  • It is very important for rehabilitation to deal with psychological aspects of persons with disabilities, as well as efforts improving the institutional and environmental conditions. A majority of persons with severe disabilities in the situation of Korea have difficulty in having and maintaining a job. Work should and would be a source of self-respect and material well-being in this modern society. Therefore, Vocational rehabilitation services are measures in restoration of family functions and social participation of persons with disabilities. This study aims at investigating linguistic characteristics and the validity of constructional concepts of picture interest test Inventories that have been utilized for the segregated groups of people such as persons with developmental disabilities. Picture interest test inventories seemed to be valid for measuring psychological traits and characteristics of people with mental retardation, and this finding can be extended to the group of other developmental disabilities, such as learning disabilities and mild/moderate behavioral deficits. The Holland classification system seemed to be best fitted for developing a comprehensive and accurate vocational interest inventory.

The Variation of Fruit, Seed and Germination Characteristics of Exochorda serratifolia (가침박달의 열매, 종자 및 발아특성 변이)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the variation of fruit, seed and germination characteristics among populations of Serrateleaf Pearlbush (Exochorda serratifolia S. Moore) distributed in Korea. Fruits collected from 96 trees in five natural populations and their five fruit, seven seed and three germination characteristics were analyzed. In 14 characteristics except for mean germination time, there were significant differences among populations and among individuals within population. Generally, fruit and seed characteristics showed higher values among population in total variance component. Coefficients of variations in weight of fruit (27.0%), length/thickness of seed (28.1%) and germination rate (52.5%) were relatively high compared to other traits. In seed germination behaviors, germination percentage, mean germination time and germination rate showed 62.9%, 64.0 days and 0.40 ea./day, respectively. As a result of simple correlation analysis, mean germination time showed a significant positive correlation with seed thickness, germination rate showed a significant positive correlation with height of parent tree and latitude, respectively. Also, latitude showed a positive correlation with fruit weight. The populations close geographically did not show the tendency of clustering into the same group. The results of principal component analysis showed that the first for principal components (PC's) explained 63.0% of the total variation. Primary 3 principal components appeared to be major variables because of the loading contribution of 97.0%.

Identification of Key Metabolites Involved in Quantitative Growth of Pinus koraiensis (잣나무의 생장특성과 관련있는 주요 대사물질 인자 구명)

  • A metabolomic study was conducted to identify key metabolic components, which are correlated with the growth of 4-year-old Pinus koraiensis seedlings harvested at actively height growing season (May 18th). Among 105 individual metabolites identified by GC/MS analysis, alanine, threonine, oleic acid, and butanoic acids were negatively correlated with both height and weight of 4-year-old seedlings, while malic acid, xylose, glucose, d-turanose and inositol had positive correlation with various growth parameters. During the actively growing season, the concentrations of both amino acids and organic acids in the main stem of Superior seedling group were lower but the photosynthates such as mono-saccharide and sucrose were higher than in other seedling groups such as Intermediate and Inferior. Interestingly, d-turanose, an analogue of sucrose that is not metabolized in higher plants but used as carbon source by many organisms including numerous species of bacteria and fungi, showed the highest correlation (r=0.896, p<0.001) with height of 4-year-old seedlings, indicating that possible interaction with mycorrhizal organisms. Therefore we suggest that several metabolites selected in this study may be used as metabolic markers for complex traits in P. koraiensis.

The Relative Effectiveness of Liquid Methionine Hydroxy Analogue Compared to DL-methionine in Broilers

  • The present experiment was conducted to assess the efficacy of liquid methionine hydroxy analogue-free acid (MHA-FA) in comparison to DL-methionine (DL-Met) in broilers. 567 day-old Avian chicks were divided into 7 treatments with 5 replicates of 16 birds each. During the 35d (7-42 d) experimental periods chicks were given two basal diets. From 7 to 21d of age, a starting basal diet containing 19.5% protein and 0.33% methionine was supplemented with two graded levels of DL-Met (0.070 and 0.160%) or four levels of MHA-FA (0.118, 0.143, 0.221 and 0.268%). From 22 to 42d of age DL-Met (0.050 and 0.080%) or MHA-FA (0.071, 0.074, 0.112 and 0.140%) were added to a finishing basal diet with 18.0% protein and 0.28% methionine. Chicks fed on supplemental DL-Met or MHA-FA had significantly higher (p<0.05) body weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) than the control group from 7-21d of age. During the finishing phase (22-42 d), body weight and weight gain of chicks in DL-Met or MHA-FA treatments were similar to those in the control, but FCR was improved (p<0.05) with supplementation of DL-Met or MHA-FA. Breast yield was higher (p<0.05) on DL-Met or MHA-FA supplemented than un-supplemented diets. The thigh meat yields emanating from diets with DL-Met or MHA-FA were lower (p<0.05) than that in control. Abdominal fat was also higher in broilers fed the control diet than in DL-Met or MHA-FA supplemented treatments. Methionine requirement of broilers was calculated to be 0.44 and 0.35% and cystine requirement was 0.35 and 0.31% for the starting (7-21 d) and finishing phase (22-42 d), respectively. The efficacy of MHA-FA in comparison to DL-Met for weight gain was 64 and 85% and for FCR was 55 and 60% at 7-21 and 22-42 d of age, respectively, while it was 74, 72, 52 and 48% for breast yield, thigh meat production, body energy content and energy deposition ratio at 42 d of age, respectively. In conclusion, in practical diet formulation for broiler chicks the average bioavailability of MHA-FA relative to DL-Met could be considered as 60 and 73% for 7 to 21d and 22 to 42 d of age, respectively.

