To find out allelopathic potential of naturally occurring substances emitted form pinus korairnsis, water extracts and volatile sudstances of the tree materials werw provided and used for tests such as seed germination and seedling growth test. In general, the more was the concentration of the extracts and essential oils, the worse was growth effects of the selected species. The germination an the growth were inversely proportional to the concentration of the extracts and the essential oils of p. koraiensis. in other words, the chemical substances had the biological toxic activity. gc and gc/ms methods were employed for analysis and identification of phytotoxic substances from the tree leaves. Sixteen chemical compounds were identified from water extracts and nineteen from essential oils of p. koraiensis leaves. Through the experiment on germination and seedling growth test, the chemical substances naturally occurring from p. koraiensis seemed to be responsible for the allelopathic potential in this study.

To investigate phytotoxic substances in some donor plants and their biological activities, seed germination and seedling growth of receptor plants were examined at different concentrations of aqueous extracts and essential oils of the donor plants. Germination of some receptor species was inhibited by the extracts, while seedling growth was decreased to a lesser degree than in the germination test. Germination, seedling growth and dry weight growth of Achyranthes japonica grown in pot were proportionally inhibited by the extracts. Volatile substances emitted some donor plants caused inhibitory effects in the germination and seedling growth of the receptor species. Essential oil of the plants extracted by Karlsruker's apparatus Inhibited growth of microorganisms, callus growth and root hair development of receptor plants. The cortical cells at the root tips of Latuca sativa treated with essential oils showed contraction of the cytoplasm, resulting in plasma membranes becoming detached from the cell walls and the cells metamorphosing irregularity. Accumulation of lipid granules Inside contracted cytoplasm and degeneration of mitochondrial cristae were also observed. The GC/MS method was employed for analysis and identification of allelochemicals from donor plants. Sixty-one chemical substances such as camphene, cineole etc. were identified from essential oils of Artemisia argyi.
KDICical substances from Artemisia scoparia were analyzed by gas chromatography. Seven phenolic compounds and thirty nine terpenoids were identified. Most abundant within each group were cinnamic acid and camphor, respectively. The KDICicals were prepared as aqueous extracts and then used for germination, growth, and chlorophyll content tests. The extracts were inhibitory to germination and seedling growth of the receptor lants. This inhibitory effect was dependent on concentration. When the effect of the aqueous extract on chlorophyll content was assayed, both chlorophylls a and b were shown to be reduced. The reduction in seedling elongation and growth in dry weight paralleled the reduction in chlorophyll concentration. These KDICical substances, including phenolic compounds and terpenoids, from Artemisia scoparia were responsible for the growth inhibition of the selected species.
An antagonistic bacterium PM-1 which strongly inhyibits the growth of Pyricularia oryzae was isolated and identified as paenibacillus macerans. The antifungal substances of the strain PM-1 showed the broad antifungal spectra against P.oryzae races. Relating to the localization test, it was found that the antifungal substances existed not only in the cytoplasm but also in the culture supernatant, and importantly the antifungal activity of the latter was stronger than that of the former. The extracellular antifungal substances were extremely heat-stable up to $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min. The substances were optimally produced at $20^{\circ}C$ and pH 10.0 in a potato dextrose broth. The culture filtrate of the strain PM-1 caused a partial swelling of the mycelia of P.oryzae, and it prevents the normal growth of the fungus as well. This result suggested that the antifungal substances secreted by the strain PM-1 potentially inhibited the germination of P.oryzae.
The potential for humic substances to serve as terminal electron acceptors in microbial respiration and the effects of humic substances on microbial azoreduction were investigated. The dissimilatory azoreducing microorganism Shewanella decolorationis S12 was able to conserve energy to support growth from electron transport to humics coupled to the oxidation of various organic substances or $H_2$. Batch experiments suggested that when the concentration of anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS), a humics analog, was lower than 3 mmol/l, azoreduction of strain S12 was accelerated under anaerobic condition. However, there was obvious inhibition to azoreduction when the concentration of the AQS was higher than 5 mmol/l. Another humics analog, anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQDS), could still prominently accelerate azoreduction, even when the concentration was up to 12 mmol/l, but the rate of acceleration gradually decreased with the increasing concentration of the AQDS. Toxic experiments revealed that AQS can inhibit growth of strain S12 if the concentration past a critical one, but AQDS had no effect on the metabolism and growth of strain S12 although the concentration was up to 20 mmol/l. These results demonstrated that a low concentration of humic substances not only could serve as the terminal electron acceptors for conserving energy for growth, but also act as redox mediator shuttling electrons for the anaerobic azoreduction by S. decolorationis S12. However, a high concentration of humic substances could inhibit the bacterial azoreduction, resulting on the one hand from the toxic effect on cell metabolism and growth, and on the other hand from competion with azo dyes for electrons as electron acceptor.
