  • The purpose of this article is to know the effects on bowel function of the kind of fiber and the amount of fiber in SD-rats. To do this experiment, we select of $\alpha$-cellulose as n insoluble cellulose source and alginic acid and pectin as soluble cellulose source. The rats diets contained callolose camcentrations of 1.0%, 3.6%, 6.0% and 10.0%. After that, we raised the SD-rats for 4weeks and measured the amount of food intake, body weight, the food effciency ratio, the length of liver and stomach the weight of the intestines, the transit time through the intestines, pH in feces, and the amount of bile acid and Ca, Mg, pp. 1) The amount of food intake was 15.75-31.00g/day. It was highest in the 10.0% cellulose group and the lowest in the 3.6% and 6.0% alginic acid group (p<0.05). The body weights of rats were 277.50-349.809. It was highest in the 1.0% pectin group and lowest in the 3.6% alginic acid group, 6.0% cellulose group, and 10.0% pectin group. It had differences according to the content fiber and the kind of dietary(p<0.01). The food efficiency ratio was (p<0.01). The higher the content of dietary fiber, the lower the calory and the food efficiency ratio. 2) Transit time was 446.0-775.0 minutes and it showed signidicant ifferences according to the content and kind of dietary fiber(p<0.01). • Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with fermented and non-fermented brown algae by-products on the laying performance, egg quality, relative organ weight, and blood profile of laying hens. Methods: Hy-Line Brown chickens (n = 180; 70-week-old) were randomly divided into 5 groups with 4 replicates per group (3 hens per cage, 4 cages per replicate), and fed with 5 experimental diets, namely the basal control diet (CON) or the control diet supplemented with 0.5% brown seaweed (BS), 0.5% seaweed fusiforme (SF), 0.5% fermented brown seaweed (FBS), or 0.5% fermented seaweed fusiforme (FSF), for 4 weeks. Results: Egg production rate and egg mass were greater in the BS group than in the other groups (p<0.05), and the SF and FSF groups had greater egg production than the control group (p<0.05). Egg weight was higher in the BS group than in the other groups (p<0.05). There were no differences in eggshell color, egg yolk color, eggshell strength, or eggshell thickness among the groups. There was no difference in Haugh units among the treatment groups, except for the FSF group, which had a significantly lower value (p<0.05). The non-fermented groups had greater relative organ weights, particularly the liver and cecum, than the other groups (p<0.05). Regarding blood profile, the supplemented-diet groups had higher albumin levels than the control group (p<0.05). The FBS group had higher total cholesterol and triglyceride levels than the other groups (p<0.05). The BS and FBS groups had higher glutamic pyruvic transaminase levels than the other groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that dietary brown algae supplementation can improve egg-laying performance; however, supplementation with fermented seaweeds had no positive effect on the egg-laying performance of hens.

  • To evaluate method for monitoring anesthetic depth with quantitative electroencephalography (q-EEG), we recorded processed EEG (raw EEG) and pain score till 100 minutes in beagle dogs anesthetized for 60 minutes with propofol (n = 5, PRO group), isoflurane (n = 5, ISO group) and propofol-ketaminefentanyl (n = 5, PFK group). Raw EEG was converted into 95% spectral edge frequency (SEF) by fast Fourier transformation (FFT) method. We investigated anesthetic depth by comparing relationship (Pearson's correlation) between q-EEG (95% SEF) and pain score. Pearson's correlation coefficients are +0.2372 (p = 0.0494, PRO group), +0.79506 (p < 0.001, ISO group) and +0.49903 (p = 0.0039, PFK group).

