BACKGROUND: Cultivation of winter cover crops is strongly recommended to increase land utilization efficiency, animal feeding material self-production, and to improve soil and environmental quality. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four major winter crops (barley, Chinese milk vetch, hairy vetch, and rye) having different C/N ratio were seeded in silt loam paddy soil in the November 2007 and the aboveground biomass was harvested on the late May 2008 to evaluate its effectiveness as green manure, and root biomass distribution was characterized at the different depth (0-60 cm) to study its effect on physical properties and carbon sequestration in soil. During this experiment, the naturally growing weed in the rice paddy soil in Korea, short awn foxtail (Alopecurus aequalis Sobol), was considered as control treatment. Above-ground biomass of all cover crops selected was significantly higher than that of the control treatment (2.8 Mg/ha). Comparatively higher above-ground biomass productivity of rye and barley (15.8 and 13.5 Mg/ha, respectively) suggested that these cover crops possibly had the highest potential as a green manure and animal feeding material. Root biomass production of different cover crops followed the same trend as that for their above ground biomass. Rye (Secale cereal) might have the highest potential for soil C accumulation (7893 C kg/ha) by root biomass development, and then followed by barley (6985 C kg/ha), hairy vetch (6467 C kg/ha), Chinese milk vetch (6671 C kg/ha), and control (5791 C kg/ha). CONCLUSION(s): Cover crops like rye and barley having high biomass productivity might be the most effective winter cover crops to increase organic carbon distribution in different soil aggregates which might be beneficial to improve soil structure, aeration etc. and C sequestration.

There are various problems caused by environmental pollution around the abandoned mines. In addition, they are exposed to the risk of safety accidents due to sinkholes caused by ground subsidence. Therefore, the ground is stabilized through the filling and construction of abandoned mines using industrial by-products. However, in the case of Backfill Material, secondary pollution caused by acidic drainage and leachate is not suppressed. To solve this problem, the liner and cover material is first installed. Therefore, in this study, the watertightness of the liner and cover material was improved by mixing crystalline admixtures by content.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the usage of microtremor in estimation of subsurface structure and ground response to ground motion. Ground motion amplification based on site condition of an area is an important parameter for dynamic design. Microtremor cover the characteristics in a low frequency range, while forced vibrations cover them in a high-frequency range. Microtremor consider ground characteristics and offer transfer function in area. To determine the dominant frequency, the passive microtremor measurement is performed and to determine the transfer function of test site, active microtremor measurement is performed. Microtremor measurement in the site is compared with theoretical transfer function calculated from the known structures.

A multi-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system is developed to solve the manhole cover detection problem for the infrastructure maintenance in the suburbs of big city. The visible light sensor is employed to collect the ground image data and a series of image processing and machine learning methods are used to detect the manhole cover. First, the image enhancement technique is employed to improve the imaging effect of visible light camera. An imaging environment perception method is used to increase the computation robustness: the blind Image Quality Evaluation Metrics (IQEMs) are used to percept the imaging environment and select the images which have a high imaging definition for the following computation. Because of its excellent processing effect the adaptive Multiple Scale Retinex (MSR) is used to enhance the imaging quality. Second, the Single Shot multi-box Detector (SSD) method is utilized to identify the manhole cover for its stable processing effect. Third, the spatial coordinate of manhole cover is also estimated from the ground image. The practical applications have verified the outdoor environment adaptability of proposed algorithm and the target detection correctness of proposed system. The detection accuracy can reach 99% and the positioning accuracy is about 0.7 meters.

The Vegetation cover is a significant factor to comprehend characteristics of the ground surface for meterological and hydrological models, which measure energy in the atmosphere or predict the runoff of ground surface. Deardorff introduced vegetation cover fraction to quantitatively comprehend the vegetation cover in 1978. After Deardorff, most of previous researches were conducted on low-resolution or high-resolution images, but only few researches on Landsat that are in medium-resolution images. Therefore, this study aims to investigate a way of calculating the vegetation cover fraction by using NDVI of Landsat images, which were hardly handled previously. For accurate vegetation cover fraction, we compared the evaluated parameters from this study with past vegetation cover fraction parameters that have been calculated for using NDVI of Landsat OLI images. The result of research was shown that NDVI is quite correlated with the vegetation fraction cover in the previous researches. In fact, RMSE of vegetation cover fraction values that obtained through the suggested parameters on this study showed the highest accuracy of 7.3% among all the cases.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of ground cover treatments on the nutrient contribution in a 'Niitaka' pear ($Pyrus$$pyriforia$) orchard. Treatments included; 1) sod culture, 2) winter cover crop [ryegrass+hairy vetch], and 3) winter [ryegrass+hairy vetch]+summer [greensolgo (sudan grass ($Sorghum$$bicolor$ L.))+ nemajanghwang (crotalaria ($Crotalaria$$juncea$ L.)] cover crops. Ryegrass and hairyvetch were seeded with 6.4 kg/10a and 3.0 kg/10a, respectively, on October 17 of 2008, and greensolgo and nemajanghwang were seeded with 2.0 kg/10a and 3.0 kg/10a, respectively, on June 4 of 2009 at a diligent farmer in Boseong in Chonnam. Winter+summer cover crops provided greater amounts of dry weight, followed by winter cover crop and sod culture. The difference of amounts of dry weight from the ground covers affected to the levels of total N, P, and K contents, which were greater nutrient levels than those of recommended nutrient requirement for satisfying 10- to 12-year-old pear tree growth. Greater amounts of dry weight from the ground covers increased organic matter and concentrations of K and Mg in soil. Foliar nutrient concentrations, as an indicator of nutrient status of a tree, were not affected by application of ground cover treatments.

