  • Because of their low operating and maintaining costs, ground-source heat pump(GSHP) systems are an increasingly popular choice for providing heating, cooling and water heating to public and commercial buildings. Despite these advantages and the growing awareness, GSHP systems to residential sectors have not been adopted in Korea until recently. A feasibility study of a residential GSHP system was therefore conducted using the traditional life cycle cost(LCC) analysis within the current electricity price framework and potential scenarios of that framework. As a result, when the current residential electricity costs for running the GSHP system are applied, the GSHP system has weak competitiveness to conventional HV AC systems considered. However, when the operating costs are calculated in the modified price frameworks of electricity, the residential GSHP system has the lower LCC than the existing cooling and heating equipments. The calculation results also show that the residential GSHP system has lower annual prime energy consumption and total pollutant emissions than the alternative HVAC systems considered in this work.

  • A ground source heat pump (GSHP) system can stable system operation by using underground heat source and has high reliability for energy production. However, wide-spread of the GSHP system is delayed to high initial investment costs. In previous studies, horizontal and unit-type ground heat exchanger (GHX) have developed to overcome disadvantages such as high initial cost. However, these performances of GHXs are greatly influenced by climate and weather conditions. It is necessary to analyze the performance of GHX according to the ground temperature change in the installation site. In this study, the ground temperature of each installation site confirmed and performance of unit-type GHX quantitatively analyzed by numerical analysis. As the result, the performance of the unit type GHX was 33.9 W/m in Seoul, 34.2 W/m in Daejeon, and 37.2 W/m in Busan. The result showed the difference performance of GHX according to local climate was maximum of 9.7%.

  • Geothermal heat pump(GHP) systems have been shown to be an environmentally-friendly, efficient alternative to traditional cooling and heating systems in both residential and commercial applications. Although some experimental work related to performance evaluation of GHP systems with vertical borehole ground heat exchangers for commercial buildings has been done, relatively little has been reported on the performance simulation of these systems. The aim of this study is to evaluate the cooling and heating performance of the GHP system with 30 borehole ground heat exchangers applied to an commercial building($1,210m^2$) in Seoul. For this purpose, a typical design procedure was involved with a combination of design parameters such as building loads, heat pump capacity, circulating pump, borehole diameter, and ground effective thermal properties, etc. The cooling and heating performance prediction of the system was conducted with different prediction methods and then each result is compared.

  • Greenhouses should be heated during nights and cold days in order to fit growth conditions in greenhouses. Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems are recognized to be outstanding heating and cooling systems. A horizontal GSHP system with thermal storage tank was installed in greenhouse and investigated the performance characteristics. The reasons for using thermal storage tank were discussed in detail. Thermal storage tank can provide heat for heating load that is larger than GSHP system heating capacity. The results of study showed that the heating coefficient of performance of the heat pump system was 2.69.

  • The final energy consumption in the building sector in Korea represents almost 20% of the total energy consumption. Besides, Space heating and hot water generation in Korea are based on fossil fuels, with a serious environmental impact. This study describes thermal performance of heating demonstration system using close-loop ground source heat pump installed at Korean minjok leadership academy. The results of the experimental study, it retrieve the investment cost for 3years 8months and reduction amount of $CO_2$are 293,900 $kgCO_2$.

  • This study aims to investigate and analyze the present state of ground source heat pump(GSHP) system applied in Korea. It is based on the statistic from the New and Renewable Energy Center in Korea and construction results of the professional companies registered to the center. The research items were installed area, installed year, building use, ground heat exchange type and heat exchanger type of the pump. According to the result of investigation, the using GSHP system have been increasing steadily as the space heating and cooling system in a building. The capacity of this system is also becoming lager based on technical and economical feasibility analysis about the system since GSHP system first introduced in 2000.

  • Recently, as the demand for sustainable energy sources is increasing, ground-source heat pump (GSHP) systems are receiving growing attention. However, the initial cost of GSHP system is higher than it of the conventional systems, especially, in small-size buildings. Therefore, for the application to the small-size building, it is necessary to develop small-size ground heat exchanger with small-size buildings. In this study, analysis of unit-type heat exchanger due to grouting materials. As a result, 1492.14 W of heat exchange rate was acquired in the condition of cement-silica sand-graphite materials.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the daily heating performance of ground source multi-heat pump system with vertical single U-tube type GLHXs, which were installed in a school building located in Cheonan. Daily average COP of heat pump unit on Jan. 12th, 2009 at heating mode was lower than it on Nov. 10th, 2008 and Dec. 15th, 2008, because of lower EWT of the outdoor heat exchanger and relatively smaller size of condenser and evaporator. But, the system COP on the former was higher than it on the latter because ground loop circulating pump was operated in rated speed. It is suggested that the new algorithms to control the flow rate of secondary fluid for GLHX according to load change have to be developed in order to enhance the performance of the system COP.

  • The present study has been conducted economic analysis of heat storage type ground source heat pump system(HSGSHP) and normal ground source heat pump (GSHP) and central boiler system with individual air conditioning facility which are installed at the same building in the shared an apartment house. Cost items, such as initial construction cost, annual energy cost and maintenance cost of each system are considered to analyze life cycle cost (LCC) and simple payback period (SPP) with initial cost different are compared. The initial cost is a rule to the Government basic unit cost of production. LCC applied present value method is used to assess economical profit of both of them. Variables used to LCC analysis are prices escalation rate and interest rate mean values of during latest 10 years. The LCC result shows that HSGSHP (1,351,000,000won) is more profitable than central boiler system with individual air conditioning facility by 86.7% initial cost. And SPP appeared 8.0 year overcome the different initial cost by different annual energy cost.
