Convergence study of mechanical properties and biocompatability of Ti Gr4 surface coated with HA using plasma spray for ossoeintegration (골융합 촉진을 위한 Ti Gr4의 HA 코팅에 대한 물리적 특성과 생체안정성에 대한 융합적 연구)

  • This study aimed to investigate the efficient conduct of HA coating on Ti Gr4 for the practical use of medical device. Ti Gr4 alloy specimens measuring 𝜱 25mm × 1mm were sprayed with hydroxyapatite using thermal spray according to ASTM F1185-88. The surface was evaluated at #120, #400, #1,000 sandpaper and barrel finishing. Each coating properties was analyzed using SEM, UTS 20,000psi cap. and in vitro cytotoxicity. Surface morphology consists of well molten particles with very little resolidified or unmolten areas. The average Ca/P ratio is 1.74 which is in good agreement with theoretical value of 1.67. The average roughness Ra is very representative of roughness of specimen. The coatings are dense and well adhered to the substrate. The average bond strength was 61.74 MPa with a standard deviation of 4.06 which indicates fairly reliable results for ASTM 633 type tests. Variations in results from jig design, epoxy used, crosshead speeds etc. in vitro cytotoxicity result had a Grade 3. The results of the study are expected to be helpful in osseointegration and plasma-spray HA coated Ti Gr4 are more satisfactory in HA coating thickness elevation which is preferable to any other system.

Study on the Fouling Reduction of the RO Membrane by the Coating with an Anionic Polymer (역삼투막 표면에 음이온 고분자 코팅을 통한 파울링 현상 감소연구)

  • The anionic exchange polymer, poly(vinyl amine)(PVAm), was coated onto polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes by using 'salting-out' method. The effects of the fouling phenomena for these PVAm coated membranes were investigated using the model foulants, bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA), and sodium alginate (SA). The surface coating and the fouling phenomena were observed by the scanning electron microscopy. And the flux was measured for each 100 ppm of above foulant aqueous solution at the operating pressure, 2, 4, 8 bar. The PVAm-coated PA membranes showed somewhat fouling improvements and the fouling reduction was shown in the order of HA > SA > BSA, particularly HA case was distinct.

  • 마이크로플라즈마 스프레이(Microplasma spray, MPS)를 이용하여 hydroxyapatite(HA) 코팅을 수행하여, HA코팅 층에 대한 밀착력을 측정하였다. 밀착력의 측정은 ASTM C633에 의거하였으며, 실험의 설계는 다꾸치법 (L18($2^{1}3^{7}$))을 이용하였다. 본 실험에서 HA코팅 층과 모재에 대한 밀착력 측정에서 35.8MPa의 밀착력을 얻었으며, SEM을 이용하여, 표면 형상과 밀착력 실험 후의 파단면을 관찰하였다. 또한, 나노 인덴테이션을 사용하여, 탄성계수와 미소경도를 측정하였다.

The effect of different crystallization temperature of the hydroxyapatite coating produced by ion beam-assisted deposition on anodizing-treated titanium disks on human osteosarcoma cells (양극산화처리된 티타늄 표면에 이온빔보조증착방식을 이용한 수산화인회석 코팅시 소결온도의 차이가 조골세포에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to study the effect of hydroxyapatite (HA) coating crystallinity on the proliferation and differentiation of human osteosarcoma cells. Materials and methods: Surface roughness of the titanium disks increased by anodizing treatment and then HA was coated using ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD). HA coating was crystallized by heat-treated at different temperature ($100^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$). According to the temperature, disks were divided into four groups (HA100, HA300, HA500, HA800). With the temperature, crystallinity of the HA coating was different. Anodized disks were used as control group. The physical properties of the disk surface were evaluated by surface roughness tests, XRD tests and SEM. The effect of the crystallinity of HA coating on HOS cells was studied in proliferation and differentiation. HOS cells were cultured on the disks and evaluated after 1, 3, 5, and 7 days. Growth and differentiation kinetics were subsequently investigated by evaluating cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase activity. Results: Regardless of the heat-treated temperature, there is no difference on the surface roughness. Crystallinity of the HA was appeared in the groups of HA500, HA800. HOS cells proliferation, ALP activity were higher in HA500 and HA800 group than HA100 and HA300. Conclusion: Within the results of this limited study, heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ of HA coating produced by IBAD has shown greater effect on proliferation and differentiation of HOS cells. It is considered that further in vivo study will be necessary.

Studies on the Fouling Reduction by Coating of Cationic Exchange Polymer onto Reverse Osmosis Membrane Surfaces (역삼투막 표면의 양이온 교환 고분자 코팅에 의한 파울링 감소 연구)

  • The cation exchange polymer, poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA), was coated onto polyamide (PA) thin film composite reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. Then these membranes were investigated for the model foulants, bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA), and sodium alginate (SA) to check whether there are some improvement. The contact angle of PSSA coated PA RO membrane showed $58^{\circ}$ from $78^{\circ}$, the value of PA RO membrane, which confirmed successful hydrophilization. As the operating pressure increased (2, 4, 8 atm for BSA, HA and SA 100 ppm in feed solution), the fouling phenomena was worse for both none- and PSSA-coated membranes. The fouling increased in the order of BSA>SA>HA due to the interactions between sulfonic acid in PSSA and functional groups of foulants. On the other hand more significant fouling reduction was observed in the order of HA>SA>BSA. The photographs of scanning electron microscopy showed the same trend. As a result, there was the improvement of fouling phenomena for the PSSA coated RO membranes, distinctly in the case of HA.

Ultrasound-Triggered Drug Release of Hydroxyapatite Coated Liposomes (하이드록시아파타이트 코팅 리포솜의 초음파에 의한 약물방출)

  • Liposomes, which can deliver payload at target site, have been studied as drug carrier. However, conventional liposomes have limitation for drug release at target site. Therefore, we developed hydroxyapatite (HA) coated ultrasound sensitive liposomes to increase drug release at target site and to enhance stability in blood stream. Control liposome was prepared using hydrogenated soy phosphatidylcholine (HSPC) and cholesterol, and then we assessed HA coating on the surface of control liposomes using calcium acetate, phosphoric acid, and 25% ammonium solution. Doxorubicin was used as a model drug. Size of HA coated liposomes was 120 nm and encapsulation efficiency of doxorubicin in liposomes was up to 95%. Size of HA coated liposomes are not changed in 30% serum solution, however, the control liposomes was 1.4 fold increased. After ultrasound triggered drug release from liposomes, intracellular efficiency of drug released from HA coated liposomes was 3 fold increased compared to control liposomes. In this study, we developed ultrasound sensitive liposomes to enhance drug release, which will be applied in controlled drug release at disease site.

And then these membranes were investigated for the model foulants, bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA), and sodium alginate (SA) whether there are aome improvement. As the operating pressure increased with 2, 4, 8 atm for BSA, HA and SA 100 ppm in feed solution, the fouling phenomena was worse for both none and PSSA coated membranes. The fouling occurred in the sequence of BSA > HA > SA due to the interactions between PVA snd functional groups of foulants, and on the other hand the fouling reduction was observed in the order of HA > BSA > SA. The observation of scanning electron microscopy photographs showed the same trend. As a result, there should be the improvement of fouling phenomena for the PVA coated RO membranes and the case of HA was shown distinct.
