  • We present here the effect of extracellular matrix (ECM) on the proliferation and physiology of HL-1 cardiac cells. HL-1 cell is from AT-1 mouse atrial cardiomyocyte tumor lineage. HL-1 cell can be serially passaged, yet they maintain the ability to contract which is a promising character of HL-1 cell for the cell based biosensors. HL-1 cells grow up on the ECM which can affect on the attachment and growth of HL-1. In this paper, we discuss HL-1 cell-ECM interactions with three different ECMs and non-treated surface. HL-1 cells are grown for 4 days after seeding then observed their attachment. Also they were immunostained by hoechst and EthD-1 for proliferation, phalloidin for Factin, and DAPI for nuclei. Fibronectin was revealed as the proper ECM material for HL-1 cell culture. This study can provide basic information for understanding the cell-ECM interactions and growth of HL-1 cells.

  • Indigo crop, Persicaria tinctoria H. Gross is an annual plant containing natural colorant, the blue dye indigo, and local cultivars had been cultivated to produce natural indigo for textile dyeing in Korea since ancient times. Naju No. 2 is a new mass-selected line from the mother population, Naju Local cultivar. In this study, two breeding lines of Naju Local and Naju No. 2, have been cultivated in four different locations, the South regions of Korea, to compare plant growth and yield characteristics between two lines. Naju No. 2 was higher in plant height, and Naju Local has more 1st branches. Naju No. 2 has larger leaf area and higher width/length ratio of leaf, showing the round leaf type as morphological stable character without regional differences. Though there was considerable regional variation in fresh and dry top weight of harvested plant, the significant difference of plant weight between two lines were not shown. The ratio of leaf to total shoot of dry weight of Naju No. 2 was higher than one of Naju Local, indicating that Naju No. 2 has better yielding of colorant which is synthesized mostly in leaf. Naju No. 2 contained more Niram (crude indigo extract) and indigo, and showed much blueness at dyeing of silk using fresh leaves than Naju Local. We concluded that a new line, Naju No. 2 could be a superior cultivar due to having higher leaf yield and better quality of natural colorant than Naju local cultivar.

  • The cultivars of wine grapes 'Doonuri', 'Narsha', 'Cabernet Sauvignon', and 'Merlot' were cultivated in Modified-T (MT), Modified-T Cane pruning (MTC), and Geneva Double Curtain (GDC) trellises, and the changes in vine growth, fruit and wine characteristics were compared for two years (2018 and 2019). With respect to the vine growth characteristics, the wine grape cultivars cultivated in the GDC trellis were significantly inferior to those cultivated in the MT or MTC trellises. The grape yields of the cultivars cultivated in GDC trellise increased by 1.5 to 2 times cultivated in the GDC trellises compared to those cultivated in the other trellis, however, the fruit characteristics (total soluble solids, titratable acidity, and berry weight) did not differ among the differently cultivated groups. Moreover, the anthocyanin content and red color of the wine were significantly enriched in all red wine grape cultivars cultivated in the GDC trellises.

  • Seaweed has high growth rate, low land usage, high CO2 absorption and no competition for food resources. Therefore, the use of lignin-free seaweed as a raw material is arising as a third generation biomass for bioethanol production. Various pretreatment techniques have been introduced to enhance the overall hydrolysis yield, and can be categorized into physical, chemical, biological, enzymatic or a combination. Thermal acid hydrolysis pretreatment is one of the most popular methods to attain high sugar yields from seaweed biomass for economic reasons. At thermal acid hydrolysis conditions, the 3,6-anhydro-galactose (AHG) from biomass could be converted to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which might inhibit the cell growth and decrease ethanol production. AHG is prone to decomposition into HMF, due to its acid-labile character, and subsequently into weak acids such as levulinic acid and formic acid. These inhibitors can retard yeast growth and reduce ethanol productivity during fermentation. Thus, the carbohydrates in seaweed require effective treatment methods to obtain a high concentration of monosaccharides and a low concentration of inhibitor HMF for ethanol fermentation. The efficiency of bioethanol production from the seaweed biomass hydrolysate is assessed by separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF). To improve the efficiency of the ethanol fermentation of mixed monosaccharides, the adaptation of yeast to high concentration of sugar could make simultaneous utilization of mixed monosaccharides for the production of ethanol from seaweed.

