The sorption of europium (Eu (III)) onto kaolinite and the influence of humic acids over a range of pH 3 ~ 11 has been studied by batch adsorption experiment (V/m = 250 : 1 mL/g, $C_{Eu(III)}\;=\;1\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;mol/L$, $C_{HA}\;=\;5{\sim}50\;mg/L$, $P_{CO2}=10^{-3.5}\;atm$). The concentrations of HA and Eu(III) in aqueous phase were measured by UV absorbance at 254nm (e.g., $UV_{254}$) and ICP-MS after microwave digestion for HA removals, respectively. Results showed that the HA sorption onto kaolinite was decreased with increasing pH and their sorption isotherms fit well with the Langmuir adsorption model (except pH 3). Maximum amount ($q_{max}$) for the HA sorption at pH 4 to 11 was ranged from 4.73 to 0.47 mg/g. Europium adsorption onto the kaolinite in the absence of HA was typical, showing an increases with pH and a distinct adsorption edge at pH 3 to 5. However in the presence of HA, Eu adsorption to kaolinite was significantly affected. HA was shown to enhance Eu adsorption in the acidic pH range (pH 3 ~ 4) due to the formation of additional binding sites for Eu coming from HA adsorbed onto kaolinite surface, but reduce Eu adsorption in the intermediate and high pH above 6 due to the formation of aqueous Eu-HA complexes. The results on the ternary interaction of kaolinte-Eu-HA are compared with those on the binary system of kaolinite-HA and kaolinite-Eu and adsorption mechanism with pH was discussed.

Aerosol Deposition (AD) is anovel way to fabricate bioactive ceramic coatings in biomedical implants and prostheses applications. In the present work, silicon-substituted hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings on commercially pure titanium were prepared by aerosol deposition using Si-HA powders. The incorporation of silicon in the HA lattice is known to improve the bioactivity of the HA, makingsilicon-substitute HA an attractive alternative to pure HA in biomedical applications. Si-HA powders with the chemical formula $Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6-x(SiO_4)x(OH)_2-x$, having silicon contents up to x=0.5 (1.4 wt%), were synthesized by solid-state reaction of $Ca_2P_2O_7$, $CaCO_3$, and $SiO_2$. The Si-HA powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR). The corresponding coatings were also analyzed by XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA). The results revealed that a single-phase Si-HA was obtained without any secondary phases such as $\alpha$- or $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) for both the powders and the coatings. The Si-HA coating was about $5\;{\mu}m$ thick, had a densemicrostructure with no cracks or pores. In addition, the proliferation and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblast cells grown on the Si-HA coatings were significantly higher than those on the bare Ti and pure HA coating. These results revealed the stimulatory effects induced by siliconsubstitution on the cellular response to the HA coating.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the asthma-suppressive and immuno-regulatory effect of Lepidii Semen Herbal-acupu ncture(LS-HA) at $Joksanmi(ST_{36})$ on ovalbumin(OVA)-induced asthma in mice. Methods : C57BL/6 mice out of all the experimental groups, except the Normal group and the LS-HA group, were sensitized and challenged with OVA. The mice in the LS-HA group and the OVA-LS-HA group were treated with LS-HA(1%) at $Joksanmi(ST_{36})$. The mice in the OVA-Saline group were injected with saline at $Joksanmi(ST_{36})$. The mice in the OVA-Needle-Prick group were treated with a single prick with an injection needle at $Joksanmi(ST_{36})$. LS-HA, saline injection and needle prick were administered for 8 weeks, three times a week. Results : The lung weight and total cells in lung of the OVA-LS-HA group decreased significantly compared with those of the OVA-Control group. Total leukocytes and eosinophils in BALF of the OVA-LS-HA group decreased significantly compared with those of the OVA-Control group. The collagen accumulation in the lung sections of the OVA-LS-HA group decreased significantly compared with that of the OVA-control group. The concentrations of IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IgE in BALF and serum of the OVA-LS-HA group decreased significantly compared with those of the OVA-Control group. The numbers of $Gr-1^+/CD11b^+$, $CCR3^+$, $CD3e^+$, $CD19^+$, $CD3e^+/CD69^+$cells in the OVA-LS-HA group decreased significantly compared with those of the OVA-Control group. The mRNA expressions of $TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-5, IL-4 and IL-13 in lung of the OVA-LS-HA group decreased significantly compared with those of the OVA-Control group. Conclusions: These results suggest that LS-HA at $Joksamni(ST_{36})$ is considered to be effective in treating asthma and to be put to practical use in the future asthma clinic.

