  • Sooting characteristics of counterflow ethylene/propane mixture flames have been experimentally studied to investigate the fuel structure effect on PHM and soot formation. Laser-induced incandescene and laser-induced fluorescene techniques were employed to measure soot volume fraction and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration, respectively. Importance of $C_{3-}$species on PAH growth as well as the H-abstraction-C$_2$ $H_2$addition (HACA) mechanism has been emphasized, considering that PAH growth rate is greater for with mixed fuel than fer pure fuel flames. It was also confirmed that HACA pathways are the dominant soot growth mechanism. A new PAH growth model including both $C_{2-}$ and $C_{3-}$growth mechanisms is proposed based on the experimental results.

  • IEEE 802.11 devices are widely used, and terminals can be equipped with multiple IEEE 802.11 interfaces as low-cost IEEE 802.11 devices are deployed. The off-the-shelf IEEE 802.11 devices provide multiple channels and multiple data rates. In practical multi-channel networks, since there is channel heterogeneity which indicates that channels have different signal characteristics for the same node, channels should be efficiently assigned to improve network capacity. In addition, in multi-rate networks, low-rate links severely degrade the performance of high-rate links on the same channel, which is known as performance anomaly. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a heterogeneity aware channel assignment (HACA) algorithm that improves network performance by reflecting channel heterogeneity and performance anomaly. Through NS-2 simulations, we validate that the HACA algorithm shows improved performance compared with existing channel assignment algorithms that do not reflect channel heterogeneity.

  • Numerical investigation was performed to study on the soot formation characteristics in the WSR according to the CO addition. Ethylene and pure air were used as a fuel and an oxidizer, respectively, and three different equivalence ratios (2.0, 2.5, 3.0) were used in the calculation. The resulted CO mole fraction of 10 % CO addition showed the maximum value in spite of the least CO supply. This means that the conversion of CO to soot and other carbon compounds is weakened under incipient soot formation. The soot volume fraction was decreased with increasing the CO addition because the important species for soot formation such as pyrene and acetylene, were decreased with the addition of CO. When the equivalence ratio was 2.5, the soot volume fraction shows the highest value, which results from the contribution of fuel rich condition and reacting temperature. Furthermore, surface growth rate and species concentrations justified the HACA mechanism for soot formation.

  • The risk of climate change has been long acknowledged, and ongoing efforts to overcome this issue, within the shipping sector, with the international maritime organization playing a central role. Conducting research on characteristics of soot formation is crucial to control its occurrence within the combustion process. In this study, the laser extinction method and chemical reaction numerical analysis were employed to examine the alterations in the state of chemical species associated with flame temperature, flame visual, and soot formation by mixing nitrogen, an inert gas, in the counterflow diffusion flame based on ethylene gas. The findings of the study suggest that as the mixing ratio of nitrogen increased, both the flame temperature and soot volume fraction decreased. Additionally, the area in which soot particles were distributed also decreased, and the volume fraction decrease rate declined when the mixing ratio increased by more than 30%. The mole fraction of the chemical species involved in soot growth also decreased. the chemical species associated with the HACA reaction were affected by variations in the hydrocarbon fuel ratio, and the chemical species related to the odd carbon path were confirmed to be affected by the flame temperature as well as the hydrocarbon fuel ratio.

  • We have designed a 20-residue hybrid peptide CA(1-8)-MA(1-12) (CAMA) incorporating residues 1-8 of cecropin A (CA) and residues 1-12 of magainin 2 (MA) with high bacterial cell selectivity. CAMA-P2 is an ${\alpha}$-helical antimicrobial peptide designed from a CAMA hybrid peptide and substitution of Gly-Ile-Gly hinge sequence of CAMA to Pro influences the flexibility at central part of CAMA. Based on structure-activity relationships of CAMA peptides, to investigate the effects of the total positive charges on antimicrobial activity of CAMA-P2, the $Ser^{14}{\rightarrow}$Lys analogue (CAMA-syn1) was synthesized. The role of tryptophan at C-terminal ${\alpha}$-helix on its antimicrobial activity as well as synergistic activity was also investigated using $Ser^{14}{\rightarrow}$Lys/$Phe^{18}{\rightarrow}$Trp analogue (CAMA-syn2). Also, we designed CAMA-syn3 by substitution of $Lys^{16}$ located opposite side of substituted $Lys^{14}$ of CAMA-syn1 with Leu residue, resulting in increase of hydrophobicity and amphipathicity of the peptide. All of CAMA-syn analogues showed good antimicrobial activities similar to those of CAMA and CAMA-P2. The CAMA-syn1 and CAMA-syn2 showed low hemolytic activity and cytotoxicity against human keratinocyte Haca-T cells while CAMA-syn3 showed hemolytic activity and cytotoxicity at its MIC value. We then investigated their abilities to act synergistically in combination with the antimicrobial flavonoids and synthetic compounds screened in our laboratory. The results showed that all peptides exhibited synergistic effects with dihydrobinetin, while only CAMA-syn2 exhibited synergistic effects with YKAs3001 against both S. aureus and MRSA, suggesting that Trp residue at C-terminus of CAMA-syn2 may facilitate the polar antibiotic flavonoids and synthetic compounds to permeabilize the membrane. This study will be useful for the development of new antibiotic peptides with potent antimicrobial and synergistic activity but without cytotoxicity.

  • Diesel particulate matter (DPM) induces inflammatory cytokines in HaCaT and stimulates XRE promoter activity through AhR binding. Thus, it increases CYP gene family expression. In this study, we have elucidated inhibitory effect of LG Herbal Medicine Complex (LG-HMC) on DPM-induced XRE promoter activity and inflammatory cytokine expression. First of all, the XRE promoter activity was overexpressed by DPM treatment and the LG-HMC abrogated the XRE promoter activity. Morus alba bark extract, Scutellaria baicalensis root extract and constituents of LG-HMC, were found to be main effecters against DPM induced XRE promoter activation. We also found that DPM treatment elevated inflammatory cytokines in HaCaT and the treatment of LG-HMC, Morus alba bark extract and Scutellaria baicalensis root extract down-regulated the DPM induced inflammatory cytokine expression. Additionally, Morus alba bark extract and Scutellaria baicalensis root extract were found to act as free radical scavengers. In conclusion, we confirmed skin protective effect of LG-HMC and uncovered two components, Morus alba bark extract and Scutellaria baicalensis root extract, that play major role in protecting epidermal kertinocytes from damage.
