Influence of Surface area, Surface Chemical Structure and Solution pH on the Adsorption of Pb(II) Ions on Activated Carbons

  • The influence of carbon surface area, carbon-oxygen groups associated with the carbon surface and the solution pH on the adsorption of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions has been studied using three activated carbons. The adsorption isotherms are Type I of BET classification and the data obeys Langmuir adsorption equation. The BET surface area has little effect on the adsorption while it is strongly influenced by the presence of acidic carbon oxygen surface groups. The amount of these surface groups was enhanced by oxidation of the carbons with different oxidizing agents and reduced by eliminating these groups on degassing at different temperatures. The adsorption of Pb(II) ions increases on each oxidation and decreases on degassing the oxidized carbons. The increase in adsorption on oxidation has been attributed to the formation of acidic carbon-oxygen surface groups and the decrease to the elimination of these acidic surface groups on degassing. The adsorption is also influenced by the pH of the aqueous solution. The adsorption is only small at pH values lower than 3 but is considerably larger at higher pH values. Suitable mechanisms consistent with the adsorption data have been suggested.

Modified Activated Carbons from Olive Stones for the Removal of Heavy Metals

  • The activated carbon "C" was obtained by carbonization followed by activation with steam at 40% of burn-off. Oxidized carbons C-N, C-P and C-H were obtained by oxidizing the activated carbon C with concentrated nitric acid, ammonium peroxysulfate and hydrogen peroxide, respectively. The textural properties of the carbons were determined from nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. The acidic surface functional groups were determined by pH titration, base neutralization capacity and electrophoretic mobility measurements. The cation exchange capacities of un-oxidized and oxidized carbons were determined by the removal of Cu(II) and Ni(II) from their aqueous solutions. The surface area and the total pore volume decreased but the pore radius increased by the treatment of activated carbon with oxidizing agents. These changes were more pronounced in case of oxidation with $HNO_3$. The surface pH of un-oxidized carbon was basic whereas those of the oxidized derivative were acidic. The removal of Cu(II) and Ni(II) was pH dependent and the maximum removal of the both ions was obtained at pH of 5-6. Cu(II) was more adsorbed, a phenomenon which was ascribed to its particular electronic configuration.

한반도 중부 동해안 정동진, 대진지역의 해안단구 지형발달 (Geomorphic Development of Marine Terraces at Jeongdongjin-Daejin area on the East Coast, Central Part of Korean Peninsula)

  • 정동진, 대진 지역에는 규모가 큰 해안단구 고위면이 형성되어 있을 뿐 아니라. 우리나라 중부 동해안에서 처음으로 구정선고도의 해발고도가 고위면보다 높은 고고위면이 확인되었다. 해안단구의 구정선고도는 고고위 I면(HH I) 해발고도 140m. 고고위 II교면(HH II) 110m, 고위 I면 90m, 고위 II면 70m, 중위면 40m, 저위 I면 25m, 저위 II면dl 10m이다. 그리고 홀로세에 형성된 것으로 추정되는 해발고도 5~6m의 가장 낮은 해안단구가 연구지역 전체에서 나타난다. 고고위면은 인근의 삼척 오십천 해면변동단구와 남동해안 감포지역에서 확인되는 고고위 면과 같은 시기에 형성된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이것은 연구 지역의 해안단구 형성체계가 이들 지역의 그것과 거의 같은 데서 추론할 수 있다. 해안단구 형성시기는 최종간빙기인 MIS 5시기로 확인된 저위 I면을 단서로 중위면은 MIS 7. 고위 II면은 MIS 9, 고위 I면은 MIS 11로 판단된다. 고고위 II면은 산소동위체 MIS 13, 고고위 I면은 산소 동위체 MIS 15에 형성되었을 것이다. 고위면이 한반도 남동부 지역과 유사하게 큰 규모로 남아있는 것은 이것을 형성한 Holsteinian Interglacial의 기간이 매우 길고, 이 시기의 해면 위치에 기반암의 완사면이 넓게 형성되어 있었으므로 파식대가 비교적 용이하게 만들어진데 기인하는 것으로 생각된다.

