  • The present paper deals with the numerical study to analyze the self-starting performance of impulse turbine in a reciprocating air flow generated by sinusoidal motion of wave inside oscillating water column. Result was compared to that of Wells turbine, well-known wave energy conversion device, and showed that the impulse turbine has a superior self-starting ability. More detailed parametric study was performed to demonstrate the effects of moment of inertia of rotor, loading torque, tip clearance and angle of guide vane.

Simulation of turbulent flow of turbine passage with uniform rotating velocity of guide vane

  • In this study, a computational method for wall shear stress combined with an implicit direct-forcing immersed boundary method is presented. Near the immersed boundaries, the sub-grid stress is determined by a wall model in which the wall shear stress is directly calculated from the Lagrangian force on the immersed boundary. A coupling mathematical model of the transition process for a model Francis turbine comprising turbulent flow and rotating rigid guide vanes is established. The spatiotemporal distributions of pressure, velocity, vorticity and turbulent quantity are gained with the transient process; the drag and lift coefficients as well as other forces (moments) are also obtained as functions of the attack angle. At the same time, analysis is conducted of the characteristics of pressure pulsation, velocity stripes and vortex structure at some key parts of flowing passage. The coupling relations among the turbulent flow, the dynamical force (moment) response of blade and the rotating of guide vane are also obtained.

  • Francis turbine of commercial small hydropower plants under 10kw which is investigate a flow characterist and an efficiency in the research which it sees, the problem and an improvement is investigate. In the research which it is simply model with casing, guide-vane, runner, draft tube for simulation numerical analysis of small-sized Francis turbine. Model uses the Gambit and it composes with approximately 800,000 non-uniform lattices. Solutions are investigate the hydraulic characteristics against an outward angle of guide vane, the number of guide vane, head(inlet velocity) by using FLUENT which is a commercial business code.

  • In this study, numerical method, stage stacking method based on the result of numerical method and scaled stage stacking method have been applied to predict the performance of a multi-stage axial compressor with inlet guide vane. The results obtained through three different methods for off-design conditions were compared with performance test data. And the effect the angle of variable inlet guide vane was also investigated. The three-dimensional numerical simulation has been performed by using flow analysis program, $FLUENT^{TM}$ 6.3 and the performance prediction based on the stage stacking method has been performed with compressor analysis code from NASA.

Numerical Analysis for Improvement of Windshield Defrost Performance of Electric Vehicle (전기자동차 전면유리 제상성능 개선을 위한 전산수치 해석)

  • As the residence time in the vehicle increases, the passenger desires a pleasant and stable riding environment in addition to the high driving performance of the vehicle. The windshield defrosting performance is one of the performance requirements that is essential for driver's safe driving. In order to improve the defrosting performance of the windshield of a vehicle, relevant elements such as the shape of the defrost nozzle should be appropriately designed. In this paper, CFD based numerical analysis is conducted to improve defrost performance of small electric vehicles. The defrost performance analysis was performed by changing the angle of the defrost nozzle and the guide vane that spray hot air to the windshield of the vehicle. Numerical simulation results show that the defrosting performance is best when the defrost nozzle angle is $70^{\circ}$ and the guide vane installation angle is $60^{\circ}$. Based on the analytical results, the defrosting experiment was performed by fabricating the defrost nozzle and the guide vane. As a result of the experiment, it is confirmed that the frost of windshield is removed by 80% within 20 minutes, and it is judged that the defrost performance satisfying the FVMSS 103 specification is secured.

  • The present study investigated the effect of the rib arrangement and a guide vane for enhancing internal cooling of the blade. Two types of rib arrangements were used in the first and second passage in parallel. Aspect ratio of the channel was 5 and a fixed Reynolds number based on hydraulic diameter was 10,000. The attack angle of rib was $60^{\circ}$, rib pitch-to-height ratio (p/e) was 10, and the rib height-to-hydraulic-diameter ratio ($e/D_h$) was 0.075. The effect of an interaction between Dean vortices and the secondary vortices from the first passage was observed. Overall, the attack angle of rib in the first passage was dominant factor to heat transfer and flow patterns in turning region. Also, the channel with a guide vane showed enhanced heat transfer at the tip surface with reducing flow separation and recirculation.

  • The conventional method to assess turbine performance is its model testing which becomes costly and time consuming for several design alternatives in design optimization. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has become a cost effective tool for predicting detailed flow information in turbine space to enable the selection of best design. In the present paper, Francis turbine of commercial small hydropower plants which is under 70kw is investigated. Solutions are investigated with respect to the hydraulic characteristics against an outward angle of guide vane, the number of guide vane and head (inlet velocity). By suitable modification of the runner shape, low pressure zone on the leading edge can be reduced. If the entire runner is to be optimized in this manner, flow simulation tests have to be carried out on a series of different geometrical shape.
