A study was conducted to determine growth and survival rates of snakehead (Channa striata) larvae. Live foods such as Artemia salina nauplii, Moina micrura and bloodworm and artificial diet were given to larvae from 1-15 days after hatching as the 1st phase and from 15-30 days as the 2nd phase. In the 1st phase, the growth and survival rates of larvae fed with Artemia nauplii were significantly different from larvae fed with Moina (p < 0.05) with values of 28.5 mg, 49% and 26.7 mg, 31%, respectively. Meanwhile, all larvae fed with bloodworm (Chironomus sp.) or artificial diet (49% protein) died within 10 days of experiment. For the 2nd phase, growth of the fry fed with Artemia or Moina differed significantly from that fed with bloodworm or pellet (200.1, 187.7, 109.6 and 8.2 mg, respectively). Specific growth rate (SGR) of larvae fed with Moina was higher than that of larvae fed with Artemia (17.9 and 17.4% day$^{-1}$, respectively) in the 1st phase. In the 2nd phase, SGRs of larvae fed with Artemia (12.7% day$^{-1}$) or Moina (11.5% day$^{-1}$) were significantly higher than those of larvae fed with bloodworm (8.3% day$^{-1}$) or dry diet (6.1% day$^{-1}$). Generally, Artemia and Moina were suitable food for snakehead larvae during the first month of their life, and artificial diet was much less acceptable and resulted in poor growth and survival.
Purpose: To identify the effects of modified parenteral nutrition (PN) and enteral nutrition (EN) regimens on the growth of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. Methods: The study included VLBW infants weighing <1,500 g, admitted to Chungnam National University Hospital between October 2010 and April 2014, who were alive at the time of discharge. Subjects were divided according to 3 periods: period 1 (n=37); prior to the PN and EN regimen being modified, period 2 (n=50); following the PN-only regimen modification, period 3 (n=37); following both PN and EN regimen modification. The modified PN regimen provided 3 g/kg/day of protein and 1 g/kg/day of lipid on the first day of life. The modified EN regimen provided 3.5-4.5 g/kg/day of protein and 150 kcal/kg/day of energy. We investigated growth rate, anthropometric measurements at 40 weeks postconceptional age (PCA) and the incidence of extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR) at 40 weeks PCA. Results: Across the 3 periods, clinical characteristics, including gestational age, anthropometric measurements at birth, multiple births, sex, Apgar score, surfactant use and PDA treatment, were similar. Growth rates for weight and height, from time of full enteral feeding to 40 weeks PCA, were higher in period 3. Anthropometric measurements at 40 weeks PCA were greatest in period 3. Incidence of weight, height and head circumference EUGR at 40 weeks PCA decreased in period 3. Conclusion: Beginning PN earlier, with a greater supply of protein and energy during PN and EN, is advantageous for postnatal growth in VLBW infants.

Effects of animo acids infusion into the abomasum on plasma growth hormone (GH) concentration were investigated using three wethers of 54 kg of average body weight. Wethers were infused with either 3.25 mmol/kg BW/day of sodium chloride solution (control), 3 mmol/kg BW/day of alanine (Ala), or 3 mmol/kg BW/day of aspartic acid (Asp) continuously for five days through an abomasum cathether in a $3{\times}3$ Latin square desing. On the day of starting infusion (day 0) and day 4 blood samples were collected from a jugular vein every fifteen minutes for six hours after feeding, and their GH concentrations were measured. Blood samples were also collected immediately before starting infusion (day 0), and before feeding of day 1, day 2 and day 4, and their plasma free amino acid concentrations were measured. In the animals infused with Ala, plasma free Ala concentration was increased by Ala infusion and it continued for four days. Plasma GH concentration of these animals increased on day 0, but this phenomenon disappeared on day 4. In the animals infused with Asp, the increase in plasma Asp concentration was observed only on day 1. Plasma GH concentration of these animals was not affected by Asp infusion. These results suggest that continuous Ala infusion stimulates GH secretion for a short period, but the effect would not last long, and that continuous Asp infusion does not affect plasma GH concentration.
To investigate the distribution of Plantago asiatica Linne, almost, restricted on the road-side, the plant growth analyzed by experimental cultivation under the condition of tread-pressure; 10 times/day (7.33kg/$cm^2$
), 20 times/day (12.27kg/$cm^2$), 30 times/day (20.05kg/$cm^2$
) and the control plot (1.68kg/$cm^2$
). The matter production in the 10-time-per-diem plot (7.33kg/$cm^2$
) of tread-pressure howed more large value than that inthe control one (1.68kg/$cm^2$
) and those in the 20-0time-per-diem plot (12.27kg/$cm^2$
) and the 30-time-per-diem one (20.05kg/$cm^2$
) small values than that of the control plot. Especially, the growth of roots and spikes was extremely repressed. The number of leaves, scapes and lateral buds tend to increase in the tread-pressure of 20 times/day (12.27kg/$cm^2$
) and 30 times/day (20.05kg/$cm^2$
). The water contents of roots along the increase of tread-pressure to continuosly decreased. By the increase of tread-pressure, T/R ratio and C/F ratio their group decreased. The plant growth (7.33kg/$cm^2$
) in the 10-time-per-diem plot increased more than that in the control one is regarded as the effect of tread-pressure affection on the road-side distribution of this plant.
