  • A suppression of turbulent fluid motion and a control of oxygen and dopants could be improved by application of magnetic field in Czochralski growth of silicon. The effect of an axial magnetic field on Czochralski system was numerically calculated. The fluid motions induced by temperature gradients and by crystal and crucible rotations were suppressed by magnetic force. The S/L interface was gradually flattened in proportion to the increase of magnetic field due to a reduced ascending velocity in the vicinity of center line. The t.emperature distributions in the melt at 8=0.3 Tesla were similar to those analyzed by the conduction heat transfer only. The dissipated amounts of heat flux from melt and crystal surfaces by Ar gas blowing was Jess than 3 %.

  • The medicinal plant, Kanzo (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), mainly grows on arid lands. The root of Kanzo has been compounded about 70% of herbal medicines in Japan because it has an important medicinal element. In addition, in recent years, the expansion of desertification becomes a serious problem. The cause is chiefly man activity such as over gathering plants1). The aim of this study is to prevent desertification by cultivating Kanzo with high quality. The first step is to grow Kanzo for greening. The second step is to stably produce the root with high medicinal quality. This paper presents growth properties of cultivating Kanzo by bottom watering method, which is under constant groundwater level. The main results of this paper are as follows: (1) The lower water content of cultivating soil is, the longer the root length is, (2) Growth of Kanzo is influenced by soil types, (3) Thick primary roots grow directly and vertically in low water content. On the other hand, thin secondary roots grow curvedly and horizontally in high water content and (4) Measuring evapo-transpiration velocity is the effective method to evaluate roots' growth tendency in the field.

  • We investigated a synthesis yield and diameter distribution of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with respect to the growth position in a horizontal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) chamber. Thin films and line-patterned Fe films (0.1 nm thickness) were prepared onto ST-cut quartz substrates as catalyst to compare the growth behavior. The line-patterned samples showed higher growth density and parallel alignment than those of the thin film catalyst samples. In addition, line density of the aligned SWNTs at central region of the chamber was 7.7 tubes/㎛ and increased to 13.9 tubes/㎛ at rear region of the CVD chamber. We expect that the enhanced amount of thermally decomposed feedstock gas may contribute to the growth yield enhancement at the rear region. In addition, the lamina flow in the chamber also contribute to the perfect alignment of the SWNTs based on the value of gas velocity, Reynold number, and Knudsen coefficient we employed.

  • Noonan syndrome (NS) is an autosomal dominant disorder that involves multiple organ systems, with short stature as the most common presentation (>70%). Possible mechanisms of short stature in NS include growth hormone (GH) deficiency, neurosecretory dysfunction, and GH resistance. Accordingly, GH therapy has been carried out for NS patients over the last three decades, and multiple studies have reported acceleration of growth velocity (GV) and increase of height standard deviation score (SDS) in both prepubertal and pubertal NS patients upon GH therapy. One year of GH therapy resulted in almost doubling of GV compared with baseline; afterwards, the increase in GV gradually decreased in the following years, showing that the effect of GH therapy wanes over time. After four years of GH therapy, ~70% of NS patients reached normal height considering their age and sex. Early initiation, long duration of GH therapy, and higher height SDS at the onset of puberty were associated with improved final height, whereas gender, dosage of GH, and the clinical severity did not show significant association with final height. Studies have reported no significant adverse events of GH therapy regarding progression of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, alteration of metabolism, and tumor development. Therefore, GH therapy is effective for improving height and GV of NS patients; nevertheless, concerns on possible malignancy remains, which necessitates continuous monitoring of NS patients receiving GH therapy.

  • Water-jet trajectory visualization and velocity deficits from a high pressurized steam-generator nozzles were experimentally observed. In order to find an optimal nozzle configuration. several parameters affecting plugging and erosion onto the steam generator tube were quantitatively analyzed. For the experiments, a high-pressurized pump (pressure in use: 200 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 15 HP, 11 kW, output flow Q : 301/min) was utilized. Visualization, velocity distribution, and spray growth rate with different nozzle configurations have been mainly focused using a 2-D PDPA system. The results indicated that trajectories along the centerline regardless of their configurations has its potential core region. However, the phenomena from the peripheral part need to be meticulously considered. Accordingly, it is evident that quantitative velocity deficits at the outer region are outstanding due to the aerodynamical drag and entrainment.

