A 12-year-old female mixed breed dog receiving a progesterone drug was referred for evaluation of an abdominal mass. Abdominal radiography and ultrasonography revealed a swollen uterus and an associated mass. Serum chemistry revealed hyperglobulinemia consistent with acute inflammation based on the results of serum protein electrophoresis. Fine needle aspiration of the mass guided by ultrasonography was performed for cytological evaluation. The cytological impression was consistent with adenocarcinoma. Exploratory laparotomy identified a uterine body mass, which was surgically removed for histopathology. Histology of the mass identified a uterine adenocarcinoma. Immunochemistry using anti-estrogen and progesterone receptor antibodies was performed and neoplastic cells were negative to both antibodies while some normal elements were reactive to both of them. Computer tomography demonstrated evidence of metastatic disease in the lung one week after the surgery and the dog died about 40 days after surgery.

The manufacturing processes of high-precision parts for PGM (Precision Guided Missiles) have not been improved for decades; they still depend on machining or high-precision casting. These processes have an advantage when making small amounts of high-reliability parts in the usual case of a PGM system. In the case of a PGM system, however, which has been made for striking an extensive area, requires hundreds of bomblet units that require mass productivity. In addition, in the case of a part that is very difficult to machine, mass productivity and quality cannot be satisfied at the same time. In particular, cost reduction is an essential precondition to strengthening the export competitiveness of Korean defense articles. This study examined whether the MIM process is appropriate for manufacturing high-precision parts that require mass productivity. The optimized MIM process condition was determined after carrying out fundamental research. Comparisons of the quality of prototype parts with original parts and a functional test of a fuse that had been made with MIM parts highlighted the application possibility of the MIM process.

Parathyroid cyst are rare lesion of the neck and superior mediastinum. They are classified as either functional or nonfunctional based on the presence or absence of hyperparathyroidism. They typically present as a palpable neck mass, or as an incidental finding during neck surgery. So, it must be included within the differential diagnosis of a neck lump. A 48-year old woman was admitted to our hospital for evaluation of left anterior neck mass. Physical finding showed soft, movable, non-tender mass on the lower left third of the neck. Laboratory findings revealed normal thyroid function and normal serum calcium level. On previous history, patient underwent two times sono-guided fine needle aspiration at local clinic, and about 10cc clear watery aspirate was noted. Computerized tomography findings showed non-enhancing hypodense cystic lesion on left thyroid area with tracheal deviation to right side. Preoperative diagnosis was thyroid cyst, and thyroidectomy was planed. Intra-operative finding showed huge cystic mass occupying the left thyroid area and smooth, shiny, semitransparent thin cyst wall was noted, which was loosely attached to the thyroid. The cyst was easily dissected free from the thyroid and surrounding tissues. After cyst removal, pathological study confirmed as a parathyroid cyst.

An-11-year-old male Shih-tzu was admitted to emergency care unit of Haemaru Referral Animal Hospital with signs of dyspnea, anuria and depression. There were abnormalities on complete blood count and serum chemistry included leukocytosis with mild left shift, mild azotemia, and increased ALT activity. Fluid therapy(0.9% saline, 40 ml/hr) and antibiotics were immediately initiated. The patient began to vomit after 5 hours' rest and pale mucous membrane, bradycardia, and hypertension were noted. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed enlarged left adrenal gland and thrombus in caudal vena cava(CVC). Result of ACTH stimulation test was normal. Cytology of ultrasound-guided FNA smears showed numerous naked nuclei, which was suggestive of adrenal medullar tumor. Concentrations of 24 hour urine metanephrine and normetanephrine was moderately increased compared to those of a control dog. Adrenal mass was surgically removed, and biopsy of the CVC mass was obtained. After surgery the patient began to recover but the dog acutely developed cardiopulmonary arrest and died. On histopathology the adrenal mass and biopsy of the CVC mass were consistent with pheochromocytoma. On electron microscopic view norepinephrine specific granules were found in the cytoplasm of tumor cells.

