  • Tubificid oligochaetes are common and frequently dominant in freshwater benthic habitats. They are so tolerant to water pollution that they are often used as biological indicators. Faunistic studies of Korean freshwater oligochaetes have been actively conducted recently. The most well studied oligochaete family in Korea is the tubificids following the naidids. Nine species of tubificids have been reported so far. Nevertheless, many species of tubificids still remain to be discovered in Korea. In this study, we added four species of tubificid oligochaetes to the Korean fauna, including Linmodrilus profundicola (Verrill, 1871), Potamothrix heuscheri (Bretscher, 1900), Tubifex blanchardi $Vejdovsk\acute{y}$, 1891, and Ilyodrilus templetoni (Southern, 1909) based on specimens collected from three locations in Korea: Cheonan-si, Geoje-si, and Seocheon-gun. In particular, P. heuscheri was first reported in Asia.

  • Endangered native plant habitats and populations are rapidly disappearing because of climate and environmental changes. As a representative, the abundance of the first-class endangered wild plant, Cypripedium japonicum, has been rapidly decreasing in Korea. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the distribution of rhizosphere and endophytic fungi on C. japonicum in its native habitat. A total of 440 rhizosphere and 79 endosphere fungi isolates were isolated and identified on the basis of their molecular characteristics. Sixty-five genera and 119 fungi species were identified in this study. The genus Trichoderma showed the highest abundance among both rhizosphere and endosphere fungi. Mortierella, Hypocrea, and Penicillium spp. were also relatively dominant species on C. japonicum. The community structures of rhizosphere and endosphere fungi were similar, but endosphere fungi showed greater diversity.

  • The abundance and local distribution of birds around the three atomic power plants were studied during summer in 1998 and winter 1989. It was particularly pointed out how to determine species diversity indices, rarefaction model appeared and habitat use. During the study over 2,200 birds were censused; black-tailed gull, terek sandpipper, asian wandering tattler and australian curlew accountedfor over 76% of the observed birds in summer. Black-tailed gull, black-headed gull, mallard, ancient murrelet and tree sparrow accounted for 76% of the observed birds in winter. overall, 53 species were occurred ; 23 have been observed on yonggwang-gun, 16 used on ulchin-gun, 12 used on kyungju-gun in summer. 18 on yonggwang-gun,,14 on ulchin-gun,12 on kyungju-gun in winter respectively. These three habitats in terms of their of species richness were computed as follows; yonggwang-gun has the highest richness with an expected species number of 17.5 as the same as two season. Kyungju-gun has the lowest with an expected species number of 8.2 in summer and 11.5 in winter.

  • Ten gastrotrich species belonging to family Chaetonotidae are recorded on the basis of the material from various freshwater bodies at 65 localities in South Korea: Polymerurus rhomboides (Stokes), P. nodicaudus (Voigt), Lepidodermella squamata (Dujardin), Chaetonotus (Zonochaeta) succinctus Voigt, C. (Z.) bisacer Greuter, C.(Euchaetonotus) polyspinosus Greuter, C.(E.) heterospinosus Balsamo, C.(E.) heideri Brehm, C.(E.) zelinkai Grunspan, and C.(Hystricochaetonotus) persetosus Zelinka. All the species are illustrated and briefly commented on their affinities and habitats, with a key to the ten species of Chaetonotidae from Korea. This is the first record on the freshwater gastrotrichs from Korea.

  • Diaphanosoma dubium Manuilova, frequently confused with the species group of D. brachyurum Lieven and misidentified as an invalid species of D. leuchtenber-gianum Fischer in the Far East, was redescribed and illustrated. Redescription was based on the materials collected from various freshwater habitats at 76 localities in South Korea during the period from May 1978 to June 1999. Previous records of Diaphanosoma species from Korea were examined. D. dubium is well distinguished from other related species by having large head, longer swimming antennae with a thin seta on the outer distal side of basipod, carapace lacking dorsal spine at the posterior carapace margin, and fewer denticles on the ventro-posterior carapace margin.

  • The rotifers collected from various terrestrial habitats, such as mosses, lichens, dry detritus and temporary pools after rain were investigated. Five species and/or subspecies in two families of digonont rotifers were identified: Rotaria tardigrada, Macrotrachela quadricornifera quadricornifera, Macrotrachela quadricornifera scutellata, Adineta vaga minor, Adineta steineri. All these are new to Korean fauna. This is the first taxonomic study on the Korean digonont rotifers.

  • A faunistic list and distribution of aquatic beetles were given with two newly records, Copelatus parallelus Zimmermann, 1920 (family Dytiscidae) and Scirtes sobrinus Lewis, 1895 (family Scirtidae) from Nohwa and Bogil islands in South Korea. As a result, a total of 30 species belonging to 24 genera and eight families were recognized: 12 Dytiscidae species, eight Hydrophilidae species, three Haliplidae species, two Scirtidae species, two Gyrinidae species, one Noteridae species, one Elmidae species, and one Psephenidae species. Composition and habitus photographs of all collected aquatic beetles, habitats, and the diagnostic characters of C. parallelus and S. sobrinus are provided.
