Generally, underwater unmanned vehicle have adopted an inertial navigation system (INS), dead reckoning (DR), acoustic navigation and geophysical navigation techniques as the navigation method because GPS does not work in deep underwater environment. Even if the tactical inertial sensor can provide very detail measurement during long operation time, it is not suitable to use the tactical inertial sensor for small size and low cost UUV because the tactical inertial sensor is expensive and large. One alternative to INS is attitude heading reference system (AHRS) with the micro-machined electro mechanical system (MEMS) inertial sensor because of MEMS inertial sensor's small size and low power requirement. A cost effective and small size attitude heading reference system (AHRS) which incorporates measurements from 3-axis micro-machined electro mechanical system (MEMS) gyroscopes, accelerometers, and 3-axis magnetometers has been developed to provide a complete attitude solution for UUV. The AHRS based MEMS overcome many problems that have inhibited the adoption of inertial system for small UUV such as cost, size and power consumption. Several evaluation experiments were carried out for the validation of the developed AHRS's function and these experiments results are presented. Experiments results prove the fact that the developed MEMS AHRS satisfied the required specification.
Recent studies on ankle-foot prostheses used for transtibial amputees have focused on the adaptation of the ankle angle of the prosthesis according to ground conditions. For adaptation to various ground conditions (e.g., incline, decline, and step conditions), ankle-foot prostheses should first recognize the ground conditions as well as the current human motion pattern. For this purpose, the ground reaction forces and orientation angle of the tibia provide fundamental information. The measurement of the orientation angle, however, creates a challenge in practice. Although various sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, can be utilized to measure the orientation angles of the prosthesis, none of these sensors can be solely used due to their intrinsic drawbacks. In this paper, a time-varying complementary filtering (TVCF) method is proposed to incorporate the measurements from an accelerometer and a gyroscope to obtain a precise orientation angle. The cut-off frequency of TVCF is adaptively determined according to the human gait phase detected by a fuzzy logic algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is verified through experiments.
Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode. Among the gyroscopes used for SDINS, the dynamically turned gyroscope (DTG) covers a wide dynamic range while it is simple and small. In addition, it is a two-degree-of freedom gyro; it can detect two-axis input simultaneously. DTG, since its development in 1970's, is widely accepted for strapdown inertial systems. In the first year, we have concentrated on developing a two degree-of-freedom DIG. An interdisciplinary research team has been formed to accomplish the first year objective. Five departments in the College of Engineering, Seoul National University are involved. They are; 1) Department of Control and Instrumentation, 2) Department of Mechanical Design and Production, 3) Department of Electrical Engineering, 4) Department of Electronic Engineering, and 5) Department of Metallurgical Engineering. In addition, the Department of Precision Mechanical Engineering of Pusan National University is subcontracted to develop a test procedure for gyroscope and SDINS. Gyroscope is a key sensor for SDINS. Furthermore gyroscope itself is used as a. independent sensor for vehicle guidance and control and fire control system. Gyroscope and SDINS are an important for defense, aeronautical, and space industries that Korea is and will be actively involved. Upon the success of the project, they are expected to be manufactured in Korea under a cooperative effort between university and industry.

A part of the big differences between LEO(Low Earth Orbit) and GEO(Geostationary Earth Orbit) satellite is that transfer orbit is used or not or what tolerance of the position on the mission orbit is permitted. That is to say, the transfer orbit is not used and the constraint of orbit position is not adapted on LEO satellite. Whereas for GEO satellite case, the transfer orbit shall be used due to the very high altitude and the satellite shall be stayed in the station keeping box which is permitted on the mission orbit. These phases are functions for AOCS mission. The aim of this paper is to introduce the AOCS hardware configuration for COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite). The AOCS hardware of COMS consist of 3 Linear Analogue Sun Sensors (LIASS), 3 Bi-Axis Sun Sensors (BASS), 2 Infra-Red Earth Sensors (IRES), 3 Fiber Optical Gyroscopes (FOG), 5 momentum wheels and 14 thrusters. In this paper, each component is explained how to be used, how to locate and what relation between the AOCS algorithm and these components.
In this paper, a small and effective attitude estimation system for a humanoid robot was developed. Four small inertial sensors were packed and used for inertial measurements(3D accelerometer and three 1D gyroscopes.) An effective 3D pose estimation algorithm for low cost DSP using an extended Kalman filter was developed and evaluated. The 3D pose estimation algorithm has a very simple structure composed by 3 modules of a linear acceleration estimator, an external acceleration detector and an pseudo-accelerometer output estimator. The algorithm also has an effective switching structure based on probability and simple feedback loop for the extended Kalman filter. A special test equipment using linear motor for the testing of the 3D pose sensor was developed and the experimental results showed its very fast convergence to real values and effective responses. Popular DSP of TMS320F2812 was used to calculate robot's 3D attitude and translated acceleration, and the whole system were packed in a small size for humanoids robots. The output of the 3D sensors(pitch, roll, 3D linear acceleration, and 3D angular rate) can be transmitted to a humanoid robot at 200Hz frequency.
This paper proposes a single accelerometer sensor control algorithm to mobile inverted pendulum, generally called 'Segway', and evaluates the performance of this system comparing to the conventional ones. The commercialized 'Prototype Segway-PT' is initially considered as a next-generation transport vehicle. However, this robot is operated by three gyroscopes and two accelerometers to control the posture and speed, and it requires the complex signal processing for fusing the two sets of data. As the result of this, the growth rate of market size of 'Segway' is slow because of its high price mainly. In this paper, the mobile inverted pendulum is operated by a single accelerometer to simplify the control system to lower the price. Low pass filter is one of the good sensors to reducing the variation of an accelerometer, but it has time delay. This time delay disturbs real-time mobile inverted pendulum control. Like this, other various algorithms are used for this system, but each one has its own weak point. So this paper proposes a new filtering method, median filter and EKF. Median filter is used to image processing to reject impulse elements like salt and pepper noise. As the major performance evaluation parameter for the accelerometer, the high-frequency to low frequency ratio from FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) is used. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithms has been verified through the real experiments and the results are demonstrated.
An Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) provides the attitude of a vehicle with a constant velocity using an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a magnetometer. In this case, in order to avoid the disadvantage of a gyroscope, an AHRS using a Gyro-Free IMU (GF-IMU) that is composed of only accelerometers may be considered instead of the gyroscopes. In this paper, a design method of an AHRS using a GF-IMU is proposed. The proposed AHRS consists of roll and pitch calculation, yaw calculation, angular acceleration and angular velocity calculation, attitude calculation, and a Kalman filter. In particular, since the angular velocity cannot be measured from a gyroscope, the angular acceleration is obtained from the accelerometer output, and the angular velocity is calculated by integrating it. In order to show the usefulness of the proposed method, a performance evaluation was carried out. The performance evaluation results show that the attitude estimation performance of the proposed AHRS is similar to that of the conventional AHRS.