To elucidate phytotoxic effects on the growth of receptor plant, germination and growth experiment of selected species have been performed with aqueous extracts and volatile substances of leaf and of donor plant, Thuja orientalis. The extracts of T. inversely proportional to the concentration. Gas chromatography method was employed for analysis and indentification of phytotoxic substances from T. orientalis. Forty-two kinds of KDICicals including ${\alpha}-thujone$ were identified from T. orientalis essential oil. Bioassay was performed with 6 KDICical such as ${\alpha}-pinene, \;{\alpha}-terpinene, \;{\gamma}-terpinene, \; {\beta}-myrcene$, and among them bornyl acetate was the strongest growth inhibitor.
It was found that seed germination and seedling growth of selected species were inhibited by phytotoxic substance released from black pine. The longer was the aqueous extraction time of black pine needles, the smaller was the relative germination and growth of the species were inhibited in aqueous leachate and rain leachate as well as in soil underneath the black pine trees. In addition, the growth of lettuce was suppressed in volatile substances from black pine needles. To detect phytotoxic substances of black pine needles, paper chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography were used and fourteen kinds of KDICical compounds were isolated and identified as phenolic acids including benzoic acids. The growth of lettuce was inhibited in the experiment using reagents identical to these KDICical substances and a great inhibition was observed in the concentration of less than 5$\times$ M.
In previous reports, the authors isolated the algicidal marine bacterium, Alteromonas sp. SR-14 and demonstrated its growth inhibition of diatom, Chaetoceros calcitrans (C. calcitrans). In this paper, we studied the effects of cell free culture filtrate of Alteromonas sp. SR-14 on the growth of C. calcitrans, and the characteristics of the algal growth inhibition substance. The culture filtrate of Alteromonas sp. SR-14 grown in peptone broth showed growth inhibition activity against C. calcitrans. The reasonable culture conditions of the bacterium for producing of algal growth inhibition substances were $15~20^{\circ}$ in temperature, 7.0-9.0 in pH and $23~30{\textperthousand}$ in salinity, respectively. The algal growth inhibition activity of culture filtrate was increased from stationary phase in growth curve of Alteromonas sp. SR-14. The molecular weights of algal growth inhibition substances produced by Alteromonas sp. SR-14 were ranged about from 3 KDa to 12 KDa. Among the substances, less than 10 KDa fraction were stable by heating at $100^{\circ}$ for 10 minutes, while more than 10 KDa fraction were heat labile. According to the experimental results, the algal growth inhibition substance produced by the bacterium was not a single compound.
the phytotoxic effects of volatile substances emitted from the tomato plant (Lycopersicon esculentum) on receptor plants such as Bidens bipinnata, Plantago asiatica, Lactuca sativa, Eragrositis ferruginea and Achyranthes japonica were investigated. Bolatile substances from the leaves inhibited seedling growth of receptor plants in the laboratory tests. The inhibition response varied with the concentration of compounds. To identify the phytotoxic compounds from tomato plant a GC/MS method was employed. Forth compounds, such as trans-2-hexeal, linalool, phenylacetaldehyde, methlsalicylic acid and tetradecanaic acid were identified from the essential oil of tomato plants. The findings suggest that the tomato plant may have allelopathic potential.
To evaluate the limitation for epiphytic and planktonic algal growth, acid extractable inorganic phosphorus (AP), implying the luxury uptake phosphorus, was measured in five reed zones of Lake Biwa. The AP in epiphytic substances was 0.7 to 1.4 mg P surface stem $m^{-2}$ in summer and 1.2 to 2.8 mg P $m^{-2}$ in winter. On the other hand, the amount in planktonic substances was 1.4 to 5.7 mg P m -3 and 0.8 to 5.4 mg P $m^{-3}$ in both seasons. Contribution of AP in the epiphytic and planktonic phosphorus was 23 to 31% and 8 to 27% in summer, and 17 to 22% and 9 to 17% in winter. It suggests that in summer both epiphytic and planktonic algae had been luxuriously taken up phosphate into cells. The weight ratios of C : N : P were averaged 79 : 20 : 1 for the epiphytic substances and 81 : 12 : 1 for the particulate substances. On the other hand, the ratios without the luxurious phosphorus were 93 : 24 : 1 and 103 : 15 : 1, showing much higher values than the Redfield ratio. High ratio in the epiphytic substances indicates that the phosphorus is the limiting parameter, rather than nitrogen, regulating the growth of epiphytic algal populations.
