  • Since HiMSEN H21/32, a new medium speed diesel engine of Hyundai's own design, was introduced in 2001, Hyundai has added new models of H25/33 and H17/28 into HiMSEN engine family. These two new engines take after faithfully to the original HiMSEN concept of a PRACTICAL engine by Hi-Touch and Hi-Tech. The prototype of H25/33 was developed jointly with Rolls Royce Bergen originally and also introduced in 2001. But most of the engine design have been changed by Hyundai for the commercial versions to be a member of HiMSEN family, which has little interchangeability with the prototype. H17/28 is now under development as the smallest size of the family. This new engine also has the longest stroke of a class engine, which has been proven as the best basis for future environmental challenge. The higher compression ratio of 17 and optimized Miller Timing with Simplified pulse turbocharging system applied all HiMSEN engines as which showed the most practical solution against current heavy fuel combustion issues for the time being before introducing digital control system. This paper describes the design and development of these new HiMSEN engines and also reviews the service experiences of H21/32 and H25/33, which launched successfully.

  • The synthesis and characterization of intercalated compound of dodecanesulfornate into hydrated metal, [M($H_2$O)\ulcorner](C\ulcornerH\ulcorner$SO_3$)$_2$.$xH_2$O (M=Co, Cu) was presented. The compounds shows a layered structure which was determined by powder X-ray diffraction. Thermal behavior of the layered structure was investigated using thermal analysis, and FT-IR spectroscopy by varying the temperature. The increase in layer spacing of the products by increasing the temperature is also checked by X-ray diffraction. We can suggest three kinds of layered structure by varying the temperature, which is accompanied by changing the intercalated dodecanesulfonate from the monolayer to the bilayer structure or changing the tilt angle.

  • To determine the dental arch length and width in Korean yaung adults, various points (shown on Fig 1) were measured by means of Boley gauge on the 124 plaster models which obtained from 2 young men. The measurements value were as follows: A : 36.10㎜ a : 25.53㎜ B : 33.35㎜ b : 28.20㎜ C : 39.80㎜ c : 33.07㎜ D : 43.36㎜ d : 36.36㎜ E : 44.80㎜ e : 39.12㎜ F : 49.11㎜ f : 42.48㎜ G : 59.98㎜ g : 44.92㎜ H : 62.22㎜ h : 57.85㎜ I : 52.66㎜ i : 49.91㎜

  • The complete larval development of Enocheir japonicus De Haan reared in the laboratory is described and illustrated. E. japonicus passes through 5 zoeal stages before metamorphosis to the megalopal stage. The megalopa and crab I inStar are attained in 17 and 27 days after hatching, respectively. The culture was carried out under a photoperiod of 14 h light and 10 h dark and a constant temperature of $25^{\circ}C$. Morphological charaderistics of each larval stage of this species are compared with those of E. japonicus from Japan. Morphological features between zoea I of the Varuninae are briefly discussed.

  • The complete larval development of Hemigrapsus penicillatus(De Haan, 1835) from hatching to first crab stage was obtained by culture in the laboratory. Under culture conditions with salinity 33.3% , temperature $25^{\circ}C$, and photophase 14/10 h light/dark, the megalopa and the first crab instar were attained in minimum of 18 and 29 days after hatching respectively. Five zoeal stages and a megalopal stage are described and illustrated in detail. Morphological characters of H. penicillatus larvae were compared with those of other members within the subfamily Varuninae. Morphological differences among H. penicillatus, H. sanguineus and H. sinensis in megalopal stage are tabulated.

  • Eight strains of Bacillus thuringiensis were isolated from soil in Korea and characterized. The isolates were named HL-24, HL-25, HL-33, HL-34, HL-35, HL-38, HL-39, HL-40. Strains HL-24 and HL-25 produced irregular parasporal crystals, HL-33 and HL-35 produced bipyramidal crystals, and others were round form in their cells. The biochemical characteristics of the eight isolates were only minor different in specific characteristics to the known serotypes of Bacillus thuringiensis. The HL-25, HL-33 and HL-34 strains showed resistances to cephalothin, colistin and penicillin G, and HL-39 and HL-40 strains were resistant to penicilin G. The strains of HL-24, HL-25, HL-33 and HL-34 were toxic to Bombyx mori lavae and HL-24, HL-25, HL-38, HL-39 and HL-40 strains killed Culex pipiens 3rd instar larvae. The HL-24 and H25 strains showed lethal activity against two kinds of the larvae, however lethality against mosquito larvae was low.
