  • Recently, the use of renewable energy has been attracted due to the interest in energy-saving and the reduction of CO2 emission. In order to reduce the energy consumption of the cooling and the heating in the field of the architectural engineering, heat pump systems using renewable energy have been developed and used in various applications. In many researches, integrated heat pump systems are suggested which use solar and geothermal heat as the heat source for cooling and heating. However, it is still difficult to predict the performance of the systems, because the characteristic of heat exchange in each system is complicated and various. In this system, the performance prediction simulation of the heat pump was developed using a dynamic simulation model. This paper describes the summary of the suggested systems and the result of the simulation. The average temperature of the heat source, heating loads and COP were calculated with the cases of different local conditions, different system composition and different operation time by TRNSYS 17.

  • This paper provides an economic analysis of a new geothermal heat pump system that reuses condenser waste heat from a Ground Source Heat Pump ($GSHP_{ch}$) to provide energy for a hot water Ground Source heat pump ($GSHP_{hw}$). After conducting feasibility tests using GLD and TRNSYS simulations, the proposed system was effectively installed and thoroughly tested. We observe that 1) the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of the $GSHP_{hw}$ and the $GSHP_{ch}$ during cooling mode improves by up to 62% and 7%, respectively; 2) the number of bore holes can be reduced by two; and 3) the hot water supply temperature of the $GSHP_{hw}$ increases by up to $60^{\circ}C$. We further conclude that 1) the reduction of two bore holes can save approximately ten million Won from the initial cost investment; and 2) the increased COP of the $GSHP_{hw}$ can save approximately one million Won in annual electricity costs.

  • The performance of water-to-water heat pump system coupled with the ground source vertical heat exchanger is presented in this paper. The CAP program of Florida Heat Pump Co. is used to predict the heat pump performances while the EED program calculates the borehole fluid temperature. It is shown that COPH increases with decreasing the temperature of output water for the operation of heating mode and COPR increases with increasing temperature of output water for the operation of cooling mode. The value of specific heat extraction rate must be moderate to insure the reasonable installation cost of borehole system. With $1^{\circ}C$decrease of $T_{wo}$ the average COPH increase is estimated as about $0.06/^{\circ}C$(for $T_{wo}\;=\;45{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ range) while with $1^{\circ}C$ increase of $T_{wo}$ the estimation of COPR increase is about $0.13/^{\circ}C$(for $T_{wo}\;= \;5{\sim}11^{\circ}C$ range) at the specific heat extraction rate of 30W/m.

  • Due to reinforcement of international environment regulation and high oil prices, interest in renewable energy is growing. Countries participating in UNFCCC are continuously putting efforts in reducing greenhouse gas after enforcing Kyoto Protocol into effect on Feb, 2005. Energy used in buildings, which relies heavily on fossil fuel accounts for about 24% of total energy consumption. In this study, air, geothermal and water source heat pump systems for an 322 $m^2$ auditorium in an office building is simulated using TRNSYS version 17 for comparing energy consumptions. The results show that energy consumptions of air, geothermal and water source heat pumps are 14,485, 10,249, and 10,405 kWh, respectively. Annual equal payments which consider both initial and running costs become 5,734,521, 6,403,257 and 5,596,058 Won. Thus, water source heat pump is the best economical choice.

  • Recently use of renewable energies such as geothermal energy for space heating and cooling is increasing in Korea due to energy crisis and global warming. Ground source heat pump (GSHP) is known as one of the most environment-friendly HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) systems in the world. However, some potential effects caused installation and operation of the GSHP systems on soil and groundwater environment are reported. The potential effects are closely related with inappropriate installation, operation and closure of the GSHP systems. In this paper, possible effects of the GSHPs on soil and groundwater environments are reviewed.

  • Optimization of a rectangular profile annular fin with variable pipe inside radius is presented. This optimum procedure is based on fixed fin height and is made by using variables separation method. The optimum heat loss, corresponding optimum fin length and optimum fin efficiency are presented as a function of pipe inside radius, fin half height, inside fluid convection characteristic number and ambient convection characteristic number. One of results shows that the optimum fin length increases linearly with increase of pipe inside radius for fixed fin height and fin base radius.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of the refrigerant charge amount on the performance of a water-to-water ground source heat pump with a variation of compressor speed and the secondary fluid flow rate. The water-to-water ground source heat pump was tested by varying refrigerant charge amount from -40% to 20% of full charge. Compressor speed was changed from 30 Hz to 75 Hz, and the secondary fluid flow rate was adjusted from 6 LPM to 14 LPM. For all test conditions, EWT of an indoor heat exchanger and an outdoor heat exchanger were maintained at standard conditions of ISO 13256-2. The slope of the COP with the variation of charge amount is much steeper at undercharged conditions than that at overcharged conditions. For all compressor speed, the variation of the system performance according to charge amounts showed the similar trends. However, the optimum charge amount of the system increased a little with an increment of compressor speed. When the secondary fluid flow rate decreased, the system optimized at higher refrigerant charge amount conditions.

  • This paper presents the measurement and analysis results for the cooling performance of ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) system using a cooling tower as a supplemental heat rejector. In order to demonstrate the performance of the hybrid approach, we installed the monitoring equipments including sensors for measuring temperature and power consumption, and measured operation parameters from May 1 to October 30, 2014. The results showed that the entering source temperature of brine returning from the ground heat exchanger was in a range of design target temperature. Leaving load temperatures to building showed an average value of $11.4^{\circ}C$ for cooling season. From the analysis, the daily performance factor (PF) of geothermal heat pumps ranged from 4.4 to 5.2, while the daily PF of hybrid GCHP system varied from 3.0 to 4.0 over the entire cooling season.

  • We suggest improvement direction of energy-saving design based on analysis of current situation in school facilities. School facilities have large area among public buildings. While the number of students is decreasing, the number of school and energy consumption is increasing year after year. School facilities have excellent heat insulation property, but it requires further examination about excessive heat insulation plan. School facilities are using gas heat pump actively for cooling and heating, but has difference in use ratio of ground source heat pump by region. Thus School facilities requires active using of ground source heat pump and BIPV(Building Integrated Photovoltaic System).
