  • To obtain a low ground resistance in high resistivity soil or in insufficient place such as downtown, long vertical ground rods are often used. However, if the lightning current or fault current with high frequency flows into the grounding system, the ground impedance is significantly increased. This paper presents how the impulse current works on the long vertical ground rods with a different length. As a result, it can be estimated what the waveform is composed of and how the GPR is affected by the rate of current change.

  • To receive size of same ground resistance by form of construction work of ground electrode, there is difference of amount or price of used resources, and should construct ground electrode little more effectively because appear to differ in life period according to nature of ground electrode resources, but should consider economical efficient.

  • A series do wind tunnel tests were conducted for Korean high-speed train model with various shape components to assess the contributions to aerodynamic drag. In order to elucidate the ground effects, two different wind tunnels, one with a moving ground system and the other with a fixed ground, were used for the same model and the results of both were compared and analyzed in detail. The result show that a suitable ground simulation is necessary for the test of a train model with many cars and detailed underbody. But the relative difference of the drag coefficients for the modifications of shape components can be measured by a fixed ground test with high accuracy and low cost. The effects of the nose shape, the inter-cargap and the bogie-fairing on total drag were discussed and some ideas were prosed to decrease the aerodynamic resistance of high speed train.

  • Grounding impedance depends on the frequency of current flowing into a grounding system. Especially, the lightning gives a broad frequency spectrum from low frequency up to 1 MHz. So the grounding impedance related to high frequency current like lightning should be measured with high frequency source. In this paper, we described the grounding impedances of deeply-driven ground rods of 10 $\sim$ 48 m long with respect to the frequency of injected currents. For the experiments, we used the wideband power amplifier which can produce sinusoidal voltages with the frequency ranges of DC $\sim$ 250 MHz. As a result, the longer the ground rod is, the lower the ground resistance is. However the grounding impedance of deeply-driven ground rod in the range of higher frequency is significantly increased. As a consequence, it is important to evaluate the high frequency performance of grounding systems for lightning protection.

  • This paper presents the behaviors of transient and conventional grounding impedances of a deep-driven ground rods associated with the injection point of lightning impulse currents. The transient impedance of deep-driven ground rods under lightning impulse currents were higher than the static ground resistance. The transient grounding impedances strongly depend on the injection point and size of grounding electrodes and the rising time of impulse current. Reduction of ground system inductance is an important factor to lightning surge protection.

  • Electric vehicle use independent electricity of high voltage. if isolation of electricity is destructed, devices and people are considerably damaged. Therefore, detection of ground fault is necessary for electric vehicle. As the existing detection method of ground fault can not detect ground fault when isolation of both positive side and negative side of electricity is destructed, and change of voltage of electricity. This paper proposed detection method for ground fault of both two sides of electricity and change of voltage. The proposed method is verified by analysis of equivalent circuit.

  • A ground electrode subjected to lightning surge current shows the transient impedance behaviors. The ground electrode for protection against lightning should be evaluated in view of the transient grounding impedance and conventional grounding impedance, not ground resistance. The transient impedance characteristics of ground electrodes are influenced by the shape of ground electrode and the soil characteristics, as well as the waveform of lightning surge current. In order to propose a simulation method of analyzing the transient impedance characteristics of the grounding system in practical use, this paper suggests a theoretical analysis method of distributed parameter circuit model to simulate the transient impedance characteristics of counterpoise subjected to lightning surge current. EMTP and Matlab programs were employed to compute the transient grounding impedances of three counterpoises with different lengths. As a consequence, the simulated results using the proposed distributed parameter circuit model are in good agreement with the measured results.

  • Although DC ground resistance is a good index of performance for a grounding system, it does not reflect the grounding performance during the transient states. Besides, impulse ground impedance, which is defined by a ratio of the peak value of transient ground potential rise to the peak value of impulse current, cannot be an absolute performance index due to its dependence on impulse current shape. In this paper, a grounding performance of needle-typed ground rod has been compared with simple ground rod.

  • Since DC ground resistance, which is a good index of the performance of a grounding system in low frequency. does not show the performance in transient state. We measured ground impedances in frequency domain ranging from 0.1 Hz to 900 KHz maximum to quantify the transient grounding performance of 4 types of grounding system. Transfer function was derived from the measured frequency-dependant ground impedance of a grounding grid. A simulation has been performed to verify the transfer function using EMTP (Electro-Magnetic Transient Program).
