  • This paper proposes a high-performance in-loop filter in HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) encoder for Ultra HD video processing in real time. HEVC uses in-loop filter consisting of deblocking filter and SAO(Sample Adaptive Offset) to solve the problems of quantization error which causes image degradation. In the proposed in-loop filter encoder hardware architecture, the deblocking filter and SAO has a 2-level hybrid pipeline structure based on the $32{\times}32CTU$ to reduce the execution time. The deblocking filter is performed by 6-stage pipeline structure, and it supports minimization of memory access and simplification of reference memory structure using proposed efficient filtering order. Also The SAO is implemented by 2-statge pipeline for pixel classification and applying SAO parameters and it uses two three-layered parallel buffers to simplify pixel processing and reduce operation cycle. The proposed in-loop filter encoder architecture is designed by Verilog HDL, and implemented by 205K logic gates in TSMC 0.13um process. At 110MHz, the proposed in-loop filter encoder can support 4K Ultra HD video encoding at 30fps in realtime.

  • This paper proposes high-performance SAO(Sample Adaptive Offset) in HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) encoder for Ultra HD video processing in real time. SAO is a newly adopted technique belonging to the in-loop filter in HEVC. The proposed SAO encoder hardware architecture uses three-layered buffers to minimize memory access time and to simplify pixel processing and also uses only adder, subtractor, shift register and feed-back comparator to reduce area. Furthermore, the proposed architecture consists of pipelined pixel classification and applying SAO parameters, and also classifies four consecutive pixels into EO and BO concurrently. These result in the reduction of processing time and computation. The proposed SAO encoder architecture is designed by Verilog HDL, and implemented by 180k logic gates in TSMC $0.18{\mu}m$ process. At 110MHz, the proposed SAO encoder can support 4K Ultra HD video encoding at 30fps in real time.

  • Even if the demands for ultra-high-quality multimedia contents are increasing, it is difficult to produce, encode, play and transport ultra-high-quality contents under the existing broadcasting environment. By the reason, various technologies for the UHD contents have been developed in order to satisfy the user's needs. In this paper, we propose a design methodology of a broadcasting system, which consists of two parts, for UHD services with two parts. At the transmit part of the proposed system can encode a video into several layered-bitstreams hierarchically, and then transport each bitstream over heterogeneous networks. The receiver part can play the received video by composing the separated bitstreams. The proposed system can adaptively provide both HD and UHD contents according to user's reception conditions by using the heterogeneous networks.

  • Since switched digital video (SDV) provides specific programs only to the subscribers who request the programs, SDV has attracted considerable interest of MSOs for bandwidth efficiency. In North America, MSOs service over 2.3 million households with the SDV for cable networks. In Korea, since demand of HD program, high-speed Internet, VoD, and VoIP is noticeably rising, the SDV is considered as the alternative for bandwidth saving and efficient managing. In this paper, the characteristics, operating structure, and bandwidth saving of the SDV are discussed and technical requirements for the SDV are also introduced. The channel switching performance and stability of the SDV are analyzed through the test-bed.

  • This paper provides a method for compression and transmission of on-chip bus data. As the data traffic on on-chip buses is rapidly increasing with enlarged video resolutions, many video processor chips suffer from a lack of bus bandwidth and their IP cores have to wait for a longer time to get a bus grant. In multimedia data such as images and video, the adjacent data signals very often have little or no difference between them. Taking advantage of this point, this paper develops a simple bus data compression method to improve the chip performance and presents its hardware implementation. The method is applied to a Video Codec - 1 (VC-1) decoder chip and reduces the processing time of one macro-block by 13.6% and 10.3% for SD and HD videos, respectively.

  • Along with the development of network transmission technology, the IPTV market is growing in fast pace. Additionally the UHD resolution broadcasting system along with user experience (UX) that provides better service to user has attracted attention recently since there are not enough research has been done with differentiated the UX that can enhance the UX yet. Therefore we proposed a low complexity syntax level image stitching implementation technique that run with multi-view services, which makes possibility to view multiple channel or video contents on the screen at the same time. Simulation results have demonstrated the liability and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by showing that capability of generating more than 80 frames per second by stitching four Full-HD size videos into UHD frame.

  • Deglutition inspection has been the gold standard for inspection of dysphagia using a penetration device of the division of radiology to date. However, inspection using an endoscope has facilitated diagnosis of dysphagia in recent days. In this study, we compared the results of VFSS alone with those of VFSS combined with FEES to determine if the detection rate of penetration, aspiration, and pharyngeal residue increased. This study evaluated at 130 persons who underwent both VFSS and FEES from December 2013 through March 2014, and used VFSS (FELAVISION, SHIMADZU) and FESS (EVIU LUCERA CV-260SL, OLYMPUS) as devices. After preparing barium diluted solution, yogurt that diluted barium and rice that diluted barium in 2.5 ml, 5 ml, 10 ml by modifying Logemann's protocol in part, and having subjects take the solution, this study confirmed pharyngeal residue, penetration, aspiration etc. VFFS and FEES using full HD video revealed aspiration in 36 of the 130 patients in both inspections. Additionally, aspiration was discovered in 36 patients upon VFFS, but in 41 upon FESS. Although FEES was more sensitive at diagnosing dysphagia, the two inspection methods are complementary, so diagnostic value will be greatly improved when the endoscope operating method and accurate fluoroscopic inspection are combined.

  • This paper considers WiMedia UWB network based wireless ship area network (WSAN) so as to support high-quality multimedia video data services and important shipboard control data. In this paper, prioritized contention access (PCA) and distributed reservation protocol (DRP) based on WiMedia UWB (ECMA-368) MAC protocols are combined and proposed to support mixed high-quality video traffic and shipboard control data traffic applying varying DRP and PCA data periods according to channel condition and link parameter ptimization. It is shown that the proposed dynmaic channel allocation of WiMedia UWB MAC protocol can provide reliable mixed video and shipboard control data traffic as well.
