Unification of Buck-boost and Flyback Converter for Driving Cascaded H-bridge Multilevel Inverter with Single Independent DC Voltage Source

  • It presents a unification of buck-boost and flyback converter for driving a cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter with a single independent DC voltage source. Cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter is useful to make many output voltage levels for sinusoidal waveform by combining two or more H-bridge modules. However, each H-bridge module needs an independent DC voltage source to generate multi levels in an output voltage. This topological characteristic brings a demerit of increasing the number of independent DC voltage sources when it needs to increase the number of output voltage levels. To solve this problem, we propose a converter combining a buck-boost converter with a flyback converter. The proposed converter provides independent DC voltage sources at back-end two H-bridge modules. After analyzing theoretical operation of the circuit topology, the validity of the proposed approach is verified by computer-aided simulations using PSIM and experiments.

  • A simple and practical voltage balance method for a solid-state transformer (SST) is proposed to reduce the voltage difference of cascaded H-bridge converters. The tolerance device components in SST cause the imbalance problem of DC-link voltage in the H-bridge converter. The Max/Min algorithms of voltage balance controller are merged in the controller of an AC/DC rectifier to reduce the voltage difference. The DC-link voltage through each H-bridge converter can be balanced with the proposed control methods. The design and performance of the proposed SST are verified by experimental results using a 30 kW prototype.

  • ZVS Half-Bridge converter is proposed. This converter is operating in fixed switching frequency to regulate output voltage. The ZVS is maintained by Partial resonance during the OFF interval of both switches. Using self-driven synchronous rectifier, this circuit minimizes the Power loss in the rectification circuit. 50[W] ZVS Half-Bridge converter is simulated and built. Two results has been compared.

  • Multi-level converter that is high-capacity electric power conversion system is used widely to electric motor drive system and FATCs(Flexible AC Transmission Systems). H-Bridge converter has been prevalently applied to shunt-type system because it can be easily expanded to the multi-level. In steady states, converter is normally operated in the range of 0.7∼0.8 of modulation Index. Even though zero vectors are not imposed to high modulation index, DC-Link voltage Is constant. It means that converter has another boost vector except for zero vectors among several vectors in 3-level converter. This paper has examined the principle of boost vector and investigated the difference between another boost vector and zero vectors in 3-level converter. In addition, this paper has analysed and compared the charging currents and the capacitor voltages of two topologies. The currents and voltages are related to reference voltage. Therefore, it proposed the calculation method for the voltage ripple and the charging current of each capacitor and compared various DC-Link voltage control methods through the simulation.

  • In this paper, the implementation of proposed Automatic Load Balanced (ALB) PWM generation method is discussed. The conventional PWM generation method for cascade type H-bridge PWM converter causes the unbalance between each H-bridge converter, therefore the complex redundancy is required for the balancing of switching load of each converter, it consumes more computing power of controller. The ALB PWM method needs no additional switching redundancy for balancing, this paper discusses the implementation of ALB-PWM.

  • We considered of the buck and half bridge series DC-DC converter. It has good applications in areas with low voltage/high current, wide input voltage. The buck converter ratings and the half bridge converter ratings are $36\~72V$ input and 22V/5A output, $19\~24V$ input and 3.3V/30A output, respectively. Developed the buck and half Bridge series DC-DC converter ratings are of $36\~72V$ input and 3.3V/30A output. The buck converter is operated with zero voltage switching process to reduce the switching losses. The $80.1\%\~97.6\%$ of the efficiency is measured at $18.4{\mu}H$ output filter inductance of buck converter. In the half bridge converter, the $86\%\~96.4\%$ efficiency is measured at 150kHz switching frequency with PQI core. In the case of synchronized the buck and half bridge DC-DC converter, the measured efficiency is higher than that of the unsynchronized converter. In the synchronized converter, the maximum efficiency is measured up to $92.3\%$ with PQI core at 150kHz. 7A output.

A Novel Modulation Scheme and a DC-Link Voltage Balancing Control Strategy for T-Type H-Bridge Cascaded Multilevel Converters

  • The cascaded multilevel converter is widely adopted to medium/high voltage and high power electronic applications due to the small harmonic components of the output voltage and the facilitation of modularity. In this paper, the operation principle of a T-type H-bridge topology is investigated in detail, and a carrier phase shifted pulse width modulation (CPS-PWM) based control method is proposed for this topology. Taking a virtual five-level waveform achieved by a unipolar double frequency CPS-PWM as the output object, PWM signals of the T-type H-bridge can be obtained by reverse derivation according to its switching modes. In addition, a control method for the T-type H-bridge based cascaded multilevel converter is introduced. Then a single-phase T-type H-bridge cascaded multilevel static var generator (SVG) prototype is built, and a repetitive controller based compound current control strategy is designed with the DC-link voltage balancing control scheme analyzed. Finally, simulation and experimental results validate the correctness and feasibility of the proposed modulation method and control strategy for T-type H-bridge based cascaded multilevel converters.

  • A new class of zero-voltage switching (ZVS) pulse width modulated (PWM) half-bridge converter is investigated. The new converter is capable of switching zero voltage and keeping advantages of quasi-resonant half-bridge converter while maintaining constant frequency operation. The theoretical analysis of a ZVS PWM half bridge converter is presented and is verified by PSPICE simulation results.

  • This paper proposes the structure of a smart transformer to improve the performance of the 60Hz main power transformer for rolling stock. The proposed smart transformer is a kind of solid state transformer that consists of semiconductor switching devices and high frequency transformers. This smart transformer would have smaller size than the conventional 60Hz main transformer for rolling stock, making it possible to operate AC electrified track efficiently by power factor control. The proposed structure employs a cascade H-Bridge converter to interface with the high voltage AC single phase grid as the rectifier part. Each H-Bridge converter in the rectifier part is connected by a Dual-Active-Bridge (DAB) converter to generate an isolated low voltage DC output source of the system. Because the AC voltage in the train system is a kind of medium voltage, the number of the modules would be several tens. To control the entire smart transformer, the inner DC voltage of the modules, the AC input current, and the output DC voltage must be controlled instantaneously. In this paper, a control algorithm to operate the proposed structure is suggested and confirmed through computer simulation.

  • Cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter requires independent DC voltage sources to produce multi output voltage levels. When it needs to generate more levels in the output voltage wave, the number of independent DC voltage sources usually limits its extension. To solve this problem, we propose a cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter employing a front-end flyback converter for unifying input DC voltage sources. After theoretical analysis of the proposed circuit, we verify the validity of the proposed inverter using computer-aided simulations and experiments.