  • This study intends to provide the necessary basic data needed for predicting the water quality and examining changes in water quality on the basis of the hydrological changes: an outflow or the character of a flow by investigating the interaction of the parameters through the estimation of optimal parameters need for predicting the water quality of the dam basin and the sensitivity among those estimated parameters. Im-Ha Dam in the upstream area of the Nakdong River was selected for analysis, and the water quality survey data necessary for parameter estimation was based on the monthly water quality data (water temperature, BOD, T-N and T-P) between December 1, $2005{\sim}$November 31, 2006. K1C(the saturated growth rate of plant plankton), K1RC (endogenous respiratory quotient of plankton), KDC(deoxidized ratio), K71C(minealized ratio of dissolved organic phosphorus), K83C(mineralized ratio of dissolved organic nitrogen) have been considered as the factors of the water quality performed in this water quality simulation, that is, the most effective parameters on BOD, T-N and T-P. In the result of the analysis of the sensitivity, KDC(deoxidized ratio) was the most sensitively reacted parameter on BOD and it was K71C(mineralized ratio of dissolved organic phosphorus) and K83C(mineralized ratio of dissolved organic nitrogen) on T-N and T-P. It is considered that it will be possible to apply the most optimal parameter to an analysis of the water quality simulation at Im-Ha Ho basin in the goal year by examining the interaction of the parameters through the parameters sampling which are able to applicable to prediction of the water quality and the analysis of the its sensitivity, in the future, also the analysis on the basis of the hydrological conditions: an outflow or the character of a flow will be needed.

  • The study was designed to grasp the mental health of junior college students and identify the relation between mental health and social support. The subjects for this study were 781 sophomores attending T junior college in Taegu. The data were collected through questionnaire during the period from september 10,1993 to september 24, 1993. The results of this can be summarized as follows: In mental health the average mark was 1.94 on the basis of 5 marks. Those whose mark was more than 75% (low) had Depression(8.7%),Obsessive compulsive reaction(5.2%) Anxiety(3.6%). In social support, the average mark was 3.03 on the basis of 4 marks, which showed comparatively high support; relationship with friends was 75.4%, companionship was 75.4%, and mutual understanding was 72.3%. Many students got more than 75% in total marks. In the state of mental health, there was a significant difference depending on sex, total income, the character and the attitude toward his parents. There is also an unusual difference in social support depending on the major subjects, the character, the problem at present and the attitude toward his parents. In mental health, both male and female students got higher marks in Depression, Obsessive compulsive reaction than in any other item. In social support level all students had a high support in the relationship with friends and mutual understanding. Those who are affectionate to and dependent on their parents had a tendency to have better mental health. The simple correlation modules between social support mark and mental health one was -0.5555 and the partial correlation modules of controlling sex, age, growth place was -0.5557. There was little difference between them. In mental health items Interpersonal sensitivity was highest correlated with social support and Somatinization was lowest correlated. There was a significant correlation between mental health and social support: the higher social support were, the better mental health was. In conclusion, the study showed that the relationship between the social support and the mental health level revealed a significant correlation. In social support Expressive support (companionship support, mutual understanding support) showed a higher degree of support than instrumental support(monetary support, demand support). Therefore, in the guidance of students, it is necessary to expand expressive support considering these respects. Further multidimensional study is needed on how to improve the mental health of junior students through the social support.

  • Subtropical insect pests expand their habitats by migration to temperate zones along with global climate change. A subtropical insect pest, Maruca vitrata, is infesting leguminous crops including azuka beans in Korea and gives significant economic damages. Its great genetic variation raised an issue of the origin of a Korean M. vitrata population. To understand the genetic character of the Korean population, its cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox 1) gene was sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed with other regional populations. The world populations of M. vitrata were grouped into three clusters: Asia-African, American, and Oceanian. The Korean population was classified into Asia-African cluster. To characterize the insecticide susceptibility of the Korean population, seven different insecticides (4 neutoxic insecticides, 1 insect growth regulator, 2 biopesticides) were assessed. Young larvae of M. vitrata were relatively susceptible to all tested insecticides. However, old larvae were much less susceptible than young larvae. No test insecticides effectively (> 50%) killed the old larvae of M. vitrata within 7 days.

