  • NaX zeolite crystals of a uniform particle size of 50 $\mu$m were grown by continuous crystallization method from seed crystals (10~20 $\mu$m) added into a 0.5~2.0 g mother liquor having a composition $3.5Na_2O : Al_2O_3: 2.1SiO_2: 1000H_2O$. In order to investigate the crystal growing by continuous method, the mother solution was supplied after 7 days, 5 days, 3 days and 1 day, respectively. The seeding resulted in an increase in the fraction of large crystals compared with unseeded batches and successfully led to an uniform NaX zeolite crystal. It was postulated that the seeding in the synthesis mixture leaded out increase of surface area for physical contact reaction and directed growth of seed crystal without the nucleation in the synthesis gel.

  • This study focused on the development of effective adsorbent to remove acetylenes for the purification of isoprene. The adsorbents with various pore sizes from $4{\AA}$ to $5{\AA}$ were prepared to investigate the effect of pore size on selective adsorption of acetylene as an impurity. The pore size of zeolite A was adjusted by ion-exchange between Na and Ca ions. The pore size of adsorbents has affected the removal of acetylenes selectively because of the kinetic diameter of acetylenes, such as 2-methyl-1-butyne-3-yen (IPA) and 2-butyne. In a batch adsorption experiment, 5A zeolite with pore size of $5{\AA}$ showed the highest removal capacity of 2-butyne. However, IPA was hardly removed from isoprene by the A-type zeolites. For the adsorption isotherm, modified Langmuir model was well fitted with 2-butyne adsorption. Moreover, the regeneration of adsorbent was carried out to determine optimum method. The adsorbent heated for 12 h at $300^{\circ}C$ was regenerated significantly.

  • Malachite green is used a dye but malachite green is harmful toxic substance. In this study, the adsorption characteristics of zeolite has been investigated for the adsorption of malachite green dissolved in water. The effects of initial dye concentration, contact time, pH and temperature on adsorption of malachite green by a fixed amount of zeolite have been studied in batch adsorber and fixed bed. The adsorption equilibrium data are successfully fitted to the Freundlich isotherm equation in the temperature range from 25 to $45^{\circ}C$. The estimated values of k and ${\beta}$ are 23.60-46.88, 0.225-0.347, respectively. The mechanism of the adsorption process was determined from the intraparticle diffusion model. The effects of the operation conditions of the fixed bed on the breakthrough curve were investigated. When the inlet concentration and initial flow rate of malachite green are increased, the corresponding adsorption breaktime appears to decrease. Breaktime increased with increasing bed height and length of adsorption zone showed similar patterns.

  • In developing of soil wetting agents using the mixture of polyoxyethylene octylphenyl ether [$C_8H_{17}O$ $(C_2H_4O)_{10}H$, POE] and polyoxyethylene+polypropyleneoxide tridecylether (1:1, w/w, CM-1), the effect of base carriers such as zeolite and vermiculite on changes of concentration of POE and on initial wetting of peat-vermiculite media were determined. The concentration of POE in the treatment of zeolite was higher than that of vermiculite. The treatments of POE+CM-1 with zeolite or vermiculite as carrier were effective in initial water retention of root media having about 510 mL of water per pot, where those of AquaGro and control had 490 mL and 400 mL of water per pot, respectively. In the evaporative water loss, the treatment of zeolite and AquaGro were faster than those of control and vermiculite. The treatment of AquaGro had faster water movement in root media than those of POE+CM-1 regardless of carriers and same trends were observed in the volume of water infiltrating into root media. Also, increasing the amount of POE+CM-1 resulted in increased water retention capacity, evaporative water loss, water movement in root media and amount of water infiltrating into root media.

  • Methanol dehydration to dimethyl ether (DME) has been investigated over ZSM-5 zeolites and compared with that of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. Although the catalytic activity was decreased with an increase in silica/alumina ratio, the DME selectivity increased. H-ZSM-5 and NaH-ZSM-5 zeolites were more active for conversion of methanol to DME than ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. $Na^+$ ion-exchanged H-ZSM-5 (NaH-ZSM-5) shows higher DME selectivity than H-ZSM-5 due to the selective removal of strong acid sites.

