  • This paper describes target detection performance of millimeter wave radar that exits on non-stationary target detection schemes in the ground clutter conditions. The comparison of various CFAR process schemes such as CA(Cell-Average)-CFAR, GO(Greatest Of)/SO(Smallest Of)-CFAR, and OS(Order Statistics)-CFAR performance are applied. Using matlab software, we show the performance and loss between target detection probability and signal to noise ratio. This paper concludes the OS-CFAR process performance is better than any others and satisfies the optimal detection probability without loss of detection in the homogeneous clutter, When range bins increase.

  • This paper described the medium voltage high temperature superconducting cable thermal simulation and its application. New simulation method for HTS cable modeling using PSCAD/EMTDC is introduced in this paper. The developed simulation method consists of electrical model part and thermal model part. In electrical model part, power loss and thermal capacitance can be calculated in each layer, then the temperature of each layer can be calculated by power loss and thermal capacitance in thermal model part. This paper also analyzes the electrical and thermal characteristic in the case of normal operating condition and transient including single line to ground fault and line to line ground fault using new simulation method.

  • The use of ground fly ash in concrete can increase the risk of slump loss due to the drastic surface change of the particles after the grinding treatment and the accelerated reaction compared to the untreated ash. This study is aimed at the early age hydration and time-dependent rheology changes of cement paste containing ground fly ash. An original fly ash is ground into different fineness and the hydration of cement paste containing the ground fly ash is monitored with the ultrasound propagation method. The zeta potentials of the solid particles are measured and the changes of rheological parameters of the cement pastes with time are analyzed with a rheometer. A particle packing model is used to probe packing of the solid particles. The results show that the early age hydration of the paste is strongly promoted by replacing Portland cement with fly ash up to 30 percent (by mass), causing increase of the yield stress of the paste. The viscosity of a paste containing ground fly ash is lower than that containing the untreated ash, which is explained by the denser packing of the solid particles.

  • This study investigates experimentally the optimum mix proportion and design factors of the stabilizing liquid used for excavation of the massive and deep slurry wall in LNG in-ground tank before pouring concrete. Considering those site conditions, the stabilizing liquid used for excavation of slurry wall has to be satisfied with some requirements including specific gravity, fluid loss, cake thickness, funnel viscosity and sand content in order to construct the safe and qualified slurry wall. For this purpose, we select materials including bentonite, polymer and dispersion agent. After performing many tests for materials and mix design process, we propose the optimum mix proportion that the upper limit ratio of bentonite is $2.0\%$, polymer is $0.1\%$ considering the funnel viscosity and dispersion agent is $0.05\%$considering the fluid loss of the stabilizing liquid. Also, we select all materials which are consisted of GTC4 as bentonite, KSTP as polymer and Bentocryl 86 as dispersion agent. Based on the results of this study, the optimum mix proportion of the stabilizing liquid is applicable to excavate the deep and massive slurry wall in LNG in-ground tank successfully.

  • This paper describes atmospheric phenomena and effects for satellite-to-ground laser communication channel. Satellite laser communication has advantages such as very high bandwidth, inherent security, robustness to electromagnetic interference, unlicensed frequency band. However, satellite laser communication is affected by various factors. Transmission quality is degraded by factors as system loss, geometric loss, misalignment loss, atmospheric loss. Atmospheric loss is major factor of performance degradation. In this paper, the atmospheric phenomena such as absorption, scattering and turbulence are discussed and analyzed for developing satellite laser channel model and laser transmission scheme robust to atmospheric phenomena.

  • We investigate the characteristics of a wideband and high-gain cavity-backed slot antenna in terms of the reflection coefficients, radiation patterns, and gain. A cavity-backed slot antenna structure includes baffles, reflectors, and thick ground planes. The measured gain and bandwidth of a 10-dB return loss in a cavity-backed $2{\times}2$ array slot antenna with $h_1=2 $mm, d=2 mm are 15.5 dBi and nearly 27%, respectively, at 42 GHz. Baffles and reflectors are used to increase antenna gain, thus reducing the coupling among the slots on the thick ground plane.

  • After the historic opening of the first section of KTX(Korea Train eXpress), it has been made changes three times in a plan to pass through cities of Daejeon, Daegu in the construction of the high speed train's second section(underground${\to}$ on ground${\to}$ under ground${\to}$ on ground). Thereafter, it has been repeatedly argued that the plan to pass through underground caused many problems such as prevention of an accident in tunnel, the difficulty of maintainence, the disadvantage of passengers' moving line. Thus construction on ground plan is coming up again with relation to the interest among local people. There have been lots of national budget loss, construction period delay in this project and people hardly trust policies about national project and nor do engineers. It will be presented that the railway line which is accorded with the characteristics of region, an agreement with local communities about national project, the reasonable procedure to determine how to pass through cities, resolve the conflict among neighborhood, and the role of engineers.

  • In this study, the thermal conductive characteristics and basic properties of the nine commercial products of bentonite grouts were studied. Six of the nine products for ground heat exchanger systems are imported and others for civil engineering are domestic. The thermal conductivities of all bentonite products are nearly similar among products. The free swell indexes, viscosities and filter losses of the ground heat exchanger grouts are lower than those of the civil engineering ones. These characteristics seem to increase of the fluidity to fill the bentonite slurry to bore-hall perfectly, rather than to prevent underground water penetration. Thus, the mixtures of bentonites and sands are recommended for high thermal conduction grouts.

  • This paper proposes a theoretical analysis of hidden device detection and a design of multiband circular polarization patch array antenna for non-linear junction detector system application. A good axial ratio of circular polarization patch antenna is realized by a new approach that employs inclined slots, two rectangular grooves and a truncated ground for the conventional antenna. A good axial ratio of the 1.5 dB lower is measured by having an asymmetric gap distance between the ground planes of the coplanar waveguide feeding structure. The common ground plane of the linear array has an optimum trapezoidal slot array to reduce the mutual coupling without increasing the distance between the radiators. The higher gain of about 1 dBi is realized by using the novel common ground structure. The measured return loss, gain, and axial ratio of the proposed single radiator, as well as the proposed array antennas, showed a good agreement with the simulated results.

  • Numerical analysis has been performed to estimate maximum settlement and maximum horizontal displacement due to tunnel excavation varying ground condition, tunnel depth and diameter, and construction condition (volume loss at excavation face). The maximum surface settlement from the numerical analysis has been compared with the maximum settlement at tunnel crown considering ground condition, tunnel depth and diameter, and construction condition, and it has been also compared with the maximum horizontal displacement. The results from the numerical analysis have been compared with field measurements to confirm the applicability and validity of the results and by this comparison it is believed that the numerical results in this study can be utilized practically in analyzing the ground movements due to tunnel excavation.