This study was conducted to nominate optimal ground cover plants eventually enhancing Aronia production in the highland rolling plains. Total number of 17 weed species were observed in Aronia field when no cover plant was applied. Meanwhile, 12, 14, 15 and 16 weed species were observed when kentucky bluegrass, white clover, rattail fescue and ground ivy were used, respectively. Untreated native weed species were 73.6 cm tall before cut, and kentucky bluegrass, white clover, Rattail fescue and ground ivy were 57.5, 36.8, 48.3 and 40.9 cm, respectively. Based on plant height before cut, two shortest plants, white clover and ground ivy, were considered effective as ground cover plants in Aronia field. Coverage at $3^{rd}$ year by cover plants ranged from 85% to 100%. Coverage of uncovered Aronia field by native weed species was 95% while coverage by 4 treatments, kentucky bluegrass, white clover, rattail fescue and ground ivy were 100, 87, 85 and 100%, respectively. Aronia yield per plant at $3^{rd}$ year was 1,916 g with white clover cover followed by 1,770 g with Rattail fescue, 1,766 g with ground ivy, 1,098 g without cover plants and 931 g with Kentucky Bluegrass. Out results indicated that ground ivy was the best among all treatments based on 3 criteria, (1) short plant architecture, (2) rapid ground covering and (3) better weed control. In addition, ground ivy cover appeared to secure better yield.
A Land cover map over East Asian region (Kongju national university Land Cover map: KLC) is classified by using support vector machine (SVM) and evaluated with ground truth data. The basic input data are the recent three years (2006-2008) of MODIS (MODerate Imaging Spectriradiometer) NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) data. The spatial resolution and temporal frequency of MODIS NDVI are 1km and 16 days, respectively. To minimize the number of cloud contaminated pixels in the MODIS NDVI data, the maximum value composite is applied to the 16 days data. And correction of cloud contaminated pixels based on the spatiotemporal continuity assumption are applied to the monthly NDVI data. To reduce the dataset and improve the classification quality, 9 phenological data, such as, NDVI maximum, amplitude, average, and others, derived from the corrected monthly NDVI data. The 3 types of land cover maps (International Geosphere Biosphere Programme: IGBP, University of Maryland: UMd, and MODIS) were used to build up a "quasi" ground truth data set, which were composed of pixels where the three land cover maps classified as the same land cover type. The classification results show that the fractions of broadleaf trees and grasslands are greater, but those of the croplands and needleleaf trees are smaller compared to those of the IGBP or UMd. The validation results using in-situ observation database show that the percentages of pixels in agreement with the observations are 80%, 77%, 63%, 57% in MODIS, KLC, IGBP, UMd land cover data, respectively. The significant differences in land cover types among the MODIS, IGBP, UMd and KLC are mainly occurred at the southern China and Manchuria, where most of pixels are contaminated by cloud and snow during summer and winter, respectively. It shows that the quality of raw data is one of the most important factors in land cover classification.

Alluvial soil is one of the most difficult grounds for tunneling works due to the insufficient ground strength and excessive ground water inflow. Dduk island in Seoul has a wide alluvium developed by two rivers, Han and Jung-Ryang. Subway tunnel of $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ line planed across Dduk island has highly poor ground conditions due to small cover and deeply developed alluvium. Moreover, much part of this tunnel is located parallel to the bridge foundations of another railway with a small horizontal distance. Original design was done in 2002 and construction has been in progress. During the construction, tunnel design has been partly changed and adjusted for the complex ground condition and the demand from related organizations. This paper intend to introduce the urban tunnel design and construction in alluvial soils. This line could be divided three sections(A, B, C) according to ground and adjacent conditions. Section A is featured by mixed tunnel faces consisted with alluvial soils and weathered or weak rocks. The feature of section B is that tunnel underpasses near the bridge foundations of another subway. Lastly, section C with a very short length is the most difficult construction conditions due to the small cover, poor ground, obstacles on and underneath ground surface.
