  • Although the method of seedling production of Haliotis discus hannai is well known, the optimum benthic diatom species as a live food at early larval stage are not fully developed. In this study three Pennales diatom species, Caloneis schroederi, Rhaphoneis sp., and Cocconeis californica were examined on settlement, metamorphosis, survival, and growth of Haliotis discus hannai larvae. The larvae fed Raphoneis sp. or C. californica showed high settlement rate with 80-82% within 48 hrs, which was significantly higher than those fed C. schroederi or mixed diets with three diatom species. The larvae fed the former microalgal species also showed higher metamorphosis rate with 32-34% than the latter species with 10-12% within 4 days. With regard to survival and growth of the larvae, single diet with Rhaphoneis sp. or C. californica had better dietary value than the mixed diets for the early larvae of H. discus hannai.

  • The relationship between dietary practices and juvenile delinquency was studied using a dietary survey. Subjects were selected from juvenile delinquents who were under the supervision of the Seoul Probation Office of the Ministry of Justice. The study group consisted of 52 male and 52 female delinquents. As a control group, 104 exemplary high school students were selected in Seoul. A questionnaire was designed to find out the subjects' general characteristics, dietary habits, lifestyle, eating behavior, food frequency, and nutrient intake using the 24-hour recall method. Compared to the exemplary students, the juvenile delinquents were significantly different in education level, family status, monthly allowance, residence status, breast fed, parents' education level, parents' concern. In dietary habits, fifty-eight percent of the juvenile delinquents ate 2 or fewer meals per day, preferred to eat with friends, and liked hot tasting foods. The juvenile delinquents consumed more ion drinks (OR = 9.26 CI: 3.83 -22.37), rameon (OR = 7.67 CI: 3.21 - 18.33), cola (OR = 6.75 CI: 2.91 - 15.69), soft drinks (OR = 6.12 CI: 2.53- 14.81), steamed korean sausage (OR = 5.34 CI:2.31 - 12.32), hamburger (OR = 5.15 CI: 1.91 - 13.87), kimbab (OR = 3.63 CI: 1.76-7.46), ddokbokgi (OR = 3.17 CI: 1.58-6.38), candy (OR = 3.08 CI: 1.41-6.73), white rice (OR = 2.59 CI: 1.19-5.64), hotdog (OR = 2.52 CI: 1.31-4.86), and less rice mixed with grains (OR = 0.02 CI: 0.01-0.05), tangerine (OR = 0.06 CI: 0.02 - 0.20), milk (OR = 0.29 CI: 0.14 - 0.60), roasted fish (OR = 0.32 CI: 0.28-0.99, anchovy (OR = 0.35 CI: 0.17 - 0.72), seaweed (OR = 0.37 CI: 0.16 - 0.83), and tofu (OR = 0.48 CI: 0.23-0.99) than the exemplary students. With respect to the juvenile delinquents, the nutrient intakes lower than 75% of the Korean RDA were for riboflavin (75.0%) and calcium (47.9%) among the boys, and calcium (46.9%) and iron (60.4%) among the girls. To prevent juvenile delinquency, nutritional education and well-balanced school food service meals should be emphasized so as to improve the management of dietary practices. • Gelatinization properties of crude starches from acorns harvested in various countries (domestic (KAS), Chinese (CAS), and North Korea (NAS)) were analyzed, especially blue value, amylose contents, amylogram, particle size, and SEM (scanning electron microscope). Amylose contents of NAS, KAS, and CAS were 33.65%, 32.00%, and 30.48%, respectively, and a similar tendency was observed in blue value. According to amylogram, initial paste temperature was $72^{\circ}C$ for NAS and CAS and $71^{\circ}C$ for KAS, whereas peak viscosity was 580 BU for KAS and NAS and 570 BU for CAS. The cooling viscosity and setback of NAS and CAS were higher than those of KAS. The average particle size was 23.17 microns for KAS, 23.53 microns for CAS, and 82.14 microns for NAS; particle size ranging from 5~40 microns was highly distributed in KAS (68.9%) and CAS (73.8%), whereas 57.1% distribution was observed for 5~40 microns and 27.2% for >80 microns in NAS. Gelatinization ranges of SEM photography of CAS and NAS showed a more swollen, extremely disintegrated, and folded structure than that of KAS. From these results, gelatinization properties, especially viscosity, setback of amylogram, particle size, and SEM photography, differed according to the country.

