  • The contaminant migration through the subsurface of Nanjido landfill is studied using a 2-D finite element model of contaminant transport. The leachate mounding caused by the installation of partial slurry wall around the pheriperal area of the Landfill is analysed using the finite difference model of groundwater flow. Model parameters were validated using in-situ concentration data and the behavior of the transport next 30 years is predicted. The sensitivities of chloride concentration by the change of model parameters, e.g. leachate mounding in the Landfill and the dispersivity are analysed. The results of the analyses show that the maximum chloride concentration level near Han River caused by the leachate of Nanjido Landfill would be 1488mg/1 and comes 17 years after the landfill closure. Increase of the leachate concentration is caused by the increase of both the leachate mounding and the dispersivity. However, the rate of concentration increase becomes higher with the rise of leachate mounding level, while it tends to converge a certain concentration with the increase of the dispersivity.

  • An aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) system can be very cost-effective and renewable energy sources, depending on site-specific parameters and load characteristics. In order to develop the ATES system which has certain hydrogeological characteristics, understanding the thermohydraulic process of an aquifer is necessary for a proper design of an aquifer heat storage system under given conditions. The thermohydraulic transfer for heat storage was simulated according to two sets of simple pumping and waste water reinjection scenarios of groundwater heat pump system operation in a two-layered aquifer model. In the first set of the scenarios, the movement of the thermal front and groundwater level was simulated by changing the locations of injection and pumping wells in a seasonal cycle. However, in the second set the simulation was performed in the state of fixing the locations of pumping and injection wells. After 365 days simulation period, the shape of temperature distribution was highly dependent on the injected water temperature and the distance from the injection well. A small temperature change appeared on the surface compared to other simulated temperature distributions of 30 and 50 m depths. The porosity and groundwater flow characteristics of each layer sensitively affected the heat transfer. The groundwater levels and temperature changes in injection and pumping wells were monitored and the thermal interference between the wells was analyzed to test the effectiveness of the heat pump operation method applied.

  • This study shows the assessment methodology for the water resources of subsurface dams. The study area is SSangcheon subsurface dam. It is at the estuary of SSangcheon watershed forming the unconfined alluvial aquifer. there are several candidate area which are geologically similar to it at East coast. The groundwater level was computed by a 2-D FDM model, where the watershed discharge is the input as the infiltration term. The baseflow computed as the mean value of 3 watershed dischrge model is $0.5m^3/sec$. And considering the inflow near the baseflow as the dry season inflow, The groundwater level according to the change of inflow and pumping rate was computed. Specifically, Using the real pumping rate $28000m^3/day$ which is equal to the supply amount of drinking water to Sokcho city, The inflow which induce the descended groundwater level to the bottom of aquifer or the ascended groundwater level that cause the surface flow was eatimated. The simulation for increased pumping rate and additional well construction to increase the water resources, was executed. And at the extreme dry season, available pumping rate was estimated.

  • Riverbank filtration has been used in advanced countries for 150 years. In Korea, investigations for producing riverbank filtrate started in the Han River, Nakdong River, Geum River, Yeongsan River and Seomjin River basins in the 1990s. The lower part of the Nakdong River has a poorer water quality than the upper part of the river. A water balance analysis and groundwater flow modeling were conducted for the riverbanks of the Nakdong River in Daesan-Myeon, Changwon City. The results of the water balance analysis revealed the groundwater infiltration rate into the aquifer to be 245.26 mm/year (19.68% of the average annual precipitation, 1,251.32 mm). Direct runoff accounts for 153.49 mm/year, evapotranspiration is 723.95 mm/year and baseflow is 127.63 mm/year. According to the groundwater flow modeling, 65% of the total inflow to the pumping wells originates from the Nakdong River, 13% originates from the aquifer in the rectilinear direction, and 22% originates from the aquifer in the parallel direction. The particle tracking model shows that a particle moving from the river toward the pumping wells travels 100 m in 50 days and a particle from the aquifer toward the pumping wells travels 100 m in 100 days.

  • Various Parameters such as stream velocities, discharges, and dispersion coefficients of dissolved solutes were estimated by fitting 1-D nonreactive solute transport model to the time-series chemistry data. This study was done for the reaches of Mankyung River lower than the Jeonju Wastewater Treatment Plant (Jeonju WTP). Korea. Concentrations of inorganic chemicals in the stream waters are strongly influenced by mixing with the chemically distinct effluent from Jeonju WTP. Sulfate, EC. and the total major cation were proved to be nearly conservative in the study area front their relationships with chloride, the conservative chemical species. The solute transport model was constrained to the time-series concentrations for these 4 conservative species. The variations of concentration and discharge of Jeonju WTP were used as input parameters, and the stream velocities, dispersion coefficients, and concentrations and discharges of some inflows were optimized. The differences between the observed arid simulated values for alkalinities and nitrates are inversely correlated and show diurnal fluctuations, indicating the photosynthesis. The parameters obtained front this mode] range from 550 to 774 kcmd (stream discharge at the outlet of the study area), from 0.06 to 0.10 m/sec (flow velocity), and from 0.7 to 6.4 m$^2$/sec (dispersion coefficient). The history of Jeonju WTP discharge was well predicted when optimized, indicating the validity of the model results.

