  • Ag/Ni bimetallic cluster loading on porous carbon fibers was accomplished in order to enhance the HCl removal efficiency of the carbons. The surface properties of the Ag/Ni/carbons were determined by XRD and SEM. N2/77 K adsorption isotherms were investigated using BET and Boers t-plot methods. The HCl removal efficiency was confirmed by a gas chromatography technique, and it was found that that efficiency was predominantly improved in the presence of Ag/Ni clusters compared with the efficiencies of the as-received and single-metal-plated carbons. This indicates that synergetic reactions exist between Ag/Ni and HCl gas, resulting in advanced HCl removal capacity of porous carbons.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the removal efficiencies of HCl in dry reactor and Bag-Filter system. The bicarbonate was used as adsorbent to measure the HCl removal rate. The performance of bicarbonate was evaluated to investigate the removal efficiency. It was analysed that the best operation condition in using bicarbonate in process. The operating parameters was residence time, stoichiometric ratio, temperature and pressure. The Residence time was 1.5 sec, stoichiometric ratio was 1SR, 1.25SR, temperature was $160^{\circ}C$, $180^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$ and the bag filter pressure was 210mmAq, 230mmAq, 250mmAq. In this study it was found that the stoichiometric ratio and pressure can be effected in removal of HCl however the removal efficiency do not depends on temperature. The best operating condition was on 1SR, 230mmAq and $180^{\circ}C$ respectively and in this condition the best removal rate was 99.50%.

  • The removal efficiencies by elastic fire gas mask of toxic gases CO, HCl, HCN, and $SO_2$ produced by a fire have a key role in saving lives. The elastic fire gas mask comprises a visible window, elastic hood, gas purification canister, and air vent. It does not have hair or neck thongs, which makes it easy to use and put on quickly. This research examined the removal efficiency of toxic gases by such a mask. The removal efficiencies for CO with a background concentration of 2505.0 ppm were 99.99 and 99.98% after 3.5 and 8.5 min, respectively. The residual CO concentration was drastically increased after 8.5 min. The removal efficiencies for HCl, HCN, and $SO_2$ with background concentrations of 1003.0, 399.0, and 100.3 ppm, respectively, were 100% after 20 min.

  • In this work, a nickel metal (Ni) electroplating on the activated carbon fiber (Ni/ACFs) surfaces was carried out to remove the toxic hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas. The surface properties of the treated ACFs were determined by using nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K, SEM, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. HCl removal efficiency was confirmed by a gas-detecting tube technique. As a result, the nickel metal contents on the ACF surfaces were increased with increasing the plating time. And, it was found that the specific surface area or the micropore volume of the ACFs studied was slightly decreased as increasing the plating time. Whereas, it was revealed that the HCl removal efficiency containing nickel metal showed higher efficiency values than that of untreated ACFs. These results indicated that the presence of nickel metal on the ACF surfaces played an important role in improving the HCl removal over the Ni/ACFs, due to the catalytic reactions between nickel and chlorine.

  • The atmospheric pressure plasma treatments ($Ar/O_2$ and $Ar/N_2$) of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were carried out to introduce hydrophilic functional groups on carbon surfaces in order to enhance the hydrogen chloride gas (HCl) adsorption. Surface properties of the ACFs were determined by XPS and SEM. $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms were investigated by BET and D-R (Dubinin-Radushkevich) plot methods. The HCl removal efficiency was confirmed by HCl detecting tubes (range:1~40 or 40~1000 ppm). As experimental results, it was found that all plasma-treated ACFs showed the decrease in the pore volume, but the HCl removal efficiency showed higher level than that of the untreated ACFs. This result indicated that the plasma treatments led to the conformation of hydrophilic functional groups on the carbon surfaces, resulting in the increase of the interaction between the ACFs and HCl gas.

  • Soils collected from an agricultural field in Youngdong, Chungbuk province were intentionally: contaminated with lead and copper. The efficiencies of soil washing with HCl, SDS and Tween 80 were investigated through the column mode experiments. Washing with 0.1 N HCl obtained the best result for lead and copper removal (95.04 %, 95.94 %). In case of SDS, lead and copper removal rate was such poor as 7.1 % and copper was 24.04 %, respectively. Meanwhile, washing of contaminated soil with Tween 80, did not show any significant removal effect. It was found that the washing efficiency was dependent on pH of washing agent.

  • Laboratory soil washing experiments with HCl or EDTA were conducted to remediate lead-contaminated soil in a firing range. After lead bullets were removed by standard sieve #18 (1.0 mM), Pb concentrations were measured by EPA Method 3050B (9,443 mg/kg) and Korea Standard Test (4,803.5 mg/kg). The results of the batch test showed that the removal efficiency curve was logarithmic and approximately 90% of lead in soil was removed, when HCl was used. In case of EDTA, the removal efficiency increased proportionally to the concentration of EDTA, up to 98% lead removal with 0.1M EDTA. High mixing strength resulted in increase of removal efficiency and kinetics showed that the most lead was extracted in 10 min.

  • The feasibility of using cork oak bark for phosphorus removal from wastewater was evaluated in this study. Recently, development of more cost-effective media while maintaining high efficiency in pollutants removal has received concern. Barks have a negative surface charge and, hence, tend to show a high affinity to bind cations, and they need to undergo chemical modification to increase their adsorption capacity of anions. Bark was hydrolyzed by HCl solution and it received modification using an aqueous solution of high molecular weight polyethylenimine(PEI). Surface modification with HCl and PEI resulted in a decrease of specific surface area of the bark from $1.932 m^2/g$ to $1.094 m^2/g$. The adsorption experiments were carried out in batch tests and the data were fitted to the Langmuir isotherm and Freundlich isotherm equations. Phosphate removal rate was higher at the lower solution pH possibly due to the form of phosphate ion in solution. For the initial phosphate concentration of 10 mg/L, maximum adsorption was 20.88 mg P/g at pH 3 and 12.02 mg P/g at pH 5. Mechanism of phosphorus sorption onto the HCl-PEI bark was examined through FT-IR spectrometer. Ion exchange between $NH^+$ and $H_2PO_4{^-}$ appeared to be a key mechanism of phosphate adsorption onto the HCl-PEI bark surface.

  • Thermodynamic evaluation indicates that nearly 100% conversion of elemental mercury to oxidized mercury can be attained by HCl of several tens of ppm level at the temperature window of SCR reaction. Cu-, Fe-, Mn-chloride loaded $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalysts revealed good NO removal activity at the operating temperature window of SCR process. The catalysts with high desorption temperature indicating adsorption strength of $NH_3$ revealed higher NO removal activity. The HCl fed to the reaction gases promoted the oxidation of mercury. However, the activity for the oxidation of elemental mercury to oxidized mercury by HCl was suppressed by $NH_3$ inhibiting the adsorption of HCl to catalyst surface under SCR reaction condition containing $NH_3$ for NO removal. Metal chloride loaded $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalysts showed much higher activity for mercury oxidation than $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst without metal chloride under SCR reaction condition. This is primarily attributed to the participation of chloride in metal chloride on the catalyst surface promoting the oxidation of elemental mercury.

  • DIWS system was introduced to treat HCl gas from the scrubber of iron and steel industry according as the regulation of air quality is expected to be changed to 2ppm. pH of condensed water at stack was increased to 6.0. While 13.3ppm of inflow HCl was introduced to DIWS system, the average exhaust gas was 0.43ppm with 96.9% of removal efficiency. Compared with HCl data of TMS, the stable removal efficiency was shown in DIWS system, but the phenomenon of data hunting was also observed with different types of TMS apparatus.