무정형 알루미나에서의 Ni(II), Co(II), Sr(II) 흡착의 표면착물 모델링 (Surface Complexation Modeling of Ni(II), Co(II), and Sr(II) Adsorption on Amorphous Alumina)

  • 일정한 이온강도(0.1M)에서 알루미나에 의한 Ni(II), Co(II), Sr(II) 및 Cs(I)의 흡착거동을 세 가지의 금속이온 농도를 사용하여 pH를 변화시키면서 관찰하였다. 금속 이온의 농도가 증가할수록 흡착률은 감소했으며 흡착변곡점이 보다 높은 pH쪽으로 이동하였다. 금속 이 온의 농도가 $1.0{\times}10^{-4}$M인 조건에서 측정한 흡착데이터로부터 표면착물 모델을 적용하여 각 금속의 흡착종에 대한 고유의 흡착상수 값을결정하였다. 흡착 세기는 Co(II)>Ni(II)>Sr(II)순으로 감소하였으며 Cs(I)는 흡착이 되지 않았다. 높은 pH에서의 Co(II)와 Ni(II)의 흡착성이 대부분이 가수분해된 형태로 존재하였다.

SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS AND BIOLOGICAL RESPONSES OF HYDROXYAPATITE COATING ON TITANIUM BY HYDROTHERMAL METHOD: AN IN VITRO STUDY

  • Statement of problem. Hydroxyapatite(HA) coated titanium surfaces have not yet showed the reliable osseointegration in various conditions. Purpose. This study was aimed to investigate microstructures, chemical composition, and surface roughness of the surface coated by the hydrothermal method and to evaluate the effect of hydrothermal coating on the cell attachment, as well as cell proliferation. Material and Methods. Commercially pure(c.p.) titanium discs were used as substrates. The HA coating on c.p. titanium discs by hydrothermal method was performed in 0.12M HCl solution mixed with HA(group I) and 0.1M NaOH solution mixed with HA(group II). GroupⅠ was heated at 180 $^{\circ}C$ for 24, 48, and 72 hours. GroupⅡ was heated at 180 $^{\circ}C$ for 12, 24, and 36 hours. And the treated surfaces were evaluated by Scanning electron microscopy(SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), X-ray diffraction method(XRD), Confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM). And SEM of fibroblast and 3-(4,5- dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay were used for cellular responses of the treated surfaces. Results. The color of surface changed in both groups after the hydrothermal process. SEM images showed that coating pattern was homogeneous in group II, while inhomogeneous in group I. H72 had rosette-like precipitates. The crystalline structure grew gradually in group II, according to extending treatment period. The long needle-like crystals were prominent in N36. Calcium(Ca) and phosphorus(P) were not detected in H24 and H48 in EDS. In all specimens of group II and H72, Ca was found. Ca and P were identified in all treated groups through the analysis of XPS, but they were amorphous. Surface roughness did not increase in both groups after hydrothermal treatment. The values of surface roughness were not significantly different between groups I and II. According to the SEM images of fibroblasts, cell attachments were oriented and spread well in both treated groups, while they were not in the control group. However, no substantial amount of difference was found between groups I and II. Conclusions. In this study during the hydrothermal process procedure, coating characteristics, including the HA precipitates, crystal growth, and crystalline phases, were more satisfactory in NaOH treated group than in HCl treated group. Still, the biological responses of the modified surface by this method were not fully understood for the two tested groups did not differ significantly. Therefore, more continuous research on the relationship between the surface features and cellular responses seems to be in need.

황토로부터 합성한 제올라이트에 의한 Cd(II) 및 Cu(II) 흡착특성 (Adsorption Characteristics of Cd(II) and Cu(II) by Zeolites Synthesized from Hwangto)

  • Various kinds of zeolites, such as analcime (ANA), cancrinite (CAN), Na-Pl and sodalite octahydrate (SOD) could be synthesized from Hwangto by hydrothermal reaction in a high-pressure vessel. The adsorption characteristics of Cu(II) and Cd(II) by Hwangto and its synthetic zeolites were investigated using the chemical and electrochemical surface parameters of these adsorbents. The heavy metal adsorptivity among the adsorbents decreased in the following sequences: Na-Pl > SOD > ANA > CAN > Hwangto. This sequence was the same with the values of surface site density (Ns) of these adsorbents and was correlated inversely with the values of pHpzc (pH of the point of zero charge) and the va]ues of K$\_$a2/(int) (intrinsic surface deprotonation constant) of the adsorbents for synthetic zeolites, i.e., the adsorbents with higher values of Ns and with lower values of pHpzc and K$\_$a2/(int) for synthetic zeolites showed higher heavy metal adsorptivity. With increasing pH, the heavy metal adsorptivity increased greatly between pHpzc and pH 6 or 7 because of the steep increase of negatively charged sites for synthetic zeolites, but for Hwangto, it increased broadly because of slow increase of negatively charged sites based on its lower surface sites.