Performance Patterns in Percussion Improvisation of Adolescents with Behavior Problems (청소년의 문제 행동 특성에 따른 타악기 즉흥연주 패턴 연구)

  • This study investigated the performance patterns in percussion improvisation of adolescents with behavior problems. A total of 40 middle school students participated in this study. Based on prescreening test results, the participants were assigned to either the impulsive tendency or depressive tendency groups. Both groups received two 45-minute group percussion improvisation. During the improvisation, all playing behaviors were recorded and analyzed in terms of rhythm pattern, instrument selection, intensity, and tempo of performance and performance duration. The results showed that while they were differences in improvised rhythm patterns between the two groups, the groups showed a similar tendencies in their instrument selection. With regard to performance parameters, the two groups showed significant difference in the tempo and duration of performance, but no significant difference was found in terms of intensity. This indicates that adolescents who exhibit behavior problems may be different in their playing patterns depending on their behavioral tendencies. Based on the results, music therapists can have a better understanding of how musical features expressed by this population relate to their inherent emotional and behavioral traits and how therapists should facilitate musical expression of these adolescents to address their needs.

Effects of physically effective neutral detergent fiber content on dry matter intake, digestibility, and chewing activity in Korean native goats (Capra hircus coreanae) fed with total mixed ration

  • Objective: This experiment was to determine proper physical traits in the diet for goats by investigating the effects of physically effective neutral detergent fiber (peNDF) content on dry matter intake (DMI), digestibility, and chewing activity in black goats fed with total mixed ration (TMR). Methods: Six growing wethers of Korean native black goats (Capra hircus coreanae) aged 8 months and weighing between 26.9 kg and 27.1 kg ($27.03{\pm}5.05kg$) were used in this experiment. Three diets of varying peNDF content were obtained by original TMR (T1), 12,000 rpm grinding (T2), and 15,500 rpm grinding (T3) of the same TMR diet. The $peNDF_{1.18}$ content of the experimental diets was 23.85%, 21.71%, and 16.22% for T1, T2, and T3, respectively. Results: Average daily gain (ADG) was higher in T2 group compared to those of the control and T3 groups, but ADG and DMI were not affected by the dietary particle size and peNDF content. Also, there was no difference between apparent nutrient digestibility of dry matter, crude fiber, ether extract, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber. Although there was no significant difference, rumination and total chewing time were associated with decreased peNDF content. Conclusion: The feeding of peNDF-based TMR showed no impact on apparent nutrient digestibility and nitrogen balance. Further studies are required with a wider range of dietary peNDF level and particle size to better identify the effect of dietary peNDF and particle size on chewing activity and performance in goats.

Dietary supplementation with combined extracts from garlic (Allium sativum), brown seaweed (Undaria pinnatifida), and pinecone (Pinus koraiensis) improves milk production in Holstein cows under heat stress conditions

