  • In this study, single cylinder engine experiment was carried out to investigate combustion characteristics spray guided direct injection spark ignition engine. In the result of engine experiment, it was shown that flammable window of injection timing was existed. The combustion efficiency increased with retarding injection timing, reaching a peak value, subsequent to decrease again. These results were likely due to the effect of ambient pressure on stratified-premixed mixture preparation. 150 bar injection pressure condition and retarded injection timing from the best combustion efficiency injection timing showed the highest IMEP value due to the advanced combustion phase of the maximum combustion efficiency condition. HC emission showed same trend of combustion efficiency, and smoke emission was increased as injection timing was retarded due to the increased locally rich area in the high ambient pressure. NOx emission showed decreasing trend as injection timing was retarded. This is likely due to the maximum in-cylinder temperature was decreased with retarded combustion phase.

  • Nitrate can serve as a terminal electron acceptor in place of carbon dioxide and inhibit methane emission in the rumen and nitrate reducing bacteria might help enhance the reduction of nitrate/nitrite, which depends on the type of feed offered to animals. In this study the effects of three levels of sodium nitrate (0, 5, 10 mM) on fermentation of three diets varying in their wheat straw to concentrate ratio (700:300, low concentrate, LC; 500:500, medium concentrate, MC and 300:700, high concentrate, HC diet) were investigated in vitro using buffalo rumen liquor as inoculum. Nitrate reducing bacteria, isolated from the rumen of buffalo were tested as a probiotic to study if it could help in enhancing methane inhibition in vitro. Inclusion of sodium nitrate at 5 or 10 mM reduced (p<0.01) methane production (9.56, 7.93 vs. 21.76 ml/g DM; 12.20, 10.42 vs. 25.76 ml/g DM; 15.49, 12.33 vs. 26.86 ml/g DM) in LC, MC and HC diets, respectively. Inclusion of nitrate at both 5 and 10 mM also reduced (p<0.01) gas production in all the diets, but in vitro true digestibility (IVTD) of feed reduced (p<0.05) only in LC and MC diets. In the medium at 10 mM sodium nitrate level, there was 0.76 to 1.18 mM of residual nitrate and nitrite (p<0.01) also accumulated. In an attempt to eliminate residual nitrate and nitrite in the medium, the nitrate reducing bacteria were isolated from buffalo adapted to nitrate feeding and introduced individually (3 ml containing 1.2 to $2.3{\times}10^6$ cfu/ml) into in vitro incubations containing the MC diet with 10 mM sodium nitrate. Addition of live culture of NRBB 57 resulted in complete removal of nitrate and nitrite from the medium with a further reduction in methane and no effect on IVTD compared to the control treatments containing nitrate with autoclaved cultures or nitrate without any culture. The data revealed that nitrate reducing bacteria can be used as probiotic to prevent the accumulation of nitrite when sodium nitrate is used to reduce in vitro methane emissions.

  • Low-temperature combustion (LTC) strategies, such as HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition), PCCI (Premixed Charge Compression Ignition), and RCCI (Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition), have been developed to effectively reduce NOx and PM while increasing the thermal efficiency of diesel engines. Through numerical analysis, this study examined the effects of the injection timing and two-stage injection ratio of diesel fuel, a highly reactive fuel, on the performance and exhaust gas of RCCI engines using gasoline as the low reactive fuel and diesel as the highly reactive fuel. In the case of two-stage injection, combustion slows down if the first injection timing is too advanced. The combustion temperature decreases, resulting in lower combustion performance and an increase in HC and CO. The injection timing of approximately -60°ATDC is considered the optimal injection timing considering the combustion performance, exhaust gas, and maximum pressure rise rate. When the second injection timing was changed during the two-stage injection, considering the combustion performance, exhaust gas, and the maximum pressure increase rate, it was judged to be optimal around -30°ATDC. In the case of two-stage injection, the optimal result was obtained when the first injection amount was set to approximately 60%. Finally, a two-stage injection rather than a single injection was considered more effective on the combustion performance and exhaust gas.

  • Objective: Whether metabolic redistribution occurs in patients with white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is unknown. This study aimed 1) to propose a measure of the brain metabolic network for an individual patient and preliminarily apply it to identify impaired metabolic networks in patients with WMHs, and 2) to explore the clinical and imaging features of metabolic redistribution in patients with WMHs. Materials and Methods: This study included 50 patients with WMHs and 70 healthy controls (HCs) who underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/MRI. Various global property parameters according to graph theory and an individual parameter of brain metabolic network called "individual contribution index" were obtained. Parameter values were compared between the WMH and HC groups. The performance of the parameters in discriminating between the two groups was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The correlation between the individual contribution index and Fazekas score was assessed, and the interaction between age and individual contribution index was determined. A generalized linear model was fitted with the individual contribution index as the dependent variable and the mean standardized uptake value (SUVmean) of nodes in the whole-brain network or seven classic functional networks as independent variables to determine their association. Results: The means ± standard deviations of the individual contribution index were (0.697 ± 10.9) × 10-3 and (0.0967 ± 0.0545) × 10-3 in the WMH and HC groups, respectively (p < 0.001). The AUC of the individual contribution index was 0.864 (95% confidence interval, 0.785-0.943). A positive correlation was identified between the individual contribution index and the Fazekas scores in patients with WMHs (r = 0.57, p < 0.001). Age and individual contribution index demonstrated a significant interaction effect on the Fazekas score. A significant direct association was observed between the individual contribution index and the SUVmean of the limbic network (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The individual contribution index may demonstrate the redistribution of the brain metabolic network in patients with WMHs.

