ALA (5-aminolevulinic acid) has been proposed as a tetrapyrrole-dependent photodynamic herbicide by the action of the protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (Protox IX). A study was conducted to determine photodynamic herbicidal effect of ALA on seedling growth of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var. oryzicola Ohwi) under dry and wet conditions. ALA effect on early plant growth of rice and barnyardgrass was greatly concentration dependant, suggesting that it promotes plant growth at very low concentration and inhibits at high concentration. No significant difference in herbicidal activity of biologically and synthetically produced ALAs on plant lengths of test plants was observed ALA exhibited significant photodynamic activity regardless of PSDIP and its duration. Significant shoot growth inhibition by ALA soaking treatment exhibited apparently, indicating that ALA absorbed through root system was translocated into shoot part of plants. ALA reduced plant heights of rice and barnyardgrass seedlings by 6% and 27%, respectively, showing more tolerant to ALA in rice under wet condition. Leaf thickness was reduced markedly by ALA with increasing of ALA concentration, due to mainly membrane destruction and severe loss of turgidity in mesophyll cells, although the epidermal was little affected. It was observed that photodynamic herbicidal activity of ALA applied by pre-and post-emergence application exhibited differently on plant species, and that the activity of ALA against susceptible plants was highly correlated with growing condition.
In an aquatic environment, toxicity of metals to organisms depends on external factors (type of metal, exposure concentration and duration, environmental parameters, and water quality) and intracellular processes(metal-binding sites and detoxification). Toxicity of copper(Cu) on the marine microalga Tetraselmis suecica was investigated in this study. Dose-dependent (Cu concentration dependent) inhibition of growth and cell division, as well as, variation of intra- and extra-cellular Cu, Fe and Zn content was observed. T. suecica was sensitive to Cu; the 96 h $EC_{50}$ (concentration to inhibit growth-rate by 50%) of growth rate (${\mu}$) ($21.73{\mu}M\;L^{-1}$), cell division $day^{-1}$ ($18.39{\mu}M\;L^{-1}$), and cells $mL^{-1}$ ($13.25{\mu}M\;L^{-1}$) demonstrate the toxicity of Cu on this microalga. High intra-($19.86Pg\;cell^{-1}$) and extra-cellular($54.73Pg\;cell^{-1}$) Cu concentrations were recorded, on exposure to 24.3 and $72.9{\mu}M\;L^{-1}$ of Cu.
To examine the relationship between competition and environmental factors, the germlings of Ascophyllum nodosum (L) Le Jolis and Fucus vesiculosus L. were cultured in monocultures and mixtures of the two species under two different exposure and nutrient levels. Both intra- and inter-specific competition were examined in comparison of the mortality and growth of germlings in monocultures and mixtures of the two species. The mortality of germlings increased with increasing density and emergence periods both in the monoculture and mixtures of the two species, and the mortality of Ascophyllum was significantly higher than that of Fucus both in submerged and emerged treatments. The growth of germlings of both species reduced with increasing density but F. vesiculosus always grew faster than Ascophyllum. The values of log output ratio were more than 0.1, indicating that Fucus 'won' in the competitive battles with Ascophyllum under two nutrient- and air-exposure levels. Log output ratio was greater in high than in low nutrients, indicating that the growth of Fucus is more enhanced than that of Ascophyllum in high nutrients. In the present study, the outcome of inter specific competition between germlings of Fucus vesiculosus and Ascophyllum nodosum was slightly altered by duration of emergence and nutrient concentration, but not to such an extent as to change the outcome.