  • This study was carried out to estimate the aboveground biomass of Cryptomeria japonica and Chamaecyparis obtusa which was planted in Changsong district, the southern part of the Korean peninsula. Nine sample trees at each plot(20m x 20m drom C. japonica of 20-year-old and C. obtusa of 25-year-old, according to DBH distribution. were felled to measure the dry weights of stem, branches and leaves sectioned respectively. Since it is very difficult to separate leaves from twigs. all green parts including pure leaves and twigs were tentatively treated as 'leaves'. 1. The logarithmic regression equations between dry weight of each component (stem. branches. leaves land the variable of $(DBH)^2{\cdot}H$ were obtained (Table 6). The aboveground standing crops was estimated 108. 75ton/ha in C. japonica and 112.56 ton/ha in C. obtusa. Percentage of each part based on the aboveground standing crop in stand was and in order of stem >leaves>branches for C. japonica and in order of stem> branches> leaves for C. obtusa repectively. 2. Net production of each stand was estimated as 1:3.32ton/ha/yr in C. japonica and 11.69ton/ha/yr in C. obtusa. and its composition was in order of stem>leaves>branches for both species. 3The net assimilation rate was estimated as 1.10 and 1.2lkg/kg/yr, the efficiency of leaves to produce stem was 0.71 and 0.75 kg/kg/ha and biomass accumulation ratio was 8.16 and 9.63kg/kg/yr in each stand of C. japonica and C. obtusa respectively.

  • The study was carried out to find the effect of freeze drying on the volatile organic components in garlic (Allium sativum L.). The volatile organic compounds from fresh and freeze dried garlic were extracted by simultaneous steam distillation and extraction (SDE) method and identified with GC/MS analysis. A total of 42 and 32 compounds were identified in fresh and freeze-dried garlic, respectively. Sulfur containing compounds in the garlic samples were detected as the major compounds, and alcohols, aldehydes and esters were detected as minor compounds. Diallyl disulfide, diallyl trisulfide, allyl methyl disulfide and ally1 methyl trisulfide were the main sulfur compounds in fresh and freeze dried garlic. The amount of sulfur containing compounds were decreased freeze-drying but methyl propyl trisulide, 3- allylthiopropionic acid, cyclopentyl ethyl sulfide etc. were increased. The others, non- sulfur containing compounds such as ethyl acetate, ethanol, 2-propenol, 2- propenal and hexanal were increased in freeze-dried garlic. Consequently, the total amount of volatile organic compounds in garlic became lower during freeze-drying from 853.42 mg/kg to 802.21 /kg, and the composition of major components were nearly same in fresh and freeze-dried garlic.

  • Cimetropium bromide, a quaternary ammonium compound which is chemically related to scopolamine, exhibits its antispasmodic activity by competing with acetylcholine for the muscarinic receptors of the smooth muscle of gastrointestinal tract. The drug has been used for the treatment of various disorders involving spasms of the musculature of the gastrointestinal, biliary and genitourinary tracts. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the bioequivalence of two cimetropium bromide tablets, $Algiron^{TM}$ (Boehringer Ingelheim Korea Ltd.) and $Alpit^{TM}$ (Hana Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.), according to the prior and revised guidelines of Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). The cimetropium bromide release from the two cimetropium bromide tablets in vitro was tested using KP VII Apparatus II method with various different kinds of dissolution media (pH 1.2, 4.0, 6.8 buffer solution and water). Twenty normal male volunteers, $25.25{\pm}2.10$ years in age and $65.76{\pm}6.39$ kg in body weight, were divided into two groups and a randomized $2{\times}2$ cross-over study was employed. After three tablets containing 50 mg of cimetropium bromide per tablet were orally administered, blood was taken at predetermined time intervals and the concentrations of cimetropium bromide in serum were determined using HPLC method with UV detector. The dissolution profiles of two cimetropium bromide tablets were very similar at all dissolution media. Besides, the pharmacokinetic parameters such as $AUC_t,\;C_{max}\;and\;T_{max}$ were calculated and ANOVA test was utilized for the statistical analysis of the parameters using non-transformed and logarithmically transformed $AUC_t\;and\;C_{max}$. The results showed that the differences in $AUC_t,\;C_{max}\;and\;T_{max}$ between two tablets based on the $Algiron^{TM}$ were 2.19%, -5.97% and 3.49%, respectively. Minimum detectable differences $({\Delta})\;at \;{\alpha}=0.05\;and\;1-{\beta}=0.8$ were less than 20% (e.g., 13.71 %, 19.05% and 15.11% for $AUC_t,\;C_{max}\;and\;T_{max}$, respectively). The powers $(1-{\beta})\;at\;{\alpha}=0.05,\;{\Delta}=0.2\;for\;AUC_t$, $C_{max}\;and\;T_{max}$ were 97.79%, 83.22% and 95.60%, respectively. The 90% confidence intervals were within ${\pm}20%$ (e.g., $-5.84{\sim}10.21,\;-17.11{\sim}5.18\;and\;-5.35{\sim}12.33\;for\;AUC_t,\;C_{max}\;and\;T_{max}$, respectively). There were no sequence effect between two tablets in logarithmically transformed $AUC_t\;and\;C_{max}$. The 90% confidence intervals using logarithmically transformed data were within the acceptance range of log(0.8) to log(1.25) (e.g., $0.94{\sim}1.10\;and\;0.85{\sim}1.05\;for\;AUC_t\;and\;C_{max}$, respectively). Two parameters met the criteria of prior and revised KFDA guideline for bioequivalence, indicating that $Alpit^{TM}$ tablet is bioequivalent to $Algiron^{TM}$ tablet.

