  • The physiological activities and amino acid compositions of dried lavers of Porphyra from the Jangheung, Seochen and Haenam coasts were determined. The ethanol extract of the Haenam dried laver exhibited the greatest 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (56.1%), ferric-reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) value(86.5 mM) and total polyphenol content (3.51 ppm) of these dried laver products. In addition, there was a strong positive correlation between the antioxidative activity and total polyphenol content of the laver products, suggesting that polyphenol compounds contribute to the antioxidant capacity in the ethanol extract of dried laver. However, there was no difference among the extracts in terms of cell proliferation activity. Fourteen combined amino acids were identified in oligopeptides from the dried laver products. Of the three extracts, that of the Haenam dried laver contained the highest levels of both free and total amino acids including alanine, glutamic acid, taurine, phosphoserine, and aspartic acid.

  • One coastal village in Haenam-gun and two in Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do were surveyed for intestinal parasite infections by fecal examination. The egg positive rates of Gymnophalloides seoi were high, $24.1\%$ (14/58) in Haenam-gun and $9.3\%$ (11/118) in Yeongam-gun. The egg positive rates of heterophyids, including Heterophyes nocens, and of Clonorchis sinensis were $10.3\%\;and\;6.9\%$ in Haenam-gun, and $14.4\%\;and\;8.5\%$ in Yeongam-gun, respectively. After praziquantel treatment and purgation, a total of 37,761 fluke specimens were recovered from 17 patients; 11 in Haenam-gun and 6 in Yeongam-gun. Gymnophalloides seoi was the most commonly recovered species, with 37,489 specimens in total (2,205 per person). Other recovered flukes included Heterophyes nocens, Stictodora fuscata, Heterophyopsis continua, Pygidiopsis sUmma, and undetermined species. These results indicate that the areas surveyed are new endemic foci of G. seoi.

  • Cretaceous volcanics and volcaniclastic sediments are abundantly distributed in the Haenam area located at the tip of the southwestern part of the Yongdong-Kwangju depression zone. The Cretaceous strata correlated with the Yuchon Group of the Kyongsang Supergroup are divided into three formations: Hwawon Formation, Uhangri Formation and Haenam Formation in ascending order. The stratovolcanic Hwawon Formation is mainly composed of andesite and andesitic pyroclastics. The Uhangri Formation is the lacustrine sedimentary deposit. The Haenam Formation is composed of Hwangsan tuff, Haenam tuff, Yongdang tuff, Seoho tuff, and also Acidic lava, both being formed by a cogenetic acidic volcanism. The topographic circular structure of the Cretaceous strata was controlled by the doming of Jurassic Sani granite. Cretaceous volcanism in the study area is characterized by the two stages of intermediate volcanic activity in Cenomanian to Albian, and acidic volcanic activity in Campanian to Coniacian.

  • Food consumption pattern changes, including a decrease in rice consumption and increasing demand for fresh vegetables, along with declining food self-sufficiency rate, more importance is being placed on agricultural industry within Korea. Taking these changes into consideration, there is an increasing necessity for managing upland fields on agricultural sector to revitalize agricultural land use. Therefore, in this study, upland use type was classified into agricultural economic, environmental conservation, and rural social frames. The purpose of this study was to suggest upland use plan with farm manager registration information and spatial data. As results of this analysis, the mean area of agricultural economic frame in Haenam (16.47 ha) was found to be wider than Muan (3.17 ha), and scale improvement zones (54 zones) were located in only Haenam. In case of environmental conservation frame, there's no zone of scenic agriculture land in both study areas, but landuse transition zones were located in Muan (278 zones) and Haenam (604 zones). Agro-healing zones of rural social frame were 1,018 zones in Muan and 1,588 zones in Haenam and kitchen garden sites were 342 zones in Muan and 370 zones in Haenam. These results could be used when we establish the plan of an agricultural infrastructure project or select places for a collaborative agricultural land use project.

  • Land use and land cover change (LULCC) due to human activities directly affects natural systems and contributes to changes in carbon exchange and climate through a range of feedbacks. How land use and land cover changes affect carbon exchanges can be assessed using multiyear measurement data from micrometeorological flux towers. The objective of the research is to assess the impact of land use and land cover change on carbon exchange in a heterogeneous cropland area. The heterogeneous cropland area in Haenam, South Korea is also subjected to a land conversion due to rural development. Therefore, the impact of the change in land utilization in this area on carbon exchange should be assessed to monitor the cycle of energy, water, and carbon dioxide between this key agricultural ecosystem and the atmosphere. We are currently conducting the research based on 10 years flux measurement data from Haenam Koflux site and examining the LULCC patterns in the same temporal scale to evaluate whether the LULCC in the surrounding site and the resulting heterogeneity (or diversity) have a significant impact on carbon exchange. Haenam cropland is located near the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula with land cover types consisting of scattered rice paddies and various croplands (seasonally cultivated crops). The LULCC will be identified and quantified using remote sensing satellite data and then analyzing the relationships between LULCC and flux footprint of $CO_2$ from tower flux measurement. We plan to calculate annual flux footprint climatology map from 2003 to 2012 from the 10 years flux observation database. Eventually, these results will be used to quantify how the system's effective performance and reserve capacity contribute to moving the system towards more sustainable configuration. Broader significance of this research is to understand the co-evolution of the Haenam agricultural ecosystem and its societal counterpart which are assumed to be self-organizing hierarchical open systems.

  • This paper deals with HVDC simulation. And the purpose of this paper is to reproduce measurements recorded at HVDC site and to verify the control gains and control actions. In this paper, the target of simulation study is Cheju-Haenam HVDC system. Because Cheju-Haenam HVDC system include analogue controller and digital controller, the detailed digital model considered nonlinear characteristics of analogue controllers is development for high accurate firing and control action. Finally the simulation results which is simulated by PSCAD/EMTDC is compared with measurement signals.

  • As the electrical power industry is restructured, the electrical power exchange is extended. One of the key information used to determine how much power can be transferred through the network is known as available transfer capability (ATC). To calculate ATC, traditional deterministic approach is based on the severest case, but the approach has the complexity of procedure. Therefore, novel approach for ATC calculation is proposed using cost optimization in this paper Cheju Island interconnected HVDC system with mainland in KEPCO (Korean Electric Power Corporation) systems, and the demand of Cheju Island increases about 10 ($\%$) every year. To supply for increasing demand, the supply of HVDC system must be increased. This paper proposed the optimal transfer capability of HVDC system between Haenam in mainland and Cheju in Chju Island through cost optimization. The cost optimization is considered production cost in Cheju Island, wheeling charge through Haenam-Cheju HVDC system and outage cost with one depth (N-1 contingency)

  • One of the electrode in Haenam converter, which is role of rectifier in Jeju-Haenam HVDC system is destroyed and we found many cracks at another electrode and we also found many cracks in Jeju converter station, which is role of inverter of Jeju-Haenam. HVDC system, there is no exact reason for these phenomenon, even though the life cycle of these electrode is 40 years. So, the experts for HVDC system in KEPCO and Anotec corporation, which is manufacturer of electrode, would perform research for the reason of electrode disorder. In this paper analyze the reason of electrode disorder and corrosion in high voltage direct current system.
