This study was performed to investigate the effect of silk protein (BM-1) treatment on epidermal growth factor (EGF) expression in the wound healing process by excision on the hairless mouse. Significant wound healing activity was observed BM-1 treated group. In BM-1 treated groups ($100{\sim}116 ug/day$), epithelialization of the incision wound was laster with a high rate of wound contraction. In expression of EGF and EGF mRNA, the lesion of BM-1 treated group made EGF to more induce significantly than control lesion. These data suggest that silk protein (BM-1) treatment have wound healing effect by excision on the hairless mouse.

In order to investigate and evaluate the effects of red deer antlers on hair growth in the full-thickness wound healing model, Sprague-Dawley rats were given incision wounds through the full thickness of their dorsal skin and deer antler was applied for 40 days. At specified intervals thereafter (4, 8, 16, 32 and 40 days), the animals were sacrificed and the wound site skins were excised, processed, and sectioned. At post-injury days 16, 32 and 40, longer and more active new hair appeared around the healing wound of antler-treated skin. Histological studies showed that the antler extract markedly increases the depth, size, and number of hair follicles. Expression of IGF-I (insulin-like growth factor) mRNA was detected by RT-PCR and real time RT-PCR. The result showed that the expression of IGF-I (days 16, 32, and 40) was obviously up-regulated in antler-treated skins compared to control skins. Similar results were seen in the ELISA analysis to quantify the IGF-I expression. These results support the notion that wound healing can cause hair growth by enhancing the expression of IGF-I. Deer antler extract appears to have the potential to promote hair growth and could be used in hair growth products.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The number of diabetic patients has recently shown a rapid increase, and delayed wound healing is a major clinical complication in diabetes. In this study, the wound healing effect of Hominis placenta (HP) treatment was investigated in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. MATERIALS/METHODS: Four full thickness wounds were created using a 4 mm biopsy punch on the dorsum. HP was injected subcutaneously at the middle region of the upper and lower wounds. Wounds were digitally photographed and wound size was measured every other day until the 14th day. Wound closure rate was analyzed using CANVAS 7SE software. Wound tissues were collected on days 2, 6, and 14 after wounding for H/E, immunohistochemistry for FGF2, and Masson's trichrome staining for collagen study. RESULTS: Significantly faster wound closure rates were observed in the HP treated group than in normal and diabetes control mice on days 6 and 8. Treatment with HP resulted in reduced localization of inflammatory cells in wounded skin at day 6 in normal mice and at day 14 in diabetic mice (P < 0.01). Expression of fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 2 showed a significant increase in the HP treated group on day 14 in both normal (P < 0.01) and diabetic mice (P < 0.05). In addition, HP treated groups showed a thicker collagen layer than no treatment groups, which was remarkable on the last day, day 14, in both normal and diabetic mice. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, HP treatment has a beneficial effect on acceleration of cutaneous wound healing via regulation of the entire wound healing process, including inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Jeopgolsan (JGS) extract on anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory activities in RAW 264.7 cells and on factors related with fracture healing in skull fractured rat. Methods Experimental animals were divided into four groups: normal group without any treatment (Normal), contral group were treated orally with distilled water (Control), Experimental group were treated orally with JGS at a concentration of 200 mg/kg/day (JGS 200) and Experimental group were treated orally with JGS at a concentration of 200 mg/kg/day (JGS 400). Rats in each group except the normal group were induced fractures in the skull. The 1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity were measured to evaluate antioxidant activity. The production of nitric oxide (NO), $interleukin-1{\beta}$ ($IL-1{\beta}$), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$ ($TNF-{\alpha}$) in the RAW 264.7 cells were measured to evaluate anti-inflammatory activity. The production of osteocalcin calcitonin, carboxy-terminal telepeptides of type II collagen (CTX II), transforming growth $factor-{\beta}$ ($TGF-{\beta}$), bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), Insulin and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in serum of rats were measured to evaluate the effects of fracture healing at 0, 2, 4, and 6th week. X-rays were taken every 3 week from 0 to 6th week to evaluate fracture healing effect. Results 1. No cytotoxicity was observed. 2. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity were increased in a concentration dependent manner, indicating anti-oxidant effect. 3. NO, $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6, and $TNF-{\alpha}$ were not significantly changed, indicating no anti-inflammatory effect. 4. Osteocalcin, Calcitonin, $TGF-{\beta}$ and ALP were significantly increased in the experimental groups. 5. CTX II, insulin were significantly decreased in the expermental groups. 6. Radiologic examination showed that union of fracture was promoted. Conclusions From above results, JGS showed significant results in factors related with fracture healing and radiologic examination. Threfore, JGS is expected to be effective in the treatment of fracture.

