  • Apartment balcony has been indiscreetly remodeled since the government permitted remodeling on January 2006. But remodeled balcony has a few problems such as increase of heating energy, surface condensation and cold draft. The reason of thermal problem is mainly caused by the window system in a extended balcony. The purpose of this study is to analyze heating and cooling energy and propose the efficient window types for the extended balcony area of a apartment building. 4 types of window system which have fairly high U value in Korea are investigated as follows ; double clear glass, double low-e glass, triple clear glass and triple low-e glass. Comparing double clear 91ass with double low-e glass, triple clear glass and triple low-e glass, simulation results show that 10%, 7% and 15% saving of total primary energy can be expected.

  • The clear cell meningioma[CCM] is a rare and recently described as a histologic variant of meningioma. It has been identified and included in new World Health Organization[WHO] classification of the Central Nervous System[CNS] tumors recently. The CCMs are histologically characterized by sheets of spindled to polygonal cells with clear cytoplasm, which is the expression of high glycogen concentration. The CCMs occur in younger patients and usually are located in the spinal canal and posterior fossa. The most interesting aspect of CCM is the high recurrence rate and aggressiveness. Poor outcome has been shown in intracranial and spinal tumor location, but the indicators that predict outcome have not been established. Until now 22 intracranial CCM cases had been reported in English literature and 3 cases in Korean. The authors report two cases of CCM located at cerebral convexity and one at cavernous sinus those were totally removed [Simpson Grade $I{\sim}II$] by subfrontal, frontal and orbitocranial approaches. The clinical, radiological, histopathological, and neurosurgical features of these cases are discussed with the relevant literatures.

  • Korean students with much exposure to the relatively slow and clear speech used in most English classes in Korea can be expected to have difficulty understanding the casual style that is common in the everyday speech of English speakers. This research attempted to investigate an effective way to utilize casual speech in English education, by exploring the way different speech styles (clear vs. casual) affect Korean learners' comprehension of spoken English. Twenty Korean university students and two native speakers of English participated in a listening session. The English utterances were produced in different speech styles (clear slow, casual slow, clear fast, and casual fast). The Korean students were divided into two groups by English proficiency level. The results showed that the Korean students achieved 69.4% comprehension accuracy, while the native speakers of English demonstrated almost perfect results. The Korean students (especially the low-proficiency group) had more problems perceiving function words than they did perceiving content words. Responding to the different speech styles, the high-proficiency group had more difficulty listening to utterances with phonological variation than they did listening to utterances produced at a faster speed. The low-proficiency group, however, struggled with utterances produced at a faster speed more than they did with utterances with phonological variation. The pedagogical implications of the results are discussed in the concluding section.

  • As expansion of balconies at apartments has been legalized, the major function of the balconies as a thermal buffer zone is disappearing. This weakens the ability of window to insulate heat and multiplies surface condensation. Thus more and more residents require solutions to increasing surface condensation and aggravation in thermal comfort. This study intends to provide basic data by evaluating performance of triple layered Low-E windows, triple layered clear windows, double layered Low-E windows and double layered clear window used for expanded balconies and marketed within the country in terms of surface condensation and thermal environment through simulation. Results revealed that no surface condensation occurred at double layered Low-E windows and triple layered Low-E windows. Surface condensation took place at double layered clear windows and triple layered clear windows at a relative humidity of 60%. Thermal environment analysis suggested that double layered clear windows showed the most time falling into the range of comfort at $23^{\circ}C$. The figure were $22^{\circ}C$ for triple layered clear windows, $22^{\circ}C$ for double layered Low-E windows and $21^{\circ}C$ for triple layered Low-E windows.

