Reduction of DC-Link Capacitance in Single-Phase Non-Isolated Onboard Battery Chargers

  • This paper proposes a single-phase non-isolated onboard battery charger (OBC) for electric vehicles (EVs) that only uses small film capacitors at the DC-link of the AC-DC converter. In the proposed charger, an isolated DC-DC converter for low-voltage batteries is used as an active power decoupling (APD) circuit to absorb the ripple power when a high-voltage (HV) battery is charged. As a result, the DC-link capacitance in the AC-DC converter of the HV charging circuit can be significantly reduced without requiring any additional devices. In addition, some of the components of the proposed circuit are shared in common for the different operating modes among the AC-DC converter, LV charging circuit and active power filter. Therefore, the cost and volume of the onboard battery charger can be reduced. The effectiveness of the proposed topology has been verified by the simulation and experimental results.

Fatigue Limit According to Microcracks in 0.57 wt.% Carbon Steel with Different HV (HV가 다른 0.57 wt.% 탄소강의 미소 균열에 따르는 피로 한도)

  • This study evaluated the fatigue limit depending on microcracks using 0.57 wt.% carbon steel with different Vickers hardness. The fatigue limit was almost constant up to a certain limit regardless of the carbon content. However, the fatigue limit decreased rapidly as the size of the crack increased. As the crack aspect ratio was smaller, the fatigue limit of the depth (point A) a lot decreased. The fatigue limit ratio of the depth decreased significantly because the crack propagation in the depth direction was fast as the crack aspect ratio became smaller. On the other hand, the fatigue limit ratio of surface cracks increased as the crack aspect ratio decreased.

A Study on the Remanufacturing for Drive Spur Gear in Planner Miller by Directed Energy Deposition

  • In this study, additive manufacturing technology was applied to restore a planner miller that was unusable due to aging. The drive spur gear of the planner miller was inoperable due to many defects in the teeth. The shape of the defective gear teeth was restored by deposition of the defective teeth using the DED method. However, as the location of the deposition head and the location of the set origin became farther, the deposition shape was different from the modeling shape. Nonetheless, since the modeling of the deposition part was designed to be larger than the tooth shape of the original gear, it was possible to completely restore all gear teeth through post-processing. The arrangement interval of the flow lines of the deposition part was narrower than that of the substrate. The hardness of the substrate was 172 HV, and that of the deposition part was 345 HV, which was twice as high as that of the substrate.

  • In order to improve wear and fatigue resistance of the structural materials, especially cold work roller for 304 stainless steel, an eco-super-finishing and surface hardening treatment using ultrasonic vibration energy was developed and applied to the SKD-ll roller. The eco-super-finishing machine was designed and fabricated by DesignMecha Co, by its own technology. It was observed that the surface roughness, hardness and residual stress were changed from $Ra{\;}={\;}O.25\mu\textrm{m}$, Hv=710 and ${\sigma}$={\;}+400{\;}MPa{\;}to{\;}Ra{\;}={\;}0.165\mu\textrm{m}$, Hv = 1200 and ${\sigma}=-610$ MPa after 20 KHz micro-cold forging, which means almost equal to the 300 % improvement of life-time.

Potential Use of Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar to Monitor Agricultural Land Uses: A Case Study in Thailand

  • In 1996, Thailand's participation in the Pacific Rim as a part of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth (MTPE) Program, was titled 'AIRSAR Thailand Project'. In this project the Department of Land Development utilized Topographic SAR (TOPSAR) which had multi-frequencies: C band, L band, and P band with multi-polarization: HH, VV, and HV as well as C band VV DEM. Satellite data such as LANDSAT TM was also utilized for optimal use. Results of AIRSAR image processing including data fusion among difference wavelength bands and polarization revealed the quality of AIRSAR that best suit for detection of agricultural land uses. The HH-L band AIRSAR was proven to be useful to distinguish among crop types when combined with appropriate data. The HH, VV, and HV-P band enhanced surface characteristics of swamp forest and wetland. In addition, TOPSAR has its great advantage for identification of salt farms and shrimp ponds.

