Normal zone propagaton(NZP) properties were investigated on Bi-223/Ag tapes and prototype HTS cable. NZP experiments in tape were conducted in temperatures from 45K to 77K in zero field. Prototype HTS cable was molded using epoxy and the experiments were carried out under adiabatic condition in LN$_2$. NZP velocities in tapes with tow conditions of DC and AC currents were almost same at each temperature. NZP velocity in prototype HTS cable was 1.9-2.4 cm/sec in LN$_2$. Numerical analysis was carried out by a one-dimensional equation of heat balance. The simulation results of NZP velocity in Bi-2223/Ag tapes were similar to the experimental results.
SMES consists of Superconducting magnet, a power converter, a cryostat and HTS current leads The prototype cryostat with HTS current leads and refrigerators was designed and manufactured for developing micro SMES. The temperature rise under dc current in HTS current leads was measured. The performances of helium boil-off and mechanical stress were evaluated during transfer and vibration tests. The results will be used to develope the micro-SMES system.

High temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets for large-capacity energy storage system need to be composed of toroid magnets with high energy density, low leakage magnetic fields, and easy installation. To realize such a large capacity of a toroid HTS magnet, an HTS cable with large current capacity would be preferred because of the limited DC link voltage and instantaneous high power required for compensation of the disturbance in the power grid. In this paper, the optimal operating strategies of the SMES for peak load reduction of the microgrid system were calculated according to the load variation characteristics, and the effect of compensation of the frequency change in microgrid with a SMES were also simulated. Based on the result of the simulation, key design parameters of SMES coil were presented for two cases to define the specification of the HTS cable with large current capacities for winding of HTS toroid coils, which will be need for development of the HTS cable as a future work.
The heater-triggered switching system for charging of a high temperature superconductor(HTS) is prepared by simulation and investigated its characteristic by experiment. heater-triggered switching system consists of two nickel-chrome alloy heater, an electromagnet and YBCO bulk HTS. There are three important parameters to generate the pumping-current in this system. The timing sequential control of two heters and electromagnet is an important factor to generate pumping-current in the YBCO bulk HTS. Thermal analysis of the switching part in YBCO bulk HTS according to the heater input current was carried out. Electromagnet of 0.6[T] and DC heater input current of 2.3[A] were optimally derived. In this experiment, the maximum pumping current is reaches about 12[A].
We already fabricated a proto-type HTS charging system with photovoltaic (PV) system and obtained design parameters for DC converter and HTS charging system. In order to develop the real scale charging system efficiently, we suggested a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller using a perturb and observe (P&O) MPPT algorithm for PV system. In this paper, we designed and simulated the MPPT controller for the real scale HTS charging system. As well as, the PV module has been analyzed by solving solar cell equivalent equations. The simulated and theoretical results presented here are being considered the next study which addresses the design and fabrication parameters.
In this paper, a Magnetic Core Reactor (MCR) which forms a part of the DC reactor type three-phase high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been developed. This SFCL is more economical than other types with three coils since it uses only one high-Tc superconducting (HTS) coil. When DC reactor type three-phase high-Tc SFCL is developed using just one coil, fewer power electronic devices and shorter HTS wire are needed. The SFCL proposed in this paper needs a power-linking device to connect the SFCL to the power system. The design concept for this device was sprang from the fact that the magnetic energy could be changed into the electrical energy and vice versa. Ferromagnetic material is used as a path of magnetic flux. When high-Tc superconducting DC reactor is separated from the power system by using SCRs, this device also limits fault current until the circuit breaker is opened. The device mentioned above was named Magnetic Core Reactor (MCR). MCR was designed to minimize the voltage drop and total losses. Majority of the design parameters was tuned through experiments with the design prototype. In the experiment, the current density of winding conductor was found to be $1.3\;A/mm^2$, voltage drop across MCR was 20 V and total losses on normal state was 1.3 kW.
With continuous development of the 2nd generation HTS conductor, the critical current of the conductor is also increasing. However, many applications require more than 2 conductors in parallel to transport large current. Applications such as HTS power cables and some HTS current leads usually need much larger transport current than that provided by a single conductor and they require more than several tens of HTS conductors. In the case of parallel connection of multiple HTS conductors, the current distribution depends on the contact resistance of each conductor at the terminals for DC operation. The non-uniform distribution of the terminal resistances results in a non-uniform distribution of the current. The resultant current non-uniformity affects on the measurement of the I-V curve and the thermal performance of the multiple conductors. This paper describes the I-V curves obtained from multiply connected HTS conductors with different terminal contact resistances to investigate the relationship between the distorted I-V curve and heat generation.

The low normal zone propagation velocity (NZPV) of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape leads to a quench protection problem in HTS magnet applications. To overcome this limitation, various studies were conducted on HTS coils without turn-to-turn insulation (NI coils) that can achieve self-protection. On the other hand, NI coils have some disadvantages such as slow charging and discharging time. Previously, the HTS coils with turn-to-turn insulation (INS coils) were operated in power supply (PS) driven mode, which requires physical contact with the external PS at room-temperature, not in persistent current mode. When a quench occurs in INS coils, the low NZPV delays quench detection and protection, thereby damaging the coils. However, the rotary HTS flux pump supplies the DC voltage to the superconducting circuit with INS coils in a non-contact manner, which causes the INS coils to operate in a persistent current mode, while enabling quench protection. In this paper, a new protection characteristic of HTS coils is investigated with INS coils charging through the rotary HTS flux pump. To experimentally verify the quench protection characteristic of the INS coil, we investigated the current magnitude of the superconducting circuit through a quench, which was intentionally generated by thermal disturbances in the INS coil under charging or steady state. Our results confirmed the protection characteristic of INS coils using a rotary HTS flux pump.

We have studied the breaking system that combines a resistive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) and a DC circuit breaker for DC fault current. To verify the design of the 15 kV DC SFCL, which was driven from the previous work, a 500 V DC system was built and a scale-down SFCL were manufactured. The manufactured SFCL module was designed as a bifilar coil which is a structure that minimizes inductive reactance. The manufactured SFCL module has been experiment to verify characteristics of the current-limiting performance in the DC 500 V system. Also, the manufactured FCL module was combined with the DC circuit breaker to be experimented to analyze the breaking performance. As a result of the experiment, when SFCL was combined to the DC circuit breaker, the energy dissipation received by the DC circuit breaker was reduced by up to 84% compared to when the DC circuit breaker operates alone. We are preparing methods and experiments for the optimal method for much higher performance as a future work.
Bi-2223 superconducting wires were fabricated by stacking, drawing process with different precursor powders and different heat-treatment histories. The precursor powders were 2 kinds of Pb content. And a part of the tapes were experienced pre-annealing process which caused tetragonal structure of Bi-2212 phase to orthorhombic structure of it was during drawing process. We confirmed the transformation of Bi-2212 phase from tetragonal structure to orthorhombic structure and reduction of second phases. XRD and DC magnetization analysis were performed in order to investigate the fraction of Bi-2223 phase in Bi-2223/Ag HTS tape. We could achieve best Ic of 70 A class at the Bi-2223/Ag tape using low Pb content of precursor powder and experienced pre-annealing process. DC magnetization analysis was useful to investigate the fraction of Bi-2223 phase in the Bi-2223/Ag tape.