This trial was carried out to find out the optimum ridge and seeding rate for the seed production of Festuca arundinacea S. (variety Alta). It was composed of three ridge level (12, 18 and 24cm) and four seeding rates (10, 15, 20 and 25kg/ha) in a split-plot design with 4 replications. The experiment lasted from September 1979 to October 1981. 1. The beginning of heading state was May 12 and the date of full flowering stage was June 2. The optimum stage for the seed harvesting of Festuca arundinacea was about 43 days after beginning of heading stage. 2. The number of panicles were 157 per square meter from the best treatment 18cm ridge with 15kg seed/ha. And the 1000 grain weight was 2.79g for the treatment 12cm ridge with 10kg seed/ha. 3. The average seed yield for two years was 681kg/ha and the largest 831kg/ha for the treatment 18cm ridge with 25kg seed/ha. 4. the average germination rate of the harvested seed was 90.7 percent, and it showed a little higher germination rate from the lower level of seeding rate. 5. The average total DM production with two cuttings of aftermath was about 6715kg/ha. According to the increasing seeding rate and narrowing the ridge, DM yield was higher.
Environmental agents, including viral and bacterial infectious agents, are involved in the alteration of physicochemical and biological parameters in the nasal epithelium. Hyaluronan (HA) has an important role in the regulation of tissue healing properties. High molecular weight HA (HMW-HA) shows greater anti-inflammatory responses than medium molecular weight HA (MMW-HA) and low molecular weight HA (LMW-HA). We investigated the effect of HMW-HA, MMW-HA and LMW-HA on the regulation of physicochemical and biological parameters in an "in vitro" model that might mimic viral infections of the nasal epithelium. Human nasal epithelial cell line RPMI2650 was stimulated with double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) Poly(I:C) for 5 days in air-liquid-interface (ALI) culture (3D model of airway tissue). dsRNA Poly(I:C) treatment significantly decreased transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) in the stratified nasal epithelium of RPMI2650 and increased pH values, rheological parameters (elastic G' and viscous G''), and Muc5AC and Muc5B production in the apical wash of ALI culture of RPMI2650 in comparison to untreated cells. RPMI2650 treated with dsRNA Poly(I:C) in the presence of HMW-HA showed lower pH values, Muc5AC and Muc5B production, and rheological parameters, as well as increased TEER values in ALI culture, compared to cells treated with Poly(I:C) alone or pretreated with LMW-HA and MMW-HA. Our 3D "in vitro" model of epithelium suggests that HMW-HA might be a coadjuvant in the pharmacological treatment of viral infections, allowing for the control of some physicochemical and biological properties affecting the epithelial barrier of the nose during infection.
To determine the optimum $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ rate for dry matter production of Achyranthes japonica Nakai a medicinal plant, in Jeju island, plants were grown in 2001 under ten fertilizer treatments comprising of two N (90, and 180kg/ha) and five $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ (0, 100, 200, 300, and 400 kg/ha) levels. Plant height leaf length and width, stem diameter, and main root length and diameter were not significantly affected by $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ rate while $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ fertilization of 100 kg/ha increased the number of branches, spikes, and roots per hill by 18,38 and 43%, respectively, compared with the unfertilized $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ treatment and decreased with further increases in $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ rate. The number of roots per hill was greatest with the application of 200kg $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$. The highest utricle dry matter yield (2.92 t/ha) was obtained with the application of 100kg $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$. However, as $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ rate increased from 0 to 100 and 200kg/ha, root dry matter yield increased from 2.36 to 3.55, and 3.80 t/ha, and then decreased to 3.14, and 2.86 t/ha at 300, and 400kg $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ rates, respectively. As $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ rate increased from 100 to 400 kg/ha, $\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$ recovery in aboveground parts decreased from 34.1 to 7.1%.