음극 아크 증착으로 코팅된 TiAlN 박막의 특성연구

  • 본 연구에서는 아크 소스를 이용하여 TiAlN을 코팅하였으며 공정 변수 중 질소 유량에 다른 TiAlN 박막의 물성 변화를 관찰하였다. TiAlN은 고경도 난삭재의 고능률 절삭 분야에 사용되어 공구의 수명을 향상하기 위한 표면처리 소재로 각광을 받고 있다. TiAlN 박막은 아크 소스에 장착된 TiAlN 타겟(Ti-50 at %Al)을 사용하여 스테인리스 강판 위에 코팅 하였으며 이 때 기판과 타겟 간의 거리는 약 30 cm이었다. 기판을 진공용기에 장착하고 ${\sim}10^{-6}$ torr까지 진공배기를 실시한 후 아르곤 가스를 진공용기 내로 공급하여 공정 압력인 $7{\times}10^{-4}$ torr로 제어한다. 공정 압력에서 아크 소스에 약 70 A의 전류를 인가하여 아크를 발생시키고 기판 홀더에 약 -400 V의 직류전압을 인가하여 약 5분간 청정을 실시하였다. 기판의 청정이 끝나면 기판에 인가된 전압을 차단하고 질소 가스를 진공용기에 공급하여 TiAlN을 코팅하였다. 질소 유량이 30 sccm일 경우 TiAlN 박막의 경도가 약 2510 Hv로 가장 높았으며, 질소의 유량이 40 sccm 이상으로 증가할 경우 TiAlN 박막의 경도는 1500 Hv로 주목할 만한 변화는 없었다. 질소 유량이 증가하면 TiAlN 박막의 색상은 회색에서 어두운 보라색으로 변화하였고 주사전자현미경 분석을 통해서 거대 입자(macro particle)가 감소하는 경향을 확인할 수 있었으며 이는 질소 유량이 증가할수록 TiAlN 박막의 표면조도 또한 증가하는 분석결과와 일치하였다. X-선 회절 분석을 통해 질소 유량이 30 sccm 이상에서 박막의 질화가 일어나고 2500 Hv 이상의 경도를 가지는 최적 조건임을 확인하였으며, 이는 절삭 공구 등과 같이 고경도 유지를 위한 코팅 분야에 적용이 가능할 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구에서 얻어진 결과를 바탕으로 질소 유량 외에 다른 공정 조건을 변화시켜 TiAlN 코팅을 실시한다면 다양한 색상 구현, 고경도, 내마모성 등 TiAlN 박막의 기능성을 향상할 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.

A Study on the Properties in Friction Weldability of Dissimilar Aluminum Alloys A2024-T6/ A6061-T6 (A2024-T6/ A6061-T6의 마찰용접 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study deals with the friction welding of A2024- T6 to A6061- T6; The friction time was variable conditions under the conditions of spindle revolution of 2000rpm, friction pressure of 50MPa, upset pressure of 100MPa, and upset time of 5.0seconds. Under these conditions, the microstructure of weld interface, tensile fracture surface and mechanical tests were studied, of friction weld, and so the results were as follows. 1. When the friction time was 1.5seconds under the conditions, the maximum tensile strength of the friction weld happened to be 292MPa, which is $94.2\%$ of the base material's tensile strength(310MPa). At the same condition, the maximum shear strength was 2l2MPa, which is equivalent to $103\%$ of the base material's shear strength (205MPa). 2. At the same condition, the maximum vickers hardness was Hv 146 at A2024- T6 nearby weld interface, which is higher Hv3 than condition of the friction time 0.5seconds, and the maximum vickers hardness was Hvl20 from weld interface of A6061-T6, which is higher Hv28 then base material's. 3. The results of microstructure analysis show that the structures of two base materials have fractionized and rearranged along a column due to heating and axial force during friction, which has affected in raising hardness and tensile strength.

High Temperature Gas Nitriding of Austenitic Stainless Steels (오스테나이트계 스테인리스강의 고온질화)

  • This study examined the phase changes, nitride precipitation and variation in mechanical properties of STS 304, STS 321 and STS 316L austenitic stainless steels after high temperature gas nitriding (HTGN) at temperature ranges from $1050^{\circ}C\;to\;1150^{\circ}C$. Fine round type of $Cr_2N$ nitrides were observed in the surface layers of 304 and 316L steels, even more in STS 321. Additionally, square type of TiN was found in STS 321 austenitic matrix too. As a result of many precipitates in the surface layer of the STS 321, it was seen $370{\sim}470Hv$ hardness variation depending on the HTGN treatment conditions, and interior region of austenite represented 150Hv. The surface hardness value of STS 304 and STS 316L showed $255{\sim}320Hv$, respectively. The nitrogen content was shown 0.27, 1.7 and 0.4% respectively at the surface layers of the STS 304, STS 321 and STS 316L. After the HTGN it was shown the improvement of corrosion resistance of the STS 321 and STS 316L compared with solution annealed steels in the solution of 1N $H_2SO_4$ whereas the STS 304 was not.

Pressure fluctuations of the hot cathode ionization gauges at the stainless steel high vacuum chamber according to room temperature variations (스테인레스 스틸 고진공용기에 부착된 열음극 전리진공게이지의 주변 온도변화에 따른 압력요동)

  • Three hot cathode ionization gauges (HCIG) were used to study their responses of pressure measurements at the stainless steel high vacuum (HV) chamber around room temperatures. The pressure variations of HV measured by the three HCIGs between $20 ^{\circ}C$ and $26 ^{\circ}C$ were 5.0 %, 5.3 %, and 10.3 %, respectively. However, pressure differences between $21.5 ^{\circ}C$ and $22.5^{\circ}C$ were lower than the gauges uncertainty limits. The pressure variations of the HCIGs at the HV chamber was not directly affected by gauge characteristics, but pressure changes due to room temperatures.