  • HRP(high rate pond) which had kept the manufactured clay of 3cm-thickness as benthic clay in reactor and the 6 flat-blade turbine as impeller for agitation was named HRASP(high rate algae stabilization pond). And the experiment for treatment of artificial synthesis wastewater containing COD :300mg/$\ell$, NH$_3$-N : 300mg/$\ell$, T-P : 9mg/$\ell$ as nutrients was been performed successfully. This reactor was been operated under conditions : 24hrs.-irradiation and water temperature, $25^{\circ}C$ and pH 7 and agitation velocity, 15, 30, 45rpm and the effect of agitation velocity on algal bioaccumulation of nutrients was been studied with view point of fluid dynamics. The next followings could be obtained as results. 1. The agitation with a turbine impeller blade in HRASP makes clay particle indicate superior suspension effect by means of forming of excellent curl/shear flow in reactor. 2. The excessive suspension of clay particle which is created at 45rpm as rotation velocity of impeller blade of turbine disturbs the light penetration and algal photosynthesis reaction. 3. Efficiencies for removal of nutrients come out as COD : 93.9%~94.3%, ($NH_3-N + NO_3-N$) : 81.9%~99.0%, T-P : 46.8%~53.6%. 4. Kuo values of $K_1$for algal growth come out seperately as 15rpm : $1.876{\times}10^{-2}, 30rpm : 4.618{\times}10^{-3}$. 5. Kuo values of $K_2$for removal of N, P come out seperately as 15rpm : $8.403{\times}10^{-1}$ and $1.397{\times}10^{-1}$, 30rpm : $4.823{\times}10^{-1} and 2.052{\times}10^{-1}$. 6. It can be guessed easily that the excessive agitation can inhibit the algal and bacterial symbiotic reaction if it is considered that micro organism\` sense to preservation of life is relied on natural function of metabolism. Therefore the studies for this matter should be followed continuously.

  • Damage induced by low velocity impact loading in aircraft composite laminates is the form of failure which is occurred frequently in aircraft. Low velocity impact can be caused either by maintenance accidents with tool drops or by in-flight impacts with debris. As the consequences of impact loading in composite laminates, matrix cracking, delamination and eventually fiber breakage for higher impact energies can be occurred. Even when no visible impact damage is observed, damage can exist inside of composite laminates and the carrying load of the composite laminates is considerably reduced. The reduction of strength and stiffness by impact loading occurs in compressive loading due to laminate buckling in the delaminated areas. The objective of this study is to determine inside damage of composite laminates by impact loading and to determine residual compressive strength and the damage growth mechanisms of impacted composite laminates. For this purpose a series of impact and compression after impact tests are carried out on composite laminates made of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin matrix with lay up pattern of $[({\pm}45)(0/90)_2]s$ and $[({\pm}45)(0)_3(90)(0)_3({\pm}45)]$. UT-C scan is used to determine impact damage characteristics and CAI(Compression After Impact) tests are carried out to evaluate quantitatively reduction of compressive strength by impact loading.

  • The laminar boundary layer along a streamwise corner formed by two flat plates intersecting at right angle is measured by using Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) technique. The free stream velocity ranges from 2.96m/s to 3.0m/s. The angle of incidence of the corner is set to 1.2 degree providing slightly favourable pressure gradient to ensure a laminar flow in the corner region. A round shape leading edge is used and the length of the model is about 1000mm. In the bisector plane, the measurement data show separation type velocity profiles having an inflection point which is a typical characteristic of laminar corner boundary layers. As the distance away from the bisector plane increases, velocity profiles are found to change into the Blasius profile. The change completes around half length of the boundary layer thickness in the bisector plane away from the bisector plane along the plate. In the bisector plane, the growth characteristic of the boundary layer thickness and the approximate similarity of velocity profiles are confirmed from the measurement data.

  • Although the ultrasonic method has been developed and used widely in the fields, it has been used only for measuring the defect size and thickness loss. In this study, the relationship between surface wave attenuation through micro-crack growth and variation of velocity under repeated cyclic loading has been investigated. The specimens are adopted from 2.25Cr-1Mo steel, which is used for power plant and pipeline system, and have dimensions of $200{\times}40{\times}4mm$. The results of ultrasonic test with a 5MHz transducer show that surface wave velocity gradually decreases from the point of 60% of fatigue life and the crack length of 2mm with the increasing fatigue cycles. From the results of this study, it is found that the technique using the ultrasonic velocity change is one of very useful methods to evaluate the fatigue life nondestructively.

  • The author investigated the timing of land and wrist ossification events taking place in the hamate and pisiform by means of roentgenographic examination and its relation to the peak growth velocities in body height. Materials obtained included 493 sheets of X-ray films taken from 257 boys ana 236 girls aged between 7 and 17 years lived in Seoul area. The results indicate that; 1) The average ages at occurrence of initial ossification of the hook of the hamate were 12 years 3 months in boys and 10 years 1 month in girls. 2) The average ages at which advanced ossification of the hook of the hamate occurred were 13 years 7 months in boys and 11 years 11 months in girls. 3) Initial ossification of the pisiform appeared at 13 years 0 month in boys and 10 years 2 months in girls. 4) All three ossification events in hand and wrist, and peak growth velocity in body height occurred earlier in girls than in boys. 5) Initial ossification in the hook of the hamate and pisiform preceded or coincided with peak growth in body height in most boys and girls, on the other hand, advanced ossification in the hook of the hamate occurred around peak growth in body height but in girls did it after peak growth in body height. 6) It would appear that initial ossification in the hook of the hamate or in the pisiform, both for boys and girls, provides a better indication of approaching peak adolescent growth in body height. 7) Advanced ossification in the hook of the tamale would indicate that the period of cercumpuberal peak growth had teen entered or finished.