  • Objective: This study was conducted to examine the effects of a mixture of pinecone oil, garlic, and brown seaweed extracts (PGBE) on milk production traits as well as physiological and ethological parameters in Holstein cows during the summer season (24 May to 03 July 2015, Korea). Methods: Among the extract combinations tested, we found that the level of 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylberzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) cation radical scavenging activity of the 0.16% PBGE complex at ratio of 1:1:1 (vol/vol) was comparable to that of the control (ascorbic acid; 1 mg/mL). Additionally, the PBGE complex reduced lipopolysaccharide-induced COX-2 expression in bovine mammary epithelial cells. Based on these findings, 40 lactating Holstein cows were used to measure the effects of PBGE complex at ratio of 1:1:1 (vol/vol) on milk production, immune response, metabolites, and behavior patterns by dividing the cows into two groups fed diets containing PGBE complex (n = 20; 0.016%/kg feed dry matter basis) or not containing PGBE complex (control, n = 20) for 40 d. Results: Results showed that PGBE complex did not influence milk composition, eating and ear surface temperature patterns, immune response, or metabolic parameters but promoted average milk yield throughout the experimental period. Additionally, a tendency of higher total antioxidant capacity and glutathione in the PGBE group was observed compared to the those in the control. When the temperature-humidity index (THI) exceeded 72 (average THI = 73.8), PGBE complex-fed cows experiencing heat stress showed increased milk yield and a tendency of increased rumination compared to the control. Conclusion: We suggest that incorporation of a combined mixture of 0.016% PGBE (1:1:1 ratio, vol/vol) to diet has the potential to improve milk yield and health status of cows under mild to moderate heat stress, denoting that it might be useful as an alternative anti-stressor in the diet of dairy cows under hot conditions.

Exploring the Inherent Trait of Music Giftedness of the Disadvantaged Gifted in Music (국내 사회통합범주 음악영재의 내재적 특성 탐색)

  • The working concept of the disadvantaged gifted is meant by those who hardly can have a chance to develop one's own gifts because of the environmental conditions and factors. The main purpose of this study is to explore the inherent trait of the music giftedness, which is composed of musical ability, creativity, and task commitment. Grounded upon the phenomenal research, this study purposefully samples ten disadvantaged students who participated in the arts gifted camp hosted by Korean National Research Institute for the Gifted in Arts. Thus, it explores the inherent traits of the disadvantaged gifted by coding, segmenting, and analyzing the interview with ten disadvantaged, and the evaluation reports of the expert group. The inherent trait of music giftedness of the disadvantaged gifted is shown as this: the inherent trait of the disadvantaged gifted in music is closely interrelated with one's own concept of giftedness. Whereas they show the high motivation and task commitment, they are hardly observed to have the creativity in their musical activities and learning. Finally, this study give a proposition for the strategy to stimulate and improve the inherent trait of the disadvantaged gifted in music: the importance of parents education and parent screening, meta-cognitive skills, the leaning-based creativity education, and the significant role of intrapersonal catalyst.

A Survey on the Problems and Conditions of Educational Guidance and Counselling in the Gifted Education Programs (초중등 영재학급·교육원의 학생 생활지도 실태 및 과제 - 영재 담당교사들의 인식을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the problems and conditions of educational guidance and counselling of teachers in the gifted classes. For the study, 267 teachers were sampled from the Gifted Education Institutes of metropolitan and provincial offices of education and Gifted Classes of the school across Korea, and the questionnaire developed by the researchers were administered to them. The results of this study are as follows : First, the 82% of respondents reported that the guidance and counselling in the gifted education is needed. So it demands the active responsive strategies on it. Second, the respondents reported that the selfish or self-centered traits of the gifted students are the most problematic in the gifted classes. It shows the emphasis should be put on the basic life habits and moral education in the guidance and counselling of the gifted education. Third, they pointed out the case-based education is needed for the parents of the gifted to correct their misconceptions about their children. Fourth, to support the teachers of the gifted program, the administrative measures have to be taken, like operation of character education program, forming a consultative group with the experienced teachers, developing the case-based guideline for the guidance and counselling for the gifted education, etc. Fifth, we should develop the Korean model of the gifted education to promote social capital for our future society.

Analysis of Major Traits for Native Ginseng(Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) Collected from Poonggi Area in Korea Using DNA Marker (DNA marker를 이용한 풍기 재래인삼의 주요 특성 분석)

  • In this study, a total of 25 lines consisting of five native ginseng collections from Poonggi area, five lines from Geumsam area and 15 varieties were analyzed and clustered for the selection of Poonggi native ginseng in Korea using DNA markers. The results indicated that the long cluster distance were observed between the collections of 331002, 331004, 331005, 331007 and 331026 from Poonggi area, and the collections of 332009, 332021, 332046, 332050 and 332066 from Geumsan area because of the sensible differences on the number of leaves per stem, stem color and petiole color. Thus, the collections from Poonggi area with specific characters consisting of one stem per plant, five leaves per stem and broad elliptic leaflet shape were finely classified using nine primers including OPD05, OPD20, OPG17, OPH05 and so on. In this study, the collection of 331007 from Poonggi area was considered as the respective collection with above characters. Thus, the nine primers such as OPD05 and so on, will be used to select the Poonggi ginseng in the future studies.