The efficacy of citric acid-aqueous chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) treatment of radish seeds artificially contaminated with Escherichia coli was studied. Radish seeds were inoculated with E. coli. Following inoculation, samples were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ and soaked in citric acid or aqueous $ClO_2$ for 10 min. The treatment of radish seeds using 200 ppm aqueous $ClO_2$ solution caused a 1.5 log CFU/g reduction in the population of E. coli. Compared to the aqueous $ClO_2$ treatment, soaking radish seeds in 2.0% citric acid solution for 10 min was more effective in reducing E. coli populations on radish seeds. The efficacy of spray application of chlorine (100 ppm) or 0.5% citric acid to eliminate E. coli during the germination and growth of radish was investigated. Radish seed inoculated with E. coli was treated for the duration of the growth period. Although it resulted in a decrease in the E. coli population, the spray application of 100 ppm chlorine during the growth period was not significantly effective. In contrast, the combined treatment of seeds using 200 ppm aqueous $ClO_2$ and treatment of sprouts with 0.5% citric acid solution during sprout growth was hardly effective in eliminating E. coli.
Noonan syndrome (NS) is an autosomal dominant disorder that involves multiple organ systems, with short stature as the most common presentation (>70%). Possible mechanisms of short stature in NS include growth hormone (GH) deficiency, neurosecretory dysfunction, and GH resistance. Accordingly, GH therapy has been carried out for NS patients over the last three decades, and multiple studies have reported acceleration of growth velocity (GV) and increase of height standard deviation score (SDS) in both prepubertal and pubertal NS patients upon GH therapy. One year of GH therapy resulted in almost doubling of GV compared with baseline; afterwards, the increase in GV gradually decreased in the following years, showing that the effect of GH therapy wanes over time. After four years of GH therapy, ~70% of NS patients reached normal height considering their age and sex. Early initiation, long duration of GH therapy, and higher height SDS at the onset of puberty were associated with improved final height, whereas gender, dosage of GH, and the clinical severity did not show significant association with final height. Studies have reported no significant adverse events of GH therapy regarding progression of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, alteration of metabolism, and tumor development. Therefore, GH therapy is effective for improving height and GV of NS patients; nevertheless, concerns on possible malignancy remains, which necessitates continuous monitoring of NS patients receiving GH therapy.
This study investigated the influence of sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate (SSL) emulsifier on the growth performance and nutrient digestibility of growing pigs. For this 56-day long-duration experiment, 80 heads of cross-bred ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) pigs with an initial body weight of 23.80 ± 4.87 kg were divided into two (2) treatment groups each fed a different diet: with and without an emulsifier. Each treatment group had 8 replication pens with 5 pigs per pen. Feed treatments were as follows: 1) CON: Basal diet, and 2) SSL: CON + 0.05% SSL. Body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were measured for three periods: 0 - 4, 5 - 8, and 0 - 8 weeks. The nutrient digestibility parameters consisting of dry matter (DM) digestibility and nitrogen (N) digestibility were calculated on the 4th and 8th week. Based on the results, the SSL supplementation did not show any significant influence on the growth performance parameters during the 0 to 4 and 5 to 8 week phases. For the overall performance, only the FCR (p = 0.048) was significantly different in the emulsifier fed group (SSL) compared to the CON group (T1). DM and N digestibility was also not influenced by the SSL addition in the growing pig diet. Overall, the SSL supplementation showed a limited effect on the growth performance of growing pigs.
Miscanthus sinensis Andersson (Poaceae) cultivars exhibit excellent visual appeal as ornamental grasses and adapt well to diverse environmental conditions. This study focused on assessing the growth response and landscape durability of seven popular Miscanthus cultivars ('Gold Breeze', 'Strictus', 'Morning Light', 'Variegatus', 'Gracillimus', 'Kleine Fontäne', 'Common') under drought, rainfall and low temperature condition. The test cultivars were transplanted and cultivated on research plots in 2013, with data collected from June 2017 to February 2018. Plant materials were categorized into three types based on the amount of the water lost; group I ('Kleine Fontäne', 'Variegatus', 'Strictus'), experiencing the most significant water loss; group II ('Common', 'Gracillimus'); and group III ('Gold Breeze', 'Morning Light') where the least water loss occurred. The drought resistance index (DRI) remained low as water shortage conditions persisted. The lodged angle underwent more pronounced changes in reproductive growth stage than in vegetative growth stage, notably decreasing after heading. Discoloration patterns were classified into two types: group I ('Common', 'Gold Breeze', 'Kleine Fontäne', 'Strictus') and group II ('Gracillimus', 'Morning Light', 'Variegatus') based on the periods of peak duration.