  • 본 연구에서는 용접성이 좋고 강도도 적당하며 부식에 대한 저항성이 좋아 해 양구조물 및 용접구조용재로서 널리 사용되고 있는 5083-H113 Al 합금을 준비하고 이 재료의 균열형태에 따른 피로균열진전거동을 밝히기 위하여 관통균열과 포면균열의 진 전거동에 미치는 응력비의 영향을 균열닫힘과 함께 검토하였다.

The Geomorphological Development of Coastal Terraces at Jigyeong-Ri, the Areal Boundary between Gyeongju- and Ulsan Cities on the Southeast Coast of Korea

  • The existence of coastal terraces, HH(High higher) surfaces found at Gampo of southeast coast and at Jeongdongjin of the central east coast were confirmed at Jigyeong-Ri, the areal border between Gyeongju- and Ulsan city on the southeast coast of Korea Peninsula. Especially this study reports HH JK-surface located on the 155m a.s.l., which is the highest altitude among the ancient shorelines of the coastal terraces in Korea. The HH surfaces on the study area are classified into HH JK at 155m, HH-I at 140m and HH-II at 115m, and each formation stage is related to MIS 17(720∼690ka BP), MIS 15(630∼560ka BP) and MIS 13(510∼480ka BP) respectively. The HH-surfaces remain to be larger than those of H- and L-surfaces. The reason is caused by the unique factors of the coastal geology and morphology on the study area during the formation stage. And also the areal difference by the magnitude of upheaval doesn't exist from north to south because the altitude system of ancient shoreline on each coastal terrace is same along the east coast. The upheaval rate of the eastern coastal areas was measured in the relation to the ancient shoreline and formation stage among the coastal terraces such as HH JK-, HH-I, HH-II, H-III and H-IY surface, and was almost same as 0.23mm/y.

한국 남동해안 경주-울산 경계지역 지경리 일대 해안단굴 지형발달 (The Geomorphological Development of Coastal Terraces at Jigyeong-Ri, the Areal Boundary between Gyeongju- and Ulsan City on the Southeast Coast of Korea)

  • 한반도 남동해안의 감포와 중부 동해안 정동진에서 발견된 해안단구 고고위I면과 고고위II면을 울산-경주 경계지역 지경리 일대에서 재차 확인하였다. 특히 이곳에는 현재까지 우리나라에서 보고된 해발고도가 가장 높은 해안단구인 구정선고도 140m보다 한 단 더 높은 해발고도 155m인 고고위 지경(HH JK)면이 분포한다. 따라서 지경리지역 고고위면의 구정선고도는 해발고도 155m, 140m, l15m로 측정되었고, 형성시기는 각각 MIS 17(72∼69만년 BP), MIS 15(63∼56만년 BP)와 MIS 13(51∼48만년 BP)으로 편년되었다. 또한 고고위면의 규모가 매우 큰 것은 기반암과 고고위면 형성시 해안 지형의 특성에 기인하는 것으로 생각된다. 동해안 중부와 남부에서 고고위면을 비롯한 고위면, 중위면, 저위면의 구정선고도체계가 같으므로, Pleistocene 중기 이후 동해안에는 남북간 지반융기량의 차이가 존재하지 않는다. 해안단구 고고위 지경면, 고고위 I면, 고고위 II면, 고위 I면, 고위 II면의 구정선고도와 형성시기와의 관계로부터 얻은 동해안지역 지반 융기속도는 0.23mm/y로 거의 균일하다.

  • For the calculation of transonic laminar relative flow fields on the axisymmetric H-S and B-B stream surfaces in turbomachinery, a finite volume method developed in Part (I) is extended. Energy equation is replaced for simplicity by the condition of constant rothalpy throughout the flow fields. For axisymmetric H-S flow the circumferential componets of absolute velocity are given in advance so that this component of momentum equations can be neglected. Some numerical results show good agreement with experimental data.
