  • Because a generated heat during grinding operation makes a serious deformation on a ground surface as a convex form, a real depth of cut in deformed zone has larger than an ideal depth of cut. Consequently, the ground surface has a geometric error as a concave form after cooling the workpiece. In this study, the force and the geometric error of surface grinding were examined. From evaluating magnitude and mode of the geometric error according to grinding conditions, an optimal grinding condition was proposed to minimize the geometric error. In addiction the relationship between the geometric error and the grinding force was found out. Due to least square regression it was able to predict the geometric error by using the grinding force.

  • Spaceborne sparse array radar for ground moving targets indication (GMTI) has outstanding advantage over full array radar for constructing ultra-large aperture. Rapid development of millimeter wave (MMW) technology make it possible for realizing MMW GMTI radar, which is much more sensitive to slow moving ground target. The paper presented the system model of a multi-carrier frequency sparse array MMW radar as well as preliminary simulation results, which showed future application of the system is very promising.

  • Based on twelve observational stations low meteorological visibility (LMV) data during November 2002 to April 2003, the spatial distribution of LMV over Hongkong area (113.8$^{\circ}$ E-114.4$^{\circ}$ E, 22.1$^{\circ}$ N-22.4$^{\circ}$ N) is studied, using a PCA method. Optical spectrum of NOAA-16 associated with LMV shows that the significant effect factors correlated with LMV in the leading mode are the difference or rate between the visible and near-IR channels and single visible channel. A successful retrieval of LMV is done and a regression equation with a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.67 is obtained.

  • Tire vibration modes are known to play a key role in vehicle ride and comfort characteristics. Inputs to the tire such as impacts, rough road surface, tire nonuniformities, and tread patterns can potentially excite tire vibration. In this study, experimental modal analysis on the tire with ground contact are performed by impacting the tire in the radial direction at the center of contact patch. To investigate which modes of tire influence the vibration of wheel and axle when the tire is in contact with ground, the vibration characteristics such as frequency response functions, natural frequencies and their mode shapes from tire to wheel/axle are examined.

  • Split-flow thin (SPLITT) cell Fractionation(SF) is a technique that allows separation of particulates and macromolecules into two fractions. A gravitational SF(GSF) system is constructed and tested for its applicability for separation of dust and ground water particulates. When tested with polystyrene latex particles, experimental data were in good agreements with theory. The 9.8 and 21.4㎛ polystyrene particles were successuflly separated in a continuous mode, where the mixture is continuously fed into the GSF channel allowing separation in a large sacle. The GSF system is successfully applied to continuous separation of dust and ground water particels based on the sedimentation coefficient, which is closely related to the particle size. The separations were confirmed by microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysos.

  • This paper describes terrain-adaptive attitude controller for a hybrid mobile platform which operates in wheel & track mode. The wheel mode of the hybrid mobile platform allows quick driving performance in the flatland, while the track mode provides adaptive movement in the rough ground or stairway. The switching of the platform between two modes is automatically controlled by attitude controller algorithm. In addition, in the track mode, the platform automatically adjusts its attitude angle to overcome the obstacles in front. This paper demonstrates the attitude controller for the aforementioned wheel-track hybrid mobile platform in order to overcome terrain obstacles by using an adaptive method. The driving performance of the hybrid mobile platform has been tested and verified in various surrounding environments in both wheel and track mode. Further, this paper presents the experiments by using the track structure of mobile platform on forming adaptive attitude under various types of obstacles. The practicability and effectiveness of the proposed attitude controller of the platform has been demonstrated in urban building and a test-bed.

  • In this paper we present the Bimodal-tram simulator using the PXI embedded real-time controllers. The Bimodal-tram is developed in KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute). The vehicle can be automatically operated by navigation control system (NCS). For the automatic driving, the vehicle lanes will be marked with permanent magnets that are placed in the ground. The vehicle is controlled by NCS. NCS governs the manual mode and automatic mode driving. The simulator is designed by an identical conception with the real control condition. The dynamic motion of vehicle is simulated by the nonlinear dynamic model. The control computer calculates the control values. The signal interface is linked by CAN communication. The simulation is processed by real-time base. The test driver can see the graphic motion of vehicle and can operate the steering wheel, gas and brake pedal to control direction and velocity of vehicle during the simulation. At present, the simulator is only operated by manual mode. The automatic mode will be linked after the control algorithm is finished. We will use the simulator to develop the control algorithm in the automatic mode. This paper shows the simulator designed for Bimodal-tram using real-time based controller. The results of the test using the simulator are presented and discussed.

  • Recently, many techniques have been developed for the inspection of pipelines using guided waves. However, few researches have been made on the application of those techniques for buried underground pipes. Guided wave motions in the buried pipes are somewhat different from those of on-ground pipes which have traction-free (air) boundary condition on outer pipe walls and thus are strongly affected by the mechanical property of the surrounding soils. Therefore, it should be investigated the effect of soil properties on the guided wave behavior in buried pipe. On the other hand, the mechanical property of soil is largely depending on its moisture conditions nevertheless of other influential factors such as void ratio. In this study, the effect of moisture conditions in soils on mode attenuation of guided waves in the buried pipe is investigated. To this end, numerical study is performed to characterize mode attenuation behavior in buried pipes and the effective mode which is suitable for long range inspection is identified.

  • High frequency common mode voltage produced by PWM inverter fed Induction motor is a major cause of conducted EMI, creation motor ground currents, bearing currents and other harmful products. The zero switching states of inverter control invoke large in comparison with the non-zero switching state of Inverter control. We proposed a common mode voltage reduction method based on sinusoidal PWM technique. PWM signal are generated by comparing respective sinusoidal reference signal with three triangular carrier wave displaced of 120$^{\circ}$. Simulation and experimenta1 result show that common mode voltages in the proposed PWM technique are reduced by approximate 66% more than conventional FWM technique.

  • Due to the complex arrangement of frequency plans and spatial overages in modern satellite communications, channels that are non-contiguous in frequency may be amplified by a single power amplifier and transmitted to the ground through one beam. In this paper, a dual-mode canonical filter with dual-passband is presented. The filter adopts dual-mode technique for mass and volume reduction. Canonical structure is adopted for maximum transmission zero realization. To validate the design technique, a 6-pole dual-mode canonical dual-passband filter for Ka-band(30/20 ㎓) satellite transponder is realized. The measured frequency response of the filter shows good agreement with the computed one.
