This paper investigates the steady state combustion characteristics of LPG homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) engine with variable valve timing(VVT) and dimethyl ether(DME) direct injection, to find out the benefits in exhaust gas emissions. VVT is one of the attractive ways to control HCCI engine. Hot internal residual gas which is controlled by VVT device, makes fuel is evaporated easily, and ignition timing is advanced. Regular gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas(LPG) were used as main fuel and dimethyl ether(DME) was used as ignition promoter in this research. Operating range and exhaust emissions were compared LPG HCCI engine with gasoline HCCI engine. Operating range of LPG HCCI engine was wider than that of gasoline HCCI engine. The start of combustion was affected by the intake valve open(IVO) timing and the ${\lambda}TOTAL$ due to the latent heat of vaporization, not like gasoline HCCI engine. At rich operation conditions, the burn duration of the LPG HCCI engine was longer than that of the gasoline HCCI engine. CAD at 20% and 90% of the mass fraction burned were also more retarded than that of the gasoline HCCI engine. And carbon dioxide(CO2) emission of LPG HCCI engine was lower than that of gasoline HCCI engine. However, carbon oxide(CO) and hydro carbon(HC) emission of LPG HCCI engine were higher than that of gasoline HCCI engine.
This paper describes the homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine for a new concept. HCCI engines are being considered as a future alternative for diesel and gasoline engines. HCCI engines have the potential for high indicated thermal efficiency under part load and very low NOx emissions. The objective of this paper is to clear the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate on the HCCI. For this purpose, a 4-cylinder, compression ignition engine was converted into a HCCI engine This work has been run with propane and butane fuels at a constant speed.

Automobile companies and research institutions in leading automobile-manufacturing nations have recently been very active with research regarding the HCCI engine for use in future vehicles. Because HCCI engines take advantage of high compression ratio and heat release rate, they exhibit high efficiency found in compression ignition engines. HCCI engines also utilize a lean air/fuel ratio resulting in low emissions of NO$_{x}$ and PM (particulate matter). The objective of this research is to determine the effects of EGR rate on the combustion processes of HCCI. for this purpose, a 4-cylinder, compression ignition engine was converted into a HCCI engine, and a heating device was installed to raise the temperature of the intake air and also to make it more consistent. In addition, a pressure sensor was inserted into each of the cylinders to investigate the differences in characteristics among the cylinders. The experimental study of the effects of EGR rate on various gas emissions, engine performance, etc. should prove to be a valuable source of information for the development of the HCCI engine.e.
A free piston linear engine could be operated under HCCI combustion due to its variable compression ratios. To obtain HCCI combustion, the free piston linear engine needs a high compression ratio to achieve auto-ignition of the fuel/air mixture. In this study, an idea for obtaining a high compression ratio using the transition from SI combustion to HCCI combustion was proposed. The fuel used in this study is hydrogen, which is considered to be an environmentally friendly fuel. Besides, the effects of key parameters such as equivalence ratio (${\phi}$), load resistance ($R_L$) and intake temperature ($T_{in}$) on the SI-HCCI transition were numerically investigated. The simulation results show that the SI-HCCI transition is successful without any significant reduction of in-cylinder pressure as the intake temperature is increased from $T_{in}$=300K (SI mode) to $T_{in}$=450K (HCCI mode), while the load resistance and equivalence ratio are retained respectively at $R_L=120{\Omega}$ and ${\phi}$=0.6 in both SI mode and HCCI mode.
HCCI engines have mainly focused on achieving low temperature combustion in order to obtain higher efficiency and lower emission. One of practical difficulties in HCCI combustion is to control the start of combustion and subsequent combustion phasing. The choice of primary reference fuels in HCCI strategy is one of various promising solutions to make HCCI combustion ignition-controlled. The behavior of ignition delay to the frequency variation of sinusoidal velocity oscillation is computationally investigated under HCCI conditions of PRF75 using a reduced chemistry in a counterflow configuration. The second-stage ignition is more delayed as the higher frequency is imposed on nozzle velocity fluctuation whereas the first-stage ignition is not much influenced.

HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) hydrogen engine has relatively narrower operation range caused by knock occurrence due to the rapid pressure rising by using higher compression ratio. In this study, EGR as one of the countermeasure methods is considered to extend operation range of HCCI hydrogen engine. Also, the effects of hydrogen EGR are compared with the effects of EGR using hydrocarbon fuel. Hydrocarbon EGR is carried out by adding carbon dioxide to exhaust gas of HCCI hydrogen engine. As the results, EGR has positive effects on a HCCI hydrogen engine in reducing rate of pressure rise as same as the other engines used hydrocarbon fuels. However, the effects of hydrogen EGR are better than those of hydrocarbon EGR in decreasing minimum compression ratio and rate of pressure rise. When applying EGR to HCCI hydrogen engine by 20% rate, the rate of pressure rise decreases by 58% and it results in about 48% increase of the operation range in terms of supply energy.
Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) shows great potential for low $NO_x$ emission but is hampered by the problem of no direct method to control the combustion process. Therefore, HCCI combustion becomes unstable easily, especially at lower and higher engine load. This paper presents a method to achieve diesel-fueled HCCI combustion, which involves directly injecting diesel fuel into the cylinder before the piston arrives at top dead center in the exhaust stroke and adjusting the valve overlap duration to trap more high temperature residual gas in the cylinder. The combustion stability of diesel-fueled HCCI combustion and the effects of engine load, speed, and valve overlap on it are the main points of investigation. The results show that: diesel-fueled HCCI combustion has two-stage heat release rate (low temperature and high temperature heat release) and very low $NO_x$ emission, combustion stability of the HCCI engine is worse at lower load because of misfire and at higher load because of knock, the increase in engine speed aids combustion stability at lower load because the heat loss is reduced, and increasing negative valve overlap can increase in-cylinder temperature which aids combustion stability at lower load but harms it at higher load.

The HCCI engine is a prospective internal combustion engine with which high diesel-like efficiencies and very low NOx and particulate emissions can be achieved. However, several technical issues must be resolved before HCCI engines can be used for different applications. One of the issues concerning the HCCI engine is that the operating range of this engine is limited by the rapid pressure rise caused by the release of excessive heat. This heat release is because of the self-accelerated combustion reaction occurring in the engine and the resulting engine knock in the high-load region. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of thermal stratification and fuel stratification in reducing the pressure rise rate in an HCCI engine. The concentrations of NOx and CO in the exhaust gas are also evaluated to confirm combustion completeness and NOx emission. The computation is carried out with the help of a multizone code, by using the information on the detailed chemical kinetics and the effect of thermal and fuel stratification on the onset of ignition and rate of combustion. The engine is fueled with dimethyl ether (DME), which allows heat release to occur in two stages, as opposed to methane, which allows for heat release in a single stage.
Controlled Auto-ignition (CAI) combustion processes can be broadly divided between a CAI process that is applied to four-cycle engines and a CAI process that is applied to two-cycle engines. The former process is generally referred to as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion and the later process as Active Thermo-Atmosphere Combustion (ATAC) The region of stable engine operation differs greatly between these two processes, and it is thought that the elucidation of their differences and similarities could provide useful information for expanding the operation region of HCCI combustion. In this research, the same two-cycle engine was operated under both the ATAC and HCCI combustion processes to compare their respective combustion characteristics. The results indicated that the ignition timing was less likely to change in the ATAC process in relation to changes in the fuel octane number than it was in the HCCI combustion process.
