Applying rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT), the properties of resonant diffraction gratings under conical light incidence is investigated. The mode vectors pertinent to resonant diffraction under conical mounting vary less with incident angle than those associated with diffraction gratings in classical mounting. Furthermore, as the evanescent diffracted waves drive the leaky modes responsible for the resonance effects, the conical mounting imbues diffraction gratings with larger angular tolerance than their classical counterparts. Based on these concepts, the angular-spectral and wavelength-spectral performance of resonant diffraction gratings in conical and classical mounts by numerical calculations with spectra found for conical incidence are quantified. These results will be useful in various applications demanding resonant diffraction gratings that are efficient and physically sparse.

A tensile-strain measurement method is proposed based on Depolarized Guided Acoustic-wave Brillouin Scattering (DGAWBS). The effect of tensile-strain applied to an optical fiber is investigated experimentally, observing that the resonance spectrum increases the measurement accuracy of DGAWBS at the TR25 mode. This paper presents a simple structure as tensile-strain sensor using two analyzers after sensing fiber.

A systematic study of Bloch surface wave (BSW), which is created by guided mode resonance (GMR) of dielectric multilayer structures with a grating profile, is presented to analyze the sensing performance of bio-sensors. The effect of structural parameters on optical behavior is evaluated by using Babinet's principle and modal transmission-line theory. The sensitivity of designed bio-sensors is proportional to the grating constant at wavelength spectrum, and inversely proportional to the normal wave vector of incident electromagnetic wave at angular spectrum. Numerical results for two devices with SiO/SiO2 and TiO2/SiO2 multilayer dielectric stacks are presented, showing that BSW can be exploited for the realization of efficient diffraction-based bio-sensors from infrared to visible-band range.
In this study, we analyzed the effect of silicon oxynitride matrix on the optical properties of Au nanoparticles dispersed on composite film and explored the effectiveness of the silicon in fine tuning the refractive index of the composite film for applications in optical waveguide devices. The atomic fraction of nitrogen in $SiO_xN_y$ films was controlled by varying the relative flow ratio of nitrogen gas in reactive sputtering and was evaluated optically using an effective medium theory with Bruggeman geometry consisting of a random mixture between $SiO_2$ and $Si_3N_4$. The Au nanoparticles were embedded in the $SiO_xN_y$ matrix by employing the alternating deposition technique and clearly showed an absorption peak due to the excitation of surface plasmon. With increasing nitrogen atomic fraction in the matrix, the surface plasmon resonance wavelength shifted to a longer wavelength (a red-shift) with an enhanced resonance absorption. These characteristics were interpreted using the Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory. The formation of a guided mode in a slab waveguide consisting of 3 $\mu$m thick Au:$SiO_xN_y$ nanocomposite film was confirmed at the telecommunication wavelength of 1550 nm by prism coupler method and compared with the case of using $SiO_2$ matrix. The use of $SiO_xN_y$ matrix provides an effective way of controlling the mode confinement while maintaining or even enhancing the surface plasmon resonance properties.

The resonance properties due to the surface plasmon(SP) excitation of metal nanoparticles make the nanocomposite films promising for various applications such as optical switching devices. In spite of the well-known ultra-sensitive operation of optical switches based on a guided wave, the application of nanocomposite film(NC) has inherent limitation originating from the excessive optical loss related with the surface plasmon resonance(SPR). In this study, we addressed this problem and present the experimental and theoretical analysis on the pump-probe optical switching in prism-coupled Au(1 vol.%):$SiO_2$ nanocomposite waveguide film. The guided mode was successfully generated using a near infrared probe beam of 1550 nm and modulated with an external pump beam of 532 nm close to the SPR wavelength. We extend our approach to ultra-fast operation using a pulsed laser with 5 ns pulse width. To improve the switching speed through the reduction in thermal loading effect accompanied by the resonant absorption of pump beam light, we adopted a metallic film as a coupling layer instead of low-index dielectric layer between the high-index SF10 prism and NC slab waveguide. We observed great enhancement in switching speed for the case of using metallic coupling layer, and founded a distinct difference in origin of optical nonlinearities induced during switching operation using cw and ns laser.