Though various studies have analyzed the impact of physically being in the forest, consideration of the time factors is omitted in many of them. Since space and time mutually affect each other, the effects that resulted by the space factor can change when the time factor is introduced. In this paper, the focus was made on how the time spent in the forest influences the four resulting factors: live experiences, flow experiences, health perception and inner psychological perception. This research is based on the surveys taken from April to October, 2014. The focus of the questionnaire was to measure 'Live Experience (LE)', 'Flow (FL)', 'Health Perception (HP)' and 'Inner Psychological Perception (IPP)' levels among the participants. The respondents of the survey aged between 40 and 70, participating in Forest or ecological courses, living in the Northern area of Chungchungnam-do province of Korea. Additionally their past experiences ranged from as little as one year to as long as twenty years in forest related fields. It will be shown that the time spent in the forest affects the levels of LE, FL, HP, IPP, increasing them in proportion to the time with statistical significance. This result would be useful not only for those who are in charge of creating forest healing programs but also for people who study forest healing. Because the time spent in the forest influences the levels of LE, FL, HP, IPP, the forest healing programs will benefit by taking this result into consideration.
The most frequently encountered problems at fixture-implantation sites are lack of adequate bone and proximity to anatomic structures. It is generally accepted that growth factors play an essential role in the healing process and tissue formation, and they have become the focus of grafting materials research. The granules in platelets contain high concentrations of various growth factors. In particular, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a second-generation platelet concentrate that allows the production of fibrin membranes enriched with platelets and growth factors from an anticoagulant-free blood harvest. This study investigated the in vitro effects of PRF on osteoblasts, in terms of the key cellular functions, and especially the effects on two growth factors, the homodimer of platelet-derived growth factor subunit B (BPDGF-BB) and transforming growth factor (TGF)-${\beta}1$, which are associated with wound healing and regeneration (i.e., proliferation and differentiation). The following parameters were investigated: PDGF-BB and TGF-${\beta}1$ levels in PRF, cell viability, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, type 1 collagen synthesis, and the expressions of osteoblast differentiation markers (ALP and runt-related transcription factor 2) and bone matrix proteins (type 1 collagen). The release of autologous growth factors from PRF was maintained for a reasonable period of time, and exerted positive effects on the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts. The use of PRF thus appears to be a promising method for enhancing bone healing and remodeling.
Resveratrol (RSV), a natural polyphenolic compound, is a modulator for cell division and cell migration, and has diverse beneficial properties. Angiogenin (ANG) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are considered to be important mechanisms for cell proliferation, angiogenesis, the formation of tubular structures, and migration. In this study, we investigated whether RSV has a migratory effect in HeLa cells. When cells were treated with $0{\sim}50{\mu}M$ of RSV for 24 hr, the expression of ANG and VEGF was significantly increased in a dose dependent manner measured by real-time PCR. Similarly, we performed time dependent experiments for $50{\mu}M$ RSV treated cells and identified the optimized time at 24 hr. The increased expression in RSV treated cells was confirmed by Western blot analysis. To examine the toxic effects of RSV at the determined conditions, MTT assays were performed. The viabilities were unchanged for $0{\sim}50{\mu}M$ RSV treated cells, while they decreased at $100{\mu}M$ RSV. To examine the effect of migration in RSV treated cells, we performed a wound-healing assay. The migratory rates were significantly enhanced in the RSV treated group. In this study, we found that RSV induces an increase in the expression of migration factors ANG, VEGF, and enhances cell migration for the determined conditions.