The measurement of cell death constant in Anabaena flos-aquae was tested by the Live/Dead BacLight Viability kit(Molecular Probes Co., Seatle, WA). When the Live/Dead BacLight Viability kit was applied to Anabaena flos-aquae, the cells with intact cell membranes(live cells) stained fluorescent green, while the cell with damaged membranes(dead cells) stained fluorescent red and the background remained virtually nonfluorescent. The rations of live : dead cells in the cell suspension were controlled artifically and Live/Dead BacLight Viability kit was applied to them. The ratios of green:red fluorescent cells in the cell suspension were the same as those of live : dead cells controlled artifically. It was also approved by the fluorescence emission. The cell death constant was measured in the P-limited Anabaena flos-aquae chemostal culture in the N-fixing and $KNO_3-supplied$ conditions. The culture in N-fixing chemostat had a dead cell proportion of 1.2% at the growth rate of 0.7/day and increased to 2.6% at the growth rate of 0.3/day. The cell death constant of N-fixing culture was 0.008/day.There was a same trend in the $KNO_3-supplied$ chemostat culture. The proportion of dead cell was 1.6% of dead cell proportion at the growth rate of 0.7/day and increased to 4.3% at the growth rate of 0.3/day.
Several growth characteristics of two ornamental tobacco species, Nicotiana sanderae and N. affinis, were investigated in this study. Also effect of temperature and daylength on the flowering of the tobacco plants were evaluated to obtain basic information on breeding and cultivation. 1. The plants were great in high temperature-long day at the early stage and in low temperature-short day at the late stage of plant growth, for both Nicotana species. At the early growth stage the leaf length N. sanderae was great in high temperature-long day, and that of N. affinis was great in high temperature-short day period, while at the late stage of the plant growth the leaf lengths were more significantly effected by the temperature rather than daylength. Leaf width and leaf shape index were less sensitive to the conditions. 2. For both of the species, the total number of tobacco leaves not much influenced by the temperature and daylength. 3. There were no significant differences for budding and flowering period between the two species, both of which were sensitive to temperature and daylength with more influence by daylength than temperature. 4. Number of floral stalks, number of flower and flowering period were not much influenced by temperature and daylength; however, N. affinis had 2 more floral stalks, 31 more flowers, and 6 day longer flowering period than N. sanderae.
This experiment was performed to study the effects of radioactive phosphorus($^{32}p$) on the growth of chick embryo and young chick. Radioactive phosphorus($^{32}p$) was administered into the yolk sac of chick embryo in doses of 2 uci/gm and 1 uci/gm and was administered intraperitoneally to the young chick in doses of 1 uci/gm and 0.5 uci/gm. The chick embryos were sacrificed on 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th day and the chicks were sacrificed on 1st, 3rd, 6th and 10th day after the administration and the liver, kidney, spleen, brain, eye ball and femur were weighed to observe the effects of growth inhibition on them. The results obtained were as follows. 1. A marked growth inhibitory effect was found on 8th, 9th and 10th day after the administration of $^{32}p$ in chick embryos and the same effect was found on 6 th and 10 th day after the administration in chicks. 2. The growth of the liver, kidney, spleen and femur was inhibited markedly but the brain and eye ball were not affected in chick embryos and chicks.
This study was designed to examine the effect of Mori cortex radicis extract on cytarabine induced alopecia in young rat. cytarabine (50 mg/kg) was injected to Eight-day-old rats everyday for 7 days. After the injection, Mori cortex radicis extract was spread on the alopecia young rats for 12 days topically. The stimulative effect of hair growth was observed on 12th day of topical application. The stimulative effect of hair growth was best in MeOH extract group. And the same result was obtained in the experiment of hair follicle cross section.
Varietal difference of crop stand, growth of each organs and the factors of dry matter Production at different growth stage of three local tobacco varieties (Hyangcho, Youngwolyub and Yonginyub) were investigated in 1979 and 1980. Varietal variation of total standing crops was clear from 45th day after transplanting to end maximum value of photosyntheticinon-photosynthetic organs was Hyangcho: 1.9, Youngwolyub; 1.6, Yonginyub; 2.3. Maximum value of L/S and T/R ratio was clear from 35th day after transplanting to 45th day. RGR, NAR and CGR were in decreasing order of Yonginyub) Youngwolyub)Hyangcho through out growth stage, LAR and SLA were in decreasing from early growth stage to last growth stage, LAI was obtained to maximum value in the large growth state and LAI was increasing order of during the total growth period that it was Hyangcho is 7.6. Youngwolyub is 9.1 and Yonginyub is 8.7, SLA was Hyangcho;$2.088\textrm{cm}^2$/g/leaf, Youngwclyub;$2.173\textrm{cm}^2$/g/leaf and Yonginyub;$2.020\textrm{cm}^2$/g/leaf, respectively.
Water temperature during the culturing period was 10.4-25.5$^{\circ}C$ and there was a little difference between rearing sites. Salinity (25.00-31.17 psu) and DO (over 6.13 mg/l) showed reasonable condition for the growth of bay scallop. Concentrations of chlorophyll-a were ranged 1.69-7.40 $^{\mu}$g/l, and they fluctuated monthly in the every sampling site. During the growing period from June to October, dominant phytoplankton species were Ceratium sp. in Nammeon and Hoejin, Chaetoceros sp. in Dolsan. Density of phytoplankton was high in July, August and October, but it was low in September and November. When young bay scallops were cultured for 185 days in Nammyeon, Hoejin and Dolsan, shell heights were grown for 0.19 mm/day, 0.18 mm/day and 0.16 mm/day, respectively, and total weights were increased 0.16 g/day, 0.16 g/day and 0.13 g/day, respectively. Daily growth rates of shell height were 0.606%, 0.581% and 0.549%, and daily growth rates of total weight were 1.972%, 1.857% and 1.746%, respectively. Maximum predicted values of shell height calculated by von Bertalanffy growth model were 52.62 mm, 51.74 mm and 48.91 mm, respectively. Survival rate was the highest in Nammyeon (87.0%), but the rates in Hoejin and Dolsan sharply decreased after November.
