  • This research investigated recognitions on outside and inside electrodes in an electric circuit supplied by a galvanic cell, through survey and interview of teachers studying in Departments of Physics Education and Chemistry Education at H University Graduate School. Physics majors' designations on outside or inside parts of electrodes in a galvanic cell were different from Chemistry majors'. Teachers who had majored in physics had difficulties on the inside electrode of a galvanic cell, while teachers who had majored in chemistry had difficulties on the outside electrode. Reasonings for designations of electrodes were attributed to direction of electric current in case of physics teachers and redox in case of chemistry teachers, respectively, which are strongly dependent on backgrounds performed in their undergraduate course.

  • The Purpose of this study was to identify the level of learned helplessness and the relationship among variables affecting their learned helplessness. We have carried out research on 799 students. and collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, scheffe test, pearson's correlation coefficient. As a result, the mean score of learned helplessness was 2.55 (${\pm}.61$), Of the sub-domains, 'lack of control' was the highest with 2.85 (${\pm}.44$). And It was found that the helplessness was high in the case of poor fellowship, low academic achievement and poor family cooperation. These results were significantly correlated. Through the follow-up research, it is necessary to carry out management to reduce the learned helplessness by developing differentiated program that can reduce the learned helplessness of university students by identifying variables that can explain the learned helplessness of university students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of responsive teaching method for pre-service teachers in Chemistry Education Department of H University. We designed three steps for the discussions: foregrounding the substance of learners' ideas, recognizing the disciplinary connections within learners' ideas, taking up and pursing the substance of thinking. In the step of foregrounding the substance of learners' ideas, we analyzed the questionnaires conducted by the 20 pre-service teachers to understand the nature of their ideas about evaporation and boiling. Among them, five pre-service teachers were selected to recognize the disciplinary connections within learners' ideas. Through these steps, the pre-service teachers have grasped the nature of their thinking about evaporation and boiling, and have experienced the process of modifying or expanding the frames of thought by the disciplinary connections within learners' ideas. In addition, the pre-service teachers directly perceived the effect of the responsive teaching method by experiencing dynamic changes of their conceptions.

  • This study was focused on whether secondary science teachers have consistent, integrative scheme on the definition of atmospheric pressure and phenomena caused by air pressure. We had made questionnaire and let 94 science teachers answer. We sorted the responses according to their major, school and compared them with the description in textbooks. The result can be summarized into three findings. First of all, teachers whose major is chemistry have strong tendency to understand that atmospheric pressure is caused by molecular motion though it, in textbooks, is defined as the pressure by weight of air mass. The half of respondents believed that decreasing of atmospheric pressure in high altitude is due to molecular motions, while most textbook says decrease in the weight of air mass. Secondly, many science textbooks show that air mass expands, rises, becomes less dense and the pressure of atmosphere becomes low when it receives heat. So, most of respondents explained low pressure is formed by lower density. Thirdly, they answered that they just teach the phenomena of air pressure by using the textbooks which mainly deal with the present state rather than a principle. In conclusion, the science textbooks should present the exact description and consolidated structures of those concepts to prevent students from having misconceptions on air pressure. In addition, training program for science teachers would be necessary to reconsider and explore the natural phenomena in various viewpoints.