We studied the characteristics of age and growth of the Goldeyes rockfish Sebasetes thompsoni in the Ulleungdo and Dokdo areas by using 730 otoliths from February 2013 to February 2014. The lowest value of the marginal index was found in June once a year. The spawning period was estimated as April. Therefore, the duration from fertilization to the complete formation of the first annual growth ring is fourteen months. From the parameters calculated using the weighted average length of the year ring formation, the growth of S. thompsoni was demonstrated by the von Bertalanffy growth equation as $L_t=34.68(1-e^{-0.2113(t+0.7683)})$ for females and $L_t=29.79(1-e^{-0.2163(t+1.7964)})$ for males, $L_t=32.84(1-e^{-0.25(t+0.57)})$ for combined sex. Comparing with growth performance index(${\Phi}$) from these 4 offshore areas, parameter of S. thompsoni in Ulleungdo area was 2.4087, that of in Tong-yeong was 2.2835, that of in Aomori was 2.4077 and in Niigata was 2.3927. As a result, the value of Dokdo and Ulleungdo areas showed the highest.
Characteristics of age and growth of the black rockfish, Sebastes inermis sampled in the Jeonnam Marine Ranching Area (JMRA) around Geumo Islands south of Yeosu were investigated using 642 otoliths from March 2009 to February 2010. The opaque zone was formed in September once a year and hence it was used as an annulus. The parturient period was December to January, and therefore the duration from fertilization to the complete formation of the opaque zone was nineteen months. From the parameters calculated using the average length when the year ring was formed, growth of S. inermis were expressed by von Bertalanffy growth equation as $L_t$=23.267 ($1-e^{-0.4406(t+1.1971)}$) for females and $L_t$=22.030 ($1-e^{-0.5312(t+0.6834)}$) for males when is total length in age t. Through the growth equations, the maximum length was determined as 23.27cm for females and 22.03cm for males and the growth factor as 0.4406/yr and 0.5312/yr, respectively. Finally, the growth of female S. inermis is larger than the one of male S. inermis.
On the basis of the study intended to research by cross-sectional study keeped pace with semi-longitudinal study the growth accelerating phenomena that MGA(Maximum Growth Age) in teenager's body height. The duration of study is from Oct. 1st. 1991 to September 30 1992 and the data are analysed through computer. The body height and MGA of Koreans who had been for during the period from 1898 to 1973 proved transition of the growth accelerating phenomena by research data reported between 1913 and 1990. The results are as follows: 1. Maximum Growth Age The MGA's in body height of male are respectively the age 15.024 in 1913, 14.28 in 1940, 13.65 in 1959, 13.86 in 1967, 12.52 in 1983, 11.39 in 1987, 12.36 in 1990, while those of female are the age of 12.0 in 1940, 12.36 in 1959, 10.45 in 1969, 11.15 in 1985, 10.27 in 1988, 10.23 in 1990 ; these data show that the MGA of the Korean has been getting younger. 2. The correlation of the MGA's in body height are as below ; Male ; r = -0.448(p<0.01) Female ; r = -0.404(p<0.05) 3. The equation of linear regression of MGA's in body height are as below ; Male ; Y(MGA) = -0.0316X(the year)+75.297 Female ; Y(MGA) = -0.035X(the year)+79.986 4. The MGA's in body height are shown in Table 3. 5. From the transition of the growth accelerating phenomena, we can compute the fact that the MGA's has been getting younger by 0.3 year per 10 years. 6. The future growth accelerating phenomena in body height, the MGA's of male are respectively the age 12.25 in 1995, 12.09 in 2000, 11.94 in 2005, 11.78 in 2010, while those of female are the age of 10.16 in 1995, 9.98 in 2000, 9.81 in 2005, 9.64 in 2010, these data show that the MGA of female are more younger than that of male.