  • The feasibility of commercializing the hydrothermal synthesis of Na-A type zeolite from siliceous mudstone has been conducted using a 50-liter bench-scale autoclave and the application of the zeolite as an environmental remediation agent. Siliceous mudstone, which is widely distributed around the Pohang area, was adopted as a precursor. The siliceous mudstone is favorable for the synthesis of zeolite because it contains 70.7% $SiO_2$ and 10.0% $Al_2O_3$, which are major ingredient of zeolite formation. The synthesis of zeolite was carried out under the following conditions that had been obtained from the previous laboratory-scale tests: 10hr reaction time, $80^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature, $Na_2O/SiO_2$ ratio = 0.6, $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio = 2.0 and $H_2O/Na_2O$ ratio= 98.6. The crystallinity and morphology of the zeolite formed were similar to those obtained from the laboratory-scale tests. The recovery and cation exchange ion capacity were 95% and 215 cmol/kg, respectively, which are slightly higher than those obtained in laboratory scale tests. To examine the feasibility of the zeolite as an environmental remediation agent, experiments for heavy metal adsorption to zeolite were conducted. Its removal efficiencies of heavy metals in simulated waste solutions decreased in the following sequences: Pb > Cd > Cu = Zn > Mn. In a solution of 1500 mg/L total impurity metals, the removal efficiencies for these impurity metals were near completion (> 99%) except for Mn whose efficiency was 98%. Therefore, the synthetic Na-A type zeolite was proven to be a strong absorbent effective for removing heavy metals.

  • This study was performed to synthesize Na-A type zeolite with melting slag from the Mapo incineration site and recycle the zeolite as an environmental remediation agent. The melting slag used had a favorable composition containing 26.6% $SiO_2$, 10.9% $Al_2O_3$ and 2.7% $Na_2O$ for zeolite synthesis although there were high contents of iron oxides, including 19.6% $Fe_2O_3$ and 18.9% FeO, which had been used as a flux for the melting. It was confirmed that the Na-A type zeolite could be successfully synthesized at $80^{\circ}C$ and $SiO_2/Al_2O_3\;=\;0.80{\sim}1.96$. The cation exchange capacities (CEC) of the zeolites was determined to be about 220 cmol/kg leveled off at the synthetic time more than 10hrs. The adsorption capacities of zeolite to heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Mn and Pb) were high except for As arid Cr. It was also confirmed through the Eh and pH analysis that As and Cr existed in the forms of $HAsO_4^{2-}$ and $CrO_4^{2-}$. The low absorption rates of zeolite for As and Cr are attributed to the fact that the pore size ($4\;{\AA}$) of Na-A type is smaller than those of $HAsO_4^{2-}$ and $CrO_4^{2-}$ ions ($4\;{\AA}$ ionic radii and $8\;{\AA}$ diameter).

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the mixed ratio of the soil amendments, peat, humate, peatmoss and zeolite, on the soil physicochemical properties. The mixed ratios of soil amendments were 0%, 3%, 5%, 7% and 10% (v/v) incorporated with sand which met to the USGA (United State of Golf Association) recommendation. It was measured pH, EC and CEC as a chemical properties. Porosity, capillary porosity, air-filled porosity, bulk density and hydraulic conductivity were also measured to analyze the changes of physical properties. Chemical properties were significantly different by mixture ratios of peat, humate, peatmoss and zeolite. When the results were applied to the USGA standard of the soil physical properties, the optimum mixture ratios of peat, humate and peatmoss were 5%, 3% and 7%, respectively. Air-filled porosity was factor involved in soil physical properties by blending with soil amendments and it was affected on volume of porosity and hydraulic conductivity. To analyze the corelation of mixture ratio versus to physical characters, the ratio of peat and peatmoss was significantly related to capillary porosity and hydraulic conductivity (P<0.05), that of humate hydraulic conductivity (P<0.01), and that of zeolite air-filled porosity and volume of porosity (P<0.05). These results could be used as a basic data for construction USGA sand green.

  • The paper includes utlization of zeolite as potential adsorbent to remove a hazardous malachite green from waste water. The adsorption studies were carried out at 298, 308 and 318 K and effects of temperature, contact time, initial concentration on the adsorption were measured. On the basis of adsorption data Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model were also confirmed. The equilibrium process was described well by Freundlich isotherm model, showing a selective adsorption by irregular energy of zeolite surface. From determined isotherm constants, zeolite could be employed as effective treatment for removal of malachite green. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process followed the pseudo second order model, and the adsorption rate constant ($k_2$) decreased with increasing initial concentration of malachite green. Thermodynamic parameters like activation energy, change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature adsorption. The activation energy calculated from Arrhenius equation indicated that the adsorption of malachite green on the zeolite was physical process. The negative free energy change (${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ =-6.47~-9.07 kJ/mol) and the positive enthalpy change (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$ = +32.414 kJ/mol) indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption in the temperature range 298~318 K.
