Analysis on Effects of Design Variable Uncertainty on the Performance of MEMS Gyroscope Based on Sample Statistics (샘플 통계에 근거한 MEMS 자이로스코프의 설계변수 불확정성이 성능에 미치는 영향 분석 방법)

  • Recently, a MEMS gyroscope has been broadly fabricated and used due to development of a micromachining. However, there is a difference between the modeling design and the actual product and this difference can lead to the performance variation of a MEMS gyroscope. A classical design method does not exactly estimate the performance of a MEMS gyroscope. Therefore a design process considering the design variable uncertainty has to be employed to design MEMS gyroscope model. In this paper, the equation of motion of a MEMS gyroscope model is obtained to analyze the performance of a MEMS gyroscope and the effects of the design variables on the MEMS gyroscope performance are investigated. Finally the performance of MEMS gyroscope is estimated through a statistical analysis based on sample statistics.

Dynamic Analysis of Toning-fork Gyroscope (음차자이로의 동적특성 연구)

  • A rate gyroscope has been used popularly to measure the angular motion of a given vehicle using a symmetric rotor spinning rapidly about its symmetry axis. Since the rapid rotation is required in this type of gyroscope, the motor has been used to make the rotor spin, so that it results in a heavy configuration. The toning-fork gyroscope has been developed to avoid this problem, which utilizes a Coriolis coupling term and vibration about one axis. Due to the Coriolis effect, the vibration of one axis is transferred to other axis when the angular motion along the vibrating axis is given to the system. The concept of a tuning-fork gyroscope was recently realized using MEMS techniques. However, the dynamic characteristics of the tuning-fork gyroscope has not been discussed in detail. In this study. we derived the equations of motion for the tuning-fork type gyroscope using the energy approach and investigated the dynamic characteristics by means of numerical analysis.

  • Dynamic modeling of an eccentric MEMS gyroscope is presented and the dynamic characteristics of the gyroscope are investigated with the modeling method. It is found that the eccentricity of the MEMS gyroscope affects the dynamic characteristics significantly. Different from conventional MEMS gyroscopes, the zero-rate output is significantly reduced in this gyroscope. To obtain general guidelines of the gyroscope design, dimensionless parameters are first identified and the effects of the parameters on the gyroscope performance measures are investigated.

  • Since the dimensions of MEMS gyroscope are very small compared to those of conventional gyroscope, MEMS gyroscope should be able to measure charge of pico-coulomb caused by very small change of electrodes gap. However, feed-through signal from driving electrodes to the sensing electrodes due to the electromagnetic coupling is much greater than the sensing signal, which degrades the sensitivity of MEMS gyroscope. This paper introduces the feed-through noise canceling technique using dummy port and confirms the feasibility of feed-through noise canceling experimentally. Experimental results shows that, when driving signal is 6 Vpp, 30 kHz, feed-through signal of vacuum packaged Si Gyroscope decreases from -53.2 dBm to -77.1 dBm by using feed-through reduction technique. Q-factor that could not be measured without noise reduction is measured to be about 2500 and resonance frequency to be 7.018 kHz.

  • This paper discusses recent development trends of fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) in space application. Fiber optic gyroscope utilizes Sagnac effect to measure the angular rate of a rotating object in space. Having a rather short development history compared to ring laser gyroscope (RLG), the fiber optic gyroscope, owing to the emerging technologies in fiber optic society and the digital signal processing technique, reveals itself as a noteworthy replacement of the ring laser gyroscope in the space mission. This paper summarizes the current trends of fiber optic gyroscope based on the actual products commercialized in the market over the last decades, while presenting the future development trends of the fiber optic gyroscope in the space exploration.

Performance analysis of feedback controller for vibratory gyroscope at various vacuum levels

  • In this paper, presented is a feedback control performance of vibratory gyroscope at various vacuum levels. Micro gyroscope, whose operation is based on the vibrating motion at the vacuum conditions, is highly influenced by the vacuum level of the operating circumstances. In general, we apply the feedback control scheme to the gyroscope in order to improve the performances of the sensor. And control performances of the gyroscope are related to those vacuum levels. So we need investigate the performances of the closed loop control at various vacuum conditions comparing with those of the open loop. The experimental results show that the sensitivity of the closed loop is less than that of the open loop especially in low vacuum conditions. Therefore, there should be trade-off between sensitivity and other sensor performances such as linearity, bandwidth when we apply feedback control to the gyroscope.

  • In this paper. we analyse and present electro-mechanical dynamic characteristics of a micro-machined vibrating silicon ring gyroscope which can measure angular velocities about three orthogonal axes. The ring gyroscope has a ring connected to the gyroscope main body by support-ligaments which are arranged with cyclic symmetry. The natural modes of its vibration can be distinguished into the in-plane motion and the out-of-plane motion which are coupled by the gyro-effect due to the rotation of the gyroscope main body. The motions of the ring are electro-statically derived. sensed and balanced by electrodes. The equations of motion are formulated. The measuring method of angular velocities by force-to-rebalance is presented. The dynamic characteristics of a ring gyroscope are calculated and compared.

  • A planar vibratory gyroscope using electrostatic actuation and electromagnetic detection is proposed. The gyroscope has large sensitivity and can be fabricated by using surface micrimachining, bulk micromachining and conventional machining technology. In this paper, the gyroscope and the electromagnetic detecting system equations are derived to determine the output characteristics for the planar vibratory gyroscope using electrostatic acturation and electromagnetic detection. The maximum output is obtained when the driving frequencyequals to the detecting frequency. The resonant frequencies of the resonator are determined by the beam stiffness, i.e. the material constants and spring dimensions. The dimensions of the beams are determined using the analytic vibration modelling. The expected resonant frequencies are 200Hz both and the sensitivity is 62mV/deg/sec with 4000 electronic circuit amplifying coefficient for an AC drive voltage of 3V bias voltage of 15V and DC field current of 50 mA.