  • The purpose of this study was to search the optimal silane concentrations for filler- silanization of seven experimental composites. Silica filer was a 25micron crushed type. 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, and 3.0% silane($\gamma$-methacrylooxypropyltrimethoxysilane)were added into silica-filler with weight percentage (wt%). Mixtures(silica filler/silane)were reacted at 6$0^{\circ}C$ for 72hours, and crushed into fine particles those were used as fillers for 7 experimental composites. Monomer was a 3 : 1 mixture of Bis-GMA and TEGDMA containing 0.2% tertiary amine and 0.4% camphoroquinone for light curability. A ratio for mixing the monomer and filler was 75% and 25% respectively. Seven experimental composites was classified with the concentration of silane treated, and the specimen number for each test was 10. Specimens with 6mm diameter and 3mm height dimension for measuring the diametral tensile strength were destroyed with 1mm/min cross-head speed on Instron universal testing machine (No. 4467, USA). Shear bond strength was measured on the specimens bonded to bovine enamel etched with 37% phosphoric acid solution for 1 minute Fractured surfaces were observed by SEM (Hitachi S-3200, Japan) among that of the highest values measured from each groups. Following results were obtained: 1. Experimental composites containing silanized filter showed the significantly higher diametral tensile strength and shear bond strength than the composites containing un-silanized fillers(Group1) (p<0.05). 2. In silanized filler composite resins(Group 2~7), Diametral tensile strength of Group 3 showed the significantly higher than that of Group 2 and Group 6(p<0.05). 3. Shear bond strength was higher in Group 3 than that of Group 7 (p<0.05)in silanized fillers composite resins. 4. Fracture surface was formed in resin matrixes on the specimens from composites containing the fillers treated with 0.5% 1.0%, and 1.5% silane. These results mean that the optimal silane concentrations are exist for each fillet with its size and surface area, and that 1.0% is a optimal value for concentration to coat the 25$\mu\textrm{m}$ filler with silane.

  • The clinical effects of epidural nalbuphine were compared to those of epidural morphine in sixty Cesarean delivery. They were physical status 1 or 2 by ASA classification and randomly divided into three groups. They were administered nalbuphine 5 mg(Group N5), nalbuphine 10 mg(Group N10) or morphine 3 mg(Group M3) through an indwelling epidural catheter at the time of peritoneal closure. During the first postoperative 24 hours, their analgesic effects were evaluated by visual analogue scale(0-10), respiration rates and Trieger dot test. The severity of side effects(0-2) was also evaluated. The results were as follows ; 1) The number of patients who needed additional epidural analgesics was least in group M3 (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between group N5 and group N10. 2) The duration between the first and second epidural administration was ; 19.2 hours in group M3, 8.6 hours in group N10 and 5.4 hours in group N5. There was a significant difference each group (p<0.05). 3) From the fourth post operative hour, both groups receiving nalbuphine showed a higher VAS score compared to group M3(p<0.05). 4) The incidence of pruritus, nausea, vomiting and voiding difficulty were more severe in group M3 compared with the other groups. However the severity did not increase with increasing nalbuphine dosage. 5) There were no patients showing objective sedation or low respiration rate(10 times/minute). We concluded that epidural administration of nalbuphine 5 mg or 10 mg is one way of post operative pain control. Its side effects were less than epidural morphine, but it is a less convenient in the method of analgesia.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Successful recovery of an animal from exercise is essential, especially prior to the next exercise session. This study was conducted to find an effective exercise-to-rest period ratio for the restoration of energy sources and replenishment of anti-oxidative status in tissue after exercise. MATERIALS/METHODS: Thirty-two rats were assigned to either non-training or training exercise groups for 5 weeks. After that period, the two groups were subdivided into four smaller groups: non-exercise (NE), exercise 0.5 hour and rest 1 hour (ER0.5:1), exercise 1 hour and rest 1 hour (ER1:1), exercise 2 hours and rest 1 hour (ER2:1). RESULTS: In the training group animals and compared to the NE group, the levels of plasma glucose after the rest period