Si nanowires have exhibited unique optical characteristics, including nano-antenna effects due to the guided mode resonance, significant optical absorption enhancement in wide wavelength and incident angle range due to resonant optical modes, graded refractive index, and scattering. Since Si poor optical absorption coefficient due to indirect bandgap, all such properties have stimulated proposal of new optoelectronic devices whose performance can surpass that of conventional planar devices. We have carried out finite-difference time-domain simulation studies to design optimal Si nanowire array for solar cell applications. Optical reflectance, transmission, and absorption can be calculated for nanowire arrays with various diameter, length, and period. From the absorption, maximum achievable photocurrent can be estimated. In real devices, serious recombination loss occurring at the surface states is known to limit the photovoltaic performance of the nanowire-based solar cells. In order to address such issue, we will discuss how the geometric parameters of the array can influence the spatial distribution of the optical field (resulting optical generation rate) in the nanowires.

We examine the spectral characteristics of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) formed on an amorphous silicon film irradiated by a 355-nm nanosecond laser. A Gaussian beam with a diameter of 196 ㎛ is used to perform a two-dimensional raster scan. The laser's pulse number is varied from 190 to 280, and its intensity is adjusted within 100-130 mJ/cm2. LIPSSs with a periodicity of approximately 330 nm form on the surface of the Si film, aligned perpendicular to the laser's polarization. Transmission spectra of the samples show dips around 700 nm for transverse electric polarization and around 500 nm for transverse magnetic polarization. The features are investigated with a one-dimensional-grating model using a rigorous coupled-wave analysis. Simulations confirm that the observed dips are due to the resonant modes, depending on the polarization.

Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6 exhibits induced systemic resistance (ISR) against P. syringae pv. tabaci in tobacco. To identify one of the ISR metabolites, O6 cultures were extracted with organic solvents, and the organic extracts were subjected to column chromatography followed by spectroscopy analyses. The ISR bioassay-guided fractionation was carried out for isolation of the metabolite. High-resolution mass spectrometric analysis of the metabolite found $C_{9}H_{9}O_{3}N$ with an exact mass of 179.0582. LC/MS analysis in positive mode showed an $(M+H)^{+}$ peak at m/z 180. Nuclear magnetic resonance ($^{1}H,\;^{13}C$) analyses identified all protons and carbons of the metabolite. Based on the spectroscopy data, the metabolite was identified as 4-(aminocarbonyl) phenylacetate (4-ACPA). 4-ACPA applied at 68.0 mM exhibited ISR activity at a level similar to 1.0 mM salicylic acid. This is the first report to identify an ISR metabolite produced by P. chlororaphis O6 against the wildfire pathogen P. syringae pv. tabaci in tobacco.

The eigenvalue problems involving the diffraction of waves by multi-layered grating configurations can be explained by rigorous modal expansion terms. Such a modal solution can be represented by equivalent transmission-line networks, which are generalized forms of simple conventional circuits. This approach brings considerable physical insight into the grating diffraction process of the fields everywhere. In particular, the transmission-line representation can serve as a template for computational algorithms that systematically evaluate dispersion properties, radiation effects and other optical characteristics that are not readily obtained by other methods. To illustrate the validity of the present rigorous approach, the previous research works are numerically confirmed and the results agree well each other.
This study reports a portable and precision photonic biosensor reader that can measure the concentration of a particular antigen using an optical resonant reflection biosensor (ORRB). To create a compact biosensor reader, a compact tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and a compact built-in wavelength meter were manufactured. The wavelength stability and accuracy of the compact built-in wavelength meter were measured to be less than 0.02 nm and 0.06 nm, respectively. The tunable VCSEL emission wavelength was measured with the compact built-in wavelength meter, it has a fast sweep time (~ 10 seconds) and a wide tuning range (> 4 nm) that are sufficient for biosensor applications based on ORRB. The reflection spectrum of a plastic based ORRB chip was measured by the fabricated portable photonic biosensor reader using the VCSEL and wavelength meter. Although the reader is the size of a palmtop device, it could make a precise measurement of the peak wavelength on equal terms with a conventional bulky optical spectrometer.
