  • Piezoelectric gyroscopes are the devices to measure angular rotational velocity of a system with respect to an inertial frame of reference means of the Coriolis principle. Most of current piezoelectric gyroscopes detect rotational velocity about a single axis of rotation. This paper describes development of a new dual axial gyroscope made out of the piezoelectric ceramic, PZT, which can overcome the limitation of the current single axial type. The validity of the new structure is checked through finite element analysis. Based on the design, an experimental sample of the sensor is fabricated and its performance is discussed in comparison with the theoretical expectation. The resutls show that the present gyroscope is capable of measuring the rotational velocity over two orthogonal axes simultaneously with good enough sensitivity and distinction between the two axial components of the rotation.

  • This paper provides an overview of recent trends in sensor fusion technologies for vehicle positioning. The GNSS by itself cannot satisfy precision and reliability required by autonomous driving. We survey sensor fusion techniques that combine the outputs from the GNSS and the inertial navigation sensors such as an odometer and a gyroscope. Moreover, we overview landmark-based positioning that matches landmarks detected by a lidar or a stereo vision to high-precision digital maps.

  • Mobile devices are becoming increasingly sophisticated and the latest generation of smartphones now incorporates many diverse and powerful sensors. These sensors include acceleration sensor, magnetic field sensor, light sensor, proximity sensor, gyroscope sensor, pressure sensor, rotation vector sensor, gravity sensor and orientation sensor. The availability of these sensors in mass-marketed communication devices creates exciting new opportunities for data mining and data mining applications. In this paper, we describe and evaluate a system that uses phone-based accelerometers to perform activity recognition, a task which involves identifying the physical activity that a user is performing. To implement our system, we collected labeled accelerometer data from 10 users as they performed daily activities such as "phone detached", "idle", "walking", "running", and "jumping", and then aggregated this time series data into examples that summarize the user activity 5-minute intervals. We then used the resulting training data to induce a predictive model for activity recognition. This work is significant because the activity recognition model permits us to gain useful knowledge about the habits of millions of users-just by having them carry cell phones in their pockets.

  • TIn this paper, Hemiplegic patients have gait characteristics different from normal persons. This paper presents a posture measuring and display system reflecting their characteristics. Patients wear 3 sensor modules on thigh, calf and foot. To enhance measuring precision of each sensor module, 3D accelerometer and 3D gyroscope are combined. Gait posture is displayed in 3D by modeling thigh, calf and foot as connected 3D objects based on data of the sensor modules. For convenience in inspecting unusual gait posture of hemiplegic patients, any view angle of the 3D display can be selected. In addition, the current gait phase of RLA(Rancho Los Amigos) gait cycle is determined and displayed in real-time by utilizing the posture information, The phase sequence and duration of each phase can be used in evaluating gait quality of patients.

  • Cattle estrus detection system based on Internet of Things is designed and implemented by using Arduino pro-mini, gyroscope, acceleration sensor, bluetooth master and slave module. The implemented system measures cattle's moving and the measured data are transmitted to the computer connected to RX module by bluetooth TX module. They are plotted in 2-dimensional graph on the computer monitor and the number of transition at each sensor axis are calculated from the graph. The detected and gathered data from the system are analyzed by the proposed algorithm to decide which cows are in the estrus or not. The method to apply bluetooth scatternet is shown and the proposed system can be used to increase the success rate of artificial insemination in normal estrus by detecting the cow's behaviors such as the number of jumping. In this paper, the implemented cattle behavior detecting the system(TX module) are strapped on cattle's leg and it measures the cattle behaviors for determining where that a cattle is estrus or not by the proposed algorithm.

  • Positioning systems have been actively researched and developed over the past few years and have been used in many applications. This paper presents a method to determine a location in a large space using a sensor system consisting of an accelerometer and a single-axis gyroscope. In particular, to consider usability, a sensor device was loosely worn on the waist so that the experimental data could be used in practical applications. Based on the experimental results of circular tracks with radiuses of 1m and 3m, in this paper, an algorithm using the threshold of rotation angle was proposed and applied to the experimental results. A tracking experiment was performed on the grid-pattern track model. For raw sensor data, the average deviation between the final tracking point and the target point was approximately 15.2 m, which could be reduced to approximately 4.0 m using an algorithm applying the rotation angle threshold.

  • Road facilities such as CCTV poles have potential risk of collision accidents with a car. A collision detection algorithm installed in the facility allows the collision accident to be known remotely. Most collision detection algorithms are operated by simply focusing on whether a collision have occurred, because these methods are used to measure only acceleration data from a 3-axis sensor to detect collision. However, it is difficult to detect other detailed information such as malfunction of the sensor, collision direction and collision strength, because it is not known without witness the accident. Therefore, we proposed enhanced detection algorithm to get the collision direction, and the collision strength from the tilt of the facility after accident using a 9-axis sensor in this paper. In order to confirm the performance of the algorithm, an accuracy evaluation experiment was conducted according to the data measurement cycle and the invocation cycle to an detection algorithm. As a result, the proposed enhanced algorithm confirmed 100% accuracy for 50 weak collisions and 50 strong collisions at the 9-axis data measurement cycle of 10ms and the invocation cycle of 1,000ms. In conclusion, the algorithm proposed is expected to provide more reliable and detailed information than existing algorithm.

  • This paper present effective odometry error compensation using multisensor fusion for the accurate positioning of mobile robot in navigation. During obstacle avoidance and wall following of mobile robot, position estimates obtained by odometry become unrealistic and useless because of its accumulated errors. To measure the position and heading direction of mobile robot accurately, odometry sensor a gyroscope and an azimuth sensor are mounted on mobile robot and Complementary-filter is designed and implemented in order to compensate complementary drawback of each sensor and fuse their information. The experimental results show that the multisensor fusion system is more accurate than odometry only in estimation of the position and direction of mobile robot.

  • Motion tracking and localization devices are an important building block of motion tracking systems in a virtual reality (VR) environment. This study is about improving the accuracy of motion and location for enhancing user immersion in experience type VR environment to position tracking technique. In this study, we propose and test a design of such a device. The module data test of the attitude and heading reference system shows that the implementation with the MPU-9250 sensor is successful and adequate to be used with short operation time. We consider various sensor hardware dependencies of VR, and compare various correction methods and filtering methods to lower the motion to photon (MTP) time that user movement is fully reflected on the display using sensor devices. The Kalman filter is used to combine the accelerometer with the gyroscope in the sensing unit.