were significantly high in all ER groups but highest in the ER2:1 group. Similarly, the liver glycogen level was highest in the ER2:1 group. The plasma FFA level reached the highest level in the ER2:1 group but was similarly high in the ER0.5:1 group. Liver TG level was unchanged in the ER2:1 and ER1:1 groups but was significantly high in the ER0.5:1 group. Muscle TG levels were decreased in all three ER groups. Plasma protein levels were significantly high in the ER2:1 and ER0.5:1 groups. In both training animal and non-training animals, the liver protein levels did not change significantly between the NE and ER groups, irrespective of the exercise-to-rest ratio. In the training animal group, muscle protein level was significantly low in the ER2:1 and ER0.5:1 groups. The activity levels of superoxide dismutase and catalase, as well as the malondialdehyde concentration, were not significantly different between NE and ER groups, irrespective of the exercise-to-rest period ratio. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that animals provided with a 0.5:1 to 1:1 exercise-to-rest period ratio can restore their muscle energy sources and recover their anti-oxidative defense system.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Nd:YAG laser treatment on removal of smear layer and exposure of dentinal tubules. The experimental specimens were obtained from root planed surface of 30 human teeth which were extracted due to severe periodontal disease. The specimens were assigned randomly of three groups: root planed group, Tetracycline HCl(100mg/ml, 5min) group, and Nd:YAG laser ($Laser-35^{TM}$, U.S.A. 5 seconds )group. Nd:YAG laser group was divided into 4 subgroups according to 3.0W, 3.5W, 4.0W, 4.5W of power. The surface change of specimens were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. The number of exposed dentinal tubules and percentage of area occupied by dentinal tubule orifices per unit area between each group was statistically analyzed by paired Student t-test. The results were as follows: 1. By root planing only, dentinal tubule was not exposed, but scale-like smear layer and parallel instrument tracks were resulted. 2. Tetracycline HCl treated surfaces exhibited the small number of partially exposed dentinal tubules with long orifices. The number($3.80{\pm}0.79$) of exposed dentinal tubules on Tetracycline HCl group was significantly less than that in laser groups above 3.5W of power(P<0.001), and the percentage ($0.68{\pm}0.19$) of area occufied by dentinal tubule orifices per unit area($192\;{\mu}m^2$) was significantly lower than that of any laser group(P<0.001). 3. The laser group irradiated with 4.5W of power showed both the most number($10.60{\pm}0.97$) of exposed dentinal tubules among the experimental groups, and the highest percentage($3.75{\pm}0.55\;%$) of area occupied by dentinal tubule orifices. 4. Energy Surge during laser pulsing and overlapping passes of the fiber resulted in melted and resolidified surface textures with lava-like appearance.

  • The aim of this experiment was to study the calcium sulfate on early bone consolidation in distraction osteogenesis in the canine mandible. Twelve dogs were used and divided into control group (group A, 4 heads), sodium hyaluronate injection group (group B, 4 heads), mixture of calcium sulfate and sodium hyaluronate injection group (group C, 4 heads). Each group were subdivided into 3 weeks testing group (totally 6 heads) and 5 weeks testing group (totally 6 heads). Mandibular distraction was started at the 5th day after the mandibular osteotomy and continued for 10 days by 1 mm a day. After the distraction on the 10th day of mandibular distraction, 0.5 m1 saline in group A, 0.5 m1 sodium hyaluronate in group B, and 0.5 ml mixture of calcium sulfate and sodium hyaluronate in group C were each injected in mandibular distraction lesion. And X-ray examination, bone mineral density, and histopathological findings were examined. The radiological findings were the most radiopaque in group C, and the most radiolucent in group A in both 3 and 5 week testing group. The level of bone mineral density was also the highest in group C, and the lowest in group C in both 3 and 5 week testing group. The histopathological findings of new bone formation were the most remarkable in group C in both 3 and 5 week testing group. New bone formation of group A was not present in both 3 and 5 week testing group. In conclusion, calcium sulfate is a kind of material that can stimulate early bone formation and can shorten the duration of bone consolidation. And it can be effective in clinical usage.
