  • Automobile aeroacoustics Is a developing area of technology where experimental and theoretical tools are being continuously refined to understand, analyze and modify the noise-generating mechanisms in the vehicle flow. Main sources of ground vehicle exterior noise are the tires (tire/road interaction) and the unsteady flow field around the vehicle. In this study, the sound source localization of a rolling tire was applied to the measurement of radiated sound by using an acoustic mirror system. A possible flow pattern that develops is suggested based on detailed wind tunnel investigations with a rotating wheel in contact with a moving belt.

  • The unsteady turbulent flow characteristics of NACA4406 airfoil at close proximity to the pound are numerically investigated, especially focused on the noise generation mechanism near the blunt trailing edge. The unsteady two-dimensional compressible Wavier-Stokes equations with a Spalart-Allmaras turbulence closure model are solved by the 6th-order compact scheme and the 4th-order Runge-Kutta scheme. The computation shows a noise generation by a feedback mechanism at the blunt tailing edge, where the acoustic-fluidic coupling occurs between the wall-reflected sound waves and the periodically disturbed turbulent shear layer.

  • The dispersion of plume which is emitted from a chimney is governed by a lot of factors: wind, local terrain, turbulence intensity of atmosphere, and temperature, etc. In this study, we numerically investigate the plume dispersions for various altitudinal temperature gradients and wind speeds. The normal atmosphere has the temperature decrease of $0.6^{\circ}C/100m$, however, actually the real atmosphere has the various altitudinal temperature profiles according to the meteorological factors. A previous study focused on this atmospheric temperature gradient which induces a large scale vertical flow motion in the atmosphere thus makes a peculiar plume dispersion characteristics. In this paper, the effects of the atmospheric temperature gradient as well as the wind speed are investigated concurrently. The results for the developing processes in the atmosphere and the affluent's concentrations at the ambient and ground level are compared under the various altitudinal temperature gradients and wind speeds.

  • Microthermal fluctuations are introduced by atmospheric turbulence very near the ground. In order to detect microthermal fluctuations at Fuxian Solar Observatory (FSO), a microthermal instrument has been developed. The microthermal instrument consists of a microthermal sensor, which is based on a Wheatstone bridge circuit and uses fine tungsten filaments as resistance temperature detectors, an associated signal processing unit, and a data collection, & communication subsystem. In this paper, after a brief introduction to surface layer seeing, we discuss the instrumentation behind the microthermal detector we have developed and then present the results obtained. The results of the evaluation indicate that the effect of the turbulent surface boundary layer to astronomical seeing would become sufficiently small when installing a telescope at a height of 16m or higher from the ground at FSO.

  • Turbulent flows around two-dimensional vehicle-like bodies in ground proximity are numerically simulated. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a k-.epsilon. turbulence model are numercally solved, and a body-fitted coordinate system is used. It is shown that the simulation is acceptable in comparison with limitted data measured in the wind-tunnel. According to numerical simulations, drag coefficients are under-estimated and lift coefficients are over-estimated during the model test in the wind-tunnel if the ground is fixed. Such ground effects are reduced as Reynolds number is increased. Reducing the gap between the vehicle and the ground make drag coefficients smaller and lift coefficients larger. The changes in static pressure distributions on the bottom and the rear surface play dominent roles in determination of the drag and the lift of the body in ground proximity. Drag component less than 10% of the total amount is contributed by skin-frictions. When the slant-angle of the body is reduced, the drag shows its minimum value and the lift shows its maximum value at about 22 degree.

  • Satellite optical communication has gained significant attention owing to its many quality features (e.g., a larger bandwidth, license free spectrum, higher data rate, and better security) compared to satellite microwave communication. Various experiments have been performed during many space missions to demonstrate and characterize inter-satellite links, downlinks, and uplinks. Korea has also planned to establish an experimental communication system using a geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellite and the Geochang station as an optical ground station for low Earth orbit (LEO)-to-ground optical relay links. In this study, the performance of inter-satellite communication links and downlinks was investigated for the new Korean experimental communication system in terms of link margin, bit error rate (BER), and channel capacity. In particular, the performance of the inter-satellite links was analyzed based on the receiving apertures and the transmitting power, while that of the downlink was analyzed in terms of atmospheric turbulence conditions and transmitting power. Finally, we discussed two system parameters of receiving aperture and transmitting power to meet the three criteria of link margin, BER, and channel capacity.

  • A numerical analysis of turbulent gas-particle two-phase flow is performed in conjunction with the experiments of Fackrell & Robins and Raupach & Legg that considered ground-level source and/or elevated source flat plate flow. K-$\omega$ turbulence model is used in order to analyze fully turbulent flow field and the concentration equation with settling velocity is adopted for the concentration field. The model of Einstein and Chien is applied that couples the velocity field and the concentration field. Turbulent eddy viscosity is re-evaluated in this model. The present numerical results have good agreement between the simulation and the experimental data for the mean flow velocities and particle concentrations. While the previous study shows about 27% error in the vicinity of the source of particle concentration, the .present study allows about 14% error. A new turbulent gas-particle flow model developed by this study is able to cut down error by 13% at a near source.

  • Characteristics of wind resources of offshore and coastal regions were compared using wind data obtained from HeMOSU-1 (Herald of Meteorological and Oceanographic Special Unit-1) meteorological mast located at Southwestern Sea, and ground-based LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) at Gochang observation site near it. The analysis includes comparison of basic wind statistics such as mean wind speed, wind direction, power law exponent and their temporal variability as well as site assessment items for the wind power plant such as turbulence intensity and wind power density at the two observation sites. It was found that the wind at HeMOSU-1 site has lower diurnal and seasonal variability than that at Gochang site, which lead to smaller turbulence intensity. Overall, the results of the comparative analysis show that the wind resource at HeMOSU-1 site located offshore has more favorable condition for wind power generation than the wind resource at Gochang which shows nature of coastal area.