  • This trial was conducted to find out some tendencies in variations of grain chalkiness according to their position on a panicle. To know the varietal character in variations of chalkiness and their relations with grain weight, distribution of chalkiness in bulk seed was observed for four varieties. Milyang 23, relatively clear variety and SR601-25-1, much chalky variety were checked for the grain chalkiness in their positions on the panicle. The results obtained are summerized as follows: Rice chalkinss were varied in degree from 0 (clear) to 9 (chalky) within a variety. Large number of grains were distributed to clear for clear variety and to chalky for chalky variety, but almost equal number of grains were distributed to all degree of chalkiness for intermediate chalky variety. For the relationship between degree of chalkiness and grain weight, chalky grains founded in clear variety and clear grains founded in chalky variety decreased in weight, while in intermediate chalky varieties both grains of clear and chalky decreased. There were great varietions in grain chalkiness on a panicle for both clear and chalky varieties. There was no definite trend in distribution of chalkiness except that the first primary branch and terminal grains in every primary branch showed clear in Milyang 23. Mean degree of grain chalkiness was relatively high in grains of middle part of panicle only from Milyang 23.

  • Purpose Recently, the performance of PET/CT scanner has been improved and various techniques have been developed to increase the image quality such as Sensitivity and Resolution. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of Q.Clear (a fully convergent iterative reconstruction) technique of GE Discovery IQ equipment to enhance the image quality. Materials and Methods All scans were acquired by Discovery IQ (GE Healthcare, MI, USA). In NEMA IEC Body Phantom test, Background to Hot-sphere (10 mm, 13 mm, 17 mm, 22 mm) ratio was 1:4 and scan time was 3 minutes. The images were reconstructed by VPHDs (VUE Point High-Definition + SharpIR) and Q.Clear to evaluate each Contrast. We injected 18F-FDG 187 M㏃ to PET/SPECT Performance Phantom. And then it was scanned for 4 minutes to evaluate Resolution and Uniformity. T-test statistical analysis was performed on SUVmax of small lesions less than 2 cm in 100 clinical patients regardless of disease type. Results In the NEMA IEC Body Phantom, the Contrast was $63.6{\pm}5.7%$ (VPHDs) and $75{\pm}4.8%$ (Q.Clear). In the PET/SPECT Performance Phantom, the Resolution was 9.2 mm (VPHDs) and 7.3 mm (Q.Clear). Uniformity of Q.Clear was 10.8% better than VPHDs. T-test statistic of the clinical patients showed a significant difference of p value of 0.021. Conclusion Both the phantom test and the clinical results showed that the quality of the image was improved in Q.Clear was applied. The SUVmax was highly measured in Q.Clear and the lesions were clearly distinguished visually. Therefore Q.Clear can be useful in various aspects such as dose-reduction, patients evaluation and image analysis.

  • From the beginning of the 20th century, calculus is gradually offered to high school students in many countries. However, in Chinese high school, the instruction on calculus is nearly an untouched field. Many people don't believe that high school students can study calculus well. They think calculus knowledge in students' brains is likely to become the “half-cooked food”, and this can produce a bad effect on the study of formal calculus at university. The authors consider that the emphasis of calculus in high school should be the intuitive understanding of fundamental calculus concepts, and it is also the basis of the understanding of formal concepts. Traditional mathematics course with chalk can't meet the needs of calculus teaching. The use of technologies can enhance the calculus teaching, especially the informal and visual calculus teaching, help students understand the underlying concepts. The authors describe how the use of technologies can improve the calculus teaching and learning, and point out that the use of technologies can clear up people's doubts.

  • This study examined how well Korean undergraduate students perceived linked or clear English speech and attempted to find areas of difficulty in their English listening caused by phonological variations. Thirty nine undergraduate students participated in listening sessions. They were divided into high and low groups by their TOEIC listening scores. Samples of linked speech included such phonological processes as linking, palatalization, flapping, and deletion. Results showed that the students had more problem perceiving linked speech than perceiving clear speech. Secondly, both the higher and the lower groups scored low on the linked speech. The lower group had more score difference between linked and clear speech. Thirdly, the students' scores increased from the speech with flapping, through deletion, palatalization, to linking. Finally, there was a strong positive correlation between their TOEIC listening scores and the perception scores. Further studies would be desirable on the level of improvement of TOEIC scores by training the students' listening ability using the linked speech.