  • The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the quality characteristics of Brassica juncea cultivated in Jeongseon (BJJ), South Korea. We analyzed the nutritional components and antioxidant activity of BJJ. As a result of the free sugar analysis, the contents of glucose and fructose in BJJ were $0.29{\pm}0.02g/100g$ and $0.10{\pm}0.00g/100g$, respectively. The major fatty acids were palmitic acid, octadecenoic acid and stearic acid. The palmitic acid was the highest at 31.22% of all fatty acids. The major minerals were identified as Ca, P, K, Mg and Na. The contents of vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$, vitamin $B_6$, vitamin C and vitamin E in BJJ were $0.02{\pm}0.00mg/100g$, $0.087{\pm}0.01mg/100g$, $0.02{\pm}0.00mg/100g$, $0.56{\pm}0.06mg/100g$ and $0.20{\pm}0.03mg\;{\alpha}-TE/100g$, respectively. As a result of the free amino acid analysis, total amino acid contents in BJJ were $2,801.21{\pm}115.38mg/100g$. L-proline content was the highest ($744.30{\pm}119.06mg/100g$) in BJJ. BJJ extract inhibits reactive oxygen species production in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Also, BJJ extract exhibits a protective effect on oxidative stress in $H_2O_2$-induced human dermal fibroblast. These results indicate that BJJ comprises various valuable nutrients which can be used as functional food ingredients.

  • This experiment was carried out using artificial bed soil and LED in the plastic film house(irradiation time: 07:00-17:00/day). Seedlings(n=63 per 3.3 m2) of ginseng was planted on May 17, 2018. LED was combined with red and blue light in a 3:1 ratio and irradiated with different light intensity(40-160 µmol/m2/s). Average air temperature from April to September according to the light intensity test was 20.4℃-20.9℃. Average artificial bed soil temperature was 20.1℃-21.7℃. The test area where fluorescent lamp was irradiated tended to be somewhat lower than the LED irradiation area. The chemical properties of the test soil was as follows. pH levels was 6.6-6.7, EC levels 0.9-1.3 dS/m and OM levels 30.6-32.0%. The available P2O5 contents was 73.3-302.3 mg/kg. Exchangeable cations K and Ca contents were higher than the allowable ranges and mg content was high in the fluorescent lamp treatment. The photometric characteristics of LED light intensity are as follows. The greater the light intensity, the higher the PPFD(Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) value, illuminance and solar irradiation. Fluorescent lamp treatment had high illuminance value, but PPFD and solar irradiation were lower than LED intensity 40 µmol/m2/s treatment. The photosynthetic rate increased(2.0-3.8 µmolCO2/m2/s) as the amount of light intensity increased, peaking at 120 µmol/m2/s, and then decreasing. The SPAD (chlorophyll content) value decreased as the amount of light intensity increased, and was the highest at 36.1 in fluorescent lamp treatment. Ginseng germination started on April 5 and took 14-17 days to germinate. The overall germination rate was 68.8-73.6%. The growth of aerial parts(plant height etc.) were generally excellent in the treatment of light intensity of 120-160 µmol/m2/s. The plant height was 41.9 cm, stem length was 24.1 cm, leaf length was 9.8 cm and stem diameter was 5.6 mm. The growth of underground part (root length etc.) was the best in the treatment with 120 µmol/m2/s of light intensity. Due to the root length was long(24.8 cm) and diameter of taproot was thick(18.7 mm), the fresh root weight was the heaviest at 24.8 g. There were no disease incidence such as Alternaria blight, Gray mold and Anthracnose. Disease of Damping-off caused by Rhizoctonia solani occurred 0.6-1.5% and incidence ratio of rusty root ginseng was 30.8-62.3%. It is believed that the reason for the high incidence of rusty root ginseng is that the amount of field moisture capacity of artificial bed soil is larger than the soil. Leaf discoloration rate was 13.7-32.3%.
