  • It is a method of suppressing back ground subsidence by re-injecting groundwater back to the target ground and recovering the underground water level. In order to analyze the subsidence of the back ground due to maintaining the underground water level, indoor model experiments were conducted. Through this study, the factors influencing on the groundwater and the tendency of subsidence back ground by experiments were analyzed and the effect of ground subsidence by reinfusion of groundwater was also investigated. As a result of the subsidence analysis with considering only the influence of the underground water level, the settlement of the ground occurs as the underground water level at the time of ground excavation goes down. The closer to the back of the retaining wall, the maximum settlement occurred. Moreover, it was analyzed that the influence distance where subsidence occurs from retaining wall to the point of about 1.8 H on the basis of the ground collapse. The most effective location of water reinjection is the closet location to the back of braced-cut wall for reducing the groundwater down and also minimizing the ground settlement.

  • When industrial structures are constructed on soft ground, ground subsidence is occurred by problems of bearing capacity. To protect ground subsidence have to improve soft ground, and have to predict settlement estimation for reasonable construction. Artificial Neural Networks(ANN) is adopted for prediction of settlement of construction during the initial design. In the study, Artificial Neural Networks are applied to predict the settlement estimation of initial condition ground and ground improved by D.C.M method. Also, this study compares results of Artificial Neural Networks and results of continuum analysis using Mohr-Coulomb models. In result, settlements of initial condition ground decreased over 0.7 times. Also, by comparing ANN and continuum analysis, coefficient of determination was comparatively high value 0.79. Thought this study, it was confirmed that settlements of improvement ground is predicted using laboratory experiment data.

  • In Bangkok, Thailand, there is an increasing concern for ground subsidence with the rapid urbanization. Given the presence of flood vulnerability due to the flat low-lying topography and proximity to the river delta, it is particularly significant to monitor deformation that can potentially augment flood hazards. In this paper, we have applied persistent scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PSInSAR) technique to investigate subsidence in Bangkok with the use of Sentinel-1 acquisitions spanning from June 2018 to October 2021. The vertical displacement velocity obtained from both ascending and descending orbits revealed regional-scale subsidence at rates up to 30 mm/yr. In addition, ongoing subsidence was observed in the suburb areas with the localized vertical subsidence exceeding 80 mm. The areas are primarily industrial and agricultural sectors, thus, the ground subsidence detected is probably caused by groundwater withdrawal. However, further work is needed to diagnose the trends of aquifer resources.

  • In this study, we conducted geophysical investigations for the organization of integrated geophysical methods to detect underground cavities of ground subsidence area at the field test site, located at Yongweol-ri, Muan-gun. We examined the applicability of geophysical methods such as electrical resistivity, electromagnetic, and microgravity to cavity detection with the aid of borehole survey results. Underground cavities are widely present within the limestone bedrock overlain by the alluvial deposits in the area of the test site where the ground subsidences have occurred in the past. The limestone cavities are mostly filled with groundwater and clays in the test site. Thus, cavities have low electrical resistivity and density compared to the surrounding host bedrock. The results of the study have shown that the zones of low resistivity and density correspond to the zones of the cavities identified in the boreholes at the site, and that the geophysical methods used are very effective to detect underground cavities. Furthermore, we could map the distribution of cavities more precisely with the test results incorporated from the various geophysical methods. It is also important to notice that the microgravity method is a very promising tool since it has rarely used for the cavity detection in korea. Beyond the investigation of underground cavities, the geophysical methods are required to provide useful information for the reinforcement design for the ground subsidence areas. It is, therefore, necessary to develop integrated geophysical technique incorporating different geophysical methods to precisely map underground cavities and image the subsurface of the ground subsidence areas.

  • Developed ground cavity due to leakage of decrepit old sewer pipe causes ground surface settlement and brittle fracture of pavement. Recently, for 5 years, frequency of occurrence of ground subsidence phenomenon tends to increase rapidly and/or steadily. It is difficult to investigate ground surface settlement and/or subsidence in urban area because most ground surfaces are covered with asphalt or concrete pavement. In this research, therefore, ground surface settlement, influence zone and settlement of sewer pipe were analyzed using finite element method. Not only reinforced effect of pseudo-plastic backfill that is applied to prevent ground surface settlement or subsidence spot, was compared and analyzed using numerical analysis program, but also direct shear test was carried out to determine strength parameters of pseudo-plastic backfill.

  • Amid increasingly saturated ground space, development of underground space has been booming throughout the world and excavation has been underway near the structure above or under the ground level. But the ground subsidence caused by improper or poor construction technologies, underground water leakage, sudden changes of stratum and the problem with earth retaining system component has been emerged as hot social issue. To deal with such problems nationwide, establishment of preventive and proactive disaster management and rapid restoration system has been pushed now. In this study, collection of the data on technology development trend to secure the underground safety was made, taking into account of internal change elements (changing groundwater level, damage to underground utilities, etc) and external change elements (vehicle load, earthquake and ground excavation, etc) during excavation. Amid the growing need of ground behavior analysis, ground subsidence evaluation technology, safe excavation to prevent ground subsidence and reinforcement technology, improvement of rapid restoration technology in preparation for ground subsidence and development of independent capability, this study is intended to introduce the technology development in a bid to prevent the ground subsidence during excavation. It's categorized into prediction/evaluation technology, complex detect technology, waterproof reinforcement technology, rapid restoration technology and excavation technology which, in part, has been in process now.

  • The collapse behavior of ground subsidence caused by continuous loss of particles depends on the saturated condition and density of the ground. In this study, types of ground subsidence were classified based on the saturated condition and each type was performed on the different relative density to analyze the influence factors on the collapse behavior by distinct element method. According to analysis results, the relatively small amount of settlement occurred on the dense ground and a cavity was created under dense-unsaturated ground. In contrast, loose ground showed the large amount of settlement and collapsed immediately without cavity formation even if the unsaturated ground was simulated. The results demonstrated that because the relative density has influence on the mechanical interlocking and saturated condition has influence on the inter-particle force, these are important factors to change the collapse behavior.