Small bowel metastasis of pleomorphic carcinoma of the lung is very rare. A 58-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with abdominal palpable mass in the right upper quadrant area. He underwent right middle and lower lobectomy for early stage pleomorphic carcinoma of the lung approximately 3 months ago. USG-guided biopsy was performed for abdominal mass. Pathologic examination revealed a metastatic pleomorphic carcinoma from the lung. He received chemotherapy followed by radiation therapy but died due to septic shock caused by intestinal stenosis and adhesion. We report the first case of small bowel metastasis by pleomorphic carcinoma of the lung after curative surgery.

Epicoccum nigrum produces epipyrone A (orevactaene), a yellow polyketide pigment. Its biosynthetic gene cluster was previously characterized in E. nigrum KACC 40642. The YES liquid culture of this strain revealed high-level production of epicoccamide (EPC), with an identity that was determined using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis and molecular mass search using the SuperNatural database V2 webserver. The production of EPC was further confirmed by compound isolation and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. EPC is a highly reduced polyketide with tetramic acid and mannosyl moieties. The EPC structure guided us to localize the hypothetical EPC biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) in E. nigrum ICMP 19927 genome sequence. The BGC contains genes encoding highly reducing (HR)-fungal polyketide synthase (fPKS)-nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS), glycosyltransferase (GT), enoylreductase, cytochrome P450, and N-methyltrasnferase. Targeted inactivation of the HR-fPKS-NRPS and GT genes abolished EPC production, supporting the successful localization of EPC BGC. This study provides a platform to explore the hidden biological activities of EPC, a bolaamphiphilic compound.

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are rare soft tissue tumor, originating from neural or perineural cells. We present a case of axillary GCT in a 69-year-old woman with breast cancer history and discuss the various radiologic findings. US revealed a circumscribed oval heterogeneous iso- and hyperechoic mass in the left axilla. Chest CT showed a well-defined, oval, and mildly enhancing mass in the left axilla on the lateral aspect of the pectoralis muscle. A final diagnosis of GCT was made through US-guided core needle biopsy. Follow-up US showed no significant changes in the axillary GCT. Familiarity with GCT may facilitate early diagnosis and subsequent management.

An antiproliferative agent, streptochlorin, was isolated from the fermentation broth of a marine actinomycete isolated from marine sediment. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the strain belongs to the genus Streptomyces. Bioactivity guided fractionation of the culture extract by solvent partitioning, ODS open flash chromatography, and reversed-phase HPLC gave a pure compound, streptochlorin. Its structure was elucidated by extensive 2D NMR and mass spectral analyses. Streptochlorin exhibited significant antiproliferative activity against human cultured cell lines.

The purpose of this study is to explore the underlying causes of the development of private security in the United States. These include the increasing crime rates and fear of crime, the poor performance of public policing, the decentralization of political authority, the increase of mass private property, economic growth and increase of personal income, commodification of security, insurance companies' demand for tighter security and fear of litigation, and historical events such as World War I & II. Based on the findings of this study, it is suggested that no single factor would account for the growth of private security in the United States. In other words, the rapid growth of private security in the United States should be attributed to the interrelated influences of the factors given above. Finally, it might be the contribution of this study that the future development of private security in Korea would be guided by understanding the case of the United States because of the similarities of the developmental process in private security industry of two countries.

We report a case of 36-year-old woman with myasthenia gravis (MG) combined with mediastinal leiomyosarcoma (LMS) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). She was admitted to ICU with the symptoms of acute onset headache, diplopia, ptosis, dysphagia, general weakness, and respiratory difficulty for several days. Physical examination revealed tachypnea, decreased breath sounds and dullness to percussion in right lower chest. Neurologic examination showed ptosis, diplopia, decreased gag reflexes, and generalized proximal weakness. Laboratory studies revealed increased serum acetylcholine receptor antibodies and positive Tensilon test. Chest CT showed a huge mass in the right middle mediastium but no evidence of thymic enlargement. Mediastinal LMS was diagnosed by ultrasound-guided needle biopsy. The myasthenic symptoms were fluctuated in spite og intravenous immunoglobulin, plasmapheresis, and corticosteroid. During therapy, SJS developed. She died 4 months after the onset of the myasthenic symptoms despite the chemotherapy for LMS.