  • The study was performed to select a adaptable tree species under stressed field conditions where there are a industrial plants operating with a number of smoke stacks emitting pollutants, such as hydrogen fluoride and sulfur dioxide. As a result of the study, a tree species selected are due to construct a forest belt in a zones near industrial plants to reduce the concentrations of air pollutants. The concentrations of atmospheric hydrogen fluoride and sulfur dioxide were very higher at experimental sites near industrial plants (air-pollution sites) than at control site. The leaves of 7 tree species grown at air pollution sites contained more sulfur and, specially, fluorine than at those control site. Among the tested tree species, Ligustrum japonicum Thunb. and Euonymus japonica Thunb. grown at air pollution sites did not at all break out a foliar injury but appeared to be healthy, as well as those grown at control site. Acer pseudo-sieboldianum Kom., Pinus virginiana Mill., Larix leptolepis Gordon., Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc., Pinus strobus L., Picea abies Karst and Ligustrum obtusifolium Sieb. et Zucc., however, showed a severe fluoride-type foliar injury such as necrosis on tip or margin of leaves, etc. Fluorine found in leaves was proved to be correlated to sulfur found in leaves whereas index of foliar injury hadn't a good correlation to pollutants found in leaves. It appears that Euonymus japonica Thunb., Ligustrum japonica Thunb., Platanus acerifolia Willd, Chamaecyparis pisifera Endl., Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee and Sophora japonica L. grown at both experimental sites had a high value of percent survival whereas Pinus virginiana Mill., Pinus koraiensis Sib. et Zucc., Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm. and Alnus hirsuta Rupr. had an extremely low value of that. In comparison with control site, the percent tree height increments in Chamaecyparis pisifera Endl., Ligustrum japonicum Thunb., Quercus acutissima Carruth., Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee, Pinus thunbergii Parl and Euonymus japonica Thunb. and the percent upmost root diameters in Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee, Chamaecyparis pisifera Endl., Euonymus japonica Thunb., Ligustrum japonicum Thunb., Betula platyphylla var. japonica Hara and Pinus thunbergii Parl. cultivated at air polluted sites showed very high value above 90%, respectively. A significant negative correlation (r=-0.662) was recognized between the index of foliage injury and the percent collective character, which was the mean of tree characters such as percent survival, percent tree height increment and percent upmost root diameter increment which compared to those at air polluted site with those at control site. Based on the percent collective character Ligustrum japonicum Thunb., Euonymus japonica Thunb., Chamaecyparis pisifera Endl., Populus tomentiglandlosa T. Lee, Betula platyphyla var. japonica Hara and Platanus occidentalis L. have large value about 90%, respectively. Therefore, the results indicate that this tree species are adaptable species in air polluted regions. For better understanding of the adaptable tree species, furthur studies concerning the effects of various air pollutants on the tree growth are required.

  • In Charlotte's Web, each character motivates the other and strives for the new generation based upon motherhood. The intersection between life and death is directly and symbolically addressed as a component of the natural life cycle. Borrowing Kristeva's theory of the semiotic, the symbolic and the chora, this study investigates the dialectical oscillation between the semiotic and the symbolic and the social circumstances of subjects in signification as well as highlights the features of character growth. From a feminist perspective, herein, motherhood is translated not only as a robust foundation for relations among characters but also as an impetus for developing into a good and influential individual who embraces all organisms with care and consideration. Charlotte's Web clearly shows how the semiotic and symbolic elements of each being, united by motherhood, interact and lead to positive change. Though the world appears to consist of incompatible ingredients, they are combined. Charlotte's Web awakens the fact that their harmony makes a commitment to building a more wonderful place. It can be suggested that Charlotte's Web, where animal characters contain two tendencies of the human mind, exhibits human development proceedings.

  • The term research institute spin-offs refers to new firms created by public research institutes. These spin-offs are different from other start-ups in two respects: on the one hand, they should be located in the Special Research and Development Zones and, on the other hand, these firms are supposed to commercialize the results of public R&D activities. These spin-off firms show higher rates of survival and job creation than general new firms, which means that their contribution to economic growth is not negligible. The present study analyzes the factors affecting research institute spin-offs using a random effect panel logit model and negative binomial model. From previous studies, four elements are identified as playing an important role in the commercialization of public R&D through spin-offs, namely their organizational character, research capability, technological character, and geographical location. The empirical results demonstrate that government research institutes with more researchers and patents are more likely to create new firms. In addition, the location of the institutes significantly affects the probability of their creating spin-offs and their number. When the technological stage and TLO size are considered, however, it turns out that the number of researchers and technological stage play important roles in the spin-offs.