Organic carbon distribution and carbon budget of a Quercus variabilis forest in the Youngha valley of Mt. Worak National Park were investigated. Carbon in above and below ground standing biomass, litter layer, and soil organic carbon were measured from 2005 through 2006. For the estimation of carbon budget, soil respiration was measured. The amount of carbon allocated to above- and below-ground biomass was 56.22 and 13.90 ton C ha$^{-1}$. Amount of organic carbon in annual litterfall was 2.33 ton C ha$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$. Amount of soil organic carbon within 50 cm soil depth was 119.14 ton C ha$^{-1}$ 50 cm-depth$^{-1}$. Total amount of organic carbon in this Q. variabilis forest was 193.96 ton C ha$^{-1}$. Of these, 61.43% of organic carbon was allocated in the soil. Net increase of organic carbon in above- and below-ground biomass in this Q. variabilis forest was estimated to 7.68 ton C ha$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$. The amount of carbon evolved through soil respiration was 6.21 ton C ha$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$. Net amount of 1.47 ton C ha$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ was absorbed from the atmosphere by this Q. variabilis forest.
Trichloroethylene(TCE) is the organic compound which is used variously at the industrial areas. It contaminates soils and groundwater by leaked storage tank, careless treatment in field and the effluent from waste landfills. This study was carried out to identify adsorptive behavior of TCE by soil. Batch experiments were conducted at different soil-organic matter content and lime treatment to determine Freundlich isothermal adsorption equation constant, k and n, for TCE. Sewage sludge cake was applied to make different soil-organic matter content with the level of Oton/ha(S1), 50ton/ha(S2), 100ton/ha(S3). Lime(calcium hydroxide) was treated with the level of 2ton/ha, 4ton/ha, 6ton/ha, 10ton/ha. Freundlich isothermal adsorption equations obtained from experiment with sewage sludge cake were as follows (on condition that the level of TCE applied to soil ranged from 0.5ng/g soil to 2.5 ng/g soil.) : S1 :x/m = 0.393 $C^2$, S2 : x/m = 0.436 $C^2$, S3 : x/m = 0.636 $C^2$Value of k was increased in higher order of 51, 52, 53 with increased level of sewage sludge cake application. From this results, soil which was applied higher level of sewage sludge cake had a good ability on TCE adsorption. With increased the level of lime application, pH of the soil was increased and the ability of the soil in TCE adsorption was decreased.

Rye(Secale cereale L.) shows lower dry matter yield and nutrient content when it was harvested before wintering. This study was conducted to investigate how effect forage rape(Brassicu napus Subsp oleifera), which carries early maturity and can be harvested before wintering, on the increase of the forage yield and nutrient content when rye was sown mixed with the rape. Optimum sowing rate of the rye/rape mixture was also pursued in this study. The five treatment of rye single, rape single, ryel20+rape 1Okg/ha, rye84+rape 7kg/ha and rye60+rape 5kg/ha were sown on 2 September 1989. Rape single plot was cut one time(l9 November 1989) and the other plots were cuted two times(19 November 1989 and 20 May 1990). In botanical composition of the mixtures, rape recorded dominant ratio with 64~69% at the autumn cut. The rye84+rape 7kg/ha mixture plot marked the highest dry matter yield with 4.46t/ha among all the experimental plot at the autumn cut(P<0.05). In year total yield of dry matter(t/ha), rye single, rape single, rye120+rape IOkg/ha, rye84+rape 7kg/ha and rye60+rape 5kg/ha marked 13.6, 4.1, 12.7, 12.9 and 11.8, respectively. In crude protein content, the rye single plot was 17.2% at the autumn cut on the other hand the mixture plots showed increasing tendency with 18.0~19.9%. In crude fiber content, the mixture plots were remarkably lower than rye single plot. In year total yield of crude protein, rye84+rape 7kg/ha mixture plot showed the highest yield with 1.6lt/ha among all the experimental plots. Ratio of crude protein yield to crude fiber yield, rye84+rape 7kg/ha tended to be higher than the other mixture plots. It is confirmed that the rye/rape mixture can produce more forage than the rye single cropping when they are harvested in late autumn, besides the mixture forage contains higher crude protein than that rye single forage. It can be said that the rydrape mixture is more useful than the rye single cropping, and optimum sowing rate of the mixture is 84kg/ha of rye+7kg/ha of rape.
