adult females of the smoky brown cockroach was observed for 10-15 days continuously by using computer and the automatic sensoring system. Under the light condition of l2L~ 12D, individual variations were generally higher and the periodicity appeared less in terms of the presence time at the micro-habitats and the locomotory activity. The smoky brown cockroach appeared 20.42, 11.50, 6.31 and 2.66 % in a day in averages respectively at the shelter and the places for other individuals, feeding and drinking. It stayed 20.29 % in a day at the shelter when food, water, and other individuals were not supplied. Visiting rates were higher at the feeding and dnnking places than at. the ot.her micro-habitats. The degree of t.he locomotory activity was relatively lower when food, water, and other individuals were not supplied t.han when they were supplied. The Pnncipal Component Analysis (PCA) on the presence at the micro-habitats showed that. t.he presence pattern for each mdividual appeared differently (Q mode) while the differem time zones were grouped to the photophase and scotophase (R mode). When food, water, and other individuals were supplied the degree of grouping was higher at the shelter than at the places for feeding and drinking. When the act.ivityand the presence time at the different micro-habitats were jointly analyzed by PCA, the achvity of the female smoky brown cockroach appeared in relation with the presence time ( %) at the places for feeding and other individuals.

  • A combined field release of indigenous larvivoroug fish (Aplocheilus latipes) and hybrid herbivore (Tilapia mossambicus miloticus) was conducted to determine the effectiveness of biological control, in particular, against malaria vector (anopheles sinensis), breeding in weedy habitat of rice fields at the University rice paddies at Suwon during the period of June through September in 1988. A combined fish introduction at the release rate of 2.0 fish per $M^{2}$ for Aplocheilus and 1-pair $10M^{2}$ water surface for Tilapia resuited in 70.8% Anopheles larval reducton in a week period, the rates of rontrol increased to 73. 5% and 80.2% in 4th and 5th week respectively after the fish introdurtion, maintaining mosquito suppression in range of 80~82% control after the 5th week against Anopheles and Culex spp. combined. In a single fish treatment with Aplocheilus at 2.0 $fish/M^{2}$ release rate, Anopheles larval reduction ranged on the average 51.4~56.5%in 4 wrek period which was later integratpd with B.t.i. (Rl53.78) treatment at 1.0 kg/ha dosage rate to suppress vector mosquito population down and the the results was compared with that of combined fish introdurtion.