  • Understanding the thermohydraulic processes in the aquifer is necessary for a proper design of the aquifer thermal energy utilization system under given conditions. Experimental and numerical test were accomplished to evaluate the relationship between the geothermal heat exchanger operation and hydrogeological conditions in the open-loop geothermal system. Sand tank experiments were designed to investigate the open-loop geothermal system. Water injection and extract ion system as open-loop borehole heat exchanger was applied to observe the temperature changes in time at injection well, extraction well and ambient groundwater. The thermohydraulic transfer for heat storage was simulated using FEFLOW for two cases of extraction and injection phase operation in sand tank model. As one case, the movement of the thermal plume was simulated with variable locations of injection and extraction well. As another case, the simulation was performed with fixed location of injection and extraction well. The simulation and experimental results showed that the temperature distribution depends highly on the injected water temperature and the length of injection time and the groundwater flow and pumping rate sensitively affect the heat transfer.

  • The hydrologic cycle in urban catchment has been changed due to the expansion of impervious area by rapid urban development. In this study, the SWMM 5 (Storm Water Management Model 5) model was used to simulate the hydrologic cycle of the Dorimcheon catchment which suffers from the distorted hydrologic cycle as a typical urban catchment. This study compare continuous simulation of urban runoff combining the channel and sewer system with that of channel only in the Dorimcheon catchment. Continuous simulations of urban runoff were performed for the upstream basin of Dorim bridge. The urban impervious regions were processed by the land use analysis from LANDSAT_TM images. It was performed from 1975 to 2000 for every five years. Surface, groundwater and wastewater runoffs were additionally included in the simulations one at a time. Such simulations made it possible to evaluate those components quantitatively. The result of continuous simulation of urban runoff combining the channel and sewer system is that peak flow and recession are well simulated. The analysis results of urbanization effect on runoff are as follows: the surface runoff in 2000 increases to 64% of the whole precipitation whereas the surface runoff in 1975 amounts to 46% of the precipitation; the groundwater runoff in 2000 amounts to 6% and shows 8% decrease during the period from 1975 to 2000.

  • An integrated model is presented to describe underground flow and mass transport, using a multicomponent multiphase approach. The comprehensive governing equation is derived considering mass and force balances of chemical species over four phases(water, oil, air, and soil) in a schematic elementary volume. Compact and systemati notations of relevant variables and equations are introduced to facilitate the inclusion of complex migration and transformation processes, and variable spatial dimensions. The resulting nonlinear system is solved by a multidimensional finite element code. The developed code with dynamic array allocation, is sufficiently flexible to work across a wide spectrum of computers, including an IBM ES 9000/900 vector facility, SP2 cluster machine, Unix workstations and PCs, for one-, two and three-dimensional problems. To reduce the computation time and storage requirements, the system equations are decoupled and solved using a banded global matrix solver, with the vector and parallel processing on the IBM 9000. To avoide the numerical oscillations of the nonlinear problems in the case of convective dominant transport, the techniques of upstream weighting, mass lumping, and elementary-wise parameter evaluation are applied. The instability and convergence criteria of the nonlinear problems are studied for the one-dimensional analogue of FEM and FDM. Modeling capacity is presented in the simulation of three dimensional composite multiphase TCE migration. Comprehesive simulation feature of the code is presented in a companion paper of this issue for the specific groundwater or flow and contamination problems.

  • This study estimates the baseflow using the separation of daily streamflow hydrograph. For the separation of hydrograph, we used standard method. This method was presented by Institute of Hydrology in 1980. For the estimation of baseflow, we estimated the parameters of model using the relation of the catchment properties and the baseflow index. The baseflow is estimated by the results of the separation of daily streamflow hydrograph and is estimated 20.0%∼39.4%. Baseflow rates is high for larger catchments but low for smaller catchments. As the results of this study, there is no relation between rainfall and baseflow rates.

  • Natural attenuation has been actively studied and often selected as final clean-up process in remediation of contaminated ground-water and soil for the last decade. Accordingly, understanding of natural processes affecting the fate and transport of contaminants in the subsurface becomes important for a success of implementation of the natural remediation strategy, Contaminant advection and diffusion processes in the unsaturated zone are naturally related to environmental changes in the atmosphere. The atmospheric pressure changes affecting the transport of contaminants in the subsurface are investigated in this study. Moisture content, trichloroethylene (TCE) concentration, temperature, and pressure variations in the subsurface were measured for the July, August, November, and December 2001 at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. These data were used for a one-phase flow and one-component transport model in simulating the soil-gas flow and accordingly the TCE transport in the subsurface in accordance with the atmosphere pressure variations at the surface. The soil-gas velocities during the sampling periods varied with a magnitude of $10^{-6}\;to\;10^{-7}\;m\;s^{-1}$ at land surface. The TCE advection fluxes at land surface were several orders of magnitude smaller than the TCE diffusion fluxes. A sensitivy analysis indicated that advection fluxes were more sensitive to changes in geo-environmental conditions compared to diffusion fluxes. Of all the parameters investigated in this study, moisture content has the most significant effect on TCE advection and diffusion fluxes.