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to analyze the implant stability quotient(ISQ) values for Korean non-submerged type implant and determine the factors that affect implant stability. Methods: A total of 49 Korean non-submerged type implants were installed in 24 patients, and their stability was measured by resonance frequency analysis(RFA) at the time of surgery, and 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 12 weeks postoperatively. The data for implant site, age, sex, implant length and diameter, graft performing, bone type, and insertion torque were analyzed. Results: The lowest mean stability measurement was at 3 weeks. There was significant difference between implant placement and 12 weeks. There was significant difference between implant placement and 12 weeks in diameters of 4.1 mm and 4.8 mm. Also, there were significant differences between diameters of 4.1 mm and 4.8 mm at implant placement and 12 weeks after surgery. This result suggests that the factor related to implant diameter may affect the level of implant stability. No statistically significant relationship was found between the resonance frequency analysis and the variables of maxilla/mandible, sex, anterior/posterior, implant length, age of patient, graft performing, bone type, insertion torque during initial healing period. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the factor related to implant diameter may affect the variance of implant stability, and ISQ value of implant was stable enough for proved stability level during initial healing period.
This study investigated the effect of a child care center directors' work stress and awareness of their servant leadership on burnout. The subjects of this study were 200 child care center directors in Incheon. They responded to 'Work Stress Scale', 'Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI)', 'Servant Leadership Scale'. There were five subscales of Servant Leadership Scale (altruistic calling, emotional healing, wisdom, persuasive mapping, and organizational stewardship). Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation and hierarchical regression. Moderating effects were examined using analysis procedures of Baron and Kenny. The major results were as follows. First, child care center directors' burnout and work stress were positively correlated. Child care center directors' burnout and awareness of their servant leadership (emotional healing, wisdom, persuasive mapping, and organizational stewardship) was negatively correlated. Second, child care center directors' work stress, emotional healing, persuasive mapping and organizational stewardship affected their burnout. This means that the work stress of child care center directors increases their burnout. However, the child care center director's servant leadership is a factor in reducing burnout. Third, child care center directors' work stress and organizational stewardship had an interaction effect on burnout. The results suggests that child care center directors' organizational stewardship needs to be considered as an important factor for decreasing their own burnout. We also discussed implications and suggestions for future research and policy makers.
Background: As a kind of common complication of the surgery of perianal diseases, perianal ulcer is known as a nuisance. This study aims to develop a kind of 20(S)-ginsenoside Rg3 (Rg3)-loaded hydrogel to treat perianal ulcers in a rat model. Methods: The copolymers PLGA1600-PEG1000-PLGA1600 were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization process and Rg3-loaded hydrogel was then developed. The perianal ulcer rat model was established to analyze the treatment efficacy of Rg3-loaded hydrogel for ulceration healing for 15 days. The animals were divided into control group, hydrogel group, free Rg3 group, Rg3-loaded hydrogel group, and Lidocaine Gel® group. The residual wound area rate was calculated and the blood concentrations of interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were recorded. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, Masson's Trichrome (MT) staining, and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), Ki-67, CD31, ERK1/2, and NF-κB immunohistochemical staining were performed. Results: The biodegradable and biocompatible hydrogel carries a homogenous interactive porous structure with 10 ㎛ pore size and five weeks in vivo degradation time. The loaded Rg3 can be released sustainably. The in vitro cytotoxicity study showed that the hydrogel had no effect on survival rate of murine skin fibroblasts L929. The Rg3-loaded hydrogel can facilitate perianal ulcer healing by inhibiting local and systematic inflammatory responses, swelling the proliferation of nuclear cells, collagen deposition, and vascularization, and activating ERK signal pathway. Conclusion: The Rg3-loaded hydrogel shows the best treatment efficacy of perianal ulcer and may be a candidate for perianal ulcer treatment.