  • As the environmental pollution becomes serious global problem, the regulation of emission exhausted from automobiles is strengthen. Therefore, it is very important to know how to reduce the NOx and PM simultaneously in diesel engines, which has lot of merits such as high thermal efficiency, low fuel consumption and durability. By this reason, the new concept called as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) engines are spotlighted because this concept reduced NOx and P.M. simultaneously. However, it is well known that HCCI engines increased HC and CO. Thus, the investigation of combustion characteristics which consists cool and hot flames for HCCI engines were needed to obtain the optimal combustion condition. In this study, combustion characteristics for direct inject type HCCI engine such as quantity of cool flame and hot flame, ignition timing and ignition delay were investigated to clarify the effects of these parameters on performance. The results revealed that diesel combustion showed the two-stage ignition of cool flame and hot flame, the rate of cool flame increase and hot flame decrease with increasing intake air temperature. On the other hand, the gasoline combustion is the single-stage ignition and ignition timing is near the TDC. In addition mixed fuel combustion showed different phenomenon, which depends on the ratio of gasoline component. Ignition timing of mixed fuel is retarded near the TDC and the ignition delay is increased according to ratio of gasoline.

  • The most desirable diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) should have the properties of oxidizing CO, HC and SOF effectively at low exhaust gas temperature while minimizing the formation of sulfate at high exhaust gas temperature. Precious metals such as platinum and palladium have been known to be sufficiently active for oxidizing SOF and also to have high activity for the oxidation of sulfur dioxide $(SO_2)$ to sulfur trioxide $(SO_3)$. There is a need to develop a highly selective catalyst which can promote the oxidation SOF efficiently, on the other hand, suppress the oxidation of $SO_2$. In this study, a Pt-V catalyst was prepared by impregnating platinum and vanadium onto a Ti-Si wash coated ceramic monolith substrate. A prepared Pt-V catalytic converter was installed on a heavy duty diesel engine and the effect of fuel sulfur on particulate matter (PM) of heavy duty diesel engine was measured. The effect of fuel sulfur on PM of Pt-V was also compared with that of a commercialized Pt catalyst currently being used in some of the heavy duty diesel engines in advanced countries. Only 1 $\sim$ 3% of sulfur in the diesel fuel was converted to sulfate in PM for the engine without catalyst, but almost 100% of sulfur conversion was achieved for the engine with Pt catalyst at maximum loading condition. In the case of Pt-V catalyst, there was no big difference in conversion with the base engine even at maximum loading condition. The reason of SOF increase according to the increase of suflate emission was identified as the washing off effect of bound water in sulfate.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of the ethanol blending in diesel-ethanol blended fuels on the spray and combustion characteristics in a common-rail four-cylinder diesel engine. For the analysis of the spray characteristics, the spray images were obtained using a high speed camera with metal-halide lamps. From these spray images, the macroscopic spray characteristics such as the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were investigated. Also, the combustion characteristics including the combustion pressure and the rate of heat release were studied with the analysis of the exhaust emissions in diesel-ethanol blended fuel driven diesel engine. It can be confirmed from the experiment on spray characteristics of diesel-ethanol blended fuels that the increased ethanol blending ratio induced the decrease of the spray tip penetration after the end of the injection. The spray cone angle slightly increased by the blending of ethanol fuel. In the experiment on atomization characteristics, the ethanol blending caused the improvement of the diesel atomization performance. On the other hand, at the same engine load condition, the increase of the ethanol blending ratio lead to lengthen the ignition delays, and to decrease the peak combustion pressure and the rate of heat release. Totally, the combustion and emission characteristics of ULSD and DE10 showed similar characteristics. However, in the case of DE20, CO and HC rapidly increased, and $NO_x$ decreased. It can be believed that 20% ethanol disturbed the combustion of diesel-ethanol blended fuel due to the low cetane number and evaporation.

  • GTL(Gas-to-Liquids) fuel technology was converted from the natural gas, coal and biomass into the diesel or kerosene by Fisher-Tropsch synthesis. GTL fuel have very good merits on high cetane number, low density, free sulfur, lower aromatics contents and no poly-aromatic hydrocarbons as well as the autoignition characteristics. These physical properties make it valuable as a diesel fuel with lower emissions than the conventional diesel fuel. Furthermore, GTL fuel can be use not to the engine any modification. Therefore, to evaluate emissions of GTL fuel, the tested diesel vehicles were fueled on blends of GTL fuel/ultra low sulfur diesel fuel(ULSD). And then, we found out that GTL fuel reduced regulated emissions(CO, NOx, HC, PM) compare with conventional diesel fuel.

  • Since the liquid phase LPG injection(LPLI) system has an advantage of higher power and lower emission characteristics than the mixer type fuel supply system, many studies and applications have been conducted. However, the heat extraction, due to the evaporation of liquid fuel, causes not only a dropping of LPG fuel but also icing phenomenon that is a frost of moisture in the air around the nozzle tip. Because both lead to a difficulty in the control of accurate air fuel ratio, it can result in poor engine performance and a large amount of HC emissions. The experimental investigation was carried out on the bench test rig in this study. It was found that n-butane, that has a relatively high boiling point($-0.5^{\circ}C$), was a main species of droplet composition and also found that the droplet problem was improved by the use of a large inner to outer bore ratio nozzle whose surface roughness is smooth. The icing phenomena were decreased when the an engine head temperature was increased, although a large amount of icing deposit was still observed in the case of $87^{\circ}C$. Also, it was observed that the icing phenomenon is improved by using anti-icing bushing.